Just a word to the wise for people that have access to chips based on batch codes. Avoid 7638A742 like the plague. Worst C2D chips I have ever come across. Failing Orthos with 1.45 on the core at 2.7G's and will not boot at 400FSB with any amount of voltage.
similar but a bit better is Jammer's Xeon 3060 with 7638A563 with 3.4ghz at 1.42v http://i4memory.com/showthread.php?t=3771

considering those other clocks i've seen from the OP i can certainly say there is no user error with those clocks................oh boy lucky i didn't jump blindly on the whole Xeon bandwagon :eek:

agreed. i had several 28A's, all sucked. highest was 3.3ghz stable. highest benchable was 3.76ghz. my 29F's are even worse =\

Currently using a 629B. I have had access to a fair few 6600's (100+) and always check them to see how they clock. The current trend seems to be that the newer chips are getting worse for overclocking ability. Just thought I would give you the heads up.
Maybe Intel are getting wise

F are not bad either, I had L628F 6300, hit 3.4GHz stable and L638F 6300 which hit 3.6Ghz stable at ~1.5V

Yep agreed guys! It seems the Xeon's made in the Philipines suck! Mine however is still ORTHOS stable at around 3400 to 3480 but yes they are terrible clockers compared to other Xeons out there.

My L640A820 overclocks like crap as well. I wish I would have know that they are getting worse as time went on. It's too late to RMA it now. :(
I'm a bit relieved seeing this thread. I got a crappy L636A 6300 for my 2nd rig and this thing tops @ 2.9ghz and this with 1.6v. :p:
FSB isn't an issue cause it can go up to 470mhz with 6X multi.
I'm too busy right now to change it, but its lifespan is till April's price drops... ;)

i dont agree with this either. my l631a run 3.15 ghz with only 1.28 volt and 3.6 with 1.4 volt also can reach 3.9 with 1.5 volt and i am just with stock cooler.Quote:

Those of you wondering, they have about 8-9 more. The manager at frys was nice enough to pull his stock and allow me to flat test the CPU. A few of them are really bad on the IHS. This is why the manager pulled them for me. I showed him how to flat test with letters, and he was in disbelief, at how unflat the ihs was.
This frys is located in Burbank in CA. Incase your wondering which frys it is. Price was 309.00 :\

btw my 27B E6600 does 3.75 orthos stable with 1.4v (droop to 1.34 on evga 680i)...better than the avg Xeon result i've seen posted here.
my 6600 28A does 3.9 stable with 1.52 (1.50/1.49 load), not the best but i cant complain
my E6600 does 5.6Ghz at 0.77v :rolleyes:

Thanks for that post. Iv just got myself a L630F 6400. 3.2Ghz would be fine for me. upgrading from opty 146 @2.8. 400Mhz over that should be a very nice increase in speed :D
every newest batches 63xA of E6600 are bad overclockers ...
My Xeon 3060 L630A986 (pack date: 11/15/06) does 3.6GHz, 1.375v Orthos stable, 3.73GHz at 1.4v, 3.8GHz at 1.425v, and 3.9GHz at 1.5v. I run it at 3.6GHz for 24/7. Still runs hot, but apparently not as hot at B chips.
I think Gautam confirmed this stepping was a good one, as well.

The worst one was the 24A, and it primed 3650 or so, followed by the 28A, and each xeon has done 3.9ghz prime and the X6800 only did 3.8 prime, but it ran 3d over 4100...

This just isnt true, once you have a board that can do good fsb(~450+ on 9x) and give stable voltages, you run into the problem of cooling (small temperature changes help alot..L629A Xeon got 80+ mhz prime from temps) along with a nice mount, and then finally you have to deal with your system memmory and dividers...Quote:

Some chips like my X6800 do hit that hard wall, they prime 3810 or so, but 3830 just is a clear NO GO even with more voltage and better cooling by a huge ammount, but others like my L629A Xeon will just keep going and going...

Take your pick, there's now heaps of boards that will do 4ghz on it's ear with a 6600/9x multi.
You're right in that you do have to tame the temps somewhat but clocking on the 680i board for instance is the easiest o/c ever, i was priming @ 3.6 stock volts on everything within the first 30mins of using Intel since northwood days.
it's the same as it's always been, the chip still has to be upto the task :) a pack date of a few weeks later and most likely i'd need .1v more for the same results.
have a drive on a 680/650 board, it's childs play to hit 430+FSB stock volts.Quote:

"B" are better to overclock than "A" isn't it? The only good cpu's I have seen with an "A" were the L625A, L630A and 1 L637A. Good "B" cpu's were L628B till L632B. I have had an L625A (3.6GHz 1.42V prime), an L628B's (3.6GHz 1.4V) and I am testing another L628B..does 3.2GHz with 1.168V..still testing :D
