Asus P5W64 PRO

:eek: Ok so i just spend 260 euros on the Asus P5W64 pro. :eek:
No wonder they call it the wall street quartet! U need to take a mortage to buy this puppy :)

Now after having had the P5WDH, and being frustrated by the vdrops im now being frustrated by the overvolting that this motheboard does.Besides that im running 10C warmer, on this board according to probe compared to the P5WDH.

e.g. I set 1.4v in the bios, probe and cpuz reads 1.45 lol

Which basically leaves me very confused, the temperature reading coming from this mobo and CPU differ a lot compared to my old P5WDH setup.
I know there might not be so many owners for this board yet, but if u happen to be reading this then feel free to shed some light on this.

Have you tried seeing what the CoreTemp program reports?

@timko, now thats really ironic, Now Core temp reports lower temperatures than my probe. What can i conclude from this.......

e.g. now @ 1.5v core temp reads 71C and probe 75C go figure :stick:

Did you run coretemp on your previous P5WDH setup at all and see what difference there was between coretemp and Probe on that?

Yes i did, i looked up my notes and core temp is running about the same temps as on my previous setup and now probe is what seems to be reporting
10C more. Long live asus!!! :slapass: bah why cant they deliver a single steady mobo! If its not this..then its that....

I can also confirm that CoreTemp usually reads LOWER than PC Probe on my P5W64, whereas on the P5WDH it was the opposite.

@Durzel, m8 ill try and see how far it takes me, only thing im worried aobut @ the moment since im on air are the temperatures. Ill see how far i can push my CPU. Do you want stability or just being able to load into windows?

Well, don't do anything you're not comfortable doing :)

I was basically trying to work out what the max FSB is on the board. Try lowering your multiplier using CrystalCPUID and putting the FSB up with Clockgen (ICS 954123 is the IC for the board I think).

If you're not sure what any of this means don't worry. :)

@ durzel well im loading up now @ 440FSB all auto. My CPU is burning up though. I can super PI 1M stable.

Was that 440 set in the BIOS? Memory 1:1?

Easy way to tell is to look for a chip on the mobo that has the letters ICS printed on it (you'll probably find it around the northbridge). Also on the chip will be the number you need to select in clockgen. It should be the one you mentioned but you can use this method to check on other mobos :)

Thanks - that's useful to know :) I just assumed it was IC 954123 because thats what it is on the P5W-DH, plus it detected my clocks and let me use the sliders so I figured it must be right :)

So just for clarity... you set 440 FSB in the BIOS, 1:1 memory and all voltages on AUTO?

The overvolting thing really sucks, my P5WDG2 WS Pro does the same thing and I hate it.

From what I've read, the P5W DH might just be a better board for overclocking. It allows lower voltages and runs cooler (at least the CPU does)

I'm tempted to try a P5W-DH

What's ironic is that the P5W DH is the 1st board I bought but I never even opened it.

I tried a DQ6, A Badaxe and now the P5WDG2 WS Pro!

P5W-DH is a great board I think, and the fact there seem to be so many BIOS coming out for it recently (there's even a downward multi BIOS now, but its a bit buggy apparently) shows that Asus regard it as their "main" consumer board.

It just sucks that there's already two revisions of it out and - in the UK certainly - there doesn't seem to be a way of guaranteeing that you'll get the better version.

Plus, getting over 400FSB seems to be a bit of a crapshoot.

I had hoped that the P5W64 would guarantee me an easy 450+ FSB 1:1 but at the moment it's almost as bad as my original P5W-DH was. Early days though I guess.

Only thing really going for it is the quad PCIe part - could add an Areca card later on if I wanted (so could you with the P5WDG2 WS Pro) and get insane RAID speeds. :)

wow high temps you got there.. mm.. i think you should be much better using other heatsink.. just my 2 cents.. :D

btw nice clocks.. most cpu's cant reach 440 fsb on a 975x chips.. :)

If that were true, how is it that Hexus and AndreYang both posted reviews saying that they got 500FSB and 470FSB with no mods at all? Presumably "no mods" also means no changes to the cooling system (other than maybe changing TIM)

yes m8 thats what im telling ya...had to raise the vcore for the CPU after a 1m of super pi my cpu was burnin.

Setting memory to 3:2 meant I could ClockGen up to 460 before having problems (I know screenshot shows 450, but I got higher after it). Setting it to 470 locked the machine.

This is with vDimm 2.1v, vMCH 1.7, everything else AUTO (except vCore but that's irrelevant I think?). Manual memory setting in BIOS, then everything other than the 4-4-4-12 changed to match SPD.

Does this mean my G.Skill memory is not capable of running over ~410FSB 1:1? If so, how come I can boot into Windows and run Prime when its running 500Mhz? (not on 1:1)

Try upping the vdimm to at least 2.3v

yeah you can either up the vdimm a bit or loosen timings a bit.

But this isn't at 1:1 like I said. :) If you look at the Clockgen screen you'll see that the memory is running at 337Mhz, well below its rated speed of 400.

If I could get it to 450 1:1 I would be very happy.

I loved the overvolting feature of the P5WDG2 WS Pro, the only problem was that it seemed to undervolt when you set vCore any higher than 1.6v in BIOS. Albeit, that's using hardware monitor to measure not a DMM, but i think it's close to reality because I could get the same overclocks at 1.6v BIOS (1.64v reading - overvolt) as I could at 1.7v BIOS (1.64v reading - undervolt)

What really sucks is it only allows 1.7vCore and 2.4vdimm :(

I think he meant "higher voltages", but you're right. :)

Also, do any of us know what vCore Conroes die at yet? Has anyone actually killed one? All I know is that they're something like 1.3v stock, less for ES chips... and people are cranking them up to 1.6v and 1.7v already. :eek: P4 Northwoods basically died very quickly above 1.85v regardless of cooling.

Can you fit another PCI-E card in there though? I ask as thats what I want, I have an X1900XTX and an ARECA 1210 at the moment and want to add a second X1900 for Crossfire....

Looking at the pictures of the board and the size of the X1900s, I can't see how you can fit 2 x GFX + RAID, unless you fit the RAID in the blue slot and the gfx cards in the black slots....my understanding is that that gfx cards should be inserted into the blue and white slots though (they are the only 16x wired slots)?

Board is wired 16/0/4/0 or 8/8/4/8 top to bottom - blue/black/white/black.

Unless I'm mistaken there are no boards that run dual 16x when both slots are occupied, it just means both slots are capable of it. So the P5W-DH will run 8x/8x when in Crossfire, and so will this board.

It has been confirmed elsewhere that Crossfire can be done on 1+4 or 2+4. If you used an X1900 card in the blue slot (1) and another in the bottom black slot (4) you'd have space to fit the Areca card or any other PCI-e card in the white slot. It would only run at 4x though, but reviews seem to show it doesn't make a huge difference running at 4x or 8x.

I have been testing a P5WDG2 WS Pro, and if I set it to anything higher than 1.50 or 1.55 (can't remember which), CPU-Z reports the voltage as 1.2x volts!!!
I just assumed this was an error in CPU-Z, because I am quite sure that the ASUS utility reported it as being close to accurate. Could this be true, or is it just a software bug?

This isn't limited to Asus mobos. This happens on pretty much all C2D capable boards available at the mo :)

It's just a CPU-Z error, I don't know why but I don't think it's a big issue. I use BIOS hardware monitor or the Ai Booster readout (they match). Anyone with a DMM have any actual readings?

From memory, the manual on the P5WDG2 WS Pro states that the second PCI-Ex slot runs at 8x only, whether you have a card in the first slot or not. In SLI/CF both run at 8x.
Unsure whether it's the same with the P5W64 Pro though.

Also, I think there were some AMD boards that ran dual 16x in SLI but with no major performance gain.
