my Laing ddc2 pump top mod (56k warning)

so last week i got my new laing ddc2 pump from england, and since i'm very cheap..:D i decided that i'm going to mod the top part of the pump, so i can fit 1\2" tubing to it and at the same time increase the performance of the pump.

Ok and on with the mod. after dissembling the pump i took out my trusty drill and drilled a hole right at the middle of the top piece:

i chopped the inlet and the outlet with my dremel clone like so :

i decided that it would be best if i cut a little bit off from the barb that was going to be glued to the outlet, cos to me it looked that it was too long.

the barbs glued to the top piece. the glue that i used was araldite, it rocks :D

after i had made sure that the araldite was dry i started to filling process. the stuff i used is called chemical metal putty. good stuff too, when it dry's, it's really hard but it can be sculpted.

there was a lot of nasty holes after the sanding, and i noticed that the form was not symmetrical any more so some more putty was needed:

i'm really happy with the job i made not too hard to make, it looks nice and more importantly it works like a charm.



this mods source of inspiration were: coolmiester, karhu beer, petras top.

Good job. you got a nice finish of the pump.

It's a great mod. I would do it, but then I can't clean the pump.

why wouldnt you be able to clean the pump witht is mod?
the bottom is stil screwed to the top with the 4 standard screws.

this mod was inspired by petras top, and it's well know fact that moving the inlet to the top of the pump will increase flow and and head pressure and i guess that barbs with bigger ID can't hurt. :rolleyes:

alright here are the numbers from the GPM test, and i got to say i was rally pleasantly surprised, the mod actually did make a difference.
i did 5 different fillings and counted the average value of those 5 times i filled the bucket. i took few other pumps as comparison:

I want to do this mod myself. Araladite is like epoxy glue or it has different base :confused:
I look for similar glue from henkel group :shrug: I'm sure that araladite isn't available in my country. THX :eh:

SharkerSk yes it's pretty similar to epoxy, it only gets a bit harder when it's becomes dry, almost hard as glass...when epoxy has slightly elastic finish when it's dry..... welll if you have made the mixture correctly of course :D

but i think that you will find araldite in Slovakia too, it's not that rare, your local hardware store should have it.

also there was a swedish gue who did something similar too, but he did not put the inlet to the top of the pump, he only modded the barbs to bigger ones

actually the first idea came to me to do the mod from petras derlin top, and after that i started to search if any one else had done anything similar. your mod did come up but so did a few others and so i just took the best features from those mods and made it my own, there is to me atleas a lot of different stuff i did in this mod compared to yours.

morality issue like copyrighted/patented idea and that you should have asked permission first before copying "his" idea...

in other words, give credit to whom its due...

but of course this is XS, where almost any mod is possible, and freely sharing ideas/ and worklogs with lots of pics is best and most welcomed...

Seriously, i would not have posted my own guide on how to mod a top here and here had i not wanted people to have a go themselves.

Our ideas get used frequently - look at the original Danger Den Sli NV-6800 blocks we came up with and we never complained about that.

Call me old school but i wouldn't feel comfortable taking credit for somebody else's work.


@ Solarfall - 1 Imperial gallon = 1.20095042 US gallon was mentioned just in case you hadn't taken it into account when doing your flow test comparison with other pumps.

actually did it like this 1 US gallon = 3.7854118 liters. measured that with Desi liter cup, so i should be pretty accurate.

Ok, there are 8 ounces in a cup which is the same as a pint, err or 2 half pints? Because there are 2 pints in a quart and 4 quarts in a gallon. And everyone knows that there are 32 ounces in a quart so there must be 128 ounces in a gallon. But Noooooo... in some places they have 164 ounces in a gallon. But everywhere there are 4 quarts in a gallon so then a quart must be bigger someplace too. 41 ounces in a quart??? Wtf??

Well, the ounces are bigger too! This means there are two types of "Cups" In canada they use Imperial gallons but US sized cups. No wonder everything in the US is more salty. The Imperial gallon was based on the volume of 10 lb of distilled water weighed in air with brass weights with the barometer standing at 30 inHg and at a temperature of 62 &#176;F. In 1963 Sounds like something we would do to modernize the US system lol.

huh another ddc mod, can't say that i have seen that mod.. but its pretty much that same idea that i made, but does not look as attractive as mine :D

BTW does any one know where i could a pressure gauge.. would be interesting to test the Maximum Discharge Head that my pump does.

the pump was bought from england ( over-clock.uk) bards i think were from US not 100&#37; sure about that, cant remember...

haha yeah i guess this thread is quite old now but i personally have no problems in people asking stuff or commenting still to this ancient thread, this mod is still one of my best achievements in computer part modding, and the pump works still like a charm :D
