Got my Kentsfield QX6700 B3 ES! Time to Overclock!! UPDATED!!

Hello...

I received a Kentsfield QX6700 B3 ES today and threw it in for a few quick tests...

I set the Vcore to 1.55v and ran four instances of Prime 95

I was able to boot into windows at 3.75Ghz but is was not stable enough to run any CPU intensive tests....

I ended up at 3.51 Ghz and it continues to run now...:banana:

Idle temps between 48-55C depending on core...100% load on all cores temps between 77-84C

I have attached a screen shot....I am going to try some more benches later tonight and tomorrow...

UPDATE: Quad Prime still going after 2 hours!

That seems crazy hot to me 70c under load? Thats like worst then old P4s did.

The vcore being set to a 1.55 voltage would probably explain the temperature under load.

Remember, there are FOUR heat sources under that IHS. Each of them producing about 65 watts of heat. Thats esencially the same amount of heat that FOUR stock e6600's produce. Thats alot of heat. They're going to be hot.

It's actually 130 watts not 260. It's two conroe's glued together so it's 65*2 = 130 watt. And your temps are high!

I agree temps are high...going to try to back down the voltage and see if I can mainatin the current overclock stability...

heat is not too far out of line... I pull ~66-70 with each of my cores under 4 x sp2004 with water... if they are stable then let them fly

1.35-1.4v should be enough for 3.5ghz

Bring that rig over to XS WCG and put it in 100% use and then you will know if it is stable. Pi$$ on prime95 and all that other crap. Real world is what you will use every day and WCG will push it to the max.

Update: I stopped the prime 95 after 8 hours.....and ran a 1M Super Pi......and it would not run it....made it about half way through then gave me an error..Ran multiple instances of 3dmark05 and 06 with no problem...hmmm....will play with it some more after work..

yep all the B3 are great overclockers, i try with my b3 and 3.6g is possible with a "normal" vcore.
its can run 1 super pi at almost 3.8gb on air, the B3 are amazing.

Quick question?? Does your B3 have a large span in temperatures between cores 1 and 2 and 3 and 4??? For example...My cores 1 and 2 are about 6-7C higher in temps than cores 3 and 4..

Now that i think about it, guess thats not "to bad" considering its 4 cores next to each other and the size they are. I wonder what happens if one core fails do the rest fail? :D

just out of curiosity the cores have the metal above them (forgot the exact word) if u take it out u reveal the cores themselves for extreme ocing it should be better with straight cooling over the cores.

no metal cover. or that CPU companies should start developing better solutions like single metal cover per core ?

the one metal cover over a lot of cores ain't exactly optimal.

The temp is actually good, considering VCore was at 1.55v. Kentsfield runs hotter than Conroe, which is to be expected given the number of cores.

Not the most reliable source. But the dates mentioned seem logical. Kentsfield ES chips have been around for several months now.

Intel has already begun revenue shipments of Kentsfield and Clovertown processors. That's a good indication it won't be much longer. They are also on record as saying they will launch this quarter. January would be next quarter.

It's basically an open secret that the launch is mid-Nov.

Hrm... This is what I got a month or two ago with my B0 and P5WDG2 WS Pro. I am not sure of what speed my RAMs ran though.

Hmmm...I agree My CPU score is pretty low...I wonder if I am getting any thermal throttling?? I will try the 3DMark06 CPU test by itself when I get home this PM..I do not think 200 mhz would cause that large of a discrepancy?

His @ 3.6ghz was already 5.4k for cpu score.. :)
Amazingly these B3's bench very well..

But for our normal daily game/usage...
they dun seem to run any faster(for me at least)...

I have tried everything to get the CPU scores up...can you do a run of 3dmark06 CPU tests at 3.5Ghz and see what you get...I get around 4500-4700...when I see you and others way over 5000...I wonder what is wrong with my setup...Maybe I need to do a fresh OS install..?

Also...what is your Cinebench 9.5 time for the multi-thread test? I get 12 seconds...

3DMark06 CPU score fixed!!

Ok...My scores for the 3DMark06 CPU test now seem much more in line with what everybody else is getting....All that changes was I loaded the new Catalyst 6.10 drivers....I even lowered my clock speed to 3.46Ghz

Hmmm...not sure why that worked but it seems like it did....See picture....

Actually I cannot wait to sell off these x1900xtx's in crossfire...I have two new 8800GTX's coming next week!!! That should be fun!!:banana:
