MSI 975X Platinum PowerUP + Conroe

I'm not a fan of starting similar threads that waste space and/or duplicate info. After reviewing pages of the original MSI 975X thread, it's clear that Conroe issues with this board aren't reflected if you're not running a conroe processor. :) :)

Additionally I'm not certain that this thread will have a long life as the current bios issues may just encourage most users to spend a few hours testing and return the product to the supplier, or as I have done, put it on the shelf to see if MSI can fix it...

Two hours of prime at 400 fsb @ 1.4 w/ 6300 is rock solid. Room temp still 83F with a tower 120.

You were right that once it's set it's a solid board. I have a fan on the memory so some of it blows on the nb. Checked it just before stopping prime and it wasn't even warm. There must not be much juice to it. I got a Tt spirit ll but it isn't worth putting on.

The real question is will MSI be quick on a new bios or be like they have in the past. There are some good things about the board and the fact that Kentsfield seemed to do well on it is a +.

That said this is not a $200+ board. I was lucky and got one of the $179 shipped ones from Ewiz. They will have to make some major improvements to the bios for it to be a $200 mb.

You are right on that any cpu other then Conroe doesn't mean a thing about what a Conroe will do on it.

Man, this is the only board that matches my requirements for layout, features etc... why does it have to suck :mad:

What cpu were you going to use? If they get on the stick and get a new bios out it won't be a bad board.

Conroe E6600 with some OCZ PC2-6400 Platinum XTC (already got this). I'm still clinging on to hope for this board, but from what I hear MSI ain't great with BIOS releases :(

Id say give it a whirl before you form a conclusion, i dont feel the limited response thus far paints a true picture. Using the base 975X chipset will enable MSI to imitate other manufactuars parameters when updating bios codes imo. After a while nearly all 975X will behave the same when bios's have matured imo again :) .....or wishfull thinking :slap:

Why don't you buy one? That's poorest answer I've heard today. I didn't want to judge the board before I tried it so I didn't. Now that I got it I can say it will wear you out if you want to oc with it. I thought the Gigabyte boards I had we bad but at least they kept giving out new bios quickly. If either one of the Giga boards would have worked for me I would not have been with this one. I was smart enough to send back tha Abit board when I saw it wasn't any good.

I'm talking about basic things that should have been fixed before putting it out. You have to power off or it won't reboot after going into the bios. If you load something that requires a reboot, it turns off and powers back on but nothing. Fans spin but that's it. F1 has to be hit everytime to boot. Stuff like that.

It's easy to tell someone just try it when you don't have to fight it yourself.

Yes, thanx Nick;) Oh, and about my fsb reset..I was talking to my wife tonight and she mentioned using the PC that morning and when it was powered on it just hanged. She left and when i found it the board had reset itself back to default FSB. I later found that using a 4:5 ratio above 360fsb causes the board to hang. Furthermore if I use less than 2.2 volts on my memory I get a system hang as well running 900mgz. To clearify the boot hang, you can set FSB to 360, reboot and be fine, it's when you power off and power back on you get the hang. However using a 1 to 1 ratio I have yet to see the limits of the fsb as my cpu will not boot stable over 3.9 ghz. Without something to change multi (I have to play with clockgen and cpuid) I have no way of finding the boards max fsb. The vcore adjust screen shows .2-.3 higher than actual vcore, so say you set to 1.53 you actually get 1.51. I'm starting to understand this board more and more, hell i may keep it since 3.6ghz and 900mhz memory speed is more than I thought i would get out of any stable gaming rig.

Yeah I hope more people keep teh board. They must understand it's a brand new board (2 weeks its been out about.) I'm sure they're working on new BIOS' like nuts @ MSI. Give them some time ;).

There really is no perfect Conroe board out yet, but what if this ends up being teh board to have when a few more BIOS' come out? Don't sell it yet or you may regret it.

This board was looking to be a real winner too. Sorry to hear about the let down there PCDoc.. perhaps NV and ATI have something better to offer us in the coming weeks.

Oh yeah I totally get this, but the general concensus seems to be that MSI are painfully slow with BIOS updates (if they ever some out at all), and that seriously dampens my hope! :(

I tried flashing to the 711 bios, and the system froze, now it won't even post. I did a little searching and found this:

I just used winflash and it worked great. I haven't used a floppy to flash in years.

Maybe NV, I'm not as confident as others here on the ATI… I’m currently running A8R32-MVP on the AMD side and it’s fine but never has measured up to all the hoopla surrounding it. Nvidia is clearly the right choice on that side… IMO

Of course we haven’t seen and real challenges to Intel chipsets so I’m thinking we’re just have to wait for these bios issues to get resolved. With that said, I’d surely welcome a solid alternative…

None... Shipping bios sucks, 7.11 fixes very little... If you can even find 7.14 and it fixes current issues, it probably doesn't fix "The Limited Feature Set" so what's the point? Well lets hope we get some better boards down the road. Its been a long time since i went to Intel.. The time i decide to go, its nothing but problems on the motherboard end. :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:en processor, complete trash for boards. Im sort of speechless.

Im going to try to locate a Biostar Tforce in the meantime until something better from NV or ATI hits us.

I have some connections @MSI... will try to do something tomorrow :)

I recently got some "special" BIOS for the K9N-SLI and It had more options like NB voltage... the original one doesn't... will see to it tomorrow :)

It was sure rotten for a mod on MSI forums to post he has a new bios and pm him for it and then disappear for the weekend.:(

pcdoc, the good thing is there is only one way to go, up. I don't think that it will get worse. I'm just thankful that nothing else is sold like motherboards where you buy something that does not work right and your suppose to wait quietly for them to fix what is wrong and be happy about it.

I guess if there is one statement that gets me it's: it new tech and it takes time to get the problems sorted out. Why did they send it out if the finished product was not right. I can see where there maybe some compatabilty problems that needs to have a fix but nothing like this.

You ARE and AREN'T right about that at the same time... why... because @MSI they test it with limited hardware... "limited", because they simpla cannot recreate every single end user configuration, that all those people will make... and one more think - why people think, that the board should make at least 400FSB and that IS a problem? Nobody garantees that.... not even ASUS, Gigabyte, Abit.... no body...

So that's why new boards most of the times do have bios problems... that's why we have bios updates... because it's never perfect... can't be... and It's good, that those serious brands think about us and make bios updates... try to deal with the "not so good brands" and look how many bios/board problems they got and how frequently we got BIOS Updates...

The Big Brands need that customer feedback, that will help them make tha board better... so everything, that they couldn't simulate, we do... and thats why we got bios updates after that.... but that can't be done in a day or two... a BIOS update ain't that simple... I mean version, that is actually correcting all those reported problems :)

I got the 975X PE... and I like it... do not have problems besides the fact, that there's no multiplier option for the E6700ES and I'm stuck at 10x380... and under windows I cannot change the FSB... Dual Core Cell won't do it...

For now, that's my "problems" with the 975X PE :)

One more think - how do you people recognize the version? cuz mine here says Ver.7.0, 071206..... does that mean 712? :)

guys remember how a year+ ago the DFI Ultra-D series was out and everyone complained about that price, and that started the movement for the hiest end A64 boards to be around $200. but for 125 bucks that ultra-d just kicked the living crap out of every other amd board out there and still to this day is the best board to get.

Now the highest end Conroe boards are $275 and up. And they are some of the most craptacular boards i have ever seen.
my friggin $145 DS3 (unmodded) outclocks almost every highend board here(without mods), and it sure as hell clocked higher then the boards ive had thus far.

We are the consumer, we expect to get what we paid for, and ANY and i mean any god dang board whether its a 486 or friggin Itanium Server board, that costs as much as these pieces of sh|t do, that didnt just make you wet your pants with its performance and layout and features and add-ons.
well to not get that for as much as we are paying. that boys and girls is just straight poo.

but as long as you guys keep buying these high dollar boards and supporting these companies who consistantly put out crap, msi, abit, asus, they will keep doing it.
stop buying their stuff and maybe they will start producing better product.

im really burnt about this board, i was really hoping MSI would pull a great board out of their now checkered history.

Flashed.... rebooted.... no new options.... like Vmch or memory timings...

In the other thread someone reported better overclockability, so try that :).

It's a baby step. Before 400 fsb was prime stable now 410 is for sure. Tried 420 and it couldn't finish spi 1m. Didn't try anything in between 410 and 420 yet. DCC still isn't right. Look at 5v. Somethings are closer. Still no changing fsb in it. Bios reads right cache and fsb now. Haven't tried ide 2 yet. Nothing new in bios though.:(
Tomorrow I get my 6400 and will know more it it's the cpu or mb.

Well it looks like there's no reason to fire this board backup as it appears 714 doesn't fix crap... I agree with ya on the "new tech" stuff as all the people posting previews of these new boards gave us alot screenies, high clocks, record fsb shots and so on, too bad they didn't also share the grief involved... I appreciate the "First Look" stuff but maybe sharing a little of the bad with the good would better serve members...

I have gone as high as 1.7v.

For the 714 bios. Do I just Extract, copy to floppy, reboot with floppy in drive:confused: I don't no very much about setting up a floppy to flash a bios. On a DFI it was easy as you had no dos comands or anything. I hope someone helps me with this:stick:

Here's a link detailing the floppy way to flash. Some people use winflash successfullly, but that's how I screwed up my board. Make sure to set first boot device to drive A in the bios before you flash.

have you tried only running 2x512 yet? What brand of ram are you running. Can't help but think your ram is your limiting factor.

Okey used 2 hours trying to tune more fsb, no luck...

Used upp to 1,75 volt on pci-e, and 1.48 on cpu. Same stuff as befor, often it dosen't even start.
So some thing is realy holding it back on 360, everything over stops.
I guess i have to be hapy with 3250MhZ for now :)

MrNielsen, you are using 4 sticks of RAM? Maybe you are just pushing the memory control too hard with 4 sticks :(

I have only used winflash for years. I flashed this MSI bios 3 times with it.

There is a pretty hard wall at 400fsb. When the Conroe rig finishes 32m I will post some pictures. I got the 6400 and dropped it in at the same settings and am now doing spi32m at 400 x 8 @ 1.37v.

400fsb is prime stable with the 6300 at 7 x 400@ 1.35v for 10+ hrs. Will post ss.

Dual core center reports vcore @ 1.37 regardless of selecting auto or manually setting to anything up to “1.5” –

And the list goes on, I’m just out of time...

With that said: an E6700 with a minor vcore bump is prime stable @ 3.5 and does 1m PI in mid 14’s. So if you’re looking for an easy OC, this may be your board…

I have no problems manually setting my ram timings, both my Gskill HZ and TeamXtreem will do 4,4,4,8 2.1v up to 425, thats when the board craps out on me. Also if I leave the memory clock ratio on auto it boots ups at 4/5 and I think I've tested all the way up to 465 if I'm not mistaken. Will have to test again.

I have this motherboard sitting on the floor next to me, with a 6400 sitting in it with Corsair 6400C3s as well. But there is something stopping me, persuading me not to take out my old DFI ultra-D.

I am scared my computer won't reboot, or my USB ports won't work and a number of other things. I just can not make up my mind if I should put this new board in for testing or not?

Well for laughs it took 3 hard starts to get this to desktop. Only use 2.0 my Gskill 2x512 HZ. Note I only lasted about 10min before crash but atleast there's hope:toast:

You really have only two choices...

1 - If it's sitting on the floor next to you to , "Step" on it, and then send it back.
2 - Pick up a cheap video card and hardrive and start testing before you commit..

That's easy, set it on the box it came in and try it. Anymore I always set up a rig outside the case first, easier to do. Once you have it running good then put it in the case.:)

I have no problems manually setting my ram timings, both my Gskill HZ and TeamXtreem will do 4,4,4,8 2.1v up to 425, thats when the board craps out on me. Also if I leave the memory clock ratio on auto it boots ups at 4/5 and I think I've tested all the way up to 465 if I'm not mistaken. Will have to test again.

:confused: Is the 425 and way up to 465 with an 8x and can you do anything with it? The ss you did post is 380 x 8 at spi 1m which isn't a real test of being able to do anything.

Who the hell said anything about being stable at 465, re-read my post it crashed in 10min.:slapass: 475 is 4:5

My board maxes out around 419x8 1:1 with proper voltage. Anything in the 420's the board as a mind of its own. Now that being said just being able to boot up at 475 4:5 isn't to shabby. Prolly could get it stable around 460ish if I tried but the board runs alot better 1:1

We don't hear that word around here much anymore. It used to be that guys would call a high, just barely being able to save it to my pictures, a "suicide shot". We got away from that terminology.;)

Agreed. Haven't been in the loop for awhile, this Intel build is my first in about 9 months. My bad for not saying SS but I figured once you've read my post Xmembers would figure it out.

To be honest I'm glad I have a DS3 arriving soon. Need to find out what my cpu and ram can really do.

“Stable A” – 24 hours dual prime stable…
“Stable B” - 24 minutes dual prime stable…
“Stable C” - I don’t believe in Prime (as I couldn't pass it)…
“Stable D” - It blew up, but only prompted me for a repair install twice…
“Stable E” - I got two emails…
