new evap séries on test, Ricky/sl4ck

hi :D my friend sl4ck that lives in my city has a lathe on his house :D so we meet in order to try to make my dream evap, here is the diagram, is like the other i made, but with very more area of contact:

well, experimenting the lathe we saw steep by steem is more easy to make, but honestly the thig i dont like on this evaps is how heat is transfered by the center cilinder, i prefere maze styles :D why dont mix the 2?? :D.

thinking how to get more area of contact and how to cool better the central cilinder i think on somthing like this:

liquid goes steep by steep but on 1st's steeps it is forced to run inside the central cilinder cooling, making more area and removint the heat more directly from cpu, like on a maze

last pic is kidding with blaster becouse of cigarrets using imitation of marlboro cigarrets, but it is good to see how small is the evap, it will fit an vapochill ls kit. using 2mm for each steep that is more than enough to get good contact.

Ssilencer, i think you dont understand, check the diagrams becouse on evap pics is dificult to see, check first 2 steeps. if you are talking about imitations, well, all this kind of evaps are very close, why not to put similar pics on each evaporator we see? please check the diagrams better please. and argue about the ideia that moves this evap that i dont see on aitors evap :) you just saw the size. if i made 1 a litle tall you dont say it's imitation?...

and i dont ever think i'v inventing the powder. just changing ideias with you for example.

Ssilencer take a look at the degin drawings, forget the pics(they don´t show all), some part it's @itor/Chily1 like, but the top of the evap bottom has some nice little holes to make the gas pass trought the evap center, so it absorves the heat very close to CPU, evaporation keeps evap center cold since the second bottom step, step by step.

It's not our ideia to make @itor's evap copy, we're only trying to think the best way physic rules work. :toast:

Looking at the first picture you need to make four slightly different blades for lathe in order to be able to make the design. Its possible but making the required tools may take little time.

yes, i'v talked with a lathe operator and he explay-me how to make that slightly different blades but he told-me it will be hard. and it is hard becouse of 14mm deep, it need very slim blades in order to do not touch the lateral channel, and it broke very easy, :S

i'll try to get pics of some blades we have made.

nice idea! will work much better then a spiral/stepper evap I think! I always hated the fact that spiral's have little contact area close to the core.

I honestly think anything after 1 step beyond your bottom 2 is going to matter much unless evap is having hard time keeping up with heatload (doubt it) :)

well I also like to think that my silver evaps are the best in the world but problem is that without unbiased testing there is no way to tell who is on the right track.

i use @ years small and efficient maze style evaps... now i'm studding a new model (FOR ME) easy to make. and my evaps for singles have the same size.

I like where you are going with this evap, it looks really promising.

I think 2-3 steps like you have is enough. After using the @itor evap I see that weigth and size makes not much difference.

I think the design of the bottom step is 90% of evap performance

did you lap on a glass plate? on the picture with the reflection of the camera you see that at the edges the reflection is disformed. This suggests that the bottom is not flat but a little bit rounded. The other possibility is that it is just an effect of the camera's lens that cannot compensate fully for spherical abberation at that short distances. If the reflection is also disformed when you look at it with your own eyes I think you need to lap again.

it was lapped on a glass plate, it is not rounded for sure, i'll try other pics :) the evap is on sl4ck house :)

3 sand paper kinds @ glass plate, lapped @ hand, 3 polish kinds(fast cut, fine, super fine) and @ last Duraglit. Maybe it's a camera efect

then it is probably just the lens :) good to hear, would be a shame if you had to do it all over again ;)

laped is good and is must be maded for all evaps

and yes, this is absordly well polished the problem is that sl4ck work is good, he dont have to many work lol :D

the last was 1200 i think, sl4ck have all the merit on this lapping :)

1200 :eek: ! I've been using that on my evap for about half an hour and still cant get anywhere near as good effect as that! Any tips ?

sand paper(240,600,1200), car polish(fast cut, fine, super fine), duraglit, and most: strong hands :D

If you have a chance can you please post a pic of the tooling you used to make the evap [ricky]

This sort of thing makes me wish that I was back at home with the lathe and milling machine.

So pressing on more when sanding gives a better finish?

e prefer to use the midle way, not less, not much

After you finished lapping clean your evaporator thoroughly with ATF and at last isoprophyl alcohol. Should get better temps..

use "wet" paper and keep the surface wet, you do need to go in steps of about 200 grit. buy good 3m paper. If your doing it by hand expect more than 30 min.

240 will put deep scratches in the face,if you have a lot to cut start with 360. if its fairly level start with 400 or 600

corse, i forget to tell, allways keep sand paper very, very wet, yeah about 30 min all the work.

i used 240, because i had a litlle silver @ the evap base, yes it does some scratches, but nothing that 600 sand paper can´t handle ;)

Gotta be better than the lathes at my school :D. They wouldnt' cut into my copper without it making the loudest grinding noise i've ever heard... Even with a very sharp tool, fast rpm and very slowly...

i has cut copper on a tiny 12"X6"X4" table top CNC meant for plastic or wood.

I was trying to make an evap from a bar of 38mm solid copper.
My teacher said he used to be a lathe technician or someting a few years ago, and told me to just move in very slowly. But everytime I did, it just made a horrible grinding noise. My teacher said it was the lathes that were too old and they wern't working properly :( .

This is the lathe I was using. Sorry I only have this and 1 other picture a little closer up. (Phones are banned from our school so I have to be quick so I dont get caught :p: . Its also only a 2mega-pixel camera on the phone :) ).

I looked in our garage and found some of that isopropyl alcohol. Do you need to soak the evap in it? Or does it just need wiping with a cloth with a small amount on?

Well quite frankely... most of lathe should be able to handle it if tool is set correctly (even few thousandth of height or alignment on lathe seem to make huge difference) on parting... especially on copper -__-;
Here is the lathe I have, it's more for R&D and for finishing up not so good finished evap or sleeve for exact fit I like. Backlash has been adjusted to about 2 thousandth... Only bad thing is, I have some play on the table itself which I can't figure out how to fix short of making new gib for it that has better tolerance... -_-; I believe this probably is cheapest lathe you can find ahaha...(it's commonly called 7x10 mini lathe)

Here is what I played around with recently just for toying around using it. Of course, I was cussing myself every minute or so complaining how underpowered this lathe is. I ended up grinding the tool to reduce friction as much as I could so the small dinky motor won't just keep stop. It has self preserving feature to prevent major disaster from happening which in this case was slowing me down a lot.

Nope, I have no intention of doing more than few once in a while just to remind myself not to use this lathe for this use... :) But for those with patience and want to DIY, lathe is relatively inexpensive to toy around until you start upgrading things... :)

Im sure the parting tool was set correctly. My teacher checked it many times and said it should be fine.
Anyway, this is what I ended up with after running out of time. I had to take the bar out the lathe and saw the evap off with a hand saw:mad: . Thats why you can see a small ledge on the right side.
Btw this was supposed to be a stepper evap. I didn't bother using it because I doubt I could find a sleeve to fit it properly.

that evap looks good ricky, if you can when drilling those holes throught the bottom layer dont make them too large as it wont be restristive enough.
Be interesting to see the results between a normal evap and one with the channels same size etc.

No he means the spindle that is at back of actual spindle turning for lathe job. For parting cuts, it is recommended NOT to use tail stock as part are meant to be fallen off instead of getting crunched in between when job is done and potentially breaking parting tool, flying, out, hurting someone, etc.

but during the cutting opteration you USE the tail stock ,especially if you have a lot of chatter. you may also need to adust the ways on the slide and cross slide.

looks like bit may be dull or ground wrong.

sorry can't teach that in words.

Im sure the height was fine, it was set and checked by both my teacher (who used to work on lathes) and the guy who's head of technology.
Thats how i'd describe the parting though... 'chattering'. It sounded like a strong grinding noise as I was trying to cut into the copper.
As for using the tail stock, im not sure. I will see if I can find out next technology lesson I have :).

Thing is, this was my first ever time using a lathe. I think the end result was ok but the actual lathe was the thing that let the cutting down. Aparantly the machines are very old, and the company they are made by went bust a while ago.
