100% celeron oc on the smallest/crappiest boxed cooler ever, all stock

Just look at this, is it a joke? :D New Conroe-L celeron boxed cooler is like at least 2 times smaller than a boxed Conroe cooler. It doesn't have a copper center either

Anyway, I bought a celeron 420 for my 2nd rig and they clock pretty well, even on stock cooler and stock voltage. The only problem is that they have a very low FSB wall. This was the maximum at any voltage, stock or 1.6V doesnt mattter

just like my E2140, FSB walled around 410 with stock or any voltages also.

410 is not so bad considering a bit more expensive celeron 430 and 440 models have 9x and 10x multi

3.2-3.6 stable on air and some voltage bump should be possible without problems

Later I did 266fsb BSEL mod, it is the same as for 4300 but it only helped on Asrock Conroe1333 MB since it has a very limited oc options - only FSB/PCI-E frequency change and a slight bump to chipset/ddr2 voltage. That's it. And FSB is tied to pci-e frequency, so BSEL mod is needed to start pcie=100 at 266fsb

yeah i guess 49 is a bit expensive, but keep in mind theyve only just started to appear, alternate is the only shop ive seen em at, so once availability gets better, i think i should be able to get one for 40-45 euros

It is not the cpu but the mobo that makes me happy.
Single-core processors are doomed, but this mobo can make wonders for a decent matx computer with a dual core inside. Or maybe a quaddie?!?

Impressive OC, and even more impressive CPU and motherboard... Never in my wildest dreams would I ever thought I'd see a 945-based motherboard with such an amazing OC potential... Also, That Celly is utterly absurd... 100% OC with stock voltages AND that almost passive heatsink? Astonishing! Do you think all of them will be like that one, or you were just lucky?

Btw, apart from being E21xx cut in half, what else do these new Cellys lack? Is Dual Channel memory supported? and how about EIST and C1E?

Just MAYBE? :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl: Hell, even if you go with the 1.6GHz one, it will be doubling the CPU speed, and God knows how much more FSB we're talking about... Not to mention the added speed coming from extra RAM and GPU (even if it is an IGP, you usually don't run high-end AGP GPUs on 800MHz CPUs... lol). That is going to be one heck of a jump... (Like when I swtitched from a 12MHz 80286 to a 180MHz Pentium Pro... hehehe Well, maybe not that big, but you get the picture... :ROTF:)

Thanks for the info, kiwi. It would be nice to also have EIST on the Cellys, but I guess with such a low TDP already they can ditch it with no harm comming from it.

Also, it seems DC memory mode is supported for the first time (on Celerons, that is...). FSB bump, same cache (Cedar Mill Cellys had already doubled the cache from the Prescott ones), TDP lowered, C1E, DC, Core arquitecture...

Not a bad upgrade for the Celeron line at all... Seems to me only the "top dogs" on the 6xx line (probably only 64x and up) can face these new Cellys, right? Now I understand why Intel got rid of (oficial) Netburst support starting on the x3x (Bearlake) line of chipsets...

Hmmm, that's weird... I now Dual Channel depends on chipset implementation. However, I remember reading a while back (not very sure when, I think it was more than a year ago) Celeron CPUs couldn't use Dual Channel memory mode even if the chipset allowed it.

Also, when I had my P4P800-VM (865G-based socket 478 Asus mobo) and my 2.6GHz Celly (pre-Prescott Celeron :rolleyes:), I remember I never got to use DC... At least I don't think I did... It was a while back... hehe

Btw, about DC chipset support. Right now I think only SiS and VIA IGP chipsets don't have that feature. Which is rather yucky, since boards based on those chipsets are usually dirt cheap and can be rather feature-filled... I think I can't remember the last VIA-based (SiS was always a pain for me...) motherboard I saw without RAID support (which is not that common in Intel-based mobos...).

I'm about to buy a 420, can get one for 57 USD - damn cheap.
However, which mobo would you guys buy? do you believe ABIT Fatal1ty F-I90HD could reach any good speeds (can buy it demo, built in gfx, cheap). If not, can you write down some budget mobos which will OC well?
Do you think some random Kingston 667 memories would survive some overclocking? got the stock cooler from my E6600 to equip as well.

Right now, the best mATX OC-able mobos are the G33M-DS2R from Gigabyte, the F-I90HD from Abit and some variants of the "1333" series 945GC-based ASRock. If you prefer ATX boards, then the value segment starts off with the "4Core" series from ASRock.

Of course, you'll need external graphics in any of these boards. The ATX one because, well, it doesn't have an IGP. The mATX ones because the IGP severely limits the OC potential of ANY motherboard.

I would prefer an ATX board over mATX - just wondered about that one since it were so damn cheap.

Any other recommendations? There are a lot of DEMO mobos to buy as well (repaired, used, rma'ed).
ASrock is a good choice for value overclocking? it has the VIA PT880 chipset which I thought weren't good at all. I can however buy the ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA for 76 USD which indeed is very cheap.

I think all Intel CPUs since the appearing of the Core 2 Duo mobile line are 64bit capable. Only a few Cellys (from the Celeron D line), the Pentium M and the Core Duos are NOT 64 bit capable.

Also, this CPU is a direct descendant of the E21x0 line, which is also 64 bit enabled. The only difference on these Cellys (apart from the single core thing, of course) from the "bigger brothers" is the lack of EIST, every other tech available on the E21x0 is also present on the C4xx line.

yeah sounds like a bios problem..

Just got few of this Celeron 420 yesterday..
Altough they have same batch, they have different wall, 405MHz, 410MHz, also got one that could not run higher than 385MHz :mad:
This one could run till 430MHz, test it with Pi 32MB with tweaking and with Intel stock cooling (not like the one Kiwi's post :D )
