WR SuperPi 1M and Pifast using Chilled AIR ?????

Could these scores be both a WR using a Chilled AIR cooled CPU ?
Checked already a lot of Threads here and up till now I was not able to find a Superpi or a Pifast score higher/better than this one.

Specs :
CPU : Core 2 Duo E6600 Retail (L628B123) :D
Cooling : Chilled Air with a Thermal Take Big Typhoon
Mainboard : Asus P5B Deluxe WiFi (Unmodded), Bios 0614
Memory : Corsair Twin2X 512 MB PC6400C5 rev. 1.1
VGA : MSI 7900GTO @ 760/885 (no mods and org. bios) :D

Cpu speed @ 4266 MHz (9 x 474 MHZ), Voltage : 1,67 V bios = 1,6 V in Windows using Asus Probe.

Temps : 30 gr Idle and max. 60 gr Load

Pifast :
Cpu speed @ 4155 MHz (8 x 519 MHz), Voltage : 1,65 V bios = 1,58 V in Windows using Asus Probe.

I have done nothing in Windows itself to optimize the score for Superpi or Pifast.
But before running Superpi 1M, I always do the following steps.

Start Superpi.
Before running Superpi 1M, press Ctrl+Alt+Del and go to processes, select Super_pi_mod.
Press right mouse button and go to affinity.
Deselect one of the cores (leave the best core selected) and press on OK.
Than start Superpi, this way it could be possible that you can run Superpi at a higher cpu speed, which can result in a better score.

This is not always the case, so I can not guarantee this.

In my experience... if baseline is 25C... then 10C will get you about 125mHz increase and 0C will make about 200mHz more...

-40C and around there... that's uncharted territory. It was -60C in Western Siberia last year...

I have to wait for mother nature to provide my cold air and this global warming is playing havoc with my overclocking plans.

I'll see if I can beat your score this weekend, however i have just moved to an nvidia 680i board and reports indicate that they are slow for Superpi so I might be lucky to get below 12s I think. Should be better for 3d.

BigTyphoon is the suckiest cooler for subzero temps like all heatpipe coolers are..
I tried my Opt 146 last winter with -10'C ambient temp, liquid in pipes frozed = CPU temps around +50'C :fact:
Best temp for TT BigTyphoon is -2'C..

Best cooler (no heatpipes) for real low subzero ambient temp is ZM7700 with 120mm Delta EHE :slapass: ;)

Indeed, the Big Typhoon (all heatpipes coolers for that matters) are not the best coolers for subzero temps.
I'am busy with creating a home made cooler from aluminium.
Hopefully that will work for subzero temps. :D :)

The hot side of a pelt will easily reach 80C-100C, resulting in heatsink temps similarly high...cooling the heatsink off by even 40C would result in great temps. I think what you're TRYING to justify is the fact that TEC's don't gain efficiency at very low temps on the "hot side". But with the inherant inefficiency of a air cooled heatsink on the hotside this would be no concern. I doubt even with -40C ambient that the hot side of pelt would EVER be below 20C.

Ah okay, I'm finally see what you want to know, I thought you wanted to know if it would be better to use a TEC with extreme aircooling.

Well, while xtreme air + high-end TEC might not work, it could be possible that a low-end TEC's combo might result in better CPU temps. Remember that Italian dude with his extreme TEC chiller :)

Hi,

It was a tuniq tower with 200cfm 170mm fan blowing on it. Ambient was 4C and that is just air in my shed. Asusprobe reported the cpu temp at only 35C at 1.65v.

Now I have gone to 680i chipset so might have problems replicating that feat, however I got it as I mainly do nvidia 3d benching. I was messing around with it last night and could do 3dmark2001 at 4100 but when I tried to boot at 4300Mhz it would not. I think that if I could use clockgen when available or could get ntune to work properly I might be in with a chance however 680i seems to be getting a reputation of being slow for Superpi, at least with the current BIOS. I did do a 12.5 last night at 4100, not sure how that compares though as I am no way a Superpi master at all. My feeling is though it should have been about 12.2-12.3.

I think it may be a long time before I see the right side of 12s again, however it is still getting colder and I do have 1.8v to play with now for cpu ( 1.75v including droop ).

Good luck with your new cooler and future runs, post them up so we can see if you can crack 11.5 :toast:

I agree Charlie, I think a TEC will work quite well with very cold air and these new large area heatsinks. In the old days the heat capacity of the heatsinks was not enough for the cpu + tec and also heat used to soak back through, however I did some testing with a BT a while ago in ambients of about 7C and it did manage to hold the Peltier on it's own at about -10C. However no Cpu was involved in that test so I think the ambients would have to be a lot lower, say -10C and lots of cfm applied.

I still don't understand how heatpipe heatsinks do not work well in cold weather. The temp mentioned by Dani was -10C but if the cpu is running at 50C then the heatpipes will be well over 0C . The liquid in them is a type of oil isn't it ? If that is the case then oil should not freeze at all. maybe it gets very sluggish but if that is the case then the cpu should heat up and so should the liquid so acting as feedback. Puzzling:confused:

I'm hoping to get to find out myself but it rarely gets as cold as -10C in the SE of England. Damn the Gulf Stream!

From what I've red before, it was more like that there was a gas inside working on the principle of phase change cooling. Heat-up at the base -> evaporate -> coold down due to the cooled heatsink -> forced flow back to the base. This mini phase change thingy is designed for 20°C ambient temperatures (a bit more or less, you know what I mean). Still I don't know why it doesn't function anymore at low temps. When the heatpipe fails the base will get hot. Since the heatpipe is vastend to the base it should follow to heat up. At a certain point you will see that there is no temp gain, although ambient temp might be 10°C lower. Maybe the heat pipe's mixture was frozen and it needs some time to work properly again.

Considering the air cooled TEC, what was the TEC's Qmax?

I have tested shortly my CPU with standard AIR (room temps where 21 degrees) and I was able to get around 4152-4164 MHZ with a time of 12.208 sec (don't know it exactly anymore).

Tommorow I will try to get as high as I can with Orthos and on standard AIR.

I must say that 4230MHZ with only approx. 1,5V real is very impressive.
If you can manage to bench a few time @ the same speed (4230MHZ) I know for certain that you wil get 11,xxx sec.

I have tested also the 1066 Bootstrap with the Asus P5B Deluxe WiFi, but I can not go further that a FSB of 460-465 MHZ.
So for me it is not faster.

In the meantime I have a Superpi score which is better (11,844 sec.). I have a picture of it, but it is not complete, only the superpi score is in it. After that I wanted to make a picture with CPU-Z and CLockgen etc and the system rebooted. But I will manage this week hopefully to get another go for a faster time than 11,891 sec.

The home made cooler is not finnished yet, so I have to try it with the Termal Take Big Typhoon

-scores - got some other mobo (P5B Deluxe) .. well it`s 583MHz on air easy so far (old result was mobo-limited)... waiting it to get -5C here - then 100% OC on air, maybe :D

This morning about 09:00 hours I have tried to break my own record (11,891 sec.)
The temp. outside were about 8-9 degrees.
System is still the same, with no mods on mainboard (P5B Deluxe WiFi)

Cpu speed @ 4284 MHz (9 x 476 MHZ), Voltage : 1,6875 V bios = 1,62 V in Windows using Asus Probe.
Cooling : Chilled Air with a Thermal Take Big Typhoon (fan replaced with a 190 CFM fan). :D
Memory @ 952 MHZ (4-3-3-8-3), 2,45 Volt
Temps : 28 gr Idle and max. 61 gr Load

Superpi score of 11,829 sec. :banana:

I will try to get a score of 11,7xx, that is mine goal with the Thermal Take Big Typhoon.

Did you use also the TT Big Typhoon in the closed case ?
What was your time with superpi or pifast?

I believe that if you can manage to go to 4200-4250 Mhz, you should be able to outperform me. :(

Yes, TT BigTyphoon.
1M was slightly below 13s, but I did no tweaks and ran with relaxed mem timings ...

About 4250MHz - will see :)

Cpu speed @ 4298 MHz (8 x 537 MHZ), Voltage : 1,67 V bios = 1,6 V in Windows using Asus Probe.
Memory @ 1074 MHZ (4-4-4-8-4), @2,64 Volt (Using a Maximizer, Thanks Rol-Co ;) )
Temps : 22 gr Idle and max. 52 gr Load
Score : 11,766 sec :D

Sorry, I'am not able to test the 32m Superpi.
My mainboard has died and is now send for RMA.

I'am hoping to change him for an Asus Commando :D .
Then we can start benching again :slobber:

Sorry to hear about your board mate, just as it's getting really cold too. :(

Commando will do very well for 1m, but for 32m it might be tricky to get the times of a 975 board... would need massive memory speed. But you have the gift for tweaking so we shall see :D

Lets see how it handles.
This weekend I will try to improve my own superpi 1m time.

The weather over here is not that cold anymore, last week it was very cold (-4 till -6 degrees).
But still, I should be able to get a better score with the Commando than 11,766 sec done with the P5B Deluxe WiFi. We will see.
I will also try to get a good score for a 32m superpi run.
But that will be difficult I think, 32m is some kind of art, but I will try off course:).
