Guide: The Art of Soldering
-
Perfect timing, I'm getting ready to start a large project and although I've soldered before, I'm not comfortable with it at all. Hopefully this will help.
Great Yob!
Thanks :)

wow very nice, im not bad with an iron and i do some stuff my own way but this is definetly go to help me alot.
-
-
I wanted some info on how to solder on the very tiny legs of an ic like the one you have in the pic with the name THE SENSITIVES
-
-
WOW...mass props to our brother from the frozen north--killer work man.
-
Excellent Guide!
So you make heatpipes eh...?
-
Man, was i so afraid of soldering until i saw this!
You really put me in the mood of vmoding all my components now!
Amazing Job!
-
awsome mate i was searching for lots of info on this an solved most of my doubts i'll keep reading
-
cant thank you enough, just started my voltmodding quests and must say really good guide :D
-
whoa, that was a lot of work, thnx a lot. i'm looking to start my first project and this helped me a big step forward :D :woot:
-
-
how would you solder something such as a variable resistor in or something to that nature? jw. I've looked through the guide before sry if I missed it now.
because supposedly the pencil mod for the X1900gt rev2 only works for around 2 mins before the graphite either comes off or something.

-
I just noticed this, awesome work Thrilla! :)
-
Thanks a lot m8 just burned a hole in my motherboard......only kidding, very nice guide
-
kick ass thrilla, tought me a few new tricks ;) Liking the site now!
-
Super guide, Thnx :) my soldering was a bit outdated :)
-
Very nice guide Thrilla. This is just what I needed to find before starting to do Vmods
-
Great write-ups and pictures, thank you :)!
-
-
Nice guide! Usefull info...
When soldering a hole mount I would stick the legs of the component through the holes and then bend the legs a little, so the component doesn't fall out.
That's the only thing that came to my mind, your guide pretty much covers it all :toast:
-
Good guide, and good read.
Me and my Weller WR 3M loved it very much :)
-
great guide , i have soldered alittle but my main problem is how to know what parts to buy and where to buy them so i can get all the right parts the first time. thanks
-
-
This guide helped me a lot with my soldering, thanks!:toast:
-
hey thanks for this guide.
-
Looks like an awesome guide, I am going to read this for sure tomorrow. Thanks for taking the time and doing this for the soldering noobs :)
-
Just a heads up:
I'm canceling my web hosting service with yahoo small business since the site is pretty much dead (but still cost me $14 a month). I will redo the links ASAP and move it to a free web host. Sorry about the downtime.
-
-
It's back =P
Thanks for your patience and sorry about the down time, took me a while to find a good and free web host.
-
Thanks for the info mate.

I thought I might add (since I don't see it here anywhere) that using a tinning pad and tinning your soldering iron is essential to getting your solder to stick.
Without one, soldering can seem difficult, frustrating, and just plain hard.
When you properly clean and tin the tip of your iron, it is much, much easier.

Thank you VERY much with this guide. Being a "thrice a year" solderer, it really helps to have a handy reference guide like this.
-
Thanks for the guide: I've never soldered in my life, so this is good to have.
-
Everyone looking for a good soldering iron for fine soldering should look no further than the Aoyue 936: https://store.sra-solder.com/product.php?xProd=6144
I bought one recently and it's really great for it's price. It is a good idea to buy a fine 0.2mm soldering tip with it ;)

This guide is an awesome place to learn about soldering. Coming from someone with no soldering experience who is looking to learn about the technique (or art as some people have made it), I must say this is informative and comprehensive. Great job!!!!
-
I always wanted to do some vmods to get the most of my computer, and now when i have been reading this guide. I'm feeling secure starting!
Amazing guide thanks!

I wish I read this thread a while back...would have saved me a lot of headaches.
But it's never too late to learn to do things properly. Thanks :)

Nice guide. Here's another guide I found a couple years ago that's basically about how not to solder. It's written about some failed Xbox mod attempts, but some of the things can be applicable in other areas as well.

Lolz , ahhh the art of soldering, ive modded 2 Nintendo Wii's nerly borked one , one of the little metal pads i needed to solder a leg to came off so i was forced to trace the track back the the chip and scrape the track back and solder and see if it connected with my multi meter it did miracousley
-
props for the guide  (thread resurrection FTW)
this is a good tip heheh

A finished joint should be clean and away from other legs, no excessive solder should be seen. This process needs precision and it's tough to re-do it, so be extra careful and finish it all at once. If you have shaky hands, clap, one strong clap is all you need, this reduce some of the shakiness (thanks to InSanCen at XS for this tip). After the joint cools and cures, you may secure the wire into place somehow, but it is NOT recommended to insulate the joint because removal will be very tough, as long as the wire is secure into place, the joint will not be touching anything or fall apart. Solder is used to make electrical connections but not mechanical joints, so secure the wire with something durable.

This was really helpful. Thankyou!

One Question : can you solder 2 copper plates together? and have non-corrosion + adequate thermal transfer? Milling is not an option for me
-
I think if you fluxed them both and used silver solder and a torch you may be able to get that to happen
Like the guide :) Great layout
-
do it have to use hard soldering? coz i'm a noob in those
i just able to soft solderings .. i've spoken to quite a lot ppl .. they mention around 30% efficiency of thermal transfer compared to the milling which is 100%
does it worth it? but it's much more easier that way (headaches)

Issue there is warping with the heat involved on two such comparatively large surfaces... It could be done, but controlling the deformation would be tricky. You're moving from electrical soldering into mechanical (?) soldering there... then you've got maintaining the pressure of the two plates against each other while you solder... where the clamps would be, or vertical load weight, would affect the heat dispersion and thus the thermal quality of the bond...
S'doable, but guaranteeing performance of the end product becomes difficult.

So it isn't computer related, but it is soldering related. I'm trying to solder a ring terminal to 4gauge wiring, but it is a real PITA. Am I correct in guessing that I should crimp to the best of my abilities (don't have an actual crimper) then use a torch to heat the area up and feed the solder in, or is there a better way? I have some soldering experience, but nothing on wire this thick. The electrician in me wants to do it by myself, and the cautious person in me wants to stop by the electrical shop near my house and have them do perform this.

Great guide!!! I absolutely needed this, I am about to embark on a pretty wild little project :)
-
thanks for the great guide!!
-
Thanks mate gonna keep this for later reference, might try a few mods on some old cards!
-
wow good guide. I solder a lot myself and this is a good refresh for me.

dudes I am about to get this. http://www.amazon.com/Jumbo-Helping-.../dp/B001U8XVOS
my eyes get strained so badly. Anyone else like to share similar rigs to keep your hands free and bright and magnified?
