Q6600 owners... what is your VID?

If you own a Q6600, please reply with your VID and the stepping of your chip. The VID can be found using coretemp. If you're using vista, coretemp will not display the stepping in some cases, so you can use CPU-Z (it's listed under "revision") to get the stepping.

If all else fails, look on the box your q6600 came in; the last 5 letters after the Q6600 in the production code will tell you the stepping. "SLACR" means it's a G0 while "SL9UM" means it's an older B3. Here an example shot taken by XtremeTiramisu to give you an idea:

1.3 VID Crappy? I'm running 4 cores at 3.6 GHz 24/7 (with nice temps) and can boot into windows vista @ 4GHz. True, it's not Orthos stable at 4GHz but I can run some Pi....all on air.

It doesn't work like that. The transistors are the same, so the current (amps) is the same (at the same speed), but the voltage is lower. That means LOWER watts, not the same amount.

What about leakage? the transistors are not the same, due to variations in the process.

Unless, of course, they adjust voltage as you say, however, for example, I have had many E6600's, and the final power consumption of each cpu was quite different.

Lower VID = higher current
I can run 3900Mhz 1.44V, but is hotter than other chip 4ghz 1.62V, and need minimum water with good block for temps under 65C

Summer time now, so with the AC on, room temperature is about 70F

3.7ghz 1.5V (1.47 Windows) it idles anywhere from 30 to 40c

When I run Prim95, it jumps all the way to 60c - 65c

Thermalright Ultra 120 with a 1500 RPM BLUE LED fan!

Okay guys, just updated the first post of the thread to reflect the new replies... have a look!

I don't quite know what to make of this whole lower VID = higher o/c potential thing. My chip for example, is a B3 stepping Q6600 w/ a reported VID of 1.2875V (coretemp), yet I can run 9x266 (stock) which is stable to 2x orthos for over 8 hours (I stopped it after 8 hours) @ 1.1375V in the BIOS which is 1.040V in CPU-Z under load. I can also run 9x327 @ 1.2275V in the BIOS or 1.208V in CPU-Z under load or a full 9x333 @ 1.2625V in the BIOS or 1.232 V in CPU-Z.

My point is that all these vcore values are under the VID reported in coretemp. In my case, the VID reported in coretemp doesn't seem to mean anything given that I can run my system up to a 25 % o/c well under this voltage.

Questions:

-What does the coretemp VID mean if anything?
-When comparing two identical stepping chips, does the one with the lower VID equate to anything meaningful?

I've tried to pay special attention to peoples VID when they post their OC's, I'm beginning to think VID value means nothing to an OC.

Q6600 "G0" L723A825 VID = 1.250:) Current OC of 3.71GHz (412 x 9) with only 1.43 Set in BIOS on the P5K-DLX. Under full load, Voltage is still 1.41V.

1. A lower voltage at the same OC as a CPU with a higher vid....but only to a certain OC level?

2. Generally higher temps at a lower voltage.

3. Having a low vid doesn't mean it will OC higher than a high vid.

Would be a big help in determining if there really is any correlation concerning OC headroom/temps, or if it only pertains to stock 266FSBx(multi) for whatever stock clock.

Is that stable to 6+ hours of 2x orthos or prime 95 v25? What is your cooling and load temps @ 9x400? and @ 9x445?

I know this has only been running a few minutes, but temps are about the same as at 3.6. Just kicked it up a notch, lets see how it will do. Cooling with an ultra 120 extreme and panaflo fan. It's cooler here today, ambient about 70f.

what temps should a q6600 overclocker start to get worried about under full load ?

what im saying is when im overclocking my chip and doing a prime what should i make sure the temps stay under ?

i would like to try run my chip at 3.2 ghz 24/7 but dont know what these chips temps are capable of as my old rig was amd and over 62c was getting up there

Depends, B3's 62 °C and G0's 71 °C (Intel specs for the middle of the IHS temp which unfortunately doesn't exist; C2Qs only have coretemp DTS). Some say you can add 15 °C to those Intel numbers but I'm just not sure about that. I have a B3 and like to keep the temps under 63 °C or so but that's just my personal redline.

Okay all, this will be the final update; please don't post new VID data.

I'm not totally sure the integrity of the data collected is that high. What I mean by that is I have read several reports of different reported VIDs for the same chip on different boards. I have also read about the VID changing based on the speedstep state and other factors.

I started this thread hoping to see some sort of correlation between VID magnitude and vcore @ a given o/c level. I have received mixed reports on this front as well. I think the bottom line is there isn't a correlation between VID and overclockibility.

Since you guys took the time to reply to the post, the least I can do is update the data for the last time:
