Gigabyte P35-DQ6... 500MHz FSB NO PROBLEM! + dual 32M 603MHz 4-4-4-5 RAM STABLE!

Here are some shots of my P35-DQ6.

Overall, it is a nice board, few quarks here and there. Early testing allowed me to easily sail past 500MHz FSB on a dual core E6320.


I will update the following shortly:

1) How to remove crazy cool on the back of the board correctly

They kept the same I/O layout from their P965-DQ6. I personally like the way asus refreshed the rear, I think gigabyte should at least ditch the printer port and add some E-SATA ports. Dual NIC's wouldnt be bad either.

Every cap on P35-DQ6 has a plastic skirt on the bottom for perfect seating and alignment. Something you dont see on any other boards.

Take note of the screws that secure the north and south bridges. Unlike other boards that use plastic clips, you can remove a little more heat with a tighter clamp.

For those that really need 3.35V of ram voltage. I should note that my multimeter reads about .1 over what it is set. So 2.45 (+.65) reads 2.55 on my multimeter.

Yes, P35-DQ6 got some ram clocking ability. What was only reserved on ASUS boards and 680i boards we see on the P35-DQ6! 4-4-4-5 @ 603MHz DUAL 32M stable (2.5vdimm in bios, 2.6Vdimm REAL)

500MHz+ on the FSB is easy. I hit a wall at 525, not sure if it is the CPU. Same CPU in a commando hit ~550, ill try other CPU's.

heh, that is for the front audio.


Gigabyte made it extra long because of the heatpipe. This way you dont really have to fight plugging it in.

It just shows "OK"..the early 965P-DQ6 bios used to show the actual voltages, but they removed it...pity.

Please post how you accomplished 500x7...as in what bios options you altered.

To reach 444x7 i adjusted the Vcore to 1.3750V and increased the DDR2 voltage to +0.4V, as in 2.2V.

I left the (G)MCH/FSB and PCI-E voltages set to Auto, PCI-E frequency was also set to Auto. Memory timings were manually adjusted to 5-5-5-12.

thats just the way their doing the Solid capacitors.
its a new way thats for sure but i think its a mfg upgrade to install them easier.
also prevents caps from being bent over.

Those are the dual BIOS indeed. Gigabyte now uses a serial bus based flashrom for BIOS and there are two of them.

Hi Richard, the two larger chips you are refering two are Pericom P12PCIE switches used for ATI Crossfire.

This is so you dont have to manually use jumpers or a slot card (like on nvidia 650i) to configure SLI/Crossfire.


I am still testing the board, but I hit a firm WALL at ~525. Not really sure what is causing it. On the P5k deluxe, same wall is ~535.

It could be the CPU, but this same CPU I was able to do 550 on ASUS commando. I will try other CPU's later such as E4300 and E6420.

The heatsinks look silly but they do look like they'll do a very good job.

The skirts are just a fancier way to mount. I cant talk about all the advantages simply because i dont know them... but these skirts are what you see on high-end electronics.

I think the squealing comes from coils, someone maybe able to answer better. To me, this board is dead quiet, but I wouldnt know until I put a quad core with 1.5Vcore+

P5K Deluxe is an excellent board. My board died shortly after installing for no reason, but I am RMA'ing and have a new one coming shortly.


Right now I cant recommend. Stick with a 965 based chipset or hang in there for another month. Then decide.

I noticed the plastic caps myself but didn't think much of them...in that i didn't know what function they served. The heat generated from the various heatpipes seems much cooler the my P965-DQ6...add to that the nature of the heatpipes means one of them is close to a fan which is sucking air/heat from the heatpipe.

Here's a SuperPI run i did, see sig for settings. Memory is running 1:1 with 4-4-4-12-2T timings, 2.0V

425x8, Vcore set to 1.400V. (G)MCH and FSB set to Auto, PCI-E frequnecy set to Auto.
I ran all the SuperPi tests....is 15m 51s good or bad?

Irev...can you also confirm the quirk i noted in Q-Flash..as in only one 1MB bios chip being listed and lack of being able to flash the backup bios?

I know GB say this a safety/design feature...just want indepedent confirmation.
Also...have you noticed they have gone back to using the slower STT flash parts?...the P965-DQ6 used different flash bios and the flashing process went much faster.

Some more tests, Latest build of Everest, and some HD Tach results using a 32K stripe, RAID 0, did a quick and long benchmark, then i installed Intel Matrix Storage Manger 7.5 and enable writeback cache.

So it has real dual 8x slots? Or 16x+4x like the P965?

Why does this keep on resetting back to stock when I try to overclock. Same problem as before with the DS3.:mad: POS GB. How come this won't go past 426x8 even when it is set to 438x8 in the bios?

I am at a loss to explain also, it's either the CPU or memory...people have suggested a CPU will only reach a certain FSB, some porcesors get to a higher FSB then others.

Anything past 448FSB and my bios disables the overclock. I have tried a 6x and 7x multi.

No, it's 16x + 4x electrically, if you use the second PCI-E slot as in add a second graphics card then the three PCI-E 1x slots won't work/disabled.

probably because your OC is failing. P35 seems to do a much better job of reverting from a failed overclock than 965.

Both P5K and P35-DQ6 seem to share the same ability to recover!

I agree with that, the bios is better at a fialed OC, it'll try 3/4 times then disabled the OC in bios.

It is failing at certain CPU clocks. I tried 438mhz and it failed but at 444mhz it booted up just fine. Does that sound right? Say if I tried 486x7 then would need to increase the CPU voltage? It is 1.45v now. I can get the memory up to 533 5,5,5,15 no problem. Also is there anyway I can increase the memory performance as it seems lower than my BX2.

Those plastic skirts are for support and aligment purpose. The caps on this board are surface mounted and not thru mounted. Thats why those skirts are necessary to ensure the caps sit vertically on the board and not tilted or misaligned.

FYI, surface mount means that the contact legs of the device (can be caps, chips etc) are soldered directly onto the surface of the circuit board. The tiny resistors and ICs used on this board are surface mounted.

Thru mount means the contact legs goes thru the circuit board and is soldered on the opposite side. The inductor coils (those black square boxes)are such examples.

I think I figured it out after a failed overclock. If it fails for me resets to original clocks I had before like 444mhz on the boot up screen. All I did was completely kill the power to the motherboard by moving the selector on the PSU and turn it back on 5 seconds later and this is what happened. I did this twice and it seems to work so far. Very odd indeed.:shrug:

Just 500 FSB and "2.40" in the multiplier setting.
The options in the multiplier just dont make any sense to me

it means that you can overclock CPU without overclocking memory...

So (G)MCH/FSB and PCI-E voltages are set to Auto?
Have you left PCI-E frequency set too Auto or 100?
DLL RAM setting to Option 1 or 2?

What's your DDR2 voltage set at?, what brand of memory are you using?
I'm starting to think the G.SKILL HZ won't allow anything past 450FSB.

OCZ reaper 8500 @ 2.30v
All subtimings set to auto execpt 30 on that big one.
DLL option 1 (havnt seen it make a difference)

Did you disable No-Execuate Memory Protect/C1E Enhanced Halt/Thermal Monitor 2/EIST Function/Virtualisation Technology?

Those are at default.
Im quite newbie at oc'ing so i havnt even considered those options.

Very nice man! This board looks promising. I am getting the GA-P35-DS3P but expecting similar results.

Also, running 1:1 is not faster. I run mem at 2.5x and get better benchresults than at 2x. It can improve stability though from what I understand.

Could you try to test the maximum fsb?

I reached 500x7 3.5ghz. If I try higher then it just keeps rebooting. I am satisfied right now.

Fully agreed. They have been around for ages. Its just that we don't usually see it being used on mobos.

These skirts are necessary because the SMD caps are installed via machine and not by hand. The caps have to be oriented in the correct way or the placement will be wrong (it could be a disaster if the ploarity is reversed). Those plastic skirts are for that purpose. Notice that 2 side of the skirt is pointed with the other 2 are are not. This ensures that all the caps are in the correct orientation when they are fed into the machine and installed.

small update, been testing lots of ram and water cooling.


Overall, the heatsinks actually work well in water cooling environment (no airflow at all).

P35 i think is better than 680i...

I have first problem with this mobo ... if i am at 500MHz FSB, somethimes my PCI graphic card shut down for a while (monitor is shut down too) ... at lower FSB is everything perfect ...

i still believe that the p5kdeluxe has proven to do better. But this board is also looking pretty impresive.

Asus and Gigabyte both offer competitive boards that have a lot of features. Gigabyte offers a better cooling solution and higher quality components. If you have a case with little to no airflow, I would recommend the DQ6.

The Asus will O/C a little better in both FSB and RAM, and costs less.


As for 680i Vs. P35, this is an easy answer. If you plan to go SLI, then you are forced into a 680i chipset. If no SLI, then get a P35 or 965 without question.

965/P35 are a lot easier to overclock, and much easier to keep stable, and much easier to reach higher overclock. 680i takes some time to tune, and I personally hate it.

Just drop by that i've seen the guy @ VR-zone hit 615 FSB on the cascade.

Good to hear, its whats stopping me from buying a DQ6, Im having troubles convincing myself to buy the Asus P5K

DQ6 doesnt have that much droop, just a hair more than the P5K deluxe.

Would be nice to have though.

well stats show p5k deluxe is just better overall. even with price.

the only benefits the gigabye has over asus is the cooling.. either way.. whatever you buy is going to turn out well in the long run.

Ide still recommend the asus p5kdeluxe. cant wait to save some xtra cash to buy one for the july price drops ;)

Okay, I've searched everywhere!

Can anyone shed any light on the TRD Phase adjustment setting?

Also, there seems to be no TRFC adjustment in the Bios, or is it just under a different name?

yup, pretty much.

Both me and Pedro Rocha have already killed our p5k deluxes, hopefully these are isolated cases.


But you are right on the money, P5K deluxe is better cept for cooling... but both are very capable boards.

I am at 375 x 8 2:3 ram 562Mhz.

Vcore 1.375v
Vdimm 1.95v

No other changes, what can I do to improve me fsb speed or is it just a e2160 fsb wall. I have a P35-dq6 and pc6400 ballistix.

Drop your RAM to 1:1 or at least 4:5.

I've given up...i changed memory, maxed out all voltages...i cannot get past 450FSB. It must be the CPU.

I test the fsb at 1:1 I only added the memory clock after I hit the cpu fsb wall.

Ive seen the odd few results which made me think their might be some magic combination to push it a bit further.

That last bios screen showing profiles in the bios, Ive not come across that! Im using the f3 bios that shipped with my P35-DQ6.

454 oc fail kick in

P35-DQ6
Xeon 3060 multi x6 1.450V only 2700 mhz.( is good for 3400+ mhz )
Corsair XMS2 8500 Dominator run at 1-1 ~900 mhz 2.35volt 5-5-5-15 ( auto)

I just wanted to update with new E6550 results. Hitting FSB wall of ~570ish.


After using this board for awhile, it has really grown on me. Very pleased with it. Supports E6x50 series no problem, and O/C's them very well :)


I will have more photos and more results soon.

Any1 tried whether Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme can fit on this fabulous board without any clearance issue?

I can hit 540+ on some of these new E6550 i am testing without a problem, then I hit CPU FSB wall, not related to the motherboard.


I can hit 550MHz FSB w/o increasing any mobo voltages at all! Rather impressive.

When i run tighter timings on the ram (4-4-4-5) i gotta bump up the vMCH

So the extreme version with the extra heatpipes can fit confirm? very confirm? cause it is gonna be a heavy investment for me lol

its ur TR running parrallel to the ram slots?

I got my P35 DQ6 today, I have removed the heat pipe cooler and crazy cool getting it ready for some water.

It's quite a nice heat pipe cooler and works perfectly with watercooling and a bit of airflow. I've kept mine.

Yes, extreme fits fine.

why pic? It fits. No problems. It comes close, but fits.
