What exactly is XSOS and what are its goals?Quote:

Sounds like just what I've been looking for as I have no intention of using Vista with all its DRM crap  :toast:Quote:

when it is ready, unless you prefer a rushed unfinished and crude Version that may not be perfect. In which case, you probably might as well buy windows MEQuote:

Keep us posted
Speaking of Looks, does anyone here think we should Change the GUI up and make it look different?Quote:

So what drivers does this OS use, XP, Vista? I really hope I'll be able to use this OS 24/7 cuz it's exactly the OS I'm looking for, nonbloated, DRM-free, as lightweight as possible yet very functional. Makes me sick when I look at the size Vista requires on your OS partition, I only use a 10GB C: partition and an OS that won't fit fine on that is a very bloated OS IMO.
how do I get this? Sounds freaing great to have an OS that doesnt include all the BS:toast:
XSOS 3.0 is one of the main things I am really excited about in '07 :D One other thing is K8L and its mainboards.
Looks already really nice nn. Is it a stripped down version (featurewise) or does it just lack what nobody needs?
I guess you didnt make it worse than previous XSOS, so it will be more than great. :)
Looks good but same q as above. :toast: :toast:Quote:

I think that changing the gui is less important. If some people wanted to contribute a wallpaper pack or something to spice things up a bit, that might be an option, but functionality is key methinks :). I'm sure that I and others would be willing to do some graphic design work though should the need arise...
No, keep it as simple as possible is my suggestion ;)Quote:

It's awesome if you can optimize your games and benches for multi cores by yourself. And only playing with it sounds very cool to me.
Would something like this be possible?
Question, does this OS support "lock pages in memory" setting which is found in local security settings->local policies->user right assignment in WinXP? I'd need that feature...
I'm guessing that like the previous versions of XSOS we need a valid Windows licence key, but will we need a vista key to use Version 3?
questions -
how good is the itnernet support, is it as easy to get online as XP?
drivers, which ones should I use?
32bit or 64bit
I R Very Excite!!
I'd like to know this too.Quote:

3) If I need a valid XP license key, do i have to activate this XSOS though M$ after installation?

7) Dx10 support?
Not trying to be PIA, but I have been roaming forums to determine LINUX can be used for running games. Unfortunately, that answer is not very solidly. It can run some, but not others. I support your efforts, but I'm trying to understand what operating system and how one can use it instead of XP or VI$TA.
Thanks ahead.

Thanks. I didn't mean to be redundant. This beta OS seems like a what I am looking for.
Ultimately no keys are required and we are not going to check everyone to make sure they own a Microsoft product. Ultimately we are supposed to suggest you own one M$ os, however I couldn't care if it was 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista.Quote:

From one point of view it would be good if it supported 2K/XP drivers due to the more mature and huge selection of drivers and availability of drivers for older hardware since it would make even more sense using this OS on an older setup due to the low system resource usage where older systems will benefit even more.
On the other hand it would need to support Vista drivers in order to be future proof and to be able to use DirectX10 I suppose. Too bad Vista drivers availability is low and none/very low for older hardware. And they aren't yet as great as most XP drivers are, however this will change in time but for some older hardware there will never be any Vista drivers but still this OS would rock as it would be the perfect Vista replacement (if that's not fancying you) for your new system and you can't get everything you want but seeing you specified system requirements as P3-300MHz, 64MB RAM, 1.5GB HDD space etc. it would be a huge bonus if this OS could be run on not-so-xtreme-systems as well. :)
Since you meantion it has DX10 support I take it this OS does use Vista drivers but are Vista drivers the only drivers that will work with this OS? Some clarification on this point would be good. :)
Yeah, make it fully support aero, but not use any additional system resources ;)Quote:

Looks awesome can't wait to try this puppy out.
Will this allow for critical windows update when they arrive?
How big is the install?
Can it be booted from removable media like USB pen drive or CD (for folding. etc)?
Flash drives are not an option because of the virtual memory involved in the system.Quote:

for ease of use, download Window versions of your favorite applications because we for the most part put Windows Compatibility first and you will see the greatest performance in native windows applications.Quote:

I'm very excited for this. In regards to looks, I've always been partial to the Animus visual style.
hmm, be neat to see the stripped down version, I've got a spare 1gb CF card and an IDE to CF adapter I'd like to put to use :P
Yeah, VM will burn out flash drives.
But I like the option to boot from USB for crunching to save HDD and power usage expense. I've done it in limited fashion on both linux and Bart's PE, but problems remain.
I eagerly await a USB pen drive flash OS that can:
1) install and run Windows-based distro projects (and other apps), including D2OL which uses a java installer;
2) recognize multi-core CPUs and allow me to set processor affinity on multi-core CPUs;
3) Can do NIC/wifi and run related security apps;
4) Doesn't have an enormous learning curve like linux or Bart's PE.

What is DRM exactly. I never fully understood it and its evils.
Cant wait for XSOS V3.0, it it windows based in terms of drivers and general software and hardware compatibility? I hope it wont be like linux, in terms of compatibility and support.
DRM is digital rights management http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Rights_ManagementQuote:

Does this version include quick format?
this is minor, but i hate the vista start button when in classic mode. can you make it look like the one in xp's classic mode?Quote:

Such as DRM What will the DRM do ??
Trusted Platform What does that mean, is it the part about certified drivers?
that Keylogger WTF is that??
Nosfer@tu, man, wikipedia or google-it
nn_step: what keylogger ???
DRM limits what you can and can not do with certain Data or hardwareQuote:

Vista uses NTFS, so you shouldn't have any problems.Quote:

Cant wait to run the beta! looks promising :)
will this support winfs? and any WILD eta; a estimate?
DRM is like sony and blue ray, and their copy protective things, you know, sony is trying to make it so you cant touch a file or record your cd's onto your computer. etc etc etc.
Glad this version includes quick format!
Saves so much more time when i build computers at work and need to test them.

Hi I got really excited when I read this article about DirectX10 over at Bit-Tech.net:
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/200..._gaming/1.html
Have you been able to test your dx10 implementation? Did you notice any of these advantages mentioned in the article, and maby a huge performance boost? :) Hehe
nnstep,
Fantastic work. I look forward to using it, and will definately donate to your cause if I find myself using it. Your time is DEFINATLY worth something!
I figued Vista would be chocked full of big brother programs and was hoping to jesus that there would be a gaming alternative.
You da man...
and just to throw another opinion into the mess... I'd like to see something snazzy for the GUI. I'd like people to sit down at my pc and be like... What OS is this?
Ryan
Personally I like the vista GUI, a lot. But I agree for the most part, I like a GUI that makes people go, "wow thats awesome, what is that?" if not for the comments but just for personal appreciation. Only thing thats a guideline is the GUI should take very little recourses. I know some fancy GUI's out there but they are huge, complex and recourse hogs, big no thanks on those.
alright, I guess I can make an Icon pack and have you guys tweak it to your personal tastes.
NN, you are the man. Been looking for a good Crysis os and this should fit the bill nicely...
Ply
I second that, NN you're the best
nnstep,
XS OS V2 was less than 60mb. What's this one looking like?
Not that I care, I guess it's just a curiosity thing. I'm just looking for a Vista alternative to DX10.
Ryan
it ultimately depends on you the users. (the betas more specifically) the more features I add, the more space it takes up. But less than 700MB is a definite reality but we are making a DVD with multiple OS and applications.Quote:

I agree. An old, flat gray and blue GUI is boring IMO. And I guarantee more people would naturally be more interested in what this is all about if it simply looked "kick-ass". Many guys in particular are genealogically superficial that way. And, if it takes 0% additional resources, why not make it look vista-like?Quote:

Wow, am i intrigued, i cant wait to see what this has to offer, just 3 quick questions though, cus chances are i will be using this on more then one computer...
1. If i go out to say best buy, and buy a program that runs on windows xp/vista and whatnot, will it have issues working with this OS? Or is this basically like a stripped down version of xp/vista to take away all the crap that goes along with it and slows down the computer.
2. Say we dont have a valid xp/vista cd key http://www.lazyforums.net/images/smilies/hsugh.gif will there be limitations to using the OS without one, or maybe annoying popups that tell me to enter a valid cd key or somthing?
3. How will it install, will it be like windows xp where you put the cd in, startup boot from the cd, you get the option to format/partition etc etc...
All i really do on here is run AIM, Firefox/Thunderbird, ghost recon and other games, and tweak the computer thru my hundreds of little programs...i just wanna make sure that that functionality remains. The biggest thing that annoys me about microsoft operating systems is that you can only use one cd key per computer, which means i would have to buy 3-4 different cd keys for our house, which i DO NOT have the money for. Not to mention the fact that i cant justify paying 2-400 dollars for an OS that will be obsolete in a few years. But i like where your goin with this and i really really really cant wait to try it.
1) most Games work and many applications workQuote:

Now you say most, what about the ones that wont work, what kinda programs are we lookin at that wont, are there any specifics? Programs designed for certain things or a certain way?Quote:
