P5W64 WS Pro - Reference Guide

Just updated my p5WDH to the excellent P5W64 WS Pro and can not find much info on the board here in the forum. There seem to be odd bits here and there but no definative reference point.

The board seems a great deal more stable than the p5WDH. this seems to mainly be due to the ability to change more ram settings in the bios.

Board installs perfectly. Intel drivers for Raid and Chipset work straight from install. ATI have RC2 drivers that work very well. On Board sound works perfectly and Optial out works. latest clockgen and Core temp work. Need to download the latest Asusprob to get that working the boards CD version of ProbeII and Booster (Aibooster does not install on Vista).

3D2001 SE Crashes when using Crossfire for SimonMaltby - SOLVED - ATI Tool caused issue.

I am currently stable at 455 x 9 = 4095Mhz ram at 1:1 1.6v Bios and 1.8vMCH fully unmodded board.

Nice clock.

Clockgen crashed on me last night when I tried upping my FSB from 430 to 440.

That said, my PC wouldn't boot with 440 FSB when vMCH was set to 1.6v. I had to bump it up to 1.7v.

Mine couldn't do more than 380 fsb, might have a bad NB chip. Sending back to Newegg, undecided on whether to try a different board or just stick with my DS3 until I find something better. Seems a lot of people with 6700 and 6800 processors are having great results with this board. However I haven't seen much for "real world" systems doing much with the 6600 processor on this board without vmods and phase. By "real" systems I mean a 24/7 system with multiple SATA drives, 1 or 2 top end video cards, maybe an Xfi, and installed in a case with air or water cooling. Bench results are fine for showing hardware capability when comparing apples to apples, but they don't mean jack when seeing how a board performs in everyday usage. A 12 sec superpi doesn't mean much if your system crashes trying to open outlook.

After going back to my DS3 for a day or so I am starting to believe my FSB limitation is with the CPU itself, so I am not going to return the board after all. 380x9 with memory 4:5 is still pretty snappy :) and want to wait til I get another CPU to try on this board before I dismiss it. I had the impression that these Intel boards weren't CPU dependent on how much FSB they can run because of the architecture, but apparently the CPU is also quite important.

yeah, I ran an pair of eVGA 7900 GTO's in top slot blue-1 & farthest black slot for 8/8x in sli no problems.....:)

Anyone doing anything with the SB heatsink? (replacing with aftermarket, or just redoing TIM with AS5?)

Thinking about ditching my JingTing cooler that I have on mine as its just getting in the way when I'm trying to remove the battery, etc... plus the temperatures don't seem to be radically lower than if I just had the standard heatsink...

I am getting to grips with the board.

Is it better than the P5WDH? Well in some ways yes, in others i'm still not sure.

I have found that where the DH undervolts from that selected in the Bios the 64 Ws over volts until you get into the mid 1.6's. At 1.55v bios the board is actually recording 1.61 in windows... the DH would have reported 5.2ish. This would explain a lot of the increased stability of the WS and also why people see higher core temps.

I think the temperature readings are different to the DH because mine have certainly gone up on idle, but load seems much the same. The temp readings seem to always be a few degrees bellow Core Temp where as the DH was way behind.

I have now got Speed fan running with control for the cpu and chassis fans. It needs a manual change in the advanced settings to achieve this. I shall post a config file soon.

Clock Gen does seem to work, but only if the Pcie and Pci settings are turned off.

My one issue is with my favorite benchmark which is having none of Crossfire on this board. 3d2001se will not run, even at stock whith this board. All other 3d benchmarks and games run very well indeed.

SuperPi has been improved with the board. My best 1M with the DH was 12.7s i now get 12.3 with a slightly lower clock... the benifit is that the board will boot at 450 - 470fsb

Can anyone upload the 0022 BIOS? It's the only I know of allows you to set a multiplier greater than 12.

The recent ones I've tried (215 and 301) only go to 12.

He's talking about retail boards though :)

Anyone know why increasing fsb to over 1.4v my system would crash?

Using the maximum VFSB setting can cause instability on some Asus boards.

That's true, those threads are more geared toward the guys who are doing competitive benching, not those building a 24/7 home system.

Most benchers use retail boards. Some of them have their boards modded.

I bought my P5W64 from a reseller. It has not been modded. It does 460+ FSB.

True, I do a lot of benching with my unmodded retail board and use the stock chipset cooling (as5 added). While some threads may have been started by some people that may have used a hand picked board, most the posts are from people with retail boards. I think it was a good Idea to start a thread like this because a lot of good info is spread throughout many threads...this may help to consolidate important info on this board.

Actually, there are 40 threads here that have been started with P5W64 in the thread title. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...archid=2343331 It would be nice if anyone would repost here anything they felt was very important info that pertains to this board.

It would be nice if it was just a matter of copying someone else's bios settings. But overclocking involves a lot more than that. And you will see this same issue with just about every board. One guy can do 450FSB, while another can do only do 380FSB using the same board. I've used three different CPU's with some Conroe boards, and each processor maxed out at a different FSB speed. That of course tells me it's not just the board that determines maximum FSB.

I wish there were a simple answer. But there isn't.

The point I was making really is that us end-users generally don't have the luxury of being sent or having several sets of memory, several CPUs, several boards, etc to test on. Victor's P5W64 is clearly a pre-release board because it has 4 hooks for the NB whereas retail (68M0AG onwards) do not. I can only hazard a guess as to whether there is anything else different about it. The point is - people who don't know this is potentially pre-release/cherry-picked equipment are going to be disappointed if they think their 100% retail board/CPU/memory is going to get them anything like the same results.

The point is - not to take anything at all away from any of the Xtreme people on this board that have these industry contacts, but posting a thread saying "this is the best board ever" is misleading until other people who actually buy them from a shop can confirm it.

That's not to say they shouldn't do it obviously, but I can see the value in a thread like this where its actually people who've bought the board, CPU and memory from a regular shop/reseller are commenting on real-world performance, not performance with cherry picked memory, CPU and board....

I totally understand that, and I am not trying to invalidate any of the accomplishments of the high end benchers, just pointing out that their results don't translate automatically into the amount of potential my hardware has.

One big misconception I am just realizing is that I thought the board FSB capability was more or less independent of CPU, and mostly dependent on your luck on getting a good NB chip, cooling, and voltage. Hence most of the higher FSB coming from 6700 and 6800 users. If my chip had that much potential it probably would have been binned at 6700 or 6800 instead of 6600. I didn't have a lucky draw, guess I need to save up and try again ;) All a part of overclocking, guess I had mostly good luck of the draw on my 939 chips and forget that sometimes you get a lame duck (relatively speaking)

I'm in total agreement. While I appreciate all the hard work the 'top' clockers put into sourcing and then sometimes modding the latest equipment it can only serve as an indication of what the retail boards/cpu's will do. More often than not these products ARE cherry picked and while skill obviously plays an important part you can only go so far with inferior equipment. I always take a 'pinch of salt' when someone with pre-release equipment states that this is the next big thing as it is sometimes a poor comparison to retail products that the average Joe buys. I tend to purchase equipment based on reviews, comments and tests by users of retail produce rather than the 'next big thing'. However, this is XS and 'the next big thing' is usually first to be tested here so I don't think anyone has cause to complain. Variety of reviews can only be a good thing so hats off to those at lucky enough to be at the cutting edge of PC hardware:)

I did the pencil mod today. +0.1 to vMCH and +0.2 to vDIMM. It's as far as I can go w/ a No.2 pencil. I suck at soldering so I'm not gonna to solder on a VR.

My jingting dont have problem and been happy with it. just that i mount the cooler 90 degree of your current position ( away from the first VGA card )

I've got mine mounted that way now too, but with X1900 Crossfire I have to pull the heatpipe out quite far from the base just to clear the card PCB.

You can just about see what I mean from this pic.

With the heatsink in that position it makes it very hard to access the battery and SATA ports (which are already partially obstructed as it is :()

You can mount the jingting NB/SB cooler this way to avoid clearance issue.

What does EZ Plug molex connector do/help?
It's just near PSU connector...

Manual says it will help supply power to pcie if you only have 20 pin psu, if I remember right.

Seems so. I used it on the bench while putting it together, but when putting it a case I had already been using and had wires already tied down, I tried it without using it. Has been running completely solid for several days.

Does this motherboard have the same bizarre double post when you turn it on as the P5B Deluxe does?

If you aren't sure what I am talking about when OCing a P5B it takes two attempts to boot up. Also on restarts, it shuts down and then reboots again.

The board will temporarily shut down to set the strap. But it doesn't do it twice after an overclocked bios change, just once.

I totally agree with you. Too many people complaining that the boards,cpu's, and ram are cherry picked. I was tihnking the same thing until i started researching learning and spending more money.

Most people on here think they are going to buy the BEST motherboard, the best ram, and the BEST cpu in their first shot. you will have a better chance in hell freezing over before this happens :) . Trust me i know, i have spent alot of mula :) , and am finally seeing what people like Sierra are able to accomplish. If you don't believe me look at my sig :).

In the end it is about luck, skill,etc..

Well I believe that is exactly what I was speaking of. To clarify, I meant the computer from a cold boot starts up once and stops, and then has to start up again and on this try it successfully boots into Windows.

So it sounds like both boards do this hmm.

The p5b would shutdown-false start-then start. This does not do that, but it will shut all the way down and then restart. Recently this problem has been mostly fixed for p5b and p5wdh delux, so I would expect a bios in the not-too-distant future that fixes this for the ws pro as well.

My 5th P5W64 seems like a dud:(
It won't go pass 430 and cpu temp. alwayas relatively higher than previous boards.

Before booting into Windows the board/bios has to determine what strap to set. All Conroe boards do this, even the ones that don't temporarily shut off. I know it can't be good for your other hardware. But this is not really an issue if you keep your computer on 24/7.

quick question, this board has that 8 pin 12V connector and so does my power supply, its running fine with the 4 pin connector, should i use the 8 pin or just leave ve? any benefit to using 8 pin? thanks.

Don't think there's any way of being absolutely sure if theres any difference between 4 and 8-pin. My thinking with this is that if you have a PSU that had 8-pins you might as well use it... better safe than sorry! :)

I would agree with you, but it'll be a pain trying to take that black cover off without remounting my heatsink, which i've already done so many times it's sickening, too many mobo's, too many sticks of ram, too many different video cards, bleh!

FYI, Windows Vista build 5840 runs GREAT on my computer. Please don't ask me where to get this build;) Here's a list of programs that are compatible...I'm sure there's more not listed yet.

Have any of you got "hard lock" with this crazy mobo?
I have several times, only chance to get board live again is to pull all PSU connectors off, battery off and CMOS jumper to position 1 and wait 1-12h...
I hate when it do this, so :banana::banana::banana::banana:ing :banana::banana::banana::banana: :|

No problems here with the board.

My only gripe is the cold-reset.

With bios 0215, i could only do 3.6ghz DDR2-800. Can't do DDR2-1000+ with any tweaks.

But with bios 0303, i just did 3.6ghz DDR2-1000 5-5-5-15 1M Pass. Gonna tweak more soon. :D

I've decided to keep my P5W64 WS even though max FSB is 435 boot into windows, thats with 1.8MCH. Just want to know how many have the board that will boot 450+ or a semi dud like mine?

Mine came from NewEgg as it seems the better ones are coming from Ewiz.

mine boots and is stabil at 450.

i had the same problem with
the Gskill HZ's (2gb 5400)
Geil 6400 2gb kit
Ocz Special Ops 6400 2gb kit
OCZ Crossfire 6400 2gb kit

both with P5WDG2-WS Pro and W64....
with every available bios till now...

note that almost all the prementioned ram kits could hit ddr2 1000
with no particular tweaking, on 965 boards...

Bro i just passed 13hrs Orthos stable, 3.6ghz DDR2-1000 4-4-4-12. :D

But anything above DDR2-1000 even at CL5 still no go...

It sounds very strange ... I don't know about your and SlackerXL configurations because I never tried your memory kits, but I have the same configuration of johnpetrucci9 (p5w64+gskill hz) and for me it works well.
For this reason for me this don't looks like mobo/ram compatibility issue.

Now, in the following screenshot I am trying with vmem 2,35v, DDR2-1000 4-4-4-5 and tRD (Read Delay)=7, tRFC (Refresh Cycle Time)=42.

Which tweaks have you already used? If you don't try yet, I think you have to try to raise vmem and set tRD and tRFC with different values.

Generally speaking, I think that memory kits that are using chip micron D9 are able to work at DDR2-1000.

P.S.: I have already tried OCZ Crossfire 6400 2gb kit and they was not able to work at DDR2-1000, no way! At this frequency they was very instable!

It sounds very strange ... I don't know about your and SlackerXL configurations because I never tried your memory kits, but I have the same configuration of johnpetrucci9 (p5w64+gskill hz) and for me it works well.
For this reason for me this don't looks like mobo/ram compatibility issue.

Now, in the following screenshot I am trying with vmem 2,35v, DDR2-1000 4-4-4-5 and tRD (Read Delay)=7, tRFC (Refresh Cycle Time)=42.

Which tweaks have you already used? If you don't try yet, I think you have to try to raise vmem and set tRD and tRFC with different values.

unfortunately for now i'm stuck with the WS-Pro...
so no bios option for tRFC.. (memset is not an option for the everyday rig..)
Read delay was always set @7 on both boards...

i'm not suggesting memory incompatibility...
just that since the board won't run stable at manually set timmings (through bios)
and thus requires either spd settings or increased vdim & vmch,
i suspect that memory is forced to run tighter than it was supposed to...
resulting in limited o/c-ability...

i mean i see that i can boot @ddr1000
maybe do a couple of spi runs...
but thats it...
V2.4 is the max vdimm i got...
(although Hipro's maximizer now seems more usefull than ever)

Before my board died I managed this with 116 bios, tried 303 and couldn't even come close to that. Using 1gb of Patriot DDR2 8000XBL that has D9 micron. I've booted even higher using the shipping bios but never saved a screenie. Never did get a chance with my TeamXtreme 2gb 667 3-3-3 sticks.

Ah, don't know exactly. Went to reboot and never posted again. Some members said it was a hard lock so I cleared cmos several times, pulled battery and unplugged everything on the board and still refused to post. Tried for several days with no luck so back to Newegg it went. Hopefully I get a better one this time around as the last maxed out at 435fsb with 1.8MCH, hope to get on of those 450+.

Hell I liked the board some much I might not wait for the RMA one and just order another so I'll have 2.:banana:

Whats the best vFSB that i should set it to? I can't do 1.5 because then it will create system crash and all sort of problem

FSB max 1.4V, if 1.5V your MCH will not be the value you selected from BIOS

I upgraded from 0215 to 0304 and now the CPU went from an idle temperature of 40C to 55-60C!!!!!

I have a Floppy drive and a bootable USB drive, but I still can't rollback my BIOS. I have tried both AFUDOS and EZ-FLASH from both the USB boot (EZ FLASH recognizes the USB key), and from the floppy, but I get the message "this bios is older than that currently running" (or some variant of that message). I'm running Vista 5744 and the damn AsusUpdate software doesn't install. Does anyone know how I can rollback to 0215?

Also, I'm having this strange problem where on every single boot (cold or restart), after USB initialization and RAM count, there is a 20-45 second pause (variable) before the HDD, DVD, and USB devices are detected. This is crazy slow and hasn't been fixed by ANY Bios version. I have a Promise SuperTrac 8350EX in there, but I've even tried pulling out the card and I still get the delay. I'm running an Pioneer DVR111D and a WD Raptor 150 SATA.
Has anyone else run into this? HELP

To downgrade the bios version you could try with afudos ver. 2.07 (ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/flash/AFUDOS207.zip)
With this afudos version there is no control about bios version.

I have a similar configuration (with promise supertrack EX-8350) but I don't think that the problem could be the controller. If Raptor is linked to the ICH7R controller, I red (I forget were) about some incompatibility issues between WD Raptor 150 SATA and ICH7R controller. Try to disconnect the WD Raptor 150 and you see what happens. Repeat the same operation with DVD and USB devices until you will found the device responsible for this unusual delay.

Guys STAY CLEAR OF 0304 BIOS ITS CORRUPT. I Spent half a day getting things back to normal. Whilst rebooting my rig today...the mobo went cold. Tried to go back to previous bios and it wouldnt let me. Only way to do so was to use the new afudos 2.7. Besides this...the CPU was running 15C warmer than usual! so please STAY CLEAR OF 0304. Horrible corrupt BIOS!

I forgot the lesson i learnt some time ago dont just drop down any betabios into your system...it can seriously mess things up! :slapass:

Thanks a lot for the feedback. I decided to format and go back to Windows XP until RTM and distribution in a couple of months just to give some companies the chance to release tools and drivers better suited for Vista. I'll install the Asus Update tool and try the downgrade, if that doesn't work, I'll try AFUDOS 2.07. Thanks for the link.

As for the Raptor drive being the cause of the boot-up delay, that could very well be true, because I believe I've plugged it into the ICH7R (the Intel controller, not the Marvell). I can try switching over to the Marvell if it is the issue?

I'll report back when I have a chance to test out these theories. Thanks again.

304 is working fine for me. CPU temps normal, no crashing.

0304 works fine for me too.:)

Okay, I managed to use AFUDOS 2.07 to go back from 0304 to 0215, and temperature is back to normal. I don't know why some people don't get this issue, but I definitely ran about 15 C hotter with 0304 in place.

As for my boot problem, it's still there. I have a 30-50 second hang between the RAM count being shown and the USB devices + HDD + DVD being recognized / initialized. I have tried stripping the system until there is nothing left (not even an HDD), and the problem is still there, so it can't be an issue with the Raptor 150 vs. ICH7R chipset. I think I have a faulty P5W64 WS Pro, so I may try another one, or go to the P5W DH or whatever it's called.

This boot delay blows, and I even have the IDE wait time for device response set to 0 seconds now... crapola.

I've got the P5W64 PRO,C2D E6000, GSkill DDR2-1000 rated mem, W/C cpu only, and I noticed a few things that dont make sense to me with the CPU multiplier adjustment on this board.

Scenario 1: Set FSB to 350 set mem to DDR 700 leave mult at 9x (in bios leave "Default CPU Ratio" set to enabled), PCI locked to 33.33 / PCIe locked at 101. Everything else at default. System boots and works fine.

Scenario 2: Same settings as scenario 1, but change Default Ratio to Disabled and set multiplier to 8 (which is slower). System will not boot!!!! What changes besides the multiplier? It's like everything goes haywire when you change the Default ratio from Enabled to Disabled?

Anyone have any ideas on this?

Second Odd behavior is that of the CPU voltage adjustment (maybe already noted some place here but I've not seen it mentioned). When I switch from auto cpu voltage (which apparently turns off the CPU Interal Throttle Control) to manual voltage and I select 1.38v in bios (both in hw monitor in bios and pcprobeII) it shows 1.45v!! It appears to add .07v or so. Has anyone else seen this?

Finally, just a general question.

What are the recommended ICH / MCH / FSB voltages or at least the ones you guys are using for the 3.6 GHz OC? I can't get my computer to even post at 9x400 so I am trying to figure out where I have gone so wrong. Best I have done thus far is 9x380 but Orthos stops after 2 seconds. My cpu temp is 32C and my memory is at DDR2-800 (below spec), so I doubt it is a heat issue or memory issue. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help.

yeap
both the WS pro and WS64 overvolt...
aprox. 0,05v in windows i'd say...(idle)
and when you hit load levels above 50% on both cores
it tends to stabilize around 0,02-03
would't worry about it too much though...
(especially after all the previous seriously Undervolting Asus motherboards)

four similar - Orthos Priority9 stable - configurations i've build recently
all based on both the WS Pro & WS 64
with 6600s (various batch numbers)
will most likely settle @ 4x900 with:
Vcore 1,45 (prolly it will pass prime & SnM even@ 1.42 but orthos....)
Vmch 1.6
Vfsb 1.5
Vich7r auto...
mem timmings by spd...
(unfortunately i still haven't found a bios version
that is not that quirky when it comes to manually set memory timmings)
