Is there any program that can tell you? or you have to open the heatsink no matter what to know?
Also, can the RAM hold you back in your Overclock? I mean, if you use super-cheap RAM can that bring you a strap? like some cheap memory would only let you go to 350mhz FSB but some good memory would let you go to 420mhz, can that happen? is this possible?

The simplicity of your questions contradict the complexity of your rig...
But anyhoo, yes CPUz does identify the manufacturer info on your ram, though the only way to know for sure is to check underneath the ram heatsinks, which may void the warranty.
And yes...cheap memory doesn't scale as high as good memory...sort of like how a suzuki can't run as fast as a subaru.

The reason I think my RAM is holding me back is because I cannot get 400mhz stable so thats why I think is my RAM.
I tried everything (I mean everything) but nothing worked so Im getting to conclusions that my RAM might be the problem. SPecially since they are using proMOS chips GRRR
your ram rated @ DDR800 4-4-4-12 2.1V , if they can not run @ advertised specs that means that there is something wrong with them . set your memory to DDR800 unlinked with 4-4-4-12 2.1V and test for stabilityQuote:

Some modules will use the same IC during their entire 'marketlife', but most will vary depending on availability and cost.

So according to the reviews of this great G.Skill memory, its a great overclocker and one of the best memories in the market right now. I been reading some of them and a couple of them say they are Micron D9GMH (more reasons to buy it hehe)
But there is a review, the one from March 28 that says in Other Thoughts "Everyone here knows it was D9 chips, but price reduction has given seconds thoughts. Heat spread was open to check (warranty now voided LoL), the new batches are NOT D9 CHIPS. Overall, they are still excellent rams."
And this is where my problem is, now this guy made me think again, is this memory really D9GMH?.
Now I feel kinda better to see that there is a new review on March 30 that says "Pulled off the heatsinks and they really are D9GMH chips. The chips are labeled: '7CD22' and then below that 'D9GMH' (so I assume newegg is still shipping D9GMH) and thats why Im asking if there is any program that lets you see what IC you have because even when removing the heatspreaders from the RAM doesnt void your warranty, I still woulnt like to do that.

what volts on the cpu and what are the temps at idle and load?
at your current settings is it orthos or superpi 32m stable?
GSTech just told me if they were manufactured in 2007 then they are either D9GMH or D9GKX. i'm not sure if he mean D9GCT or not because that's what i've been hearing. either way... i have a set i just got a couple days ago and i'm going to rip the heatspreader off when i get home. i'll let you know the results.

D9GMH it appears.
My CPU is currently at 333mhz FSB x9 at 1.35v (1.34 in windows) idle temps are around 36c in Probe II and 46c-47c in load according to Probe II (with orthos 8 hours) 100% stable with RAm at stock speed/timings/voltage and also superpi 32m is stable.
Coretemp shows something totally different, idle temps in 46c for core0 and 47 for core1 :S

I can go up to 350mhz FSB but I need more vcore (1.38v I think) and once I reach 375mhz it will boot but is unestable, orthos wont run for more than 10 mins.
I did the heatsink mod because it worked for Koc (putting HR-5 in the SB and NB) and I still dont get to boot at 400mhz FSB not even with 1.50vcore so what Im thinking is the RAM which is the last thing that is left to think about. Thats why im planning to change it. I also heard from some sites that Corsair is not recommended for the Striker and it is not recommended when overclocking with the striker.
itznfb, thanks for that, Ill keep an eye on this topic this afternoon to see what you got, Ill be happy if you tell me that you got some Micron chip :), also please dont forget to write where you bought it and when you bought it.
BTW, I would also appreciate if you tell me the procedures to remove the heatspread to see what IC you have, once I buy my memory I want to check that out.
Final question, are the D9GCT bad or what?

Ill finally get rid of that b*st*rd Corsair memory which only causes inestability.
D9GCT is just 1 'rank' below D9GMH, its their next best thing

I could only get this kit up to about 960mhz.
i DO NOT recommend taking off the heatspreaders on these either, this was THE toughest heatspreaders i've removed SUCESSFULLY. i've run into worse but ripped off the ICs in the process. which could easily happen with this kit if you haven't done it before.

I got the same G.Skillz. I didn't take off the heat spreader so I dunno what IC's they use but it seems like 1130 is my max. Dunno if that's good or bad.
But i can say 960 is just sad cuz I bought a pair of Kingston PC5400 Value Ram that can clock to 980.
well, let me take back 960 being the max, because now that i think about it, i only tested them on my P5B Deluxe wich is jacked up. so i'll probably re-test them in my commando to see their real max.
that just sad if it is GCT. this even i will ask them what is going on. at least it is not the right stuff from what they told me. or maybe it is still not made recently..... i will let you guys know if i have any info

You just need to look at the sticker on the ram and match it up in this list :D
edit: Walls at 350 or 400 mhz are usually not because of your ram... set your timings to 5-5-5-15 and volts to say 2.2v and even the crappiest 6400C4 should do at least 950
Itznfb, 960, thats pretty bad OC, please come back with some results with your Commando since 960 seems like a bad number for this RAM.
Now that you mention this heatspreader removing thing, I will NOT remove them. I dont want to mess up my RAM. What I will do is probably ask the G.Skill support what IC I have by sending them my serial number. Noway Im taking the risk to open the RAM.
ineedaname, 1130mhz was your max? isnt 2.2v the Maximum for Micron ICs so they wont get damage or burn? I dont think you could do 1130mhz with 2.2v
BTW, you did that with 5-5-5-12 or something like that right? I dont think 1130 can be done with timins of 4.
G.S technician, do you think the RAM Itznfb has was manufactured way long before and thats why he got D9GCT? I just bought mine today and I hope they arrive with a good D9GMH IC.
I know my RAM has proMOS IC's. Default voltage is 2.1 and for them to run stable at 900mhz I need to put 2.2v
I will try putting the timings 5-5-5-15 and volts to 2.2. Ill come back with the results if not today probably tomorrow

that might be possible. but i can guarantee this, GSKILL will not remove micron from HZ series. just open another "model" if we found some good IC like PK, HK you guys know what i mean. I take this very seriouslyQuote:

those poor RAMs just took a beating :D
but sadly same results as my P5B Deluxe. i believe 960 was max stable. the max BIOS boot was 990, i couldn't get them to boot any higher than 990. they booted into login screen at 990 but froze. 960 through 990 were tested at 2.40vdimm bios 993 was tested from 2.40 - 2.6vdimm with no go.
Hmmm, I expected better results with the Commando board.

So true. Ive taken the spreaders of loads of dimms before and the first one that actually died on me was a GBHZ. It has D9GMH on though, only not all of them anymore :DQuote:

Not really Yellowbeard. I would like to test this memory with 400mhz FSB on other machine but unfortunately, I dont have anybody that I know with a system I can test.
However, there are other reasons why Im replacing my Corsair RAM. First, I want a good overclockeable RAM and because I heard nothing but good things from G.Skill, I wanna give it a try. Second, I need 2Gb of RAM and this pack of G.Skill is a deal I cant let it go. Finally, what better than a 2Gb pack of RAM at 4-4-4-12 timings with Micron D9GMH?
The current Corsair RAM I have is already an RMA. It is a second RMA and unfortunately, Corsair sent me proMOS revision when the one I first bought had Micron D9GMH so it kinda pisses me.
And yes, Im starting to think that is the CPU. I had it booting at 400mhz but I needed an insane amount of vcore (1.62v and it was inestable), I might sell it and then buy a Xeon which has given good results to most people.
don't buy a 775 xeon from newegg right now. they are shipping garbage.
