got my retail E6600 on monday and plugged it on my Asus P5B Deluxe Wifi (0502 Bios) and started overclocking. At default voltage I only get about 2700 MHz and with a vcore 1.475 I get 2800 MHz. I tried higher speeds but after a few minutes dual prime the system simply restarts itself. Ram is 2x Aeneon 512 DDR2 667 Mhz 1:1. I thought I could at least get 333 FSB x 9 = 3000 MHz, but even with 1.575V there is no go. Are these retail Core 2 Duo really so bad?
Thanx! I think I have the latest bios installed. I tried setting the PCI-E to Auto or 100 MHz, but I don't think it makes a difference, since I only have an old PCI-Graphics-Card installed. I also tried to push the mch voltages a little. Perhaps here is someone with the same retail cpu board combination and likes to share his bios settings.

I am currently getting to grips with an E6300 and the P5B Deluxe, with 2Gb of G.Skill DDR2-667 (2GBLA kit) (should have gone for the HZ DDR2-800 set in retrospect!)
Anyway, I am currently on bios 0402 with a prime/memtest stable 320fsb.
If I go anywhere near 330fsb+ then I need to change the VDIMM from AUTO to at least 1.95v (which is +0.15 from the 1.8v stock)
I haven't had to change anything else at the moment (VCORE etc. all on AUTO, except locked PCI-E at 100 and PCI at 33.33)
This board currently has some issues I think with the various ram dividers and setting SPD manually. (unless it just doesn't like the G.Skill I have).
So, what is your RAM rated at volts wise ? My G.Skill is rated 1.8v to 2.0v.
What I dont understand is that if I have my fsb at stock (266) then I can change my RAM divider to 4:5 and run it at DDR2-667 with out any changes to the VDIMM. But if I move my fsb to 333 and set my RAM divider to 1:1 to also run at DDR2-667 I have to up the VDIMM ??
I can also run my sticks at DDR2-800 when I am sitting at the stock 266fsb, again without any VDIMM changes.
CPU-Z verifies the RAM working at 333 and then 400 (with 4:5 and 2:3 ratios).
Just doesnt make any sense ?

Well I get confused on some of the recommendations since the main posters are after numbers and may or may not be after long term stability.
its hard to know what is safe and not safe to turn off some times as far as 24/7 performance compared to one super pi and a reboot..
And a lot of things that are being turned off fall under another issue
turn this and that off...wait won't that hurt performance?
Yea we just turned a 6800 into a celeron but it will now do 500+ fsb.
Just my 2 cents on the bios settings
they as well as myself need to know what is smart to turn off
as in unneeded things that will help to oc without loosing major in another area

Good idea! My ram is rated at 1.8v. It's just simple Aeneon 667s DDR2 and I don't know how much juice they can handle. I'll give it a try. I still have my Crucial Ballistix 2 GB Kit (2,3V 890 MHz 4-4-4-12) in my work pc.

I don't want to break any records! My goal is to hit 3.0 - 3.2 Ghz 24/7 without any wild stuff. I'm just testing on a workbench using an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro and when everything is 24 hours dual prime stable I'll plug it in my work pc using my alphacool watercooler. I don't think temperature is an issue here. Coretemp reports a max of 56 degrees celsius while running dual prime on air.

I would go up in +.05 increments with the VDIMM and see how you get on. I wouldn't personally go over 2.0v with the RAM you have.
Memtest86+ is your friend, grab the .iso, burn a CD and use it as a basis for testing the stability of your memory at the different speeds/voltages you set before then going on to the other windows based stability tests.
Also, a wierd thing with my P5B is when I start oc'ing by a certain amount when I turn it on it starts for a few seconds, then powers down, then a few seconds later powers on again and is ok (it doesnt revert the settings or anything!). At first I thought it might be adjusting the boot/fsb strap, but this doesnt appear to be changing from the 1066 strap... Does this happen to you ?

that one is good, because of the 2.2 stock volts, u can raise it very high, like to 2.4 or 2.45 volts

Tried the new 0504 bios and set the multiplier down to 6 and tried to start the board with 333 Mhz and it doesn't boot at all! I think it has something to do with the rams, mainboard or the ram divider. Normally they should run 1:2 with 666 Mhz full in spec. I'll try later with my Crucial Ballistix.
I think your rams(aeneon) hold you back. Try with other good chips like micron and elpida. :)
Yes, that's next I'll do. Have to wait half an hour, then I close my shop and pull my crucial ballistix out of my work-pc!

Why, they're great modules! But with the P5B Deluxe they make no difference! I don't understand why I can't go much higher than 320 MHz FSB? I tried nearly everything, but even with a lower multiplier like 6x I can't get my E6600 to post on a higher FSB of 320 MHz!
raise voltages, fsb voltage up by .1v nb voltage by .1v cpu up by .05v memory up by .1v

Thx for all your help, but I think either the cpu or the board has a fsb-wall! I can't get this damn board to post with 321 Mhz FSB. 320 MHz works nice with most settings on auto. I tried all multipliers, raised all voltages step by step to max values, disabled all devices on the board, tried 3 different bios (0405, 0502 and 0504), tested 3 different ram modules. I also tried 330 MHz, 333 MHz, 350 MHz, 360 MHz, 365 MHz, 366 MHz and 400 MHz, but no go!
Tomorrow I'll get another E6600 and an E6400 to try, thought the P5B Deluxe would be a nice board, but I'll think I try another brand and or board.

try the e6300, many people claim to get to 3.1 ghz on that board
Just got my E6600 and E6400 cpu's. Currently I'm dual priming the E6600 with 3.0 GHz 333 MHz FSB with Auto Core Voltage. I flashed the board back to 0405 and system is running error free for about 15 mins. I think my first cpu was real crap! Tomorrow I'll get Gigabyte 965P-DS3, DS4 and DQ6... way to go!!!

Try check your memory timings with CPU-Z and see if they are along way from what they should be. Like mine here is wrong on my P5B Deluxe with my kingston memory. i ahd to up the memory voltage to get it to work.

dont check anything with cpu-z... it usually reads it wrong, check everything directly in the bios
I'm having the same problem with a P5B vanilla and an E6400. Everything up to 315 or 318 FSB works great, but a setting like 333 crashes almost immediately in Prime.
I've learned Kingston RAM is very very fussy. I tried setting the settings by hand to 5-5-5-15, which is what it should do at 667, and it crashes immediately. Letting the board SPD it wrong to 4-4-4-12 and cranking the ram voltage to get it stable gives me maybe 10-15 minutes of priming before it dies. Currently trying with a customer's OCZ PC8000 stuff... if this doesn't do 333 on this board, I'm ready to shoot the board.
Update: Still running strong on this OCZ stuff. Going to trade in my kingston for a pair of Corsair XMS2 PC6400 sticks. I love working retail :D
New BIOS updates will fix it too over time.
@Schitzo - Ram wasn't the problem in my case. My first E6600 posted only at 320 MHz max. My new one works out of the box with 333 MHz, voltage set to 1.325, because the P5B raises the voltage automatically. Still dual priming without probs...

Hi, I switched over to the Gigabyte 965P-DQ6 and now I'm testing how far my second E6600 goes with stock vcore. I dualprimed the cpu at 333 MHz (3.0GHz) trough the night on the P5B-Deluxe without any problems. Now I'm at 366 MHz with the Gigabyte dualpriming for about 30 mins also on stock vcore. Everything still on the workbench running on air!

Yes, dualprimed for an hour. Now I switched to 380 MHz FSB, but I had to bump the vcore from the default 1.325v to 1.375v to be stable at dualprime for at least a few minutes. I'm going to test at least half an hour and then I'll try to reach 400 MHz (my final goal 24/7 on water). Temperatures are rising: 333 MHz 48 degrees, 366 MHz 52 degrees and at 380 MHz 58 degrees celsius. Tested with Coretemp. Perhaps I have to switch to my alphacool watercooling system soon....
hmm thats weird... most people with conroes say the temps keep dropping... i mean, idle raises alittle
but load drops alittle
those temperatures make sense compared to my air cooling, since it should lower a little when ceramic is "cooked"
Yesterday evening coretemp showed 52 degrees and this morning it dropped 48 degrees. Dualprime ran stable vor 1 hour with 380 MHz FSB x 9 and 1.400vcore, now going for 390 MHz....
So you can get higher clocks using the DQ6?
Sorry, but I only tested the P5B Deluxe up to 333 MHz FSB. Currently I'm stuck between 380 and 400 MHz FSB. Screen get's black after a few minutes and restarts, perhaps I've hit a temperature wall.

Maybe it's the voltage, but I don't want to go over 1.475v until I build the system into my watercooling-case. Atm I'm back to 9x366 at default vcore. I'll dualprime it through night and tomorrow I'll switch over to water.
