New G.skill PC6400 HZ 2x1 GB OC Report

In advance I would like to apologize for my bad English ;)

Today's subject of review is a set of G.skill memory, sold in new style heatspreaders (tomorrow I am going to include some photos :p: ). Memory is based on Micron D9 GMH IC's.

I had many of G.skill HZ series kits in my hands, starting from old ones without EPP support, ending on HZ PC8500 (GKX). HZ series always blinds, as they are the most prestige line of G.skill memory and they overclock like hell :cool:

Testing rig:

- E6600 B2, crappy one :down:
- Asus P5B Deluxe (1101 bios) - NO MOD & MSI P35 Neo-F (1,21b beta bios) - NO MOD
- Tagan EasyCon XL 700W
- MSI Geforce 8600GT

It is absolute max on bios 2,45v :( (besides CL5, as 600+ MHz my mobo is limiting). But results are very good for a such cheap ram modules :up: Don't bother with subtimings, as they are very loose to reach more MHz :D

And now it's MSI turn. Tuning up alphas to reach the highest possible Superpi32M stable MHz's :) The bad point of this motherboard is memory "wall" on 580 MHz stable... But clocking CL3 is quiet pleasant activity. So turning on some more voltage - 2,9v in bios (real about 2,82, but I shall meassure it with multimeter tomorrow morning). On "normal" motherboards lower voltage (as it overclocks memory very inelegantly) would be used, but it is the only mobo I dispose with higher voltage then 2,5v :shakes:

They are great ram. I got a set to help me diagnose issues with OCZ I was having, turned out to be timings/motherboard.

Anyone want to buy a set PM me. I want to get a second OCZ set for 4x1G matching.

I'm really tempted to upgrading right now due to

1) Amazing DDR2 prices! Especially this 2GBHZ kit for only 110€.

2) G0 C2D stepping CPUs appearing on the market. E6750 2.67GHz is listed as only ~180€ in Germany (E6600 is still 188€). xD

I wonder what does those sticks handle with a more 24/7 friendly vdimm such as 2.25~2.3v as that's the highest I'd probably personally go. At least I know a person running his at CL4 @ 511MHz at 2.3v which is quite OK IMO.

I just bought some of this a few days ago and have been playing around with it. Right now my system at a glance is:

Pentium D940 overclocked to 4Ghz
Intel D975XBX2 "Bad Axe 2" mobo
2Gb G.Skill DDR2 overclocked to 1Ghz running 4-4-4-12

How much vdimm for 32M 485mhz cas3? Alplha timings from bios or memset? Seems like a nice pair youve got!

All timings from bios. For 32M 485 MHz in bios ~ 3.1v, with Digital voltage multimeter it's about 3.02v. This mobo terribly overclock memory! I would like to have P5K if it had minimum 2,8v for mems :D I have to say that G.skill PCB is really powerfull, it struggles with 3,3v and is OK :)

Pretty sure if you scroll up thats been asked and answered allready 2.45v I believe.

got mine in; first glance the latencies are better than 9136's and at lower volts...but i'd already learned that.

Actually to be truthful I like this Ram better than the Crucuial Ballistix Tracer!

they perform great, i have 4*1gb of this ram!
here some screen (i didn't really overclock, no time at the moment)

GSkills, Crucial Ballistix...they are both good, as well as many others...the common thread? They're all using well-binned Micron D9s, of course!

I'm guessing somewhat of a compatibility issue with my Ballistix Tracer why I don't know because others are running them with success either that or I am more anal and intuned with whats what, but I'm leaning towards option A.
Actually they are sending me another board as some weird stuff has transpired with it after about a month of overclocking bliss and it running like a champ! I will be getting the cross shipped board today actually so I'll see whats what but I still think its a small compatibility issue!

But hey man for $104.00 for these G-Skills HZ they totally smoke and actually I am quite impressed with the responsiveness of them this being my first ever set of G-Skill.

I can't quite get to DDR2-1200 with these. But I'm on a DFI Infinity UltraII-M2. I'm not sure if that's my problem. Tbh this is my first pair of DDR2 so I'm not real experience in OCing them.

I hit about 1050 w/ 2.2v on mine. I think I'll try more volts soon to see if that does the trick.

My 71701200 kit won't do 32mb Pi @DDR2-800 cas 3 2.3v. It also wouldn't do DDR2-850 2.44v. I didn't bother to see what voltage it would take to make cas 3 DDR2-800 stable since I'm happy with its cas 4 performance anyway.

I agree with you :) Did I mention that rockstable? If it was, I would insert some screens with ORTHOS Ram test (about 5 - 6 hour). And for me it is stable. But I love overclocking memory ram, especially when it is some great piece of ICs :) High voltages aren't safe but with good airflow and "control of the user" we can help them not to die. I am not so crazy to do ORTHOS or to play games on such voltage. I really like to OC ram on high voltages, because results are more promising and we can simply see who of manufactures supplies us with good stuff :) G.skill HZ are good binned D9 on perfect PCB (Brainpower 6layer) and I just wanted to show it.

For everyday using I apply voltage below 2,25 :)

realmeat maybe you should consider joining the safesystems.org forum :D
this is for extreme users, that take the risk of frying their hardware.
of course we all try to aviod any damage to the hardware, but sometimes sh*t happens....
and rma...why not^^ at the moment the manifacturers' stocks are full of ram and they want to get rid of it (to re-raise the prices) anyway.

I ordered a Pair today and an Asus P5N32-E SLI mobo, can´t wait to see how they perform.

Old HZ 6400 have performed quiet well (very similar to HZ 8500 on P5B Deluxe). But I had then also very old HZ 8500. The difference on P5B Deluxe HZ 6400 - 8500 was obscure. They performed both well, but CL4 was much better on 8500. And on P5N32E-SLI HZ 8500 just knocked out 6400. :) That my 2 cents.

What are the speed thresholds for the timings?

What I mean is, at what speeds do you have to turn up the latency?

On 965:

3-3-3-8? ~ 400-435 Mhz ?Voltage?
4-4-4-12? ~ 436-561 Mhz ?Voltage?
5-4-4-8? ~ 562+ Mhz ?Voltage?

On P35:

3-3-3-12? ~ 400-485 Mhz ?Voltage?
? ~ 486+? ?Voltage?
