That kentsfield looks pretty good. Before you jump into the vapo make sure you stop by the phase forum and read some of Jinu's worklog thread. Some of the SS units seem to be having trouble with kentsfields massive heat output under high vcore.

well, i took a look at the heatspreader and no surprise, it was concaved :mad: the only contact was on the edges.. damn u intel! damn u! made me lap a brand new 1200$ cpu :slapass:!! :) temps r under control now but still hot..

how accurate is core temp? before the lap, temps were 100C on all cores, is that a good burn in? lol

OMG 100*C? I think it is safe to say it is thoroughly burnt in.. Some of the builders in the phase change section can whip together a nice unit that'll handle the kentsfield, it is a beast of a chip but it can be tamed.

I'm hoping my unit will work well with kf. Mine is one of the more recent Jinu builds set up for heavy load. Once kf comes down a little more in $ I might look into it. Plus my board does not allow for upward multi's. Waiting for a new bios or IN9 32X-MAX whichever comes first :D

if your backing up DVD's with DVD shrink and its only taking 4 minutes or 2 minutes for the Kent. then your not backing up anything.

you need to understand that unless you back up the ENTIRE DVD and NOT just the main movie all your doing is pulling the vob files form the dvd and placing them on the hard drive.

looking at your times thats all your doing your not actually recoding the dvd.
take and recode the ENTIRE dvd, all languages all menu's and everything.
it will take longer than 2 minutes. ad encode it for DVD5 not DVD9.

and 4 minutes on a 6600 i can tell you right now i have dropped some DVD9 movies that the main movie was over 6 gigs and i can guarentee you it takes longer than 4 minutes to recode it.
it only takes 4 minutes when you take a DVD5 and only redo the main movie as a DVD 5 cuz it doesnt do anything but copy the VOB files.

and your posting of Nero Re-Code. bullsh|t you didnt recode the entire Matrix movie with Nero Re-Code in less than 1 minute no way according to your picture it only took you 52 seconds to re-encode an entire feature length movie.
im sorry but no way.
UNLESS you are using an EXTREMELY loose compression ratio and the Nero codec makes the movie just as large as the DVD movie and then, once again all your doing is lieing to yourself, all its doing is taking a very loose compression of MPEG2 for a Vob file and recompressing it in the same or looser compression for the nero codec.


why dont you take a movie, then entire movie and redo it in divx or xvid or something. 1 cd or even 2 cd's you will then see how good it really is compared to a E6600
i'll find a picture i had of a program that i used with my 955 XE it used all 4 cores for encoding video. not nealy as fast as a conroe but it was damn wicked fast since it was using all cores.

Just out of curiosity have you tried DVD-Rebuilder with Cinema Craft Encoder? I would be interested to know how fast you can do a 6+ pass re-encode of that DVD :-)

Wow, I can't wait to get my Kentsfield syste, up and running. But reading all your posts, seems that if I wanted to have a fast system I would need to buy expensive hardware/ Looks like I may only be able to use (1) of my (3) Kentsfields to build a system.

On my Precision, I get 14 secs in Cinebench 32bit and 13 secs in 64-bit.

I'm gonna give the Matrix Reloaded a run through DVD Shrink as well and compare...;)

So Quad core is going to be too hot for a good air OC. I'd never be able to hold 3.5-3.6 on air. I was thinking about trying a Q6600 and now not so much. Wonder how water will handle these things.

im using the cm r120 mini aquagate but on the kenty i cant really call it watercooling, highend air probably on par if not a little better..

its all about good contact/good cooling. at first at full load all 4 cores were running @ 100C each and the beast kept on working.. the heatspreader was badly concaved so i had it lapped and i was still not getting good contact untill i lapped the mini gate aswell.. now @ full load temps r around 70C @ 3.7 GHz

as far as the P5W64.. ever since ive gotten the silverstone op1000 psu its totally different story.. mobo components r running much cooler.. for me personally there is no better mobo for the quad-core as of now..

So what would you suggest I pursue for my Kentsfield system? I would like to do Video editing and computer animation. Also,usually leave my computer on 24/7.

How did you manage to run two instances of DVD Shrink? I could open two of them, but when I tried to backup on both, one crapped out saying the VOB file was being used by another process...something I'm missing?

As for controller, I'm using the onboard SAS RAID controller with two 36GB Fujitsu MAX3036RC 15k drives...nothing special. I use that array for the source files and use the RAID 10 array (4x Maxtor 10K IV 146GB) on my server as a destination.

I did the encoding with two source folders and two destination folders, but one encoded significantly faster.

The first went in 3 minutes 48 seconds, with the second going in 4 minutes 20 seconds...

Also found my page file was insufficient...had to go to 8 GB to make it work;)

Arrays share the controller, so, IIRC 1231 has 450 MB/s max bandwidth, two arrays would scratch for it plus the IOps.

Consider waiting for the next-generation of Arecas with IOP341. Currently, only the 24-port version (ARC1280) is available, but smaller ones should be around the corner - definitely worth the wait (unless you intend to use 2 drives ;-)

@Sam, Dell uses 5000X but places a Riser card in order to support SLI. IIRC, officially Dell will only put Quadro FX's for SLI, but 7900GTX's work on Precision 690 (from 2cpu.com)

adding to alfaunits stated,

ive tried dual-array on the 1210 and 1230 and i dont recommend it, for ex. your better @ 1 x 4 drives instead of 2 x 2 drive. unless u wanna use the 2nd array for storage maybe.. that could workout better, dont know..

now, the 1231ml its got 800mhz iop + ~2GB cache, it probably handles 2 arrays better

I wish Areca would make an entry level controller with the IOP341 around 6 or even 4 ports. The 1231ML is their lowest model and not exactly entry level pricing. However, that is one sweet card tho, I love to have a setup like that someday. :toast:

There is no need for IOP341 for 4 drives. Check Napalm's other posts, you'll find one with Arc1230 (not 1231ML) with 6 Raptors giving 450 MB/s - so the old Arecas are good for 6 drives.
For 8 there's already the need for 341. However, at those prices, one should consider a SCSI setup LOL.

The motherboard is a proprietary Dell motherboard with a graphics riser card that splits the one 16x PCI-E slot into 2. But, don't bother. NVidia has thoughtfully decided to block SLI in the newer drivers if you use anything but a Quadro FX setup (which is highly overpriced and performs much worse in games than a Geforce SLI setup).:mad:

So you're saying with less than 6 drives the IOP333 will be equal in performance as the IOP341 with same number of drives? I was under the impression that the IOP341 is still better with the same number of drives as the IOP333 and older. If that's not true and it's just a bandwidth limit, then that changes everything. I wont be using more than 4 drives so I might considered the 1220 or 1210 instead. Also how is the 3ware 9650SE-8LPML compared with the Areca 1220? Since they are both within the same price range.

I cannot say for sure, but I am confident there will not be 4-port IOP341 based Areca. It just isn't worth it.
The 8-port ones will probably come out when they are out of IOP333 :-)

Can you install Windows and boot from an Areca RAID array?

If so, do you need to press F6 to install drivers during Windows install?

if 3ware's stor processor is on par with the iop333, by specs alone id go for the 9650SE-8LPML, 256MB soldered on!

lol that would cut down on time alot if decryption is done from hdd to hdd.. but the problem is that it takes an hour to copy the hd movie to hdd, just as much to decrypt it from the hddvd drive..

hope for multithreaded hddvdshrink/nero hd recode if ever..

Isn't BD and also HD-DVD available with >2x readers? That means reading would take <30 mins (I know it's not certain to do 2x, but hey.. it's something ;-)

I guess it behooves me to say "I'm sorry" here, if only to apologize for Napalms thread resurrection and behavior. Napalm doesn't like the fact that he's got two results saying his Areca may not be necessary for 2-disk RAID-1 and I guess that's just insufficient for him.

The fact that he's in a vast minority of people who can afford stuff like QX6700's that pull 4.2GHz as well as his other hardware doesn't seem to have entered his mind with this challenge, but I guess when we fail to make the same results on notably lesser hardware, boy will our faces be red!

I'm thinking of building a 4 drive RAID 5 array using 1TB Samsung F1's with an arc-1210. My only concern is that since I'm using a P35 board by second physical x16 slot is only x4 electrical. You guys think the x4 bandwidth will hold me back using a 4 drive RAID 5 array? Thanks in advance.

How does this all help performance, however? Well, PCIe provides 2.5Gbps of bandwidth per direction per lane. Considering that PCIe links are full duplex (i.e. they can send and receive data at the same speed), that adds up to a theoretical maximum of (2.5 x 2)/8 = 625 MB/s for a single PCIe 1X link. Now, PCIe uses something called 8b/10b encoding, where every 8 data bits are translated to 10 transmission bits in order to help synchronization and error detection. This obviously reduces effective bandwidth by 20&#37;, and so the actual bandwidth for a PCIe 1X link is (625 x 0.8) = 500MB/s

For 4X, 8X and 16X links, you simply multiply the 1X bandwidth by the amount of lanes. This gives you 2,000MB/s for 4X, 4,000MB/s for 8X, and 8,000MB/s for 16X.

youre fine @ x4

both of my 1210 are @ x4 on P35 but just 2x raptor

for 4x drives the x8 is preferred since the card was designed for x8 interface

just like sata vs sataII faster interface is always better even if the bandwidth of the device doesnt take full advantage

Did a run with one copy of the Matrix Reloaded...1 min 4 secs...default clocks and lousy CPU usage (25% at most). Tried to do 2 at once, and both were flying at about the same rate as the first when both choked and DVDShrink crashed saying there wasn't enough memory:rolleyes:

16GB of memory and a 32 GB swap file, and there's not enough...riiiiiiight. I hate Vista. I think when I move to Velociraptors, I will definitely be going back to XP x64...

When both DVDShrinks were running I was still only seeing about 50% usage at most.

100 / 8 = 12.5 x 3 = 37.5&#37; @ 1x dvdshrink
37.5 x 2 = 75% @ 2x dvdshrink

vista sure does handle dvdshrink differently than xp

see if u can set more than 2 processor affinity @ task manager under processes tab for dvdshrink

though if i compare my 2min27sec @ 4.2GHz (3cores) vs your 1min4sec @ 3.2GHz (2cores) most of the work was still done by the storage system/s

every single main movie to DVD-5 result.. all dual/quad-core results ive posted in the thread here were done by deep analysis+encoding @ dvdshrink.. advanced analysis+encoding @ nero

before each dvdshrink run ive deleted any analysis results files here, always
