Don't know what I'm doing wrong here...trying to OC E6600 on DS3...UPDATE!! WOOT!

OK,

please help me out here. I am an Intel OC n00b.

I just tried to set my FSB to 300 and memory to 900 (using EasyTune 5) and I applied it and it rebooted the computer and I couldn't get back into Windows again until I powered off my machine completely.

Can someone please give me an idea of what I set all of my settings at?

Let's shoot for something easy first...say 2.8Ghz.

What do I do?

The BIOS says the VCore is 1.325V as "Normal"

I've got my VDIMM @ 2.1V (OCZ Plat)

Another thing that sucks is all of my utilites (CPU-Z, EasyTune, SpeedFan etc.) all read temps and voltages differently. The BIOS says my VCore is 1.325V while Speedfan says 1.22V!

BTW, I'm on the F3 BIOS.

Please help.

EDIT: Also somethin' weird... during POST, the BIOS version "F3" is listed, but when I go view the BIOS version under "System Information" or CPU-Z, it's listed as F1.

And how do I do that?

What should all of my settings be in the BIOS if I wanted 2.8Ghz.

It's OCZ Platinum EL PC6400 2x1GB

:stick: There are some options in the bios that you are not able to see until you press Control Lft + F1 right when you enter the bios.

Then go to overclocking section (intelligent something) and you'll see the new options.

For the ram to run the right way, choose 2.0 which will give you a 1:1 ratio
Your memory is DDR2 800mhz which means 400X"2".

When you choose the FSB, your memory will run twice that speed if you select the 2.0 option.

For 2.8, just divide 2800 by your multiplier (9 I think). It should be somewhere around 312FSB which your motherboard should take easily.

Your ram will work just fine with that since 312X2 is less than the rated 800mhz it can take.

Last, increase your cpu voltage, little by little until your system actually restarts or works stable

AFAIK, most CPUs work with the same defaul voltage, about 1.3V (right where it says "normal")

From 2.4ghz to 2.8ghz shouldn't need much. Don't change it, see if it works, if it doesn't, add some more juicy, little by little.

OK, I set the mem divider to "2.0" in the BIOS. (1:1)

Using EasyTune 5, I upped the Voltage to 1.4V and tried 295FSB and BAM! Lockup and reboot! My CPU is running VERY cool and I've got great RAM.

How am I not able to pass 295FSB??? Should I try more volts than 1.4V?!?!

I've flashed the BIOS with F3 2 times now and CPU-Z still says F1, yet @BIOS says F3 and look at the different speeds in CPU-Z vs. CrystalCPUID. Argh. I'm getting pissed. Should I try to relax meme timings?

OK, I had EIST and Thermal Throttlin already disabled, but not C1E.

I disabled C1E and that fixed CPU-Z's goofyness.

:) now try to OC that biiizzznatch!

Well, I got the RAM timings fixed and CPU-Z's happy, but I still can't get past 295FSB without locking up and crashing immediately. I've tried 1.40Vcore, 1.45Vcore...no change at all. I'm about to toss this POS DS3. I dono WTF to do... :(

Should I mess with PCI-E Voltage? FSB Voltage? GMCH Voltage?

Shouldn't I be able to hit 295FSB without upping any of those voltages???

hey man..I know OCing can be a pain sometimes, but I can tell you for sure you have an amazing CPU so it's just a matter of time to where you have an awesome fast system, that runs stable...

First Off, I would say that since CPU-Z says that , they may be on to something. Does your BIOS still report F3? I would try and flash the bios another way if possible, try not to do it un windows. Using a floppy, even thoug is a pain, is a sure way that you get the correct bios and nothing messes it up.


also, your PCI-Express frequency should be at 100, and PCI clock should be at 33.3 mhz...

Thanks for the tips Blazing...I only flashed with the floppy. And on the POST screen it says F3. I tried re-downloading the BIOS and reflashing it - no change. And yes, I did the "Load Optimize Defaults"

I will try to set the PCI-E to 100 - I think it's at 90 by default. Also, how do I control the PCI clock? Is that "FSB Voltage" in the BIOS?

Maybe power supply is a bit weak to be handling all that.

That’s harsh. I thought the DS3 and an E6600 would have been a good setup. Maybe on the off chance, you might have a bad Northbridge that can't handle any higher FSB speeds. Possibly.

It’s a shame that the DS3 has so many irritating problems, what could have been a good board turns out to be a big time waster.

strange that CPU-Z indicates bios version as F1, and F1 is crappy OC bios

Flash bios to F4C using floppy or something? CPU-Z may be indicating a problem with your bios version, and this may be causing your crappy OC.

try to flash first to F2 and see if CPU-Z will show correct bios version, also use @bios program

I don't know if I want to use F4c because I don't want to have to swap RAM n crap out if this new BIOS forces you to reset jumpers.

When you flash disbale "Keep DMI Data", that's why CPU-Z is reporting F1.

It's simple guys, the reason CPU-Z reports and different bios number is because it's holding the DMI data from a previous bios. I know this because it has been reported before and my own experience of flashing.

If you use @bios and tick Clear DMI Data + Clear PnP Data Pool you'll see the corect bios listed in CPU-Z.

So, I ran memtest86 while set at 318FSB (this is where I can boot into windows but Prime bombs out) and the memory passed with flying colors.


I also tried using a 7x multi and 330FSB and it wouldn't even boot into Windows. What does that mean? I can get 312x9 to boot and be perfectly stable.

maybe because it's slower then stock clocks? Not sure if you can downclock the chip lower then spec....

EDIT: Did you run memtest at 7x330?

It probably means you need to review all bios settings one by one and do a process of elimination, then move on to increasing voltage, sparingly, until you see an improvement.

Other then that, you're hitting a wall with your particular E6600, not all chips will overclock the same. I had a E6 stepping 3000+ and while many reported 2.4-2.6GHz all i was able to get was 2.1GHz.

It's luck of the draw.

I have only tried +2 on MCH and no higher than 1.5Vcore, should I try +3 on MCH? I mean, I'm only trying to get to 318x9 stable here!

change the mch fsb and pci-e to auto

the ram you have, i know its 6400 and your running it less than that, its actually not even running 667.
put up @ 312 and use the memtest floppy and make sure your not getting any memtest errors.

try 1 stick of ram and see if you can go further.

there is truly something here stopping you and frankly, from what you have done thus far, have no idea.

a wall at such a low speed could mean the motherboard, or the cpu, it could mean the psu is just totally junk.

have you tried making a big jump in the fsb to like 375 to see if it boots ?

what happens if you set the ram to ddr800 ? or just set the dram freq to auto ? does that change anything ?

i'll be frank with you, as i am with everyone, i hate that ram your using. there isnt anything special about it. never has been never will be.


i can boot 420mhz FSB with auto mch fsb and pci i have never had a need to use any other settings.
this is with uber crappy samsung ddr 667 @ 840mhz. 5-5-5.

change your ram timings to auto. dram freq to auto mch to auto. vcore to 1.35 (there is no need at all to go any further and frankly an E6600 will do 3.2ghz on stock volts. so try sticking the vcore on auto.)

yank the mothebaord out examine it VERY closely the front and the back make sure you dont see any burnt or "odd" spots.
maybe its grounding out on the back side to the case ?

are you using the 24pin PSU connector ?

if you have the chance to try other ram do it.
other wise call gigabyte and rma it or buy another one.
that board has gotta be bad if your ram isnt causing the issue.

with the new bios i am able to boot at 420mhz so they fixed it a little bit so thats an extra 180mhz so im now at 3.78ghz :)

hey lestat quick question for you since you've been so helpful. Sometimes when messing with bios settings it will reboot and go back to default clocks. Then if i try previously good clocks they won't work, but if i load optimized defaults the previous good clocks work again.

Is this good enough or should i be clearing the CMOS after a clock failure?

FSB AUTO
Memory timings AUTO
Divider 2.0

I can't believe it!! Somehow increasing those voltages +1 held me back. I haven't tried any higher yet...just got done running PRIME STABLE!!!

Has anyone taking a voltage testing tool to see if the voltages actually match the settings in the bios? It seems like you have to set it a good .1 to .2 volts higher then spec to get things working with this board. The ram is a good example, people running it at 2.3 volts in the bios.

OK, After trying for 3.4GHz and failing with all previous settings, the computer shutdown and kept restating without posting. I had to reset the CMOS jumper.

Interesting news about the F4c BIOS: I NO LONGER have to use an el cheapo stick of RAM to get into BIOS. MY OCZ Platinums will now boot into BIOS long enough for me to get 'em to 2.1V!! That makes things A LOT easier!

OK, so now I think I need some more VCore and maybe 2.2V on VDIMM and Maybe +.1 on VMCH.

it could be your PSU man.... you have a preety loaded rig there.... and am not sure abt the quality of the 480 NP...

i was kinda wondering if you werent just sitting at a goofy point in the FSB and buy jumping past that it might work.

ok.. now keep the vcore at 1.4v you technically should only need about 1.3 for 3.2ghz push the fsb right up to 400. put the vcore @ 1.35

now the trick here is to make sure the ram divider is at 2.00
that means your ram is 800mhz so make damn sure it can handle it

if you have the ocz XTC 5400 those suck hardcore. - sorry cant recall what you had. but the 5400's wont do 800 very well. they are a nasty set of 667 ram for overclocking.

keep trying man keep the mch fsb and the others at auto see how far you can go.

I had to bump the VCore to 1.5V to get there though! It would run Prime fine @ 1.475V, but would not run the 3DMark05 CPU tests until I bumped it to 1.5V.

How much VCore is too much for an E6600 with an Ultra-120? The thing stays pretty darn cool according to EasyTune and SpeedFan - no more than 43C/44C.

I mean so far, the only thing helping me push up the FSB is upping the VCore. I guarantee if I try for 3.4GHz 378x9, I'll have to up the Vcore to at least 1.525V.

Is there something else I can do to not require so much CPU voltage?

Also, I think I do need a new PSU, during 3D benchmarks, I can hear my fans slow down ever so slightly :eek:

Should I get a Fortron 600W or sumthin'?

I would buy an Enermax Liberty 620w.

Try that CoreTemp program. Search google or the forums for it.

Yea I'm feeling a weak PSU. The OCZ GameXStreme 700W would be an excellent choice. I am going to pick one up before my next video card (R600 prolly, and those eat up a lot of energy).

How much VCore is too much for an E6600 with an Ultra-120? The thing stays pretty darn cool according to EasyTune and SpeedFan - no more than 43C/44C.

I mean so far, the only thing helping me push up the FSB is upping the VCore. I guarantee if I try for 3.4GHz 378x9, I'll have to up the Vcore to at least 1.525V.

Is there something else I can do to not require so much CPU voltage?

Also, I think I do need a new PSU, during 3D benchmarks, I can hear my fans slow down ever so slightly :eek:

Should I get a Fortron 600W or sumthin'?

i have never even had to use 1.4v yet and i been at 3.8ghz.

but mine is a Step5 B1 ES chip.

people were talking about those retails being sucky for overclocking wow.. guess they were right.

YES if your fans are slowing down during 3d benches thats not good. your psu is really taking a beating.
yes get the forton 600w. that one kicks arse. same as the ocz 600w!

So I hit a wall again can't get past 3.3GHz 367x9.
Here's my DS3 settings that are rock solid @ 367.

No-Execute Memory Protect = Disabled
CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E) = Disabled
CPU Thermal Monitor 2 (TM2) = Disabled
CPU EIST Function = Disabled
Virtualization Technology = Disabled
Legacy USB Storage Detect = Disabled
CPU Host Frequency (Mhz) = 367
PCI-E Frequency = AUTO
System Memory Multiplier = 2.0
DIMM OverVoltage Control = +3 (2.1V)
PCI-E Voltage = AUTO
VMCH = AUTO
FSB = AUTO
CPU Voltage Control = 1.5V

Trying to get to 373x9, I've already tried:
5.5 VCore = reboot cycle, no POST, clear CMOS
+4 VDIMM = reboot cycle, no POST, clear CMOS

Any idears?

It might help but I definately agree that you should upgrade your pc to a more stable and more powerful one.

The Neo PSUs are pretty nice. They have 3 independent 12v rails for a total of 36A. Is that not enough?

that x1900 pulls alot of juice on the 12v and alot of power supplies have issues if they aren't loaded equally on all rails

I have the old very first NEO Power 480 - it's not as nice as the newer HE550 Neo.

BUT, I just ordered a brand spanky new

Antec TruePower Trio 550

This is a brand new PSU that is only available through Antec right now. They say it blows away the previous NEO HE PSU's.
I told them I had a 7900GT and some Raptors and other stuff and they cringed, knowing I was trying to do it on my NeoPower480.

I'm excited - I did next day shipping-it should be here tomorrow or Monday! :)

also keep in mind not all boards are gonna clock equally, and 430 fsb is nothing to sneeze at, granted some people are getting much higher, but I wouldn't expect all to hit 500+ speeds:) but I do hope mine does:p:

Your PSU might not be holding you back but I would definently get a new one if you want to be safe at all.

Agreed, if he were running stock it would be fine, but for overclocking you need more headroom and stability.

I'm checking out some PSUs. I'm confused though. This 600W enermax has 2 12v rails at 22A each. My 430watt PSU has 3 12 rails at 16A each so technically i've allready got more power right?

yeah but your x1900 is probably pulling 13-14amps by itself, so extra is always good

the reason why it wont boot at all at anything else but x9 multiplier is because it is a retail chip and you cannot change the multiplier.

I'd look into one of the fortron or ocz gamersxtream power supplies, 600 watts should do you fine. and they're rated at 18amps per rail 4 rails, I run the 600watt version

I wonder if the 400fsb wall with conroe can be fixed with a bios upgrade ?
