Anyone know how to do it? I used the search toolbar and only got 2 hits from it, both didn't seem to have a pencil mod, just solder one.

I need it too!!!
Id like to know all the voltage mods lol pencil and not
I belive that you can only pencil the Vdroop mod. the rest you have to solder:)

just pencil the Vdroop smd capacitor instead of using a 50K VR - worked for me

you will need at least a 4B, preferably an 8B as anything less does not drop resistance very much. I tried with a 3B and nothing but with a 6B vdroop(loaded) went from .03V to .02V. better soldering a pot which I wouldve done today if I could find my multimeter!
Is this mod for more mem volt? or?

Slowly finding the balls to be a bit more adventurous and decided to do the Asus P5B Deluxe vdroop pencil mod :D I used a 2B pencil and about 4 strokes across resistor pictured with yellow line through it below:
http://fileshosts.com/intel/Asus/P5B...pencil_mod.jpg
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before vdroop pencil mod
- resistance was DMM measured at 80 ohm
- 1.325v bios set vcore = 1.280-1.288v bios monitored, 1.29v idle/1.27v load Asus PC Probe2 reported.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After vdroop pencil mod
- resistance was DMM measured at 37.4 ohm
- 1.325v bios set vcore = 1.296v steady bios monitored, 1.30v idle/1.30v load Asus PC Probe2 reported.
I'm happy with that for now a reduction in vdroop by ~0.03v Asus PC Probe2 reported under load. Not going to be too greedy :D
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before vdroop pencil mod @1.325v bios set
CPU Prime95 v25.1v small ffts load:
http://fileshosts.com/intel/Asus/P5B...ime95_load.png
CPU Prime95 v25.1v small ffts post load idle:
http://fileshosts.com/intel/Asus/P5B...tload_idle.png
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After vdroop pencil mod @1.325v bios set
CPU Prime95 v25.1v small ffts load:

CPU Prime95 v25.1v small ffts post load idle:
http://fileshosts.com/intel/Asus/P5B...tload_idle.png
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3600Mhz use to take 1.45v (1.38v Asus PC Probe2 loaded), now with vdroop pencil mod 1.4125v (1.38v Asus PC Probe2 loaded) :)
http://fileshosts.com/intel/Asus/P5B...ime95_load.png
wait hold on, pumbertot says 8B, but eva used 2B????? im confuzzled!
btw, i think less strokes = less resistance.
plz, im begging you to correct me if im wrong.
i must be carefull, as i love my p5b deluxe wifi very very dearly
more strokes = lowered resistance
really only diff between pencils is one will require more strokes to reach same lower resistance than the other pencil :)
At higher vcore above 1.6125v the initial pencil modded of drooping resistor from 80ohm to 37ohm resistance wasn't enough to prevent further vdroop. So whipped out the 2B pencil and dropped resistance down to 14.5 ohm. And now it's all good at least from bios perspective :)
Final outcome

Improvements after vdroop pencil mod are amazing! Before the mod, 10x 400FSB = 4000Mhz would need 1.7v max vcore set in bios for 1.62v idle and 1.59v load. I could pass single Super Pi 32M but Systool dual 32M Pi would reboot at 50-80% mark - Systool dual 32M Pi is a good indicator of whether a setting is capable of dual Super Pi 32M.. Now with vdroop pencil mod, with vcore set to 1.65v in bios I get 1.616-1.624v idle and 1.624v load and now capable of Systool dual 32M Pi :D
Idle

My P5B is in the mail..
Ok i done the Mod :D
When under Load it goes from 1.47v to 1.49v. This normal or have i gone a bit iver the top with the pencil. :p:

Sweet, thanks eva2k! I think I might do this next weekend!
EDIT: Wheres the best, easiest to access vCore measure point on this board?
EDIT2: Can a pencil vCore mod be done by penciling where hicookie soldered a 50k VR?
Not bad i'd say with steady vcore

Ok this Mod is the best thing i could have done. Fast simple and Works a treat.
Before it took 1.55v (Set in Bios) to achieve 4Ghz stable. Now i set it too 1.475v (In Bios) and i am running sweet as a nut. :)
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/882...rimezq3.th.jpg
Eva2000, is it ok that i get a slight increase in Vcore when going to Load.
not sure if it's okay.. but it happens to me
Swapped in my Q6600 B3 on P5B Deluxe with same vdroop pencil mod at 14.5k ohm.
Before vdroop pencil mod = 3600Mhz at 1.575v bios = 1.4480v load
After vdroop pencil mod = 3600Mhz at 1.45v bios = 1.432v idle and 1.440v load! :D
Using 1KW OCZ ProXStream psu.
I'm happy for now :D
pic of my mod
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p...2/IMG_0604.jpg
It worked/works great for me too.
Simple and effective.
I was surprised that the more lead you put on there the more resistance though. I used a no.2 pencil and set my vcore down to 1.5(bios) and it reads 1.48 in the hardware monitoring(bios) and programs.
Before I'd set it at 1.5 and got 1.456.
And stable across the board when loaded, no drop at all now.
vdroop pencil mod on P5B Deluxe really boosted my Q6600 benching max speeds from 3600mhz to now 3829mhz max screenie at only 1.464v vcore load !

Great improvment, im seeing around 100mhz increase aswell due to lower Temps. Im getting around 4oC temp improvment due to lower Vcore. :)
Eva2000, Thats certainly a nice water setup you have there dude. Handles the quad core superb. I take it the asus tool has a problem reading CPU temps on Quad cores?
If i use a 2B pencil for this mod, how much kohm do i have then?
default it is 80kohm. I want 14.5kohm, after seeing this table:
http://i4memory.com/reviewimages/mot...lmod_table.jpg
I might try this on my new p5b dlx mobo next week.
What are the risks and precautions I should take?
although this mod helped eliminate dvroop a bit, it did not help the fact that when i enter 1.67 something vcore, asus probe only detects it as 1.6. why is this hapening and how do i fix it?
Did you try AI suite from Asus or some other monitor? Could be asus probe. Asus probe always read my temps wrong.
Hmm, anyone try just taking some conductive ink and a needle to just bridge it for vdroop, like on ds3? I'd imagine actual vcore might be a tad higher than set from general consensus. Kind of like old asus' in p3 days where actual vcore was higher than set by a bit
Just wanted to report back with my results. I ran out of conductive ink so I settled for the #2 pencil approach. I did a measurement initially and :banana::banana::banana:!! 130k ohm?!?!?! my dmm is still low on battery, and was giving inaccurate results when I used it a week ago, but in some preliminary testing, it's seeming to be ok. also, I warmed the battery in my hand for a few minutes if that helped.
But anyway. Initial was 130k instead of 80k?? Ok. I started shading up a storm. I remember doing the pencil mod on my 7900gs and I was there for minutes shading. So I shaded for a full minute or so. Checked it again. 5k ohm. Hmm.... way lower than the 14 or so you tested. Alright! Boot it up.
The p5b vanilla is starting to show some ugly cold boot issues I thought I was escaping when I left the ds3 but oh well. It died the first time so I pulled the plug and tried again. I went in bios, and it was at failsafe 266fsb again with 1.325v vid. I check vcore in bios and am seeing 1.320v. Cool. Right around what vid of 1.325 is. Put back the 1.425v I needed before vdroop mod just so I could establish a baseline.
Boot into windows at 8x400=3200, 1.425v set vcore.
Fire up cpuz and speedfan. Speedfan reports 1.42v. Ooooh.
Cpuz reports 1.424v. Holy smokes :).
Fire up orthos to load it. It goes up to 1.432v and hasn't budged. Sexy sexy.
edit: I'm down at 5k ohm now and am liking it a lot, but I'm still curious what 0 ohm would do. better not push luck right at this moment though since I'm so satisfied with the one minute of my time. Now time to explore any possible p5b vanilla vdimm mods.
update: 1.35v set vcore. 1.344 idle. 1.352 load. gorgeous figures. looks like it pretty much countered vdrop as well.
Nice results,
I think ill need a bit more shading on mine then.hehe "Grabs Pencil from pot":p:
Aye. 1.325v set results in 1.320 idle and 1.328 load :).
Also, bios seems to report identical values as cpuz during idle.
Here's a summary for 5k ohm:
Set Bios/Idle Load
1.425 1.424 1.432
1.350 1.344 1.352
1.325 1.320 1.328
I haven't tried a wider range of vcores and I know extrapolation isn't always a good idea, but hey, 3 for 3 great results :)
How do you remove the pencil (without contaminating other parts) once it has been shaded onto the resistor on the motherboard?
rubber / qtip+alcohol. I've personally never used rubber. a few wipes with qtip and alcohol and its gone
Thanks!
How do you pencil? Do you pencil on top of the resistor or around it? I'm not sure how?
On Top of resistor mate.Quote:

I've just done it and it works! I used a HB pencil.
Before I needed 1.3V set in the BIOS for 356x9 (3.2ghz) with my e6600. Vdroop at idle is 1.28V, at load it stays at 1.28V :D
Now I only set 1.2875V set in the BIOS and there is not much vdroop. :D Vdroop at idle is 1.26V, load is 1.27V! :D
I'm currently running orthos at 400x9 (3.6ghz) 1.45V set in the BIOS, 1.43V idle & load :D
Before I needed to set 1.5125V in the BIOS.
I'm EXTREMELY happy by how much this simple mod has helped me! :D
you're telling me :) now if only i can figure out what to shade for vdimm mod on vanillas
I did it

man you had the board on your carpet? damn, that'd scare me most
LOL dude I ran out of static bags. But it works so i am happy lesson learned . but dude this mod is like uber cool and scarry

Vcore set in BIOS: 1.4875v
Vcore monitor in BIOS: 1.48v
vCore in Speedfan 4.32Beta8=1.48v @ idle ....
vcore in speedfan = 1.48v loaded with dual Prime
Now, need to find the point where I can measure vcore with DMM.
P.S: btw, do you have vdroop pencil mod for P5N-E SLI board ? :D
wow this actually worked for me
I was lazy and i just freehanded it while my motherboard was in the case
All i had was a lead pencil and a flashlight
surprisingly it worked
before
bios set - 1.4 ,
idle - 1.34
load - 1.36
after
bios set - 1.4
idle - 1.37
load - 1.38
I now get the same results with just setting 1.356 as opposed to 1.4
nice work , thanks eva for the pic
Same. I did not bother removing the board from the case, used a flashlight and a steady hand and coloured in that bastard grey :D
Not many vcore settings actually vdroop at all now.
eg. 8x475 Set 1.525 bios AI Suite reports 1.504v Idle. Load = Dual 32M Systool 1.504v! :)
1.50 bios = 1.48 windows = 1.48 load
1.55 bios = 1.528 windows = 1.528 load
This mod scores 10/10
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
I didn't cover the resistor after I did the pencil mod. Will the pencil stay there for a long time?
it most likely wont, i had to redo my 7600gt pencil mod after like 6 months?Quote:

I did vdroop but I cannot find any benefit out of it.
Beside it makes you feel better with lower vcore set in bios (which might allow people to increase vcore settings), it does not make any different in term of "REAL" vcore put on CPU.
In other words, it won't make CPU uses less voltage....
Please correct me if I am wrong.
It eliminates the voltage drop at load.Quote:

Ok, so being adventerous pay off, notice the mod area of P5B-E Plus and P5B Deluxe is almost similar. So I just whack and took a HB pencil to shade for around 10 seconds, back and forth.

Vcore Bios Set - 1.362

I am running E4300 at 3000Mhz. Due of the Vdrop i have to set my Vcore in bios at 1.3625 to get a 1.28 Vcore at LOAD
Now i only have to set 1.29 to get a 1.28 Vcore in load. Othors Stable for 9 hours.
Not Only does this mod helps in Vdrop, helps stablise my Vcore also. Thanks XS
this mod is probably the best mod ive ever done.. i went from max overclock 3.255ghz (7x465mhz FSB) to 3.4ghz (7x486mhz FSB) with everything the same in the bios.. with the more stable vcore, the processor is clocking ALOT BETTER! thats 3.4ghz @ LESS THEN STOCK VOLTAGE!!! now thats amazing!! almost 100% overclock (still testing, but soo far soo good)Quote:

Yes. I used a 2B pencil and coloured it in bascially :D
On 0804 bios I was getting a consistent 0.08v droop under load. I recently flashed to 0901 and I am now getting 0 droop on every vcore setting I have used thus far (not all of them tested).
eg 1.475 bios = 1.456 windows idle and under orthos load. 1.3125 bios = 1.288 windows idle and load.
I'm not 100% sure its to do with 0901 but it sure as hell is a big coincidence :)
http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/5...00vcorenv3.png
I used an ordinary HB pencil and it worked fine with a few strokes.
2b-8b are best as they have higher purity of graphite(better conduction) but HB can work too with some pencil mods(not all) es[ecially those where you are only lowering hte resistance by a very small margin. use a DMM to check resistance before and after, 14-15kohms or so seems to be great for next to zero vdroop.
If i've understood right the p5b deluxe mods and the ones for p5b-e plus are the same, right?
I've been trying to do the pencil vdrop mod on my plus but it doesn't seem to work. Can anyone confirm that the mods are the same?
I can confirm Eva2000's picture works on the P5B Non-Deluxe/Non-E and should work on the P5B-E. The area you are supposed to pencil is the 4th lead from the bottom right. While on the P5B and P5B-E the remainder of the resisters are different the following section is exactally the same (however the position might be slightly different). The Resister you need to pencil is the fourth from the bottom right as illustrated in my picture. Just follow the trace and paint away.

Thankyou Eva2000 for your picture! Someone PM a Mod to sticky this
Thanks.
That is the one i've been trying to pencil but nothing happens. The vdrop on this board is terrible. Really need to get is to work.
Should is just continue to pencil the same spot or is possible that the mod should be don't somewhere else on the p5b-e plus?
Well i used to get 1.5v when i put my CPU to 1.55v
And now after the mod, which i did w/ a regular HB, or No.2 Pencil, i shaded that thing for like a minute and now i get 1.548 in Bios. And i get 1.54v in windows :D
Best and easiest mod ive EVER done!
People, nobody tried to measure a VCORE before and after MOD by a multimeter? Or everyone trust indications CPU-Z/Asus Probe/Speedfan/etc.
On my motherboard the real voltage is much less, than is exposed in BIOS:
(all voltages in idle)
BIOS: 1,425 CPU-Z: 1,38 Measured: 1,27
BIOS: 1,7 CPU-Z: 1,64 Measured: 1,44
Your MM sucks. I trust bios more then when I trust where you're putting those probes :)
Here points of measurement:
Attachment 56836
My dmm works perfectly, for example:
BIOS: 12,14 Measured: 12,10
BIOS: 5,08 Measured: 5,12
IS this the right spot on P5B-E?
http://www.3dxtreme.net/other/p5b%20mod/DSC02682a.jpg
Yes that is the one I shaded on my P5B. The reason I highlighted the picture is because excluding that part the rest of the motherboard's transister positions are different, however the 4th lead from the vreg chip is the one that controls the vroop apparentally on all p5b boards since it worked very well on mine.
Hey dnottis, you have a dmm? I found vdimm pencil mod for p5b vanilla and might be able to help with -e. I know you're not liking the 2.1v
I just cleaned and recoated the SB, NB and did the pencil vcore mod. Also, popped the cap off the NB sink and stuck a 50mm fan on there.
What a difference!!
This is with 1.38v set in bios, idle is 1.386v, load is 1.392 lol. Great job, fast - easy mod...
http://www.3dxtreme.net/other/Asus%2...3577-1.38v.jpg
man what a good chip you have
I just got my basically new un-modded P5B-Deluxe a few days ago from the "For Sale" thread here to maybe replace my eVGA 680i. I have pretty much spent the last few days stability testing this board to get some decent baseline numbers with no mods. The stock vdroop resistor's value was 80.02 kohms and I lowered the resistance value to 25.04kohms, this gave me stable voltages upwards of about 1.55v. Voltages set above that in BIOS exhibited vdroop although not as bad as stock. Below are the CPU voltage values I was getting before pencil mod.
Pre-Pencil Mod:
VCORE (BIOS Setting): 1.45v
Actual DMM Measured Value (Idle): 1.434v
Actual DMM Measured Value (Load w/Orthos Small-FFT's): 1.392v-1.388v
Vdroop Between Idle/Load: 0.042v-0.046v
Post-Pencil Mod:
VCORE (BIOS Setting): 1.45v
Actual Measured Value (Idle): 1.445v
Actual DMM Measured Value (Load w/Orthos Small-FFT's): 1.443v-1.441v
Vdroop Between Idle/Load: 0.002v-0.004v
This mod certainly has the most bang-for-buck of any mod I've done before, lol! The 5min it took me to pencil that resistor was well worth it and I'd suggest anyone try it if your hesitant to hard-mod it (even though a hard-mod would be more reliable)! Posted below are some of the stability tests I have run since doing the pencil mod, nothing crazy but great baseline numbers before I really start pushing things!

I need pencil mod for dimm, and i find that:
Is ok? (works?)
Just did the vdroop mod on my board, highly recommended. It's the easiest thing ever :)
Celeron-D 1.475v = 1.40-1.43 load-idle (without mod)
,, ,, = 1.46-1.46 load-idle (with mod)
20 second job :)
Done..for CPU.
But i need pencil for vdimm...
can anyone put a pic of before and after vmod? i think im not doing it right (not enough painting the resistor)
i've had a couple of these boards now and ONLY spot that reliably measure vcore for me is the red one here
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/7366/1035144mg3.jpg
This mod is awesome :)
me and my buddy did it yesterday and now i can run my e6300 at 1.1375V (bios) / 1.10 (windows) :)
I just did this mod. But I have a reverse Vdroop issue. lol.
I set 1.45 in bios and when I run orthos, I get 1.46V
I guess it means I used a bit too much lead. Is this harmful? or should I be OK?
My Vcore NEVER drops below 1.45v in windows if I set it to 1.45 in Bios.
n91htmare,
Well when you were applying the lead to the resistor how much did you lower the resistance (did you use a DMM to do this)? Although people do it all the time it is a VERY good idea to use a multi-meter when making any modifications like this because otherwise there is no way to know how much you lowered the resistance.
In my case I lowered the resistance of the vdroop resistor to about 24.21kohms which in my case seemed like the best value (I only used voltage under 1.55v). With that all said I don't know if it is harmful or not. I suppose there is a chance you lowered the resistance to much that its now just a connection with no resistance, this might be harmful? Hopefully someone with more experince than me will verfiy this or not?
well I measured it at 19.2kohm So I redid it to about 24kohm.
Now when i set 1.48 in bios, I get about 1.46 in windows......
is it ok to go beyound 14.5 ohm?? like 5 ohm or less? does it shortens the lifespan of the motherboard? or is this correction absolutly healthy?
EDIT: itīs not ohms, itīs KOHMS, with means kilo ohms, wich means 1000 ohms, so default 80.000 ohms, to mod: 15.000 ohms, I donīt know how you do that by pencil, I have tried different ways and only got it down to 75.000 ohms, I canīt believe you go down as 15.000 ohms by pencil!! how is that??
Sorry to thread dig, but i've seen a lot of discussion on where to measure Vcore, and a few people saying that the best measure points (socket side of the coils) is very difficult you access. I'd just like to point out to those who haven't thought of it, that the coil contacts protrude out the rear side of the mobo so you can just measure from them ;)
Well, I just did the mod,
Before mod - Set Bios 1.5v / Windows 1.44 under load
After mod - Set Bios 1.5v / Windows 1.48~.49 under load
Totally worth it.
Can someone point me to a guide for this mod? I'd be interested in something that shows exactly which of these to shade, and where it's located on the board (P5B-Del).
Does this apply to the Commando also? Since they're almost identical?
Wow, this worked so well. I used a 2B pencil I got in a pack for $3.
Before I ran with w/ a BIOS vcore of 1.3250 and got (CPUz) idle/load: 1.280v/1.232v which is a vdroop of 0.048v/0.050v respectively. After the mod I get the following (CPUz) idle/load: 1.296v/1.288v which is a vdroop of 0.008v/0.010v respectively. I just now adjusted the BIOS vcore down to 1.2625v which gives (again CPUz) idle/load: 1.232v/1.232v which as you can see is a vdroop of 0/0.
I have a q6600 @ 9x333 by the way.
Thanks to all for this great info.
I guess this only lowers idle power consumption and temps since my load vcore is the same as pre-mod, but I'll take it :)
I ended-up making a new post for this here with higher quality pics.
Question: how long does this last for people. I read 6 mo. in this thread. Can someone who has done this a while ago comment? dnottis maybe? Others?
couple of questions please guys ...
1st one - do you have to be ULTRA careful when applying the pencil - as graphite is a conductor - so if any "dust" gets on any surrounding tracks etc is it a major problem ?
2nd one -is that the reason people use the "clear" paper when applying to stop the dust getting anywhere it shouldn't on the mobo ?
thanks, Mark.
