Biostar 965PT PIC's and test results

well this arrived today.
first thing to say is anyone with a DS3 will find this board eerily similar.

sorry i dont have alot of time right now as im on lunch break so i snapped a few shots.

testing will start tonight and last allll weekend long :)

Build date of the mobo is 0637. so thats 2006 week 37 which is Mid Sept. so i highly doubt its a C2 board especially since its a Rev 1.0

just pulled the NB heatsink off.
omg! ive never seen so much Paste used on anything in my life.

not only that there is some sort of oil or liquid around the chip.. if i had started it up like that it would have just gotten hotter than hell itself.
the twinkle star chipset cooler does not fit. the CAP's are in the way.

i dont know how to tell if its a C2 but the numbers on the chip are

google pulls some japanese sites that look like its calling it a C1 but cant tell for sure

CAN ANYONE LEND A HAND ON THOSE NUMBERS ?

not sure why but i can only do this when setting the ram to 800mhz 2:3 and then overclock from there.
2.2v 5-5-5- will try tighter later but right now im trying for max 2.2v since thats all the bios can do.

it also has the 3.1v jumper for vdimm so we are now going to be ok to use a POT on that for the vdimm mod posted for the Deluxe version

looks like the exact same board, should be the same volt mods too as the DS3 mods me and shamino found...

no it may look alot like the DS3 but the ic's and pwm and other hardware(s) are not the same or located in the same place. the mods are not the same location as the DS3.



so far, with the 15 minnutes i had with it. the jumper is there to increase the vdimm so you can use the POT to increase the vdimm.

so y does it say deluxe under the pt stick r they all really the deluxe version or the same board with just a few different things

i guess so.. so it makes it a nice deal.

they would disable certain parts of the SB so its the ICH8 instead of the ICH8R

they removed 2 sata ports. not sure what else is removed but as far as i know all thats different is the Dlx uses the ICH8R and has 2 extra sata ports.

other than that the guys in Malaysia tell me they are the same boards and clock the same too.

thats why i said i MIGHT flash it with the Dlx bios to see what happens.

once i get the board running i may pull off the SB heatsink and see what it says the SB is.. :) if its the ICH8R hell yes..

but right now the 965PT is just a relabelled Dlx. with 2 ports missing.

for $104 bucks jesus what a bargain!

nah the screening on the NB die is VERY small and VERY hard to read, i had to stand in front of the window with a magnifying glass.

i listed aLL the numbers on the NB please read above...

the SL9NU i THINK is just a C1 chipset.
if thats true its pretty crappy for them to sell it here when they should be a C2... but then again

the reason the sticker is there is because they use the same pcb for the deluxe as they do for non deluxe....

Same as how asus uses the same PCB for P5B deluxe and p5b-e Plus, yet they are very different boards, i would be careful with a bios flash.

yeah i have no intensions on flashing it unless i can get some more insite on the real hardcore differences..

This board has come into the market at the end of September in China, which has proved to be based on C2 rev.

It is said someone found some problems of compatibility on D9GCT with this board, but not confirmed

well so far,, temps and voltages reading them on the mobo with a dmm vs what the bios said are spot on voltages are within 0.01 +/-
temps,, are damn close and im using my infrared temp gun and shooting the base of my XP-120

havent thrown the conroe in yet as i wanted to just get it running with my cellie,, id rather have a $45 cellie go up insmoke than a $500 6600 ES

bios wise,, its brand new bro,,, the bios is there on the website as the initial release. its a brand new board bro so give them time.
you dont need any drivers as its all standard stuff you can download, plus ther eis a cd with it.
the manual i havent even looked at but its fairly thick.
bios wise.. the bios chip has the 913 bios sticker on it and over the top of that is the sticker for the 914.
so far its handling the Cellie at 3.8ghz very nicely but i havent even begun to do any overclocking.

the bios definately has more options than the DS3..
(g)mch is 1.2-1.55v
FSB term is 1.2 to 1.5v
vdimm is 1.8, 2.0 2.1 2.2 but reading the vdimm on the mobo with a dmm its reading 1.88v
then there is the 2.2v vdimm jumper also.
but why no 1.9v ? who knows.

so far, and this is just preliminary results from memtest and playing around outside of windows,,, she seems damn good.

more results coming...

onboard cpu fan control is fooked,,, no sure why

loading windows now so i'll know soon more about everything

well so far is not so good....

board is VERY tempermental and it does NOT like the gskill 6400 HZ's.
so.. another baord that doesnt like the micron D9

since the bios only shows dram as 533 667 or 800 i cant really tell what the ram speed is until i get into windows,, if i can.

overclocking utility is a HUGE pile of crap,, absolutely worthless

this makes overclocking impossible as the 6600's wont let me max out the FSB

well i got tired of the fact that this board wouldnt OC for sh|t for me,,, sure 400x9 would go but the system would lock all over the place even locked in the bios.

so... by ACCIDENT i flashed to the Deluxe bios..

using the integrated flasher i didnt see it was reading my floppy and i hit enter to see if the screen would change,, ok well then it starts loading the Deluxe bios as that was the first one it saw on the floppy.. the 965PT bios was second.. ok.. so it flashed it..

rebooted..

100% ok......

(g)MCH is now up to 1.8v!!!
havent tested yet if its truly 1.8v

only thing different is PWM slope for CPU fan and SAT = IDE or AHCI or RAID

cpu-Z now does not see the board as a 965P Deluxe it is just a Biostar...
NOT ICH8R still ICH8

412x9 1.4v booted right up... no problems yet..
so.. let see how the D9 reacts

The deluxe version should be available early November in mass in the USA.

ok new update.

been playing around with FSB vs Dram Divider.

using 800mhz Dram Freq which is 2:3 i am able to run 1000mhz 5-5-5-15 @ 2.2v but only if i set the 2.2v jumper. otherwise the vdimm is like 2.17v.

im also 32m Priming right now at 333x9 @ 2:3 so thats 3ghz w/ 1000mhz 5-5-5-15.

so far so good about 1/3 the way done.

so sure why or what or how... but having to run the 2:3 divider literally destroys my overclocking as im stuck at some very low overclocks..

My TforceP965 just died on me. Resetted the system and no display. LED 1 on , LED 2 off. Tried my gfx on my ds3 and it works. Resetting bios doesnt seem to work. Dead PCI-E slot?

now its in my main rig with the water on it.
i did the vdimm mod. vdimm is set to 2.4v.
bios is set to 4-4-4- but since there is the cas3 bug cpu-z says 3-4-4
i have to use memset965 and change Cas to Cas 4 and apply then CPU-Z will see 4-4-4

i wont gain anything but using Stilt's bios.
and the pci is locked at 33mhz so there really isnt a need for the auto detect pci.

other than that, a modded bios just to reveal and set defaults to a few things but nothing major.
i havent seen anyone say its improved their clocks or anything.
but then again, its new.. :\

any mod on the voltages part

only one i am aware of is the vdimm mod.

look at the 965 Dlx thread its the easiest mod in the world.

CHECK THE VOLTAGES BEFORE POWER ON YOUR MOBO! and do NOT have your ram inserted into the mobo... doing so could fry the ram as the ram is actually being fed voltage.

also, you MUST remove your video card to add or remove the ram!
god damn biostar,, thats .... thats just inexcusable....
unless you have a short video card then your ok.

with the psu in the ON position, the vdimm is being fed the voltages you do NOT need to turn on your pc.. just install the mod, make sure the psu switch is on. and measure the vdimm. since the jumper is on 2&3 it should read 2.2v then start turning the POT,, it will move slowly then BAM it will jump very fast.
so once you see it start moving go very slowly it only takes a little bit to adjust the voltages.

also if you flash the PT with the Dlx bios your gmch voltages now go up to 1.8v but you had better have a 40mm fan on that northbridge or your gunna start it on fire...
all it takes is a 40mm fan and she will stay nice and cool.


well guys i dont know what it is about the 5:4 divider but the system refuses to boot when the ram is less than 400mhz. thats only 800mhz or less. on a 5:4 divider. it wont even boot at 360 dram @ 5:4 which is 720mhz.

i guess i dont understand what the deal is but at 1:1 and 2:3 she will go as far as you need.


also i was mistaken the pci lock does NOT work according to Clockgen.
if you try and move the pci-e freq. the pci also increases.
this is even when you lock the pci-e in the bios at 100

so,, not sure exactly what biostar is thinking but thats naughty,, lol.

so i guess Stilt's auto detect pci freq in his modded bios will infact come in handy.
i will flash it in a while and try it out.

wislon if you notice i have a 6600 ES and for some stupid reason biostar didnt add hte cpu multi even for ES chips.

so how in the world can i drop my multi if i cant do it in the bios ?
what program will let me do that.
i've never needed a windows program since ever board i have had so far has the multi's open for the ES conroes ..


if i can drop it to 8 or 7 then im quite sure ill be able to go to town

Note that I'm running a 6400, but have a 7x multiplier..

Crystal CPUID changes the multiplier.... Google for it....

if your referring to the Gcpuid that is found when using core temp that doesnt do anything for ME
it says my Min Multi is 9 and my max is 9.

so,,, not sure what the deal is..

funny thing is if i open TAT, is says there was an error something about the realtime clock generator or something like that. and my cpu multi instantly drops to 6x.

then running gcpuid all i get is min6 max 9...

And it does work on the Biostar (atleast on mine too)

The option that you can use for multiplier management is "Intel Enhanced SpeedStep Control" in the Function menu

And then, you can do stuff like this if you're a bit lucky with your board.

yeah it lets me set it to 8x or whatever but the system keeps locking if i try and use clockgen,, i can get to a little under 460 and when i open Pi even before i set the 1m run the system hardlocks.

dont have the energy to mess with it any more.

Holy :banana::banana::banana::banana:, you weren't joking...this board looks just like the DS3, and from what I read, is just as headache inducing.

well i'll tell ya thunder my DS3 maybe one of the few that is a real killer.

if it wasnt for the fact that it hates D9 ram, no matter what divider,, it would be the best.

im too tired to swap back to my DS3 but thats what i will be doing later after a nap.

the 965PT is the flakiest and wierdest board i've ever seen.
but it can run 1050mhz @ 2.35v @ 5-5-5-15. but ONLY on a 2:3 divider.

gigabyte has alot of bugs to work out with the board if they want people to buy it for a clocking board. and when using the actual 965pt bios.. its worse.... the Deluxe bios helps it out a bit.. but not enough to make me keep it.
its going back to newegg. they can do whatever they want with it.

im not happy with the product, there isnt anything physically wrong or functionally wrong,,,,, at stock... so i am returning it.
same thing you do with something at a store,, if your not happy with the product,, if it doesnt suit your needs you return it.

i am first going to post it for sale here for the weekend. but if someone doesnt want it by monday then off to its origin it goes.

biostar isnt going to fix any of the issues.

and my killer DS3 is going up too.. along with my gskill.....

oh yeah i forgot,, in the beginning of this thread i mentioned when i removed the NB heatsink i was literally crapping myself at the ammount of thermal grease i saw..

here it is. ther eis alot more there than the picture shows

man...stop buying "budget boards" and get yourself a P5B DX

At least BioStar uses thermal paste, unlike the thermal "concrete" pads Asus uses, even for their 260$ boards..

The results you got were the worst I have seen so far.
But then again most people use a 6300 or 6400 with the board.
I have the same ram you have and I am gonna give the board a try in the near future.

yes it is nice to see thermal paste but extreme rediculous they use so much. they really need to train their people on the production line.

and yes most people have used a 6300 or 6400 but the guys with the Dlx board show very high clocks with a 6600.
what i dont get is the whole divider/ram issue and why using the 5:4 divider absolutely kills the overclock.
it wont even overclock to 340fsb stable. totally wacko.
but it will boot at 440x9 O_o... wiierrrrrrrrrdddd......
and the fact that the 2:3 divider can run the ram at 1050... even more odd ..

times like this it makes me with i had a 6300 lol..

but if they had the cpu multi option there maybe things could have been different.
but... its all water under the bridge now..
the board is for sale until monday at which time newegg is getting it back and im getting my money back.

and my next statement, can be argued from here to kingdom come ..

i have enjoyed my DS3 more than any other board. it has had and still has its issues.
but i have yet to see any of the boards above this do any better than my $145 baord can without mods.
even the Abit AW9 Pro.. i can still boot at 422x9... and go a helluva lot higher in windows.
x8 and x7 i am ram limited. i have proven this time and time again.
i wish i could get som eram that does work at 1000+ on this board cuz i know it could easily break 500x7 right now the baord will 1/2 post then lock.. and its locking on the ram.

so frankly im stupid for selling my DS3 but i dont care, its only hardware... i'll get more.
but i have yet to see any unmodded board beat my DS3 by such a large margin that it warrants me buying another,,, atleast untilt he RD600 and C55XE come along..

and yes i have thought heavily about getting a P5B Dlx.. but i see no reason to not yet atleast.

don't base 1 board on the whole lot,, i maybe got a bad board.
i find it VERY odd that its actually just a rebadged deluxe. one of the guys said its the same pcb board. oki can believe that but ther eis more too it.. its a deluxe its just crippled. remove 1 sata and program the NB to an ICH8 instead of the R version aside form that those two boards are 10000% identicle.
i maybe got a bad one,, maybe they had a crap load of bad chipsets or bad boards come thru that didnt qualify as a Deluxe so they badged them as the 965PT.. who knows. i think its a bad Dlx given the wacky way it acted.

i have a cobbled together setup with very low water flow.
1)
swiftech apogee
2)
all 1/2" OD hose from Home Depot
3)
swiftech MCW50 on the video card
4)
pump from a koolance Exos. its the dual pump/res style. it doesnt have very high water flow.
5)
black ice extreme 2 radiator with 4 120mm fans. 2x push 2x pull.

i have a high end swiftech pump but its 1/2 OD barbs. and its got high water flow, i need to change out all my hose and barbs to make it fit and i havent had the energy to deal with it right now.

if i can get that pump on there i would see temps drop more.

its an external. rad and pump are sitting ontop of my case.

and yes i have had this same pump/res for 2 years now and i even have a spare incase this takes a crap on me. along with the high end swiftech pump.
i have no regrets for my ghetto water,, it is way better than air and i love it.

I have a chance to test this board. Here is 3.6Ghz occt stability test. Vcore shows 1.5V in bios, 1.45 vmch, 8x450, TT BT. It came with 9/14 bios already. I will test max fsb later :) Cpu is week L630A448

push it more kiwi! I got mine 2 days ago but still playing with my ds3 which came 3 days ago,lol... I am tooo lazy to try it out - if possible can you check max system speed with 1.6vcore (at least 32m stable)?

i wish gigabyte would get off their arse and fix the bios to have cpu multi's along with god knows what else, and the fixes too.

with no cpu multi,, it makes overclocking a real bear with a 6600 or higher.

what bio are you using Kiwi? stil or 914?

I tried Stilt's modded bios but there is really no difference.

Unfortunately cpu has fsb wall at 487 on this board and 492 on p5b dlx (did 545 with another 6400). I am sure fsb would go higher on Tforce but cpu won't let me. Ofcourse extreme cooling helps to increase fsb wall by 20-50+ depending on cooling SS/DI/Ln2 :D

Overall the board is good for the price :)

But as Lestat has already mentioned, you must remove and reapply chipset thermal paste :)

its not a bad board and for $104 sheesh.. its a great deal but they have some big issues to work out on the board. big issues isn't the right word but they are issues none the less.
including the dreaded Micron D9 issue,, the same as the DS3.

kiwi did you have any issues with your ram ? meaning did you have to really loosen it up or extra voltage ?

yep, a lot of goop, and not only on chipset but around it too :slapass: :D

I tried only my cellschock 8000 (D9GMH or D9GKX) 1:1. They work fine at 2.2V and they are rated 1000 4-4-4-12 2.2v :)

What issues did you have with D9? I had some issues on ds3 but only above 505 or so. Also changing some subtimings did not change them

If I have time, I will test more RAM on this Tforce

my d9gkx can go up to 616fsb with 2:3 divider,stability wise i havent test..will try it soon

edited:my e6300 max up at 470fsb @ 1.34v,cant boot at 480fsb even vcore set to 1.5v,mch 1.8v,vfsb 1.5v

I went to the Chipset Waterblock from DangerDen when I realized the SB needed help.

Just got Biostar 965PT yesterday, without any modification :D , put it with E6300, cooling with Gigabyte G-Power Pro, Kingston KHX8500D2K2/1G, PSU TAGAN 800 Watt Dual Engine and......:banana: :banana: FSB 510 MHz from BIOS :D. The picture below shows some pi bench at FSB 510 MHz
