Activiation Period

Guys - I thought it would be nice to come over to this site and start some productive discussions about things I enjoy and decided to register on May 2, 2007.

Once I registered, I had to wait for my account to be validated for 4 days. I find that a very long time to wait for a simple forums activation. Heck, I got my Newegg shipment faster than my account here.

I am not trying to be a :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana: for my very 1st post but found that the process for becoming a member here was a little annoying to say the least. I hope you guys can speed this up for future members eventfully.

I'd say it's better to wait to be activated, than have idiots and spammers about on the forum. If anything, that is probably the best deterrent to the sort of thing XS wants to prevent, while genuine members are left unaffected.

Four days is nothing compared to the amount of knowledge you will gain once you are here.

i think the reason activation takes longer is to prevent those that are banned from trying to register with a new username. it just takes a little patience. you can basically read everything here anyways without registering, so you just had to wait to post

I think Fugger is the one that does all the activations, i could be wrong though.

mines was pretty quick :)

Mine also took a week or so, I registered last Wednesday I believe and got activated today. But I suppose the wait is worth it, we at daclan had been getting board at toms because of all the n00bness and so I wanted to come to a place a bit more 1337 if you know what I mean

it's cool, I didn't mid too much since I knew I was going to enjoy it here, tomshardware is a bit too boring for my tastes (even know I have over $5k posts there)

pff 4 days.. i signed up with 2CPU & [H] like 3 WEEKS ago.. & still havent been activated

Makes sense to me. My activation took a few days, i didn't mind to much. At least I was still able to read topics :toast:

I would give up waiting after 3 weeks. :)

We get so many new members daily and we have to check alot of things to verify a new member. We do this to keep spammers out so it may take a day or 2 to get people activated but its worth it.. Sorry if anyones activation was a little longer but its for the good of the site to keep it nice and clean:D

Hey guys, you also have to keep in mind I am trying to distract the admins as well, cause well we know they just sit there and toss the BS all day, playing assorted FPS via LAN in Fuggers basement ;-P. ( I KID I KID!)

As you can see we have so many members here right now, so you should know better that administrators have a lot of things to do. 4 days aren't enough for administrators to get their tasks to be done.. All you have to do is just be patient. :)

Wait, you're saying XS doesn't have an overload of spammers and idiots?

We do but I try to make it difficult to spam here and when they do they are removed in minutes of posting.

hey man, i signed up right around when this place started gaining popularity. didn't make my first post for a few years. then become active for a few more. how's that for an activation period. when i first came here, i thought it was "too hardcore" and didn't want to bring my noob presence. now it's more of a combination of me being up a bunch of levels and the forum coming down to more mainstream (although still way above the others)

That said, I don't think the activation period is a big deal at all. In a lot of other forums, they have a 3 day period mandated before posting because of the constant innundation of people asking for help for the same questions that have been answered a million times. By delaying the activation, they can either have a chance to actually search and find out the info or give up and go back to playing their xbox's

Spot on Ziddey. I agree. Helps you soak in the particluar forums "culture" too. I must have lurked here for over a year before even registering.

I understand you Carlwill. Alot of forums have longer activation these days, and it's for the best, and I think we can all empathize with having to wait especially when you have something you want to ask this second. BUT, unless your question is:

Ok....blood is gushing out of his arm and I think there is a broken bone what do I do?

You can probably wait a few days and just read. LOL :p: :D

(BTW there would be better resources then a forum for that particular question. So don't try that at home!)

I need to stop getting distracted while posting.

I've been lurking for the last couple months, waited a few days to be activated. Not a big deal all in all. Quite reasonable.

Just a few, but we take great pleasure in grabbing the spammers as fast as possible and banning them..
Got 2 yesterday am..the posts didn't last 10 mins and I enjoyed sending them on a loooooooong vacation..:D

I'll say that my activation went pretty fast, maybe a day or two.

Which is a lot better than OC xD; I've sent them 3 emails and have waited over a month now. so I've given up on that. Here feels more like home anyway. . .

My activation was xtremely fast, It was about 3 hours then i was ready to rock and roll.

I had to request to be activated personally, after waiting for well over a week. Fugger sorted me out there, all credit to him. Still, I agree that this whole activation period thing is good. Keeps out spammers, and makes people read the forums for a while before filling it up with questions that have already been answered.

I know I got LOADS of reading done whilst I was waiting to be activated, and I've really learned because of it.

I'd just like to say that this is an amazing forum, with a really great community from what I've seen so far. The technical expertise possessed by some of the members here is astounding, too. Keep it up!

as for the delayed activation, one should understand that there is a reason for people to take their time to activate an account but there are scripts that would automatically activate everyone but unfortunately it does allow spammers to flood the forum more easily.

I waited quite a while to be activated too. Quite a while = I wanted to post and couldn't, and wanted to subscribe to threads and couldn't.

I can see how it would be frustrating if someone needs help asap and wants to post but cannot do so.

BUT, I plan on participating here for a while. What's a few days of waiting (especially if it helps reduce spam), if one plans on staying around for a while anyways. ALSO, if someone only intends to register to ask for immediate help, they'll likely be a leech rather than an asset.

Guys could you please take your criticism in regards to nn_step to a different level?
your at the level of pointing at him and making fart sounds and id like to have you at the level of using complete sentences to describe what annoys you so he might actually listen to your criticism and evaluate it. thx :D

I know the pain of the OP. My first attempt at an account here never actually received the activation email at all. Dil-Tech was the original name, but as I never received the email I made this one, which I received the activation for within a day IIRC.

sorry about the problems, i hope we can manage to handle all new registrations properly in future.
