I have a small request, though... We know, that 680i mainboards take advantage of separate PLLs for FSB and RAM, allowing for memory being overclocked independently from FSB - you can choose to go with either ratios (linked mode) or straight key-in of desired memory clocks. Can you show us, how big of an advantage that gives to 680i? For instance, 333x11 but RAM @ DDR2-1200 4-4-4-4.0, if your memory will allow for it?

That was just an example Coolaler. What bachus_anonym (and me too :D ) would like to know is how much of an advantage it is for the 680i chipset to have separate PLLs for RAM and FSB, compared to Intel's chipsets which don't?

This is kindof what i would expect after reading Xbitlabs test of 680i yesterday. 975X is still best unless you REALLY need SLI. When looking at those 8800GTX benchmarks one have to wonder how important multi GPU is going to be with Vista and DX10.

Altought we can choose the frequency of fsb and memory independently, stability is not enough.
at this moment, the compatibility of this board isnt good enough.

27's... thats not what i was expecting as a nb only effect.



nvidia must have some serious latencies to have to be able to run sli on that nb. the allocation of data from either card the nb having to work harder i guess would be that factor.. but

As it stand right now, all clocks and timings the same, 975>965>680i in 32M. But when the general fsb overclock shakes out the I'm sure the order will be reversed. In a month how many guys will be running 500fsb 1:1 on 680i verses the 965 crowd? :confused:

I really appreciate your tests Coolaler but is it not a drastic conclution to say that Intels 965 chipset is better than NVIDIAs 680i based on some SPi tests (even if you only consider single graphics). I am not "playing" SPi when gaming so is that relly your bottom line impression from an overall point of view when judging the 680i vs 965/975 chipsets. You mention the 680i is immature with respect to unlinked fsb and mem (which might be expected), is it otherwise a solid chipset or is it your general impression that the 680i is flacky when overclocking?

I'm sure this is due to the fact that the P5B has got a several BIOS-revisions, that have removed virtually all the bugs, and makes it perform on it's max. The 680 will prolly catch up to it shortly.

What's a max fsb, that you can set, and the winxp is bootable?

What i wanted to see sometime ago. I wont change my 975x board then. I guess we'll have to wait for 985x ( or whatever they call it, bearlake i mean ) for better chipsets ( i have no faith on RD600 seeing this 680i :( )

Coolaler simply showed that with these preliminary tests, 965 is faster than 680i in SPi 1M and 32M on 2k3 at the frequencies and timings he showed...thats it thats all. nothing more nothing less.

he posted SPi results and said 965 is better than 680i...put it into context and don't let your self think its more than its not...end of story.

An asynchronous fsb is favorable for overclocking though isnt it??

Not really, you want 1:1, but with intel you always have a CPU (ok most of the time) that goes faster than the RAM.

Asynchronous is more a necessary evil I guess.

I see your point (at least from the way you understand it :) My point was actually that we should not put too much emphasis on these results and not just judge the 680i chipset based on this. That was what I was trying to ask him to clarify. However, It is a very interesting comparison. So bottom line we agree.

no one is making an overall judgement on the chipset based on SPi results, we are making a SPi performance judgement based on SPi results. wrap your head aorund it. for some of us that bench SPi, this IS all that matters.

yes,Dani's right.Let's say one has a x6800 and a SS cooling and RAM overclocked to 550mhz.Of course,the 975 chipset
won't allow that high fsb and it also has problems with ram dividers.Although 975 chipset appears to be 0.23% faster in coolaler's test,the 965 would make the whole system quite alot faster because of the higher overclockability.(if you have an expensive ram you may want stretch it to the max.).That is if you aircool the NB,otherwise the 975 is still the king (ie on a DICE -cooled NB,hehe)

965 @ 1066 strap +500FSB 1:1 is fast as heck ;)

Have you plan to do some tests at higher fsb? (over 400 MHz)

With the same settings, the results are fairly close.

I would be interested to see how they differ in terms of: overclockability, stability, memory support(with all four filled), and component temps(nbridge, voltage regs etc.) while OC'd.

Hey coolaler, once again thanks for your testing. I know it's alot of work but if you have time you should check some different fsb's and play with timings a bit. unless you already have of course. ;)

@3.60GHz with DDR2-800/3-3-3, 32M barely makes it into 15mins. 975X gets me 13 mins 40 secs. Think that's bad? Think again. :) Dual 32M takes nearly 20 mins!! (vs under 16 mins with 975X) Now, 1T improves the results somewhat but it's still not enough and more than anything I can only run up to 8M with 1T. I think it's either the ammount of RAM used or the number instances affect memory management in current BIOS. But not sure.

Funny thing is in every other test it either equals or beats 975X. Everest (except latency), PCMark, Sciencemark, and so on. I'm liking this board overall and replacing my P5W-DH with it. SP results are horrendous but like someone said I don't *play* SP and I'm sure there will be BIOS update in near future.

You forgot to mention RD600 - not released yet but chances are hi it will do better than 975 in SuperPi & better than 965 in hi FSB...........:p:

I can't await to see how the undependent mem frequency works. This must be a grand slam - no need for dividers and multi is only required for the FSB setting.

Although the kentsfield clock pulse of the very obvious N680 is is higher but compress completion time longer
