ok, hard drives are one of the slowest computer components. lets see how yours compares :D

tell us model, make and specs including buffer size, interface, RPM, and RAID configuration if applicable.
then, post a benchmark using HD Tune 2.52
HD Tune alternate download

my western digital 80gb sata2 8mb buffer. i plan on adding another benchmark once i get it configured with an identical drive in RAID 0
(benchmark taken with an X2 3800+ at 2.6ghz, the new benchmark will be taken with my core 2 duo and such...)

Here is my lil' 7200rpm, 2mb, ATA133 (running on a SATA-1 controller) single platter Maxtor 40gb. Not much, but, it does the trick. :D
The CPU is an Athlon 64 3700+ at 2.72GHz on a DFI Nf4 Ultra-D.

nice, very similar in performance, looks like the sata2 interface didnt do much for my hard drive... i notice a 4C temp difference, .3ms access time difference... and quite a larger burst rate difference, though my drives minimum is slower.
i wonder how RAID 0 will effect my performance in each area ?

heres my dad hard drive, its a 60gig and its ide, but past that i have no idea what its specs are. his proc is an athlon 64 2800+ (754) 1.8ghz which i upgraded when his top of the line (haha) pentium 4 2.4ghz overheated and died.

I have some benchmarks somewere

a 64 bit card in 32 bit slot and it hits pci limit with 2 15k mau's (faster 24/7 drive over atlas II IMHO)

a single mau is fine for me now. i have a pcie raid controller i'm debating selling and might pick up a second MAU, but idk. one is plenty fast already hehe.

Can you post a link where the scsi stuff you're speaking of beats the Raptors by such a large margin (quote, "make a raptor look like a laptop 4200 drive")?

I only have two 40gb's and they're really starting to piss me off at times, so, I've been looking into getting a new drive (or drives, if I'm lucky) around christmas. I was considering a single Raptor 74gb ADFD, but, if there is something that is quite a bit faster I'd love to hear about it (so far I haven't seen anything yet) so I could look into getting that instead.

Most interesting results. These rock steady results were from 74GB Raptors in a 64Stripe on nVidia controller on Asus A8N-SLI-Premium mobo.

It is the data drive and it works perfectly apart from the temperature issue which is common for this series.

As you can see the transfer rate value is much more linear than the one of the WD740ADFD and doesn't show the same huge falldowns which I don't really know what they are due to.

4 x Seagate 320GB sata's. They run very cool and i'm very happy with their performace. I'm usualy the first one to load the map in games like BF2 and CSS. (99% of the time anyways.) AFAIK map loading and caching is really hard drive dependent. Correct me if i'm wrong. That's the main reason I got them. Faster map loading/caching

There was a thread on another forum where people were running raid 5. Raid 5 affected performance some, but not by a lot. It is plenty fast for storage. I will see if I can find you the link in the morning. Sleepy time now :) Been up with a stomach ache :mad:

well, quite obviously we can note that dual or quad hard drives would add more heat to the case and be less reliable... not "redundant" like a "Redundant Array of Inexpensive (interchangable with independant i think) Disks" suggests lol... but if run in RAID 0 can be a lot faster and more consistent. raptors lower latency and access times, but they get bottlenecked by sata150 if run in dual triple or quad RAID 0 it seems.

so heres the quandary i face... will two of these hard drives (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822135106) be fast enough for me... or would i rather 3, or even 4 of them?

and would i rather have two of those in RAID 0 and a larger storage drive, or would i rather just have four of them in RAID 0?

what are your opinions?

personally, i like the look of the raptors still, just because of the low access time.
put 4 of them in RAID 0 and you're set, though that interface still does bottleneck a little bit.

i'd have to blame that on background processes like anti-virus or something... maybe he was playing music.
i mean, running progs isnt bad during this benchmark (though its not suggested) since most of the time they run off the RAM or something...

i dono... i personally prefer speed over size. i don't use up a whole lot of hard drive space anyways... i had a 250gig for my storage drive (before i sold my X2 rig) and i was only using 1/3 of it at the time...

scsi rock once you have sampled them there is no going back, its not just the raw speed but the tasty access times and the 2 % cpu usage and not 10% plus of normal drives :p

Oh ya, a nice SCSI 15K drive + cute U320 Cables + adapters to 68 pin + terminators cost about the same as 4*320GB 7200.10s.

This is Xtreme systems not Xtreme value for money and you left out the price for the control card too :D

If you are not running a huge database or webserver you will not know the difference.

The Mau line and Atlas II line of drives are made for single user enviroments not server multi user ones, if you have a raptor you know how much faster they FEEL over other sata ide drives, due to the lower responce time, its the same thing with high end scsi drives

Looks like so far I have the fastest access time :woot:

The sad thing is is this setup is gone in 2 days for a 150 GB Raptor. My X-FI will not play nice with my SCSI setup (the worst crackling you ever heard), so I decided to sell the SCSI for a Raptor. Rest of system is in Sig.

#69, Thank you :) Im waiting for my BBU so I can play a little with the cache on this controller. The performance should improve quite some, atleast that whats Intel claimes.. but wouldnt we if we charged ~ $400 for a stick of 256mb ddr2 with a tiny battery at the back ?

interesting that your scsi drives are seen by this program. my 29160n isnt seen :(

also, that's way too much for a bbu, for that price, just grab a normal ddr2 stick and run it without the write option thar requires the battery. buffered writes is the name of it iirc.

Well, I need a new sas cage, and it is on its way to Denmark. The discs wasnt all that expensive. Some guy screwed him self up at a auctionsite, and sold me 9 for ~ $65 a piece :)

Im told that 4 Raptor 36 Gb 16 Mb in raid 0 will increase search times :(

yeh thats what i thought until i actually tested.. read back 1-2 pages back, ive posted results just on this.

btw, ive read in that thread that 2 raptors is faster than 4.. reason i didnt post a response.

2 = 160MB/s
4 = 310MB/s

access time remains the same at least on my areca controllers

edit: some pics dont show up anymore

And I dont even think I can run 4x 36 Gb Raptor, 16 mb model ADFD with my onboard controllers :(

For some reason HD Tune is reporting my array as 2TB, so I dont know the accuracy of its results, probably just a limit of the application. Array is on an Areca 1230, with 12xSeagate 7200.10 500GB, 256MB write through cache, 128k stripes, in RAID 5. I do know that the IOP is my bottleneck, and that the 1231ML controller should alleviate that issue. I do get higher throughput with 8 drives due to this limitation.

I've been waiting for Areca to release some IOP341 cards for a while, and the new IOP makes my old results look rather slow.

finally 500+ hdtach nice! :clap: thats awesome, watta a difference between the 2 iops, 300Mhz difference and it shows.. i got higher result with 7x raptor (460MB/s) than with 8x (410MB/s) in hdtach on iop333, cant wait to get my iop341 now.. :)

Is your array in RAID5 or RAID0? Mine is in RAID5 right now. I'm wondering why your reads are so high, that IOP331 does max out way before 900MB/s, perhaps its just the cache effecting it. I should put one of my 1GB DDR2 sticks in and see what happens.

If you want I can put you in touch with the guys I picked up my ARC1231 from. I don't think any retailer has them yet.

8anet was selling them before Areca was making them though, so who knows what you'll get there. :nono:

I'm sorry, it appears my older card the Areca 1230 has the IOP333 processor, not the IOP331, which appears on their lower end cards. As I found out, the IOP333 maxes out at about 8 drives in RAID5, and the IOP341 easily outperforms it.

My two Maxtor DiamondMax drives. They're really old now, remeber running RAID 0 on them back in the NF7-S earliest days :) Had some serious stability issues with RAID back then. The drives hasn't been formated for little more than a year, if my memory's correct.
RAID-0, 8MB cache, nVidia NF3 RAID-controller and a Turion @ 2250MHz

My Seagate drive. Works fine, got it from a friend as a birthday gift. Although he thought of the drive as defect. Had some serious problems running in his computer, been working fine in mine for little more than a year :)

its RAID0, its that high cause of the cache.. looking @ ur bench u r limited by the cache

lol @ 8anet, i couldve order it when it came out but because of the holidays i just dont have the time.. after the new years.. thanx though, appreciate it.
