Wow... The LCD display is so cool. It has a ton of commands which is displays as it does POST and boot. You can see exactly what the BIOS is doing and if it fails what it was doing when it failed.

For example:

C1: Detect Memory: Detect DRAM size, type and ECC
1F: Load keyboard matrix
23: Check validity of RTC value
50: Initialize USB
FF: Boot Attempt

Very cool!

Windows is currently being installed. Then drivers and BIOS files. After that I will let her lose!

Can't budge 444Mhz FSB. I can't increase the memory passed 1:1 either (@ 444Mhz FSB)

Nice nice nice. Even though i went commando im still considering purchasing this board also. The reason i stopped short was because i wanted to see the boards potential at overclocking memory.

My Aw9d-max couldnt get above Ddr-900 without ridiculous voltage so i wanted to make sure abit got their act together.

You may want to try the new beta bios. You can find it on abits forums.

Doesn't seem to do to well with high memory speeds. Probably because of the 1066Mhz strap. But the 1T can help. :D

the board have some issues with high memory settings, but no that bad below 1100

We take a look now at seeing how well our GEIL PC2-6400 memory operates in this board in both two and four DIMM testing. The screenshot above shows the actual memory settings used in our benchmark tests of the board. We do not modify the memory timings beyond the four major settings in our charts. The balance of memory settings are implemented automatically via the BIOS. abit implements slightly tighter memory and MCH timings than some of the other P965 boards we have tested.

abit AB9 QuadGT
Stable DDR2-800 Timings - 2 DIMMs
(2/4 slots populated - 1 Dual-Channel Bank)
Clock Speed: 800MHz
CAS Latency: 3
RAS to CAS Delay: 3
RAS Precharge: 3
RAS Cycle Time: 9
Voltage: 2.20V

We were able to set our timings to 3-3-3-9 by increasing the memory voltage to 2.20V with our GEIL memory. We were able to hold these timings up to DDR2-880 on this board before switching over to timings of 4-4-4-12 up to DDR2-1030 at 1:1 timings. We then switched to 5-5-5-15 timings at a 7x465 with a 4:5 ratio that resulted in a maximum stable memory speed of DDR2-1163. We tried out our Corsair Dominator PC-8888 and OCZ Flex XT memory but could not get the board stable at memory speeds greater than DDR2-1163.

Our settings of 3-4-4-12 at 2.275V were not quite as good as our ASUS P5B-E 1.02G settings of 3-4-3-10, but due to fairly tight memory timings elsewhere the benchmark results were actually better. We were able to keep this setting up to DDR2-860 before switching over to 4-4-4-12 settings that held stable until we reached DDR2-960 during our overclocking tests. The board was able to handle settings of 5-4-4-12 up to DDR2-1010. Our final settings of 5-5-4-15 at DDR2-1030 required a voltage increase to 2.325V.

I think BIOS releases will help the memory a lot.

hows the NB cooling after putin on the AS5...is it adequate enough...is that nb/pwm cooling real coper?

With a 120mm fan over the NB / Memory / CPU socket the NB is at 35C and the PWMs are between 40-44C during full load after about 12 hours. Abient is 24C

How did you measure "NB temp"??

And did you put AS5 underneath the "OTES"-cooler as well? To get better contact to the PWM regulators?? My PWM-regulators are getting very hot (like 75°C under heavy load and high Vcore, even with a 120mm blowing over CPU area...:confused: )

from what i have read, the digital pwm's could get verry hot. 75c would be a rather usual temp under load. wouldn't care too much about this temps ...

i have put as5 under the heatsinks of the pwm's on my aw9d-max. couldn't see a real difference in temps. but on the other hand, it won't hurt either ...

There is no sensor on the NB, only a "system" temp somewhere on the board showing "in case temp"...
Maybe he used an external measurement?

And I'm not sure about the high PWM temp, without any fan and "high" load drawn from the CPU, they get very hot and the system will crash, I think the cooling wasn't designed for that extreme overclocking, but with a 120mm fan over that area, it works just fine...

I think I will have to do some more tests etc...I don't want to mod my board (because of the warranty), and if it's just a "little" decrease in temperature, I don't care that much...

Make sure that the VRM heatsink is properly touching the VRM's after AS5. When I did mine using the "thinnest layer possible" principle of thermal paste application, I noticed my VRM temps shoot up to 160C at load, then my system would crash. I removed the heatsink and noticed that there was absolutely NO contact.

I guess there's a reason the brown stuff that comes stock on the heatsink is so thick. Anyways, I fixed it by globbing on a lot more thermal paste so now there's at least a little bit of contact. My load temps (at stock voltage) is about 70C now.

so any quirky behaviors with the beta bios? For example, mouse/kb not working. CD roms disappearing. Board boots weird...?

I want this board, i have been dieing for a 1066 board... but its so buggy!!! :(

If abit would get on thier bios support it would be the best board out IMO. :(

I had thought that system temperatures were the NB temperatures... I guess not.

I did not put any AS5 or change the cooling method on the PWM. Someone had mentioned that the AS5 can induce a electric field on the PWM affecting its performance. IDK....

DVD drive disappears sometimes. Same thing happened on the P5B Dlx... strange. The 1T times down work very well at high Mhz. Could use a 1333Mhz strap. Other than that, BIOS isn't bad. It isn't great either.

i don't have the quad yet, but i use an w9d-max. the system temp on the aw9d-max is read from a temp sensor located on the motherboard but definitely not near the nb! may be the 965 chipset has a temp sensor built in, but i doubt its displayed as system temperatur!

i think the bad temp readings after replacing the stock tim with as5 comes from uneven contact surface between the pwm's and the heatsink. this is a known problem at some other boards. don't know if the quad is effected too. would be best to check before applying as5 and reinstalling the heatsink.

don't see any benefit in using 1T and at the same time switching to 1333 strap introducing higher latencies.

anyone else seen any other issues? Very interested in this board.

Those temps aren't nearly as bad as mine. At stock Vcore, mine loads around 75C. At 1.4775V (1.38V@Load measured through uGuru), mine jumps to 99C pulling 140 amps. This is with Zalman Super Thermal Grease on the PWM's.

A couple of us who bought this board from e-wiz are having some trouble. I can't get mine to turn on with 3 cpus (965EE, X6800, QX6700) two sets of ram (cheap wintec ampo DDR2 800, buffalo firestix DDR2 800) 3 video cards (ATI X1950Pro, 7600GT, pci video card) and two PSU's, one of which is an enermax 535w. All parts have been confirmed to work just fine on a Bad Axe 1.

Before sending it back I want to make sure that it's not the starting voltage for the ram holding it back, but nobody else has mentioned this problem that the DS3 originally had as well.

first time i booted this mobo i did with a pair of 6400c4 rated at 2.1 and the board booted up at 1.8 and worked fine , changed after ofcourse

I've had the board a few days from Ewiz and no problems. Gskill HZ's and booted right up.

I like it better then the DS3 and if they fix some of the problems it will be a very good mb.

Downloaded Orthos many times but always get "can not find WORKER.DLL". Any help on this, never had this before.

I'm not sure if I like digital pwm anymore. On the IN9 it ran really hot, and active cooling is almost a must if you want to push it. BTW what are voltage options for this board? If it's anything like the commando, it would be nice.

You got a Quad, that's why it draws 140 amps!! My one draws like 75 amps under peak load!! but why is it dropping the voltage that much? 1,4775V gives me something like 1,44/1,45 under load...I bet it's because it draws less power, so less voltage gets away on the "resistances"...

Digital PWN is cool, but its a gimmick. In the end you have to be careful as it gets hot, and when pushed to its max (See: voltmods) it isn't as good at running out of spec as most current analougle PWM's. Of course im not saying this is the rule, but this is what i have seen from it so far.

At idle (59 amps), mine still only pumps out 1.42V at 1.4775V and runs at about 45C. Maybe I have a weird board?

Yeah I'm RMA'in at the wiz. I just got another board, a cheapo Asus PT890 (VIA) chipset board, and it boots all chips all PSU's all sticks just fine. Oh wellers, sending it back today. I really want this to work this time, hopefully.

I know I won't get one until they have a solid BIOS. It's either this or the DFI Infinity 965. I've never owned anything other than epox (crap for oc'ing), biostar, asus and now gigabyte. I've read ABIT has problems with support because of "internal issues" whatever that means.

I remenber when the RD600 came out saw a few ones having tons of problems and saw other one's with none , and same with commando,stricker, etc etc , kinda liek a matter of luck or something , iam very pleassure with my QUADGT i meant very, best board i have so far even with beta bios i can still boot at 500fsb keeping the 1067 strap , best benching board i ever had, hopefully abit is working on the bios to fix the memory limitation, anyway i like low latency no looking to run 1200mhz 5-5-5 better running 1000mhz 4-4-4-8 or 800mhz 3-3-3-12

Think about it, this board on 1066 strap clocks just like 975 does on 1066 strap. Only it makes it easier to hit higher FSB's. In the end this board could be a force to be reconed with if the extreme guys find it... 500mhz 1:1 3-3-3 benching at 5hz with the 1066 strap would be sick.

Anyways, i have one of these on the way... hopefully the bios issues get worked out soon enough...

Maybe because Abit has not been much since NF7. I thought I would never own another Abit after the last couple but this board I like. If they fix the few problems I would love it.

I stolled this 4ghz pic from a bx2 guy and wanted to compare with mine at same speed cpu and memory
first pic is the guy and 2 me with a QUAD GT no tweaking at all

I'm beginning to see a pattern here with these "connected by a heatpipe" cooling solutions that span two dif chips. It looks really cool and sexy, but it just about eliminates the possibility of each touching flat with 100% contact on both. The pipe, unless perfectly aligned on both sides (across a 90 degree bend) serves to tweak one or the other from horizontal. And one pound of heat goop to compensate is counterproductive.

I know now what I have to do with these things - remove them completely.

Is there a cooler than will attach to the PWM? I would love to replace the NB cooler, but I want something that will also cool the PWMs.

I think I am going to go with a waterblock for my NB.

This is what I was going to use on my PWMs. Only $14.... pretty cheap.

Or I could go crazy and watercool the PWMs.

What kind of good air coolers are around for the NB?

i think u have to cut it bro, i did mine, removed and applyed artic silver on the NB and SB and zalman thermal paste on the voltage regulators

what u gonna do if u need to RMA? I say buy aftermarket heatsinks and stick them on.

hmm maybe i have a sink i can cut up and put on the PWM... but what can i get aftermarket that will fit?

sidewinder has those PWN sinks and also swiftect came out with new longer ramsinks u can either epoxy or use thermal tape.

Great hardware and a buggy beta BIOS, seems too familiar to me.

I'd like to try one, and I'll wait til others confirm the BIOS is ok. I already tried a AW9D-max and was disappointed.

You can't have looked very hard - I've posted SP screens at 514MHz (1M) and 500MHz (32M).

Max FSB on my board, on the stock 1066 strap, without modification and without altering the NB/VRM cooling (not even changing the default TIM) is around 520-525MHz suicide, 505-510MHz stable.

See, that isn't really any better than my S3. Do you think the 1066 strap is a good enough reason to buy this board? That really is the only diffirence between this and mine. 1333 strap for my S3 and 1066 for QuadGT. Hope it's worth $200.

it's up to you if it's worth $200 (although no doubt you would get some $ back by selling your S3).
Plus it's got additional features over the S3 which you may or may not need.

or you could just hang on until the Bearlake boards come out if you're happy with what you got.

I am, 7X515 on a not so good E6300, got the board up to 7x545 with a decent E6600, ended up with 7x525 24/7 on that combination but had to really relax the memory timings past 515 (5-5-4, memory does 4-4-3). Testing Quad Core on it now.

the 1066 strap is worth more than anything else on the mobo.....from what i know S3 is always 1333 strap righ.....well at least on asus p5b dlx with 1066 strap and 9x389 outperforms by enough 8x437mhz and 1333 strap

From what i understand the higher strap is only looser timings and higher speeds that are run by the mch. If you have memory and a cpu that can run (or bench) at those speeds then the 1333 strap will suit you better. But from what i've seen not many combos can run at those high speeds.

Think of it as the difference between ram running at lower bus speeds with tighter timings and ram running higher bus speeds with looser timings. Sometimes the results will be better sometimes it wont.



The higher end of the 1333 strap probably wont come fully into play untill intel releases the 1333bus chips and release the next wave of mch's.

only reason i want the Quad is so i could run my system at higher fsb and 1066 strap since my cpu and ram can handle it, and not have to screw around with booting below 401 and lower multi and then clock gen at start up...that is my only gripe with the p5b dlx....1333 strap at 401 even though my board at least can run at 470 ish and 1066, wish they just had an option in the bios for it

Thats what I'm leaning towards. I'm going to keep my S3 to use in an awsome HTPC I'm in the process of building. I won't really be looking to buy a new mobo until july or august anyway. I'll just have to see what is out by then. Maybe I will be able to go back to AMD if they ever figure out what they are doing.

which model Quad core are you testing?...can you give me max FSB for the model quad core that you are testing...also, please tell me what cpu cooling solution you are using....thanks

Nope, 1066 is always faster. 10x400 1:1 on 1066 with 800mhz memory is faster then 8x500 1333 1:1 with 500mhz memory same timings. Thats 100mhz more ram speed, and its still slower.

/\ exacly ...... 1333 strap would only be usefull for dice benchers or something like that, mabey not even then, those kind of benchers usualy have a few mobos to choose from....totaly pointles for 24/7 systems it kills performance.....even for e6300/6400 it would be better to use a 1066 strap at boot and raise higher with cg at windows start-up.....

??????? i've run my e6400 at 440x8 and 500x7, both we'll say are 3.5ghz. 1M super pi runs were actually a tad faster with 500x7, so i run that 24/7. ram is 1:1 so is in the 1333 strap, being 2000 actual, so i'm confused why you guys are saying 1066 is always faster and such? i admit that i'm no master of straps and timings and what not, but 440 was with 444-12 and 500 is 555-15, and the 500 was still faster in super pi. really the difference is nill, but the extra couple tenths of seconds i attributed to the higher memory speed at 500.

im not sure but i think i saw that somwhere that the gigabyte are always on the 1333 strap.....someone correct me if im wrong

i think the speed difference has a lot to do with manufacturer of the memory and either using SPD or setting the timings manually in the bios or in windows...

if both are running 500fsb with 1:1, how is 1 on the 1333 and the other on the 1066? is that where 1T or 2T comes into play? i thought the "strap" was just fsb x 4 because quad pumped, so anything resulting over 1066 was the 1066 'strap' and over 1333 was that strap. and now looking back at my post, both my oc's would be in the 1333 strap by my thinking! i'll shut up and go do some research!!!:slap:

I am using the QX6700 and Tuniq 120 with a high speed fan. I am still working on max FSB but you cannot use Vista 64 and a Quad Core on this board yet. ;)

so this mobo runs the 1066 strap no matter the fsb b/c thats really nice : )

i doubt 100mhz is enough to counteract the change in latency that intel is forcing on the mch. you're problaby looking at at least 166 mhz to just break even and a bit past that to start seeing better results.

i dont think these chipsets are meant to run high in the 1333 strap. (they ARE meant to run for 1066 bus cpu's however and the move over into the 1333strap is probalby only forced by the bios to allow for overclocking room.)

the nb's can't handle highclocks with tight timings (again, just like most of the time you'll see better results with tight, low speed ram and will only see good result few times with highbus slightly looser timed ram---> not many modules can run this and that's why ddr3 is coming out soon)


point is, most of the time you will not see a 1333 strap run better unless (like i said) you have memory, a cpu and a nb that able to run insane bus speeds.

Booted @ <=400 => 1066 strap
Booted @ >=400 => 1333 strap
So if You want to have 1066 on 440 FSB, You must boot @ 400 or below and use ClockGen or something similar to set 440 in Windows.

As for me, as I have Commando now and previously had P5B-Dlx, I've done some strap comparisions (by doing max Pi16M, software enviroment almost equal in both, slightly better with Commando, maybe ~1sec difference):
P5B-Dlx, 1333 strap of course, 510 FSB 4080MHz E6400, RAM 510 4-4-3-4 and 5m56.xxxs
Commando, 1066 strap (by SetFSB), and to beat time done with P5B-Dlx I need less than 490 FSB :woot:

So IMHO the strap thing is really, really important.

And my questions:
1) 1066 is the one and only on QuadGT, no additional option in BIOS to change this?
2) What V_NB need this board to operate on high (450+ etc) FSB?
On Commando I achieved so far 502 FSB 16M stable with 2,025V (max) on NB, and some crazy cooling (air, but chilled + some fans, with stock mobo heatsinks; yesterday I've installed HR-05 and I wonder what can I achieve ;)).

Hi, I have a problem with my Abit QuadGT...

Impossible to have a FSB > 400MHz :/
If I choose a FSB > 400MHz, the motherboard boot, LCD FF but after screen blue and it's the same in XP with Uguru...

I think that I have a problem with bios...

i wouldn't trust the uGuru software with any accurracy...the software could be interpolating the reading from the bios incorrectly...

1 533,800 and 1066 are the only option on this board
2 i use 1.65 for 500fsb for 401 i use 155, i havent try less than that so maybe another menber can confirm this

if i were to use clockgen or the gigabyte software, easytune, the bios would be say 350fsb, when i raise it in software should i increase vcore then fsb speed, seems logical in that order. also, bios should not be more than 333fsb to stay in the 1066 strap, right? say 340x4=1360, which would not be in the 1066 strap, am i correct? or would i be better off to stay at 266, tight timings, then use a divider say 4:5 or 1:2? would i still be in the 1066 strap with high divider? thanks again
