Another void warranty..... - lapping action done !!!

I decided to take a closer look to the IHS contact and found this

Not what I would call a fine contact - so took this CPU

Nice shiny surface you have there. I'd never have the guts to do that to my CPU.

Are those the temps before or after the lap?

It's not a big a deal as you think, lapping is more safe than it is dangerous. Yeah, it voids the warrenty; but, you have to weigh that against the benefits, especially if the IHS is "out of flat" anyway. The IHS is thicker than you're probably thinking, and you're not really removing that much material from it.

I have to hit my 6600 with 1.55v to get 3.3Ghz out of it. but, on water cooling it runs in the mid 40s 24/7 stable.

i dropped approx 5C off load temps after lapping it's now holding at 60C at 3.6GHz with 1.43V - aircooled with a TuniqTower120 :)

My Un-lapped, un-touched E6600, does 3924 Mhz, @ 1.62 Real vCore, Under water, with 64C Load temps.. Ambient around 22C...
Not 24/7 ofcourse..

24/7 is 1.46 Real vCore, @ 3590 mhz.. 47C Load @ 28-30 Ambient..:D.. (Mumbai is hot) -.-..

Thats a nice job/finish on that cpu. Was debating the other day to lap my cpu but don't want to void the warranty.

my IHS was quite concave, and had bad contact, i just *had* to lap it :p:

From my experience, cpu manf. wont RMA your broken chip if its due to overvoltage, and CPUs never break themselves, so they could just have like no warranty at all and it'd still be good. :cool:

Damn nice temps. My untouched 6600 is only running 3.1 with 1.31v set on bios and my load temps is at 55C running Orthos Small FFTs'... Guess the Big water SE is not enough for this... I should really turn on my ghetto chiller:stick:

Nice work there :eek: how did you manage to get the glossy finish with only a 1000 grade? used TIM? :confused: can post a close up pic of the cpu :D

The main reason it looks good is I took my time. I used a decent sized mirror and masking tape to secure the sandpaper. A bit of water helped it along.

I tried to only lapp it in an up and down motion, rotating 90* or 180* every 20 strokes or so. Each grade of sand paper (600, 800, 1000) took about 10 - 15 minutes I'd guess.

Once I was done I cleaned with rubbing alcohol and then rubbed it for a little with a microfibre cloth. The 1000 grade did most of the shining, as I could see my reflection before I had even cleaned.

In this image you can see a little bit of scratching, but I am pleased with the result:

i checked load temps (30 mins orthos small ffts priority 9) @ 3.6GHz 1.4375V using coretemp, just before and after applying
with AS5 i was loading at 59-60C
now with the liquid metal it's at 56C and not moving :clap: - good stuff :)
