Taken from my post at another thread: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...3&postcount=61
Ok, I have done some prelim testing on the issue with vCore as it relates to BIOS revision.
Disclaimer: Testing only done in a manner that did NOT put my hardware at extreme risk of burning (I dont have *that* much money to burn)
I have been researching strap vs. vcore fixing that has been going on in Striker BIOS revisions.
I have tested 0402, 0505, 0701, and the new 0802.
BIOSes 0505, 0701, and 0802 suffer from vcore to strap fixing. Check it out:
I tested 3 strap 'zones' (FSB is QDR'ed).
1) Below 1333
2) From 1333 - 1600
3) Above 1600
In the BIOSes that exhibit strap to vcore fixing, typically:
Zone 1 exhibits no vcore fixing, but severe vdroop (setting 1.45 will result in 1.36-1.38 in reality)
Zone 2 exhibits a hard vcore lock at 1.40v, often dipping to 1.37v.
Zone 3 exhibits a hard vcore lock at 1.50v, ranging from 1.47 - 1.52v.
Now the great news.
BIOS 0802 FIXES vdroop issue BELOW FSB1333QDR Strap!
Tested the following BIOS settings:
1.35v in BIOS = 1.34 at load
1.40v in BIOS = 1.40 at load
1.45v in BIOS = 1.44v at load
1.50v in BIOS = 1.51v at load
I am still researching this, and I am going by BIOS and Probe readouts, not from a DMM, but so far the voltage seems consistent with the temps I am getting.
So, in summary,
0402 does not suffer from vcore to strap fix, but only severe droopage
0505 suffers from vcore to strap fix in Zone 2 and 3 and droop in Zone 1
0701 suffers from vcore to strap fix in Zone 2 and 3 and droop in Zone 1
0802 suffers ONLY from vcore to strap fix in Zone 2 and 3. Zone 1 is spot-on.
Hope this helps in your endeavors.
I tried to update to the 0802 BIOS that was on the Asus FTP and it bricked the board.
When the board gets to the DETC DRAM on the LCD, there is a little CLICK and the system resets itself. I've tried 3 different sticks of RAM and they all do the same thing. even tried single sticks.
I believe it was teh BIOS flash that did it. considering, right after rebooting AFTER doing the BIOS flash - thats when it started.
I just tried hot flashing the BIOS from the Striker in a P5W DH board. The flash utility won't do it becuase the boot's don't match or part numbers don't match. Depending on whether I use AFUDOS or AWDFLASH from Asus.
Does anyone have any Award flash utilities that won't do any of these hot swapping checks?
If so PLEASE PM me.
In the mean time, I'll call Asus Tech support and proceed to go nowhere with them.
But at least I know that going into it.
dang, good thing i havnt updated yet...............anyone else try this out yet???
Yea, it worked fine for me.
Flashed via ASUS update utility in WinXP.
Nope, I wanna hear more success stories before potentially getting my unit in for RMA. It's gonna be a real hassle for RMA for me here in Malaysia.
yeah same here.
thanks, very usefull information
Mine was flashed with the Windows XP ASUS UPDATE tool to.
I've not even started talking with Asus Support yet. My goal is to buy another BIOS chip or two. Then I can hot flash my old one.
It has been told before but did you try to leave the motherboard without batery and power for an hour or more?Quote:

THANKS PHIL!
That worked like a champ.
In my desperation (read complete and utter disgust and anger) I overlooked that little trick. With a day to get over it, and moving that machine to the work bench and off of my main desk - I did it.
The machine posts now and the EZ Flash routine shows BIOS 0802 installed.
THANKS AGAIN.
has anyone else verified my findings pertaining to vcore fixing on 0802?
i run my fsb at 1600 so i think i would have the vcore issue, so far im sticking with 0402 for now, intill i get confirmation that vcore issue is fixed around the board.
Yea, at FSB 1600, vcore is strap-locked to 1.40v
Ok, so to much may have been changed at one time.
But, once the system was back up and running wth the new BIOS, I also applied nVidia's 8800GTX driver 97.92
there is now NO MORE cracking/popping in sound while SLI is enabled. also, 3D Mark 05 performance seems to have been hammered out a little bit. Still only getting 20,000 with a C2D OC to 3.2
But i'm happy. System is BACK up, SLI is working without crap sound, I'm free to just USE my machine again.
BTW: BIOS CHIPS are $20 from Asus.
Google helpdesk.asus
OK, so i decided to flash to the new bios and see what it did for me, here are my findings with 1600fsb
1.6315 = 1.42v 1.41v load
1.6500 = 1.44v 1.41v load
as you raise the vcore it goes higher, so i will keep this bios, since the vcore issue for me has been fixed, finally a decent bios.
here is a SS

I still dont think that the voltage difference you are seeing is anything more than voltage variation. Set your vcore in BIOS to 1.30v and it will still be right at 1.40 when measured.
0802 still has the strap to vcore locks above 1333 FSB
You are welcome:toast:Quote:

Striker Extreme beta BIOS 0802
1. Enhance memory compatibility
2. Fixed power Fan can't work after S3.
3. Set DDR2 Termination Max default Votlage to 1.25V (Memory Voltage is 2.5V)
4. Add patch to support Creative X-FI sound Card
5. Speed up S3 resume time.
6. Change CopyRight year from 2006 to 2007.
7. Fixed memory clock mode option may disappear when SLI ready memory is used.
#4 is of particular insterest to me. All I can say is whew. I was starting to get worried Asus would not address this. Since recovering from the UGLY bios flash, I have noticed no sound CRAP while playing around in SLI.
All I can hope is that the flash to the final revision of whatever this BIOS matures into - goes SMOOOOOOTH
I have been using BIOS 0802 for a couple of days now and everything seems to be working fine, I used 0701 before and must say that 0802 feels a lot more stable.
And like others already said the voltage on 0801 is more right on, when raising the voltage to 1.5 I get about 1.47v, which is a big improvement from 0701.
To get 1.47v with 0701 I had to raise the voltage to 1.55 in the BIOS.
I flashed BIOS with a floppy using EZ-Flash and there were no problems.
"has anyone else verified my findings pertaining to vcore fixing on 0802?
"
Well I found out the hard way , bought this board to replace my broken P5W (damn powercuts, was a lovely board ,400mhz FSB with almost no extra voltage required ) I tried to get my E6600 ( week 32a) up to 3600mhz via 9 x 400. I upped core voltage to 1.5 volts just to see if it would post, it did , it booted into windows but 5 secs under orthos it crashed, started messing with voltages , memtimings etc... nothing worked...
Till I installed Probe and saw that the core voltage was stuck at 1.37 volts no matter what was set in the bios. Then I stumbled on this post, updated the 701 to 802 ( just for the hell of it) but voltage lock still occured. Also it corresponds to Loodz post, good work mate hope it will get those mad ASUS engineers fixing it, I want my 3600mhz back as my watercooling setup will arrive soon ....
So to get my 3600mhz I reverted back to 402 bios which allows me to do it 1.45 needed for my cpu ( 1.55 set in bios )
Thanks for the confirmation.
I have verified this on 2 other striker boards as well.
Bad bad asus!
looking at getting this board but i need to know does the asus striker have raid issues?
Thanks
asus employees can't spell....

LMAO i cant believe they cant even spell right, also bios 0802 at 1600fsb the most voltage i can get for the cpu is 1.47@ 100% load......even if i put 1.9v it does only 1.47 ..the strap kicks in.
finally decided on this board. have made an 0802 floppy and formatted a spare raptor..yay finally i get to play again...yay
CAn any1 tell me what the max vcore voltage REAL that their striker boardy can do? any chance of 1.55v? @> or <1333fsb?
complaints about vdroop seem endless....surely it's not that bad...the boards work don't they?? i'm no asus fan...but i'm sick of waiting for more options from other board makers. Hopefully more bios revs will keep improving the drooopy droops...wishful thinking i guess. probaly another month to wait b4 dfi gets their 680i thing out...
You need to get a usb drive and use ez flash inside the bios. Floppies are such a pain.Quote:

max vcore real on striker any1???
depends on strap.
read my posting earlier about vcore to strap fixing.
with 1600 fsb, my max vcore is 1.49v and 1.47 @ 100% load.
They are slow and you have to connect cables. Usb drives is faster and doesn't have cables. There are a lot of usb drives out there for FREE after rebate. Using ezflash in the bios, you do not have to type any commands, just locate bios then press enter. It's really convenient.Quote:

I have the EVGA 680i and the Asus Striker and I an debating on what to keep.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I had better memory and cpu overclocks with the EVGA board but I have spent very little time with the Striker.
Thanks.
you can tell for yourself which one you need to keep by doing some searching on both boards here on XSQuote:

Does anyone know where I can find a guide to overclocking on an Asus Striker?
For the EVGA 680i, IGN put together a nice overclocking guide that took you step by step on what to set things as. I can follow that a bit for the Striker, but each mother board is different, like VDroop compensation.
Here is what I have:
E6600
Crucial Ballixtix DDR2 PC2-8000 (2x1GB)
Water Cooled - PA120.3, Swiftech Storm CPU Block, Swiftech MCW60 GPU Block.
With the EVGA 680i is was able to run at the following:
3.6GHZ with VCore at 3.52 (Temps at 39C no load)
Memory at 1066 with 4-4-4-12, 2T on 2.2 volts
I am trying to get the Striker at the same speed. I am looking for suggestions or a guide.
Thanks.
Is the X-Fi issue only with 8800's in sli or all series in sli?Quote:

yeah the voltage strap is annoying...but:
well; my chip isn that flash at o/c, nor is my cooling...with orthos running my cpu gets to 64c max, about 58 average...
i dont think i would want to put any more than 1.5v into mine...it would be too hot imo.
After 3.3ghz i didnt notice much of a difference in 3d scores anyway...well a little :)
I tried 2.5v memory and got it to 1100 at 4-4-4-12 2T / combined with 440 x 8 i got to 7100mb/s sandra...higher mem clocks only achievable at cas5 and sandra drops to about what i am running now at 800 1T...not worth the extra voltage.
(now at 6700mb/s sandra @400x9 with 800 4-5-5-12 1T) i couldnt get 3.6 stable until i dropped ram fsb to "sync mode"
imo if you have a good o/clocker chip you wont need excessive voltage....i dont think i would squeeze much more out of this chip with higher voltage...i would need mega cooling...unfortunately for me there are many better ocing 6600's (and probably 6400's) out there that i do not own. I havent managed to get 450 fsb running...but my nb cooler gets HOT at 420+...so i wont be going there :)
edit: i set 1.6v in bios and get a reading of 1.55 - 1.57v...it seems to be a real voltage increase because i can boot into windows at 3.7g whereas 1.5v i cannot boot anything much over 3.6...
however 1.57 volts makes my cpu idle at 50c (1.5v = 45c)
Well... it doesn't work for me, not for real.
With 0701:
1.30V in bios. Bios reads 1.41V. Asus ProbeII reads 1.41V
With 0802:
1.30V in bios. Bios reads 1.31V ! but Asus probeII still reads 1.41V and the temperatura is the same as before, so I would trust the Asus probe readings.
Someone more has noticed this ?
On my board, ASUS Probe almost always matches BIOS readings perfectly.
BIOS hardware monitor reads identical to asus probe here...within .01v
maybe my board is quirky??
i know i must be getting more volts at 1.57 (bios monitor and probe) because the cpu gets hotter by 4-5c vs 1.5v probe.
setting at 1.6v gives me 1.57v "real" and incidentally; with my board the 1.6v setting works at ANY fsb...tested 365x10 and it is stable....at 1.5v setting 365x10 is NOT stable. I can even boot into windows at 3.85 with 1.57, but it craps out....
...now have 1.6v "real" by setting 1.63xx v in bios 0701 temp is 51c idle :)
The 802 bios isn't on asus website anymore? did they drop it? I have bios 701 and I'm not liking it, onboard sound pops and fades in and out. Can anyone give me a good link to get it?
0802 bios here mate :
http://www.lejabeach.com/ASUS/Striker/
They removed 0802 and 03 from webbie I think due to mixed results at the users end. Try at own risk !!

Striker new bios 0901 for grabs here :
http://users.pandora.be/OAP/Striker0901/
OMG ! looks great, i have the CM2X1024 6400 C4 from corsair, and this has been a nightmare NO STABILITY not even in default values, now i manage to get the system some what stable with 4-4-4-12 2T / 24 with 1.925v and the 1.2v strapped to 1.2v (if auto will go to 1.52), orthos is fine with a 3D window on the background, its been running for more that 17 hours, but if i play lineage 2, it will restart for no reason... im waiting for the oficial asus release, as i dont want to brick my board.
thank you for the info !!! Cheers !
waiting for next "official bios" which might be forever.
I have 0901 running - mostly out of desperation to have a BIOS that fixed the SLI/SOUND issue. that fix started with 0802. 0901 still caps the voltage at 1.4 above 1333. I need to get to 1.55 volts @ 1600
In case you need 1.55 just put in bios 1.6 volts it will give you 1.55 it's just weird like they disabled all the other voltages with that damn strap....
On Official BIOS should be coming this week. ASUS has been very responsive and helpful in getting few kinks ironed out.Quote:

I have not seen (even with previous BIOS releases) the problem some of you have experienced with VCore being locked at above 400MHZ FSB (1600MHz Quad). The BIOS I have here doesn't show that abnormality either...
I will find out whether I can make it available or perhaps this fix will be part of an official BIOS due to be released later this week.
Hang in there, guys ;)
You must have that magical striker board then, many users are plagued since 0505 release bios with this hard lock at 1.39 volts when running at 400FSB, only option you have to set higher voltage is too set 1.6 volts in bios which will give you 1.55 volts, which for me is too much for my 3600mhz overclock. When you go over 450mhz it's 1.55 volts hard set. Only option to set bios for users is too use 0402 bios , taking into account the large voltage drop but at least you can set it yaself
if you didn't experience this issue with ya baord earlier Bachus I doubt that this bios will be the salvation we have been waiting for... sorry for being sceptical mate. But still glad Asus is working on it and hope this it the good one !!!
I just double-checked, in regards to what you said, Leeghoofd... The BIOS I have here...
@ 410x8 - this one looks good, so far...
1.50v set in BIOS
1.53v Hardware Monitor
1.49v multimeter IDLE
1.49v multimeter LOAD
Let me check above 450MHz then... brb :)
EDIT: ... back
@ 455x7 - same good news, it seems...
1.65v set in BIOS
1.64v Hardware Monitor
1.62v multimeter IDLE
1.61v multimeter LOAD
Might the BIOS you guys need then, at least from what I get here...
Fingers crossed then , if it has the stability of 0901 and these voltages Striker is gonna rock !!!
Are there still issues with Corsair 6400C4 ram ?or are these outta the way ?

Bachus you got 2 stalkers already , I wouldn't call us groupies we are worse !!!!
Nice thread!
Just put together a striker rig and want to find the best available bios.
Add me to the list of subscibers
Bachus 0901 bios is now officially released I hope you have a higher version than 0901 on ya testrig
