A friend of mine that sells dell parts and bare bones (Dell case, PSU, motherboard) just got a new barebone today. He was clue less about it becase It didn't have a Intel chipset on it. I took a quick look and it was a BTX micro mobo using a RS600/SB600 chipset on it. This new Dell line up should be out very soon. This one was the lowest model the 320.
Dell has RS/RD600 before us :mad: !!!

woot. i'd much rather have the early yeilds go to the oem's first then retail.
let the tools and manufactering breakin a bit. If dell is getting it, then that means we should be seeing some reviews/retails version comming out soon.

One thing that was strange was there was no heatsink on the south brige SB600. It was bare flipchip.:confused:
You mean that there wasn't even a plastic cap on the chip? A bare chip in other words..
SBs without heatsinks are not really uncomon incase you mean that.
Its pretty rare that they have just plain old exposed silicon.. In laptops they do that, but there is always a metal subframe of the laptop chassis that hits the core so that its heat gets distributed through the case.Quote:

I know from internal sources that DFI will be the ONLY manufacturer making a RD600 board.
This will cause a HUGE markup, MSRP should be around ~$250USD but expect it to be more like $300USD online and will probably stay that way for a long time. RD600 is a cheap chipset too, designed for ~$175 boards, but because ATi won't be offering much support, all the other manufacturers backed off.
If I had the money and lived in Taiwan, I'd buy all the DFI stock I could....
I am not so sure if an enthousiast board like that will make much of an inpact on thier stock pricing, it's only a very small market.
^^^ i'd be more interested in the manufacter of a new type of cap being used in boards as opposed to a company putting out a product using an exclusive product.
unless it was slated to change the entire industry...

but yeah, dfi could make a killing if they play this right. if not, i'm gonna break down and cry since this is the board iv'e been waiting for.

They probably are by a small margin. I always found it a little funny that ATI makes very hot GPUs but has cool chipsets, while nV makes (relativly) cool GPUs and the hottest chipsets.
965 are much hotter than Nvidia chips. I never burned my finger by touching a heatsink on the Nvidia NB. I got burned by touching the top fin of the Chipforce cooler on the 965 NB.

Dell's board is RS600 which has intergrated graphics, meant for the mainstream market. NOT the RD600 which is meant for high end.
As for ECS RD600, I've never seen or heard of it, I'm guessing it was probably a RS600 and even if it was an RD600 - who cares? As if an ECS board will be overclocker friendly.....
All the major enthusiast board players are out of the game: Abit, Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, none of them will touch the RD600.
I'm guessing that there probably won't be many (if any at all) driver updates for the RD600 chipset either, considering how slow Catalyst driver updates are compared to nVidia. Also, if DFI is the only one buying that chipset (and DFI's market share is miniscule compared to Asus and the other big players) why would ATi waste precious man power developing the drivers?
Of course, if the RS600 does well on the OEM side and if the same drivers could be used on the RD600, then end users would be able to catch a break.
RD600 looked very promising, but the AMD buyout sort of ended it's life prematurely. Maybe that was 1 of the incentives AMD had for buying ATi at this time.

It's the southbridge and I have never seen a bare SB, because there usually is some sort of pastic cap on it, so it might just be an average chip for SB standards or have you seen any bare SB chips?Quote:

It is the SB600 and dosen't run hot ether. This is Dells lowest end system using RS600. There are going to be much more powerful system based on ATI chipsets at the same time the Optiplex 320 will go to sale. The onboard graphics is a X700LE with AVIVO in the north bridge. This chipset supports HDMI but the mobo maker must add the HDMI port.Quote:

accoring to Andre RD600 boards have sh1thouse RAM performance and he reckons that price will be the key selling feature so unless you have a better source i don't think they'll be jacking anything up any time soonQuote:
