thats gotta be the best layout I seen from Abit in quite sometime.
very clean, no weird connectors. very solid looking design.

now I just hope... finally... that they can make a board that "just works", but if the AW9D-Max is any indication... atleast they are on the right path these days.

Why can't mobo makers put in some side facing SATA connectors?

The fact that their flagship Aw9d-Max board didnt get a bios update for 3 months and the latest bios update killed my sata and others have experienced the same issues. The board looks good but i couldnt recommend an abit purchase unless you were satisfied with it out of the box. Support has been lacking.

5 Phase with bad Sata/IDE placement. Outside of that, it looks like a pretty good board

Looks pretty solid to me + Clear area around the CPU for any type of cooling
So that thing should compete with the Commando?

Is it true that Abit's uguru monitoring solution does not allow temps/voltages to be monitored through apps like Speedfan?

No. A friend of mine with a AW9D-Max uses speedfan without a problem.

The NB heatsink doesn't look like it's gonna cool that well.

What happened to a nice codename on the box a'la the good old MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum days, or even further back with a good ASUS A7N8X?? Or just for giggles the ASRock K7S8X... Where's the fun in having a whacky name on the box??
And all those slogans... Quad me this, Quad me that... Total über power is gonna rock your world, etc... I'm ired of it, give me a good board, that hasn't had half it's R&D cost put into names and slogans. :slapass:

Personally I don’t care much about those features + when AMD relapse K8L we will start to worry about AMD mobos

nnstep, how dare you say that? the only interesting feature i see is max fsb. max fsb is the only important factor in my next mobo purchase.

The bios reset thingie is pretty cool, no? I for some reason can never get over the stigma of onboard sound (use a HDA Mystique for "dolby digital in games" whatever that means. What are two ethernet ports for anyway? I am curious.

ROHS compliance is garbage.

our electronics will alst half as long while cositng more.

If I have to buy the product twice it's less enviromentally friendly than if I bought it once.

I don't know what I would use my 2nd ethernet port for. Why do people need 2 anyways?

really cause you get get a Via 890 chipset with exactly the same features (minus a few SATA) for less than $60 and it'll still be ROHS compliant

So far I am really liking this board, however I encountered one show stopper last night.

1. I can replicate this issue with just about any memory module.

2. Corsair 6400C3 2x1GB was used for the initial test run.

a. Set the memory to 2.4V in the BIOS (actually any setting above 2.3V will have the same issue).
b. Boot into XP, open uGuru, the memory will show at 2.175V or 1.8V.
c. Change the memory voltage in uGuru back to 2.4V as requested in the BIOS. More importantly at this time, just leave as is since uGuru is reading it incorrectly or use the BIOS to change voltages.
d. Run benchmarks, start Orthos, watch XP become corrupted and lock or just plain fry the memory as it turns out.
e. Exit XP or use the reset switch if locked up, enter BIOS, and notice your memory is now set to 2.7V in the BIOS (tried this on replacement modules) which explains the smoke and locked up PC after running Orthos for a couple of hours.

Lesson learned after frying a set of Corsair's good stuff......Check the BIOS settings quickly after using uGuru as they very well could have changed.

A few minor Issues -
1. The board goes to 525 and hits a brick wall. I am sure this is the limit on the 1067 strap. Performance is incredible but it would be nice to switch straps (1333) and take the board on up as it is capable of doing it.

2. 1T setting does not work at DDR2-800 nor does it work by setting the MCH to 800 strap and memory to 533 which ends up being around DDR2-712. 1T at DDR2-667 works fine in most cases on the high end memory modules but had failed with several budget memory modules.

3. Auto Recovery after failed BIOS settings works about two times in ten. The new CMOS switch location is a blessing. Also, the power down and restart after just about any change in the BIOS will have people screaming since Asus and Gigabyte have basically eliminated this on their high end boards.

4. My board is scoring about 200~300 points less in PCMark 2005 than other P965 boards with the same components and settings. Also, BF2 has stutters at times and online game play suffers from these stutters. I have tried a multitude of settings and varying components but the stutter remains, not seen in other P965 boards setup in the same way.

5. I was excited after booting at 6x555, the BIOS showed 6X555 at POST, uGUru shows 6x555 in XP, but actual settings confirmed were 6x266. This happens at just about any setting over 525. I was going to post a screenshot at 6x600 but thought that was just not fair as someone might believe me.

6. The I/O shield does not match the board layout.

Otherwise, the board has been extremely solid, performed very well in most cases, and is light years ahead of the AB9 Pro.

I condemn the use of programs that come with the motherboard for overclocking. All the companies have their own version, and they all cause problems. Something I learned a long time ago, apparently that guy hasn't.

bingo13 is the editor of anandtech, he knows how to clock motherboards.

Abit's uguru is well known as a good OC utility. There is nothing wrong with using it.

Its not about a bandwagon thing if you look around here you'll see that bingo13 knows his stuff. The oc utilities arent all the same. Uguru is one of the best that comes with a board. Its volt readings in windows are sometimes off but its up to the individual user to get the correct readings with a dmm.

It didnt fry his memory. He set the memory to 2.4v in the bios which uguru read as 2.175V in windows which he then set to 2.4v in windows with uguru.

He probably should have measured the vdimm before he set it higher but he didnt so he ended up with 2.7v which in the short run wouldnt have killed his ram but he proceeded to run orthos and bench for a couple hours which definately killed his ram. I say it was user error because we can only trust oc software to a certain degree but that doesnt mean the guy doesnt know what hes doing.

It just seems like your being abrasive for the hell of it. Stop the flamebaiting.

uguru sucks, so does ntune, so does easy tuner, so does the asus one whatever its called I never install them they are useless and they all suck

May the gods of early adoption be damned! It's not thats I'm unhappy with my AB9-Pro, It can keeping me stable over 430mhz on air(which is awesome for a stock ab9) and not to shabby for over clocking, It's just they had to go and fix everything wrong with my boards layout. Makes me one sad panda, but I hope it's an awesome board, the ab9-pro though not with out it's flaws is definitely a step back in the right direction for Abit.

Can't wait for reviews.

I like the board. If I would have designed a 965 board it would have looked much like this one. I hope Abit will have good bios support also. Then we have a winner as it's a little cheaper than the Commando.

Max vDIMM is 3.0v, max vMCH is 1.7v and looks like it has no FSB VTT adjustment, nor 1333 strap...
Commando has 2.0v vmch. DFI P965 Infinity too.

Just got this board, and loaded latest beta bios. Multipliers dont work on this mb. Cpu-z shows either 6 or 9(default). Cpu speed is always 9xfsb. (Just check superpi times). Its fast, faster than P5B dlx anyway.

Gary, can you test if mp 6 really works on your E6300 ?
