well, seems Mushkin just got a nice new set of ram out, if you can possibly find a way to use all that ram. :D

Looks like all is going according to plan.

I agree it'd sure be nice to see at least PC2-6400 before any games start needing more than 2gb to not choke. Hopefully Samsung/Micron put out some dram out in the foreseeable future on a smaller transistor process (arn't they both already using 40-50nm for flash?) and we'll see lower prices and higher densities and/or speeds going forward into the 64-bit future.

TwinMOS has 2 GB PC2-4200 sticks, and markings suggest its using 3.7ns chips. So there is a chance it will overclock to PC2-5300 with some overvolting. That speed would be sufficient for C2D systems!

There was a time you didn't need 2GB, and could run 4x512MB instead of 2x1GB at faster speeds. The same for 1GB and 256MB sticks instead of using 512mb sticks. Sure, in the old days on AMD you'd be screwed from 1T to 2T, but that's besides the point.

As densities increase and there is more ram per stick, the faster the standard changes. As we usher in 2GB sticks, the standard will change from 1GB standard, 2GB enthusiast, 4GB for the hardcore to 2GB standard, 4GB enthusiast and 8GB for the cutting-edge dude that runs a 64-bit OS.

I think this is what I'm going to do (I was eyeing some of these new 2GB models).

I'll just live with 4GB till the 2x2GB models mature.

Is overclocking 4x1GB more challenging than 2x1GB on a C2D platform (IIRC it was more challenging back in the AMD 939 DDR days).

I've already got my P5WDG2 WS Pro and an X6800 (and an E6300, E6400, E6700 to compare with) and 2 different 2x1GB kits.

Any suggestions on the 4x1GB kit? I've got the 2x1GB G.Skill HZ kit and the 2x1GB TeamXtreem 3-4-4-8 667C3 kit already.

I've gotta find time to play with these things!

seems like its not to hard to hit really nice speeds with good ram on 965/975, i mean 4 x 1g.

That's chips for ECC modules, so I doubt they will be used in kits we would buy anytime soon. Those would likely cost an arm and a leg...

Don't ECC modules usually scale slower than non-ecc modules though? If there is pc2-6200 RDIMMs, then non-registered can't be far behind. :)

That was just the dimm that Micron will make and yes you can use DDR2 ECC on your intel and AMD systems. If your motherboard dosen't support ECC, then the ECC part of the dimm will not be used but the dimm will work. ECC dimms have a extra mem IC on both sides that makes it ECC so you can make a dimm using the same memory ICs for a DDR2 2 gig dimm with out ECC.

I had no problem gaming on my 1gb kit. Needing more than 2gb of ram is a joke, nothing else...

Vista can burn in hell, Server 2003 > that.

no they can scale just as far, however they are statistically more likely to have a lower overclock. Because the speed of your ram is limited by the max speed of your slowest memory chip. Thus the more chips you have, the more likely you are to be held back by a chip. Ideally all you want is ONE IC on the stick for Overclocking but that isn't too practical this day and age.

You mix up ECC and registered. Different concepts, you can have one without the other, although buffered non-ECC is rare.

Scaling can be difficult with registered modules as the register chip is in danger of being overdriven. However, the socket 940 crowd does it reasonably well.

ECC modules have 9 chips and since the weakest chip hold the module back there's much chance of a limit. Also, when ECC is turned on it will halt your computer at double-bit errors, whereas the benchmarking kind of overclocker might actually want to continue.

The actual memory chips on all the modules are the same. Registered and/or ECC uses the same chips, just in a different configuration. So nonregistered versions of this scan't be far behind.

6 months till 4gb standard?? Don't think so.. I've been running 2x512MB RAM for the last 24! months, and only now switching to 2x1GB.. And I like to consider myself somewhat an enthusiast... RAM is pretty much like CPUs: In gaming they take secondplace, behind a good GFX (to a certain point of course) :)

well as you know there are memory intensive applications. such as Fear, BF2 and the like, but what modern gamers sometimes forget is that MOST games DON"T have Memory cleaning portions in their code and just like Firefox 1.5
Their ram use will explode and get bigger till the application crashes.
And the 4GB limit (actually 3.2GB) is the only thing these days from us seeing insanely high memory usage.

A crappy game like BF2 today requiers 2GB of RAM so that it can run smoothly. With Vista needing a 1 GB to it self and games needing 2GB, 4GB seems perfect, unless offcourse you dont mind cheap system of caching on HD.

i'm sure if the programers had their way the entire installation of both the os and game/apps, would be stored in the ram.

First of all Windows XP Home/Pro with SP2 can't see more than 3.2GB.
Also there is always a possibility of problems during o/c cause many memory controllers can't handle overclocking four modules at once.

There is not even one mainstream application or game which can utilize 4gigs NOT EVEN ONE.
Only some 3D renderings or heavy some Photoshop tasks can use so much memory.

4gigs won't ever became necessary in the near future,companies create them for ignorant gamers who think that 4gigs will give them a hole new experience in gaming (many of you belong to this group).

If you upgrade your system from 2 to 4 gigs you will not understand even a tiny difference at 90% of the applications you're running.

So until Vista/dx10 and next generation games release,4gigs is tottally uselless.

Why is a 32-bit architecture limited to 4 gigabytes of memory?

Before answering that, it is important to distinguish between memory address space and physical memory.

Each byte of memory in a computer must have a unique address so that applications can keep track of and identify the memory. In a 32-bit computer, the memory addresses are 32 bits long and stored as binary (base 2) numbers. There are approximately 4 billion possible different 32-bit binary numbers (2 raised to the 32nd power is 4,294,967,296). The amount of physical memory on the computer is not related to the amount of memory address space. If a computer has 256 megabytes of physical memory, there is still a 4 gigabyte memory address space. as for needing 4gb, i still dont believe you need 2gb, im running 2x512 bh-5 still and i run oblivion with every high res texture mod i could find. Not that i wouldnt see performance jump with 2gb, but everyone talks about 2gb of ram as if you are crazy if you dont have it, which imo isnt the case.

Even if applications don't clean up, if they don't touch the old pages anymore they will be dropped (if readonly file-backed) or moved to the paging area. So they don't need more physical memory.

The limit these applications hit is the 2/3/4 GB (depending on OS) virtual memory limit. There's no OS with a 3.2 GB limit, I think you mistake that for what XP SP2 (after they broke PAE) does (with physical memory, virtual is 3 GB).

It is incorrect to state that Firefox doesn't clean up it's memory. It just caches a whole freaggin lot and it does rely on what I state in my first paragraph. It doesn't hurt as long as paging works OK.

It's pretty common even for good programmers to mix up physical and virtual memory. As a rule of thumb, the more somebody knows about algorithms the less they know about memory management.
