Lets see how the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 processor's power handles the re-encoding of the Matrix Reloaded region 4 dvd using DVD Shrink with 'Deep Analysis' enabled and reset for each test.

• 700W OCZ GameXStream Multi-GPU Psu

• DVDShrink 3.2.0.15

Test configuration:

• 9x266fsb = 2400Mhz (stock E6600 speeds) with memory @266mhz 3-2-2-8
• 9x333fsb = 3004Mhz with memory @333mhz 3-2-2-8
• 9x378fsb = 3406Mhz with memory @378mhz 4-3-2-8
• 9x400fsb = 3600Mhz with memory @400mhz 4-3-2-8
• 9x416fsb = 3752Mhz with memory @416mhz 4-3-2-8
• 9x423fsb = 3812Mhz with memory @423mhz 4-3-2-8

Methodology:

Limitations of dvd burner interface speed:

At first, I tested DVD Shrink conversion with the Matrix Reloaded dvd media in the Pioneer DVD-RW drive. However, the initial tests showed that the dvd burner's interface speed limited the ability to really test the power of Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 cpu. At both 2400Mhz and 3004Mhz DVD Shrink completed 'Deep Analysis' and re-encoding of the dvd in the around approximately the same time of 16mins 24/25s. Without 'Deep Analysis', the re-encoding took exactly the same time to complete at 2400Mhz and 3004Mhz, 8mins 21s.

At 2400Mhz and 3004Mhz the same DVD Shrink completion times from physical dvd media in dvd burner with 'Deep Analysis' versus without 'Deep Analysis':

To remove the dvd burner's interface speed limitation, I decided to use DVDDecrypter 3.5.4 to create an ISO image of the dvd for the DVD Shrink tests. With a 3x 320GB Seagate 7200.10 SATAII raid 0 array to work with, it should be sufficient to allow the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 cpu's processing power to show through.

As you can see even DVDDecrypter's ISO creation from the dvd burner took exactly 8mins 21s as well:

Finally, for consistent test results, the 'Deep Analysis' cached results must be reset for each test. To do this for each test run, you need to delete the contents located at:

• 9x333fsb = 3004Mhz with memory @333mhz 3-2-2-8 = 6min 59s (604Mhz overclock = 18.16% faster)
• 9x378fsb = 3406Mhz with memory @378mhz 4-3-2-8 = 6min 03s (1006Mhz overclock = 29.10% faster)
• 9x400fsb = 3600Mhz with memory @400mhz 4-3-2-8 = 5min 44s (1200Mhz overclock = 32.80% faster)
• 9x416fsb = 3752Mhz with memory @416mhz 4-3-2-8 = 5min 34s (1352Mhz overclock = 34.77% faster)
• 9x423fsb = 3812Mhz with memory @423mhz 4-3-2-8 = 5min 32s (1412Mhz overclock = 35.16% faster)

By removing the dvd burner's interface limitation, DVD Shrink re-encoding with 'Deep Analysis' enabled better shows the effects on completion times. At 3812Mhz, DVD Shrink reported as high as 39,900KB/s encoding speeds. I managed to screen capature at 99% mark.

Note: 'Deep Analysis' adds around ~2.5 to 3.5 minutes of extra processing time.

Nice tests eva. Check out this thread at OCF, and maybe run that too if you got time. I know nothing about encoding but over there it seems like the A64's did very well...only reason my time was the fastest was raw MHz I think.

Good tests! Try Pinnacle Instant copy sometime. Not as fast as dvd shrink but (IMO) superior encoding and the final copies are letter perfect.
Use version 8.0 or newer.

Nice test eva! I was telling MovieMan the same thing the other night. Van Wilder with everything set to default in dvd shrink on my Opteron 146@2.8ghz took 24min 41s, on my conroe at 2.4ghz (stock) it took 14min 23s.

I cant wait to unleash a Conroe using DVD RB with the Cinema Craft Encoder. I get about 4.52/sec using it with the Opty 165 @ 2800. I think Conroe will easily push that past 12.0/sec.

Very nice info. I found that going from my amd+3500 to my pd805 with two cores@3.86 cut the time to re-encode in nero vision in more than half.

Followed eva2000's lead and used DVD Decryter to rip the ISO. Then backed up using "deep analysis" to a folder....

• DFI NF4 UT SLI-DR R.AB0 406BTA bios to allow 233 upclock mem divider
• 512MB Gecube X1900XTX stock hsf
• 2x 512MB OCZ PC3200 Gold UTT BH-5
• 4x80GB Hitachi 7K80 SATAII NCQ Raid 0 (nvraid)
• Pioneer DVD-RW + FDD
• 1KW PCP&C SLI power supply
• WinXP Pro SP2 fully updated

Notes:

1. Due to phase change cooling, FX-60 max HTT is low - this may influence performance somewhat.
2. All DVD Shrink settings and ISO are the same as for Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 tests.
3. Seems DVD Shrink completion times are always highly influenced by hard drive speed, so differences between FX-60 and E6600 systems' drive configurations can influence the results. Faster drive speeds and drive configurations and controllers which handle NCQ well i suspect would give better times.
4. FX-60 used single volume 4x80GB SATAII raid 0 array where OS partition and ISO images etc were on same raid volume as where the DVD Shrink output was being written to. FX-60 disks had NCQ enabled.
5. E6600 used 3x320GB SATAII raid 0 split into 2x separate raid 0 arrays volumes where DVD Shrink ISO image was being read from a seperate raid 0 array from where the DVD Shrink output was being written to. E6600 disks had NCQ disabled as in bios drives were setup as RAID and not ACHI mode (which enables NCQ).

Test Configurations & Results:

• @14x215HTT = 3010Mhz with OCZ PC3200 Gold UTT BH-5@250mhz 2-2-2-5 = 9min 34s
• @15x220HTT = 3300Mhz with OCZ PC3200 Gold UTT BH-5@253mhz 2-2-2-5 = 8min 53s
• @16x206HTT = 3305Mhz with OCZ PC3200 Gold UTT BH-5@236mhz 2-2-2-5 = 8min 57s
• @16x213HTT = 3408Mhz with OCZ PC3200 Gold UTT BH-5@243mhz 2-2-2-5 = 8min 41s

As you can see for 3408Mhz test here's the screen capture at 99% mark notice difference in encoding speed. Whether the drive configuration played a factor who knows.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 vs AMD64 FX-60 DVD Shrink Comparison

Now putting the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 and AMD64 FX-60 test results together we get the following:

Good stuff but I doubt you'll be able to do apples to apples comparisons with other members because of all the variables. In most Ripping - Reauthoring - Burning cylces the optical and hard drives will slightly muffle Conroe's advantage. Still very nice to see how Conroe performance scales with another benchmark. Using two Rapture 150's (no raid)... On the first test the iso and the output folder were on the same drive. This time I sent the output to the other drive, wow!

I bought the barracudas in my sig to help out with ripping as well. It takes about 20-30 minutes (I havent done it in a while) on my crappy 2.4 Ghz Pentium 4 and normal 7200rpm WD drive.

just got it up and running couple minutes ago so i gotta get it up to 4ghz

ok, i know conroe is fast and all, but...

i finally got my replacement cable so i can *CONVENIENTLY* use the jmicron controller instead of the nonworking intel...

it took 14mins i think to rip an entire dvd with dvd decrypter.

i hve to wonder how much the drive is limiting it, and/or if i can make my drive work faster? it 'spins up' very slow, ie, it takes a LONG time to get up to high speed, and by the time its there, its already winding down for the end of the dvd. cant i just make it accelerate faster?

EDIT and dvdshrink now is only using about 25% of my CPU... i need to make my drive faster! its not old or crappy or anything, it is just overconservative on getting up to speed slowly.

Turns out my drive WAS 'riplocked'... very lame, Lite-On, that's the last drive I ever buy from you.
If it's locked at 8x, it's not a 16x drive.

Let me know how it works out. AFAIK raid card doesnt work right for this board. But there is one guy that supposely ran it with updated drivers from Areca. Not sure if he still has problem tho.

You didn't have to reinstall windows. You could just install the raid drivers inside windows, then use Norton Ghost to clone to the RAID 0 array. Doesn't take very long at all.
