Gigabyte DS3 Vdroop mod

I have looked and looked for something worthwhile for this board. I have come to the conclusion that:

This mod does not work. At least not for the new boards. Some guy on VR Zone had a whole speel on this and he went off on this mod and that it is not working etc. I can't find one person that has used this mod successfully (besides Kunaak.. and even then who knows).

I am not one to chicken out on trying something new, but the problem is I have installed everything and I would need to take everything apart again to do this, so I figured it would be faster to ask some one here if they knew or have tried it.

Basically my question is this: is this an actual voltage droop mod or am I going to be stuck with 1.48>1.46>1.42 :(

Is there a consipracy going on here or what...

Nothing indeed. The Rev3.3 looks nothing like the picture shown in my first post. We need a pro to take a look at it. I don't have a digital camera so I can't provide pictures.

I have a rev2, and also have a digi cam, just tell me where to take pics

Area between ram slot and CPU socket near the top. There is a chip as you can see in the above pics. That would help those trying to find the mod...

vdroop mod worked great on my rev1. let me look at your pic and see if i can see anything.

edit: you have to get me a way better picture than that...

So on Rev 1's it works. I have a rev 1. Must try it.

EDIT: Actually I have a S3 Rev 1 (aswel as a DS3) and it'll need a vdropp mod. Damn pressler in it really kicks the schitt out of vdroop and I'm getting a quad for it so it looks like this is the one to get the mod first.

EDIT: I'm gonna try the short SMD resister one first... prolly tonight in a Rev 1 S3. In it is a Pent D 945... so eh... any change in vdroop will very VERY noticeable. Speedfan - idle vcore 1.46. 100% WCG load 1.39. Thats a .07 swing.!! Although if this mod works I have a feeling that I am starting the countdown on this board killing itself :lol: The heat off this thing is unreal already. Even the PS/2 port is very warm!

Nothing yet. ST. Patricks Day screwed me up. And I can't work with a shaky hand. But I will do a temp job on it either this evening or tomorrow. just to short out that SMD and see what happens. Hand should be steady enough by then.

Does somebody knows where the Vcore readpoint is?

right gonna have a go at this now.... sorry for delays. I'm gonna do a temp job with a spring loaded connector clib, or a screwdriver... and see what v readings I get. stay tuned.


Hmmm restarted... but that might have been just me bouncing off the comps. beside it. Very small and the SMD and the solder point to the right are quite high compared to it. Easiest would be to just drop that blob of solder but I don't want it permanently... just in case.

Will try with a more precise setup in 45 mins.

OK. Pretty sure the mod in the top picture does not work on S3 rev.1. Will try other mod at a later date. Set her at default 1.31v, and default clocks. (Pressler 945) and full load went to 1.26v. Then shorted contacts on SMD resister..... no change.

Anyone else want to try on a rev 1? People who write about mods that don't work really p1ss me off. Noobs.

I did the mod above on my rev1 ds3. Used copper ink to bridge it. true to it, no droop.

I dunno about you guys but I vaguely get any vdroop on my Rev 1 S3. At 1.4125V most I dip to is 1.395V under Orthos blend. Dip to 1.35-1.36V under the unrealistic TAT 100% two core load.

Hmmmmmmmmm..... I dunno.... I give up!

I've found that there's little consistency in behavior of ds3's. I've had a rev2 set vdimm 0.1v higher than what I chose in bios. I've had a rev1 set 0.1v lower.

On the rev1, I had very little vdrop, but a lot of vdroop. Luckily, the mod removed this. On the rev2, I had an insane vdrop, but vdroop wasn't nearly as bad as rev1. So effectively, just need to set a higher value in bios.

So which mods can I do on my new GA-965P-DS3 Rev. 3.3 ? ?

I've spent an hour measuring things on the board, and I just can't seem to find a VCore read point for the rev. 3.3. Does anyone have a pic of where it is?

Edit: Btw, does anyone else have issues with the board freezing in windows with 1.6v or higher set for vcore? I've got this issue with two CPUs, so I'm certain it's the board.

The 1.6v+ issue, I've had with a rev2 board as well. I ended up settling with the highest 1.59v setting

With it you can lower your Vdroop. Vdroop is the drop between Vcore idle and Vcore stressed.

Yes! Thats a problem for me. Anyone notice that the vcore sellecte in bios is far diff than vcore in speedfan (at idle)?

hi, i think its named undervolting. the vdroop is a reduce of some more voltage.

i think, that there is no problem with the board to boot above 1,6 vcore, because i did a stabil boot at 1,8v (cpu:e4300; you need a nice cooling). on the other hand i was not able to boot above 1,5125v with my old d805 and the same komponents.(I have a ds3 rev 3.3, no ds3p, 2gb ddr2 kit mdt)

Well My chip has had 1.7 before in another machine. just this one freezes when I up it in Easytune, and has problems with the keyboard when done to 1.59-1.6 in bios.

oh sry, i understood it in the wrong way..

is it a usb keyboard? i heard it have not 100% overclockingfunction if there is a mouse in the usb port, maybe keyboards make similar problems..

No! Its a normal PS2 one. See it works in BIOS then when I continue into windows, it will not show up characters when i press keys, CTRL key doesn't work in BIOS. maybe the keyboard needs more cooling! :D

vCore can be measured from the inner leg of any of the numerous vCore inductors around the socket, this applies to every single motherboard. CPU mosfet drain (the "metal plate") works too, drain voltage might be itsy bitsy higher than real though.

I have the vdimm mod if you still need it for the S3 rev1 c1. Also have the vmch mod.

Ziddey - that vdroop mod doesn't work properly.

I have a rev 1, c1 chipset board and this mod didnt do anything with a pencil.

Like my post above. The mod seems to have hit and miss.

EDIT: Tomorrow for definite, I'm getting a proper silver pen for this. I still have a rev 1.

So the location is correct, apparently a pencil won't do it?

Was it stable for you? I see some people had issues after this mod.

Unfortunately I don't have that ds3 anymore, but yeah, I don't think you can reduce resistance to 0 with a pencil. I didn't have any noticable issues after the mod, and indeed vdroop was gone

I didnt get anything from using the same #2 pencil I (successfully) pencil modded my P5B-Deluxe with. No affect on droop at all.... :(

Are we sure about the mod I posted above and the locations? This one is completely different. So I highlighted in 2 other colors possible locations. I tried the first (yellow one) with no change in droop at all, which tells me that isnt the right location. Or is it possible you are supposed to pencil across the (green)?

I MAY try it out on my main rig DS3 tonight here. But that'll be a lot of hassle. Would prefer to try it on my caseless cruncher.

I hate the droop on this DS3, but right now my p5b is acting screwy. I love the pencil vdroop mod but the p5b hates OCZs Reaper 1066 memory.

Finished. No change. Covered the green resister in silver conductive paint. Still droops.

The original mod was the yellow one ;)

I'm gonna try the mod on my Rev 1 C1 S3 in a little bit. I didn't realize how horrible the vdrop is. Setting 1.425V = 1.344V idle 1.325V load. Also have the 1.6V bug, but it usually bugs out when setting 1.56 or higher (multimeter reads less than 1.46V, a full .1V vdrop.)

I can confirm that the vMCH and vDIMM mods work, 10K VR works fine. Can bring it up higher than 3V with only a 10K VR but have only tried up to 2.82V. Did 501mhz Cas 3 with 2.82 and 1.68V on the MCH. Don't put more than 1.74V on the northbridge or it won't post, it has OVP at 1.75V.

Where do you guys measure the Vcore from on the board? You have any pictures showing where?

any of the copper coil backs around the cpu area will show you vcore and droop.
the pwm units will also. 1 leg will show way high voltage which is simply the input voltage of the PWM the other leg will show real vcore.

dont be surprised at all if you see a much different voltage than what the bios shows.

same question. I am still using the board with my Q6600 G0 at 3.6Ghz. That CPU would do far more and stable if the Vdroop weren't a drawback.

ok, done the mod using a bit of solder over the resistor and it works perfectly. i am now running prime stable @3.2Ghz using the stock voltage of 1.275V:up: or 3.6 at 1.38V:D
