Scythe Infinity kicks Big Typhoon hard, pics, tests by me

Ordered this beauty for some testing :) This cooler is pretty much amazing, I won't write a lot just a summary and pics. I overclocked allendale to 3.2Ghz and used 1.55V on purpose

Pros:
* Superb performance, the best air cooler no doubt
* Can mount different fans (more powerfull :D), even 2 of them
* quiet at 1200rpm and totally silent at <800rpm
* Fits most sockets

Cons:
* I don't like s775 installation, it is the same as for boxed cooler
* Might not fit some MBs or cases because of the size (will fit with some modding maybe)

Shouldnt your fan be on the otherside and pushing air up through it? Or do you not case mount.

I wonder if this thing will mount on my ultra D without hitting anything?

Looks amazing. I was impressed with the BT but this beats it easily! Looks like it'd be great to pair up with a P180 since it'll point up. Is it only able to mount in one direction?

if that data is accurate then il dump my TT-BT for that thing

it beating tt-bt is no big supprise as the HS is about 2x larger overall and has 4 more heatpipes and weighs more than a gundam mobile suit

Anyway, back on topic...that's an amzing looking cooler and from what I've heard, it's great, but your testing is kind of inconclusive. You don't give info on ambeint temp, the amount of time you ran tests, what tests you ran, what thermal paste you used, fan CFM, etc. All of these things can make a big difference. As it is now, this thread is more or less pointless to us. Sure it's nice to show off your new heatsink, but if you're going to present thermal comparisons like you did, at least make the testing conclusive and give us ALL the info.

Well its massive so it should beat all other coolers, anyhow run it in a case and give us temps.

I tried to make identical conditions:
Ambient was 26C, default fans, AS ceramique, tested occt + orthos for 20 mins :)

I can't measure it now but if you have tall caps (more than 12mm or so) around socket area it won't normally fit. It was very close on gigabyte DS3.


No Icer we can't compare different systems even if you are running same voltage and speed.


Well, pretty clear that it is better, even cpu fsb wall increased by 3fsb, stable oc maybe too (As you know cooling helps fsb wall) :p: Powerfull fan + lapping even better

kiwi, you should have used the same fan, otherwise it doesn't show much. But the cooler looks really great.. maybe i'll get one of these if they are much better even with the same fan.

my Scythe Infinity arrived this morning, I can confirm that the mounting mechanism for the socket 939 setup is simply a pair of clips that mount onto the stock heatsink bracket. IMHO its quite flimsy, but I hope to prove myself wrong with real-world testing.

The Scythe infinity fan is a .13 amp "silenct" fan with the model number AD1212DS-A73GL(6TCL3).

On a DFI RS-482 Infinity motherboard, theres less than 1mm of clearance in some areas (memory sockets /w heatspreaders), though it DOES fit with a fan pushing upwards towards the blowhole.

FYI to whoever decides to buy one of these coolers.

It will hit the black caps(or w/e they are) around the socket on the Asus P5W DH. You have to either A.) mount it diffrently or B.) grind a few mm off the bottom of the heatsink.

Yeah, if you don't mind, use the same fan on each and report back. That way, no one can question the validity of your results. As we all know, the CFM/RPM reported by the manufacturer's can be over/understated.

I don't think so drtitanium0. Reason begin, if you look at the image below, i beleive the part that is hitting on my board will set inside the mounting bracket. i.e the yellow peice. What will hang over will clear anything around the socket.

I loved the BT - I bought a Ninja and tried to install it onto a DFI Lanparty NF4 Ultra-d while in a case. Just wasn't happening. The Ninja is stupid big, I ended up selling it cause I didnt wanna yank the board to install a heatsink.

Personally I feel it's too big and difficult to mount inside a Case, as well it prolly won't work on alot of mobos... the BT is much easier to work with.

Well if the ninja didn't fit how is the infinity going to fit?

dude, lets just order a big typhoon. Not only are the easier to install, you can pretty much fit it on any board including your future builds.

If you get an infinity you might not be able to move it to your next build do to size restraints...

Buy both or just buy the infinity and try it out, if you don't like it then just return it.

I dunno, I found the BT to be pretty difficult to install using the stock bolts. I had to use compression springs with bolts and wingnuts for me to get a good mount on my old X2.

Big Typhoon Zillion times already :D Well, at least 5 times with this setup (using wingnuts), Infinity 2 times so far. Heatsink contact is always excellent :)

just ordered an infinity vs. my old plan of getting an SI 128 and a silverstone fan...

google helped me locate the infinity as the first link was to scythes site and scythe advised several sites.

i ordered from coolerguys(subdivision of Yahoo! from what I see) as they had it going at a reasonable price and shipped to CA without the blasted 7.75% sales tax. Saved myself about 15$ overall here...

yeah seems like a pretty good one but we know that Tuniq is the best and proper comparisons between Tuniq and TTBT have received not such a big difference..........TTBT also benefits enourmously form a really high pressure fan for benching................:)

A good fan makes alot of difference with the BT!

looks like it should be OK, case is 8in(200mm approx) deep and the HSF is 160nm(6.3in approx) cutting it somewhat close, but there is still ample room to spare. I recall space being an issue in the use of the T Tower 120s...

Did you not bother reading my post, I clearly said that my rig WOULD NOT RUN with the slow or small fan, and IT WORKED FINE with a larger one...

That is a rather crazy difference.

If you are not putting a huge load on it, I dont dobut that you will see mediocre results, but with a real big heatload, a high pressure, high CFM fan DOES SOMETHING

Will you notice a differernce at 1.3v? no.

There can be for two reasons
1) The infinity has a lot more surface area and more heatpipes
2) I've heard the BT has a pretty rough contact surface so if he didn't lap it and the infinity has a much better surface then that can affect temps as well

or both reasons could be true.

He did say the temp sensor he was using - check the first pic, it says CoreTemp and EasyTune for the two programs he used to check with (and we all know that CoreTemp is gonna be alot more accurate).

10 heatpipes vs 6 heatpipes is not a fair comparison.
Plus, the Infinity weights almost 1KG!
Anyways, looks like the Infinity might be the best cooler of the year! ;)

That wasn't the case for me. Mine ran cooler by 4-5c under load when switching from the stock fan to a 114 CFM fan. This was with a Smithfield. I did become a bit more deaf in the process, though.

Firstly fhpchris I wasnt even talking to you, secondly I run 2.75gig or 2.8gig (depends on FSB) with 1.825v or 1.875v for later, so you trying to tell me my socket A barton mobile is cool running anyhow ?.

Mad high fan on my BT for me gains little drop in temps for a big gain in noise which aint worth it as im only 43c idle in room temp of 22c and load always under 55c priming sometimes as low as 46c.

I feel some of you havent mounted the TT-BT 100%, I know for a fact mines aint and its kinda slack and mobos bending (on mobo side before cooler fitted to standoffs) as them bolts they supply are to thin, but it was 2am and I was desperate to try it out lol.

Dude, thats single core. Do not even try to compare that to a CCB2E Dual core FX at 1.6v+.

I owned a socket A rig, and many people here ran over 2v on them. 1.9v on socket A isnt a large load.


The stock typhoon mount is complete crap, and it is VERY hard to get a rock solid mount without a heatspreader.

The typhoon gains from high pressure fans because the fin density is like double of the infinity...

2C difference is a LOT from different fans.........that would mean the difference between passing 1M 20-30MHz......as a bencher you are always fighting for every last MHz...


for 24/7 it doesn't really matter as you'll drop MHz and noise to whatever the confortable level is....i'm talking about benching here

The clips are stronger than they look, but I still definitely wouldnt dare try and moving the thing unless it was on its side the whole time. Installation required sanding down of the stock northbridge heatsink (the mounting mechanism collided with the retention bracket when being tightened, but not during normal usage), and a pair of neeldenose pliers to reach the cabling. Otherwise, no serious problems.

31c idle, 37c load, 25c ambient, with a silverstone 120mm fan @ 1000rpms, and 2 scythe 60cfm fans pulling air through it as case fans, ala an antec p180b.

Are the heatpipes making real good contact with the base? I can't find any good pictures of that..

I finally topped out the TTBTs performance with the sidewinder delta 120x76 counterrotating fan. At 2x1600rpms or above I get no more performance benefit.

Personally, I think that companies should produce high performance high density heatsinks for folks like me who are fine with a 120mm fan at 1600rpms.

What is it like just on air cooling? meaning no fan.

I remember that the temps between idle and load are not that different on core 2 duo , well it was very much like that with the Freezer pro iused for a E6300 at 2.76 ghz , idle 39 and load 43c

You must have got a special edition freezer pro. With my freezer pro I get 59 degrees for a dual prime load temp. That is with my e6400 at 2.67 ghz.

you better get use to die shrinkage and heat increase , they are going to get bigger. Also @adamant is that true? I had a sharkoon copper HSF before the freezer pro and that sounds more like the temps your getting, is yours mounted properly , this is weird. ALso does your fins feel hot , all i can feel on mine is its cold , really cold.

I haven't tried touching the fins to see how they feel. I have remounted it and the temps remain the same. The discrepancy in the temps could be what program the individual uses to monitor the temps. I use Intel's IDCC. At idle I stay in the mid 40's but I don't have my fan running full blast all the time, the fan only kicks up speed when needed. At idle my fan is running around 700 rpm's and at load it goes up to around 2000 rpm's.

Die shrink doesnt always mean more heat, your thinking cause there is less surface area to contact heatsink, well the die shrink is done and they run with less volts than previous gen cpus, that how it works, the amd64 now dont run as hot as old thunderbirds, cause they use far less volts than 1.75v.

Obv all this is at stock overclocking is up to the user not the maker of new cpu's, but as its got less volts to start out with you do get more headroom.

I think we all know new amd cpus even bartons (keeping with same 32bit) overclocked far better than old thunderbirds.

Yes it's large and heavy but most of the weight is in the base.
I wouldn't drag is around to LAN parties or ship the system with this HSF installed.

However it'll be fine for normal use. The push pin mounting system is excellent but it can be unforgiving. The instructions must be followed exactly and forget about any chance of installation/removal installed in a case.

The push pin heads must be armed in the lock position. The push pins must the pulled out as far out as possible. Then you need to push in opposite corners until they click (ie lock). Now do the other 2 opposite corners. Now turn the MB over and make sure all 4 black pins have gone all the way thru their cylinder.
(for a P5W DH make sure you clear the square black IC's directly above the socket). Remove about 1 mm from the extrusion until the edge is flush with the mounting bar.

now im wondering whether or not to buy a Scythe Infinity... i heard theyre really hard to install

Hard???

It's the easiest mounting system out there. It can be done in less then 60 seconds.

However modifications might be needed on Asus MB's for clearance.

What about the new Thermalright SI-128? If you like that style of coolers that is.

Yeh sorry, ordered an Infinity. Should be my house tomorrow and i'll see how it compares to the XP90c

SPCR's review of the infinity actually places it quite far behind scythe's own ninja(4 deg C at 12v). And therefore considerably behind the thermalright ultra-120 also(which is a further 3 deg C below the ninja at 12v).

Re SPCR : The Scythe Infinity gets reviewed not long after its released.....and to my amazement and disbelief, there still is no review of the Thermaltake Big Typhoon at SPCR....wtf?

The Infinity fits my Ultra D. You can't use it w/o an IHS though. It won't make contact w/ a bare core. At least not w/ DFI's socket thing. I had to put my IHS back on. Idle temps are around 35C and it's right at 50C under dual prime according to A64Info. 48C according to Smart Guardian. 320x9 w/ 1.45 vcore. I'm using a Yate Loon fan.
Mounting it isn't so bad even w/ the mobo inside the case. There's just little room between the fins and the mosfte heatsinks. Barely enough to wiggle your finger around and pull the lever. Maybe a screwdriver would work best for those w/ fat fingers.
Too bad it only came w/ 2 fan mounts. Only enough for 1 fan. I was gonna check it out using 2 fans. Anyone know where I can get another set of fan mounts?

Well just hooked mine up to my Ultra D. Mounting it was easier then my XP90c. Fits excellent. So far pretty good, nice and quiet.

I finally topped out the TTBTs performance with the sidewinder delta 120x76 counterrotating fan. At 2x1600rpms or above I get no more performance benefit.

Personally, I think that companies should produce high performance high density heatsinks for folks like me who are fine with a 120mm fan at 1600rpms.

I bought it yesterday, its really awesome. at 325*9@1.32V under Freezer64 i got 40/53 idle/load
now 33/43 with 120mm fan at 4V

I'd personally like everyone to read this quoted post B4 you get the Scythe Infinity or any other cooler. I have a Thermaltake Big Typhoon VX and what Navig's states seems real. I personally think the thread title "Scythe Infinity kicks Big Typhoon hard, pics, tests by me" should be changed! The the original post from "kiwi" may have truly been "his" personal experience but I think the BT's temps he posted seem too high.

EDIT: BTW, I'm not saying the Scythe Infinity isn't a decent coooler, I'm just stating not to base your descision from this thread.

mine keeps my conroe at 35C idle via ITE smart guardian(37C core temp) @ 3.07GHz w/ 1.325V. don't knwo if that is necessarily all THAT great but it seems acceptable to me. load is 54C on Core temp, 59C on ITE.

With the same ~105CFM fan, my Infinity beat my TTBT by ~7-14C, depending on OC/volts/load (difference increased with a higher load [like max volts on a P5W DH and dual load at 3.85GHz :D]). Mounting is amazing too....provides a perfect amount of pressure (put one SMALL little dab of AS5 on the center of the core and when I uninstalled it, it was a perfect spread (and practically all squished off the side of the IHS) and is very easy to mount with the like-stock push-pins (though I did have to wipe some blood off the HSF edges).

Can't wait to get mine!

Only if you set it up right, youve got to close up all the air pockets so the air only moves over the fins, and then a nice 35mm fan makes the BT into a monster. I am right there with you, a lapped BT with high pressure gained me around 5c. Anyone who says high pressure doesnt make a difference simply isnt doing it right, or they dont have enough heatload, on low heat cpu's there isnt really alot of room for temp drops that a high cfm fan would bring. But with 1.8v into my 146 this high cfm really makes a difference.

How about a close encounter with a Tuniq Tower? I bet it would be close.

Whatever - iwould not not rely on only 1 review. The Infinity is far better than my oldie TTBT - thats what most Reviews say, too.

Can the Infinity be mounted the other way on a DS3 so that the fan is pointing towards the rear exhaust of a case?

Yeah, fan can be mounted on any of 4 sides :toast:
