Very interesting comparision :up: As some were suspecting earlier, 965P-DS3 seems to be indeed a bit slower, across all benchmarks you've run. I wonder, If this is typical for 965P or perhaps only DS3 shows this noticeable drop in performance. We'd have to see e.g. ASUS P5B Dx to to report for that comparison as well... Don't you have one, lying around somewhere? :)

Well seems like the Asus P5W DH still king of the hill for performance, but the gigabyte isn't really far behind for a cheaper board.

it just goes to show you that the I965, which has the ICH8(R) chipset, was not designed to beat out the I975X...memory performance is the game for the I965X..if that interpolates into better video performance for certain games, so be it!

Yes, it does, but K.I.T.T. only ran one run of each, which can lead to huge variance. This testing had it run 3 times each, to help eliminate possible misfindings due to variance.

Now it looks like I should have gone with Asus rather than gigabyte. Plus there is more mods for asus.

the DS3 is "made" for the E6300/E6400... it's a wonderful Allendale board.

But for the hardcore Conroe action, the extra $100 is well invested.

Right, this is a comparison of clock for clock.

It would be interesting to see DS3 vs ASUS in a max performance test with the allendales using same ram/cooling, etc.

So if you buy Allendale, get a 965 mobo.

If you buy Conroe or Kentsfield, get a 975 mobo.

Is that a good assumption??

unlike some here who have neither and yet boast and brag about the hardware.

DS3 all the way boys and girls
make no mistake about it.

the p5w is STILLLLLL limited to 400mhz fSB on a 9x multi or high, the same as the gigabyte, the abit the dfi all of them
i have yet to see anyone mod the gigabyte yet though but when they do i may have mine moded.

unless you NEED xfire then dont even come near the P5W.
its worth no more than the gigabyte. but your still baying $100 more for it.

you have to mod the hell out of the P5W DH to make it worth 250 bucks and by that time you've spent $300. not to mentoin another $50 for proper cooling. and voided the warranty

the DS3 is by leaps and bounds a better board.
ALL of the issues it has thus far are totally surrounding the bios and can be fixed with 1 simple update. and none of those issues stop the board from performing or reaching 400mhz fsb with a 6600 or higher.

again unless you NEED xfire avoid the asus like the plague. its not any better than all the other crap asus has put out over the years.

the DS3 is NOT geared to the 6300/6400 its geared to whatever chip you want to throw on it. but like i just said a 9x multi or above is going to puke out at 400mzh JUST LIKE all the other NONMODDED 975/965 boards so why the frick pay another $100 when it takes another $100 to make it run right.

Yeah it seems that around ~3.6 GHz is the practical limit of the CPU with typical air cooling . Though it seems some have been able to push this with mods and other tricks like you say.

So really the FSB is not the issue like everyone wants to think. Its probably CPU limited because those lower multipiers are still able to hit ~3.6 Ghz too.

Now thing about this experiment (and thank you PC Criminal) is that it doesn't tell us max performance of the boards themselves. I think someone else speculated that while the DS3 can clock higher with e6300/e6400 it (or the 965p) has more latency which would account for this clock for clock difference.

I agree that he makes "some" valid points - but without the Asus bashing - they would come across much stronger - but back to topic please.

as for me its worth to buy P5WDH. the bundle inside at least cost about 50bucks like remote + wifiAP etc.. plus u got Xfire ready and very nice looking Mobo.
400FSB is more than enough for daily use PC

for 8x i can boot up at 430

P5W had bad and good reviews but mine does 425 x 9 at start

for me DS3 is very strong for fsb and P5W for clocking

I ran each benchmark 2 times to ensure consistency, and the best score was included for each. I'm pretty sure my results are accurate :)

Pi on the DS3 was ran 3 times because i smelt a rat, but it was way behing the ASUS.

i just maked this comparo cz i can`t understand why you people(Allandale guys) got amazing fsb(boot up) with DS3,i can boot up at 430 but its not 100% stable(sometimes i got resets or black screen)my guess is Allandale runs better with DS3 and you show us with your comparo.

Can you try cold booting at 450 x 7? I'm having no problems doing that. Quite a few members with allendales are cold booting at 465 MHz+ , although my mobo seems to be stuck at 450.

Well, after reading I still don't regret ordering the DS3. I want to see how MSI and DFI do with the 975/RD600/590 boards anyways.

Based on what I've seen from all over the net, the 975 is simply a bit faster, while the 965 clocks a bit better. Seems like an obvious trade off in latencies so the trend makes sense.

Thanks a lot for the testing PcCI2iminal. I was a litlte "worried" about the Ds§ results, 5 mins after I orderd the P5W, but now it doesnt look that bad, so I guess I will be happy with it until RD600 boards hit the market.
Has anyone tested both a 6300/6400 and a 6600 in the same MB? I wonder if its "just" the lower multi or the smaller cache, that makes Allendales run at a higher fsb.

I'm tired of reading all this garbage about the P5W DH not being able to do more than 400 FSB. This is my unmodded board with a 9 multiplier.

Is that watercooled? Or that stock board with good air cooling. I suspect its cooling on the CPU that is the limitation with Conroe and not these mobos. In other words the motherboards are delivering its just thermal limitations on the CPU holding back total clock speeds.

That was with air cooling (Tuniq Tower 120).:)

There are probably some P5W DH boards that can't clock as high. The quality of the boards is uneven, I will admit that. The P5WD2 is the same way. But a good Asus board is worth owning. Asus' track record with Intel is much better than Gigabyte's. The P4P800 was another great board. So was the P4C800-E.

Asus is the largest motherboard manufacturer in the world. They ship more than 20 million boards each year, so there are bound to be some duds. But there are also going to be some gems.

have you had any trouble w/ vdroop ? the p5w looks good, but vdroop has me worried; does it only come into play after you push 410+ FSB?

Vdroop is around 0.04-0.05 under full load, which isn't bad by Asus standards. When Vdroop gets to be 0.08v or more, than you need to worry a little.

The P4C-800E 1st rev. once vmodded was :slobber: with my 2.4c m0
although back then Abit IC7-G/IC7-MAX3 were very good for intel also..

But, yeah Asus P5WDH hit 425+ fsb pretty easy for me b4 the Vmods. :)

I think they are uneven. Mine won't go past 400 1-1 no matter what I set anything to. It may be user error, but I'd like to think not. :p: I am going to try the DQ6 and then the P5WDG2-WS pro version of the Asus and see which one I like better.

DS3 + X6800 11 x 300 fsb and i got resets :mad:

and the max clock for benching seems to be the same as E6600

Compare the speeds at 333MHz fsb with those two mobos. The Stilt said that after 333MHz the mobo changes the strap. At 400MHz fsb speeds seems same as at 1066MHz strap and single channel. That would explain why the DS3 is slower than the P5W DH Dlx.

Well the Gigabyte board does higher fsb and it seems to be a result from looser chipset latencies, but when comparing speeds at 400MHz the looser timings seem to take it's toll.

Since this thread seems popular, I'd like to clear some confusion surrounding P5W-DH and P965-DS3. Neither board are inferior to each other in general, but there are conditions where one comes ahead the other - but it's not because one's at fault, but because it's by design.

Remember Tony's thread regarding chipset latency and frequency? These two boards are at the opposite end on that approach. ASUS believed in tight chipset latency (as they have done with 865/875 chipset, or PAT) and forcing 1066 straps with very tight timings. But the downside is it hits the first FSB wall at around 370 (266 base FSB + 100). In order to go higher one will have to give up any memory speed faster than FSB. 1:1 can take you up to next strap (1333) which will hit the 2nd wall around 430 (333 base FSB + 100), and if you want to go higher than that again this time you need to give up 1:1 and run your memory slower than FSB. This is why many people who have memory capable of 1000+MHz can't have those expensive sticks run at rated speed once they go past 370~380MHz. Again, this is not because of the board is faulty but by design.

On the other hand, the DS3 was built ground up for high FSB. Of course now you can guess they achieve this at the cost of chipset latency. (Just think the opposite of ASUS)

So all in all 8 x 450 on Gigabyte and 9 x 400 on ASUS will roughly be equal. But of course at same FSB (both 9 x 400) ASUS comes out on top. But the downside is ASUS can't reach such high FSB like 8 x450. (without a mod, at least)

In the end, it sort of makes sense that the DS3 is more suited for Allendale and P5W is better suited for Conroe, since on P5W, E6300/E6400 won't see its true potential due to the FSB walls. However when your CPU is likely to hit the limit before FSB due to higher multies, ASUS could be a better choice.

As you can see this is not about one being superior to the other, but about the two companies different design philosophy. :D The final winner wouldn't be decided by the hardware, but by the BIOS. It's literally a BIOS war. Of course we don't know who the winner is going to be yet. So one should decide on the board based on the whole rig s/he's going to build. You cannot just buy a certain board because someone got a good result on it. The choice of CPU, the choice of RAM, and the choice of motherboard are very closely related one another this time.

P.S. I learned above from Gary Key, an editor at AnandTech. (A truly great reviewer whose opinion I totally trust) I'd suggest you all take a read of his reviews if you haven't already.

Nice thread, I played with DS3 for a while with E6600ES and had no real luck with clocking, guess I need more time to experiment. I tried F3 BIOS and could not get to boot at 333 with stock voltage - bad axe does 416 with stock!

I got a DS3, AB9 and 965P-NEO here. None of these budget boards are true overclockers board IMO. Solid caps on the gigabyte everywhere is nice, msi has no solid, abit solid just for CPU.

I'm sticking with my bad axe (bad axe 2 soon), for CPU overclocking. For gaming I am waiting on the P5N32-SLI Premium NF590 board to go with my 7950GX2s.

I wish someone would make an ICH8R+975x board though!
