OPB's perspective about Asus P5W DH RAM issue

Well, debate, debate,
some said intel bad-axe is better, some said it's whacked regarding the 1333 strap
so what's going on?
Now, I hope I can get myself out of confusion though,
Today, I am gonna take some time to try it myself, see how is that difference between thes two boards.
we'll see.;)

Guess what, I just found a pretty decent cooler here --->Zalman CNPA9500LED,but it's kinda pricy though
and it doesn't support AM2..,however, if you have AM2version of this cooler;
just simply use this cooler on the AM2. because it's all copper ;)

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 S5
mobo: Asus p5w DH DX; BIOS 0088(Don't ask me at this D); completely no mod
vga: BFG pci mx4000
ram: Team Group DDRII 667, 3-4-4-8 2x1g ; Micron D9GMH
OS: windows 2003 SP1 no tweak;
I heard about there is a problem regarding raid 0 on Conroe stepping 5?
but seems like I use wd 150gb x2 AHFD HD Raid0 no problem at this moment.

The government, and people who use servers, aka 97% of the user base.

RAID 5 is a nice way to get speed + size + safety on a HT PC and I believe the P5W DH is built as a home media mobo.

Maybe RAID 5 is what Intel fixed in the B-2 stepping?

in my test, asus faster than intel in pi_32m, about 15~20sec.

Yes, I enable that

what you guys need to do is look at what chipset registers are being set. I already know that to get over 400fsb the CPU has to be strapped at 1333 so you really only need to look at the memory strap to be sure what Asus are doing.

XBX already sets 1333 for both CPU and mem.

Remember 1333 1:1 = 667, 1066 1:1 = 533.


make sure you test both settings with the same ram, same CPU in both boards for an apples to apples comparison.

but what I don't understand is why you set 1333cpu and ram 533 under intel bad axe, CPUZ and everything shows 1:1? how are you going to tell if thatis 1066:533 or 1333:533?;)

You need to look at register tables, don't trust any software in XP as who knows if its reading the register tables correct.

The point of all this 5h1te is to sort out what straps are being set..i already know as being an Intel freak since the 845 days i know how their chipsets work and how they have carried over designs from one chipset family to another.

I can't wait for RD600 boards to hit and the 590 boards so we can put this crap to bed...i told the world how it works already!!!

But RD600 is delayed right? :(

I have almost the exact same setup as OPB, except I have the Bad Axe v304 with no mods.

I have the Zalman 9500, Super Talent DDR2 800 4-4-3-8 @ 2.2V, Conroe 6700 ES Stepping 5.

The max I can get is 3.82 with anywhere from 1.48-1.55 Vcore. FSB and Northbridge at max volts allowed in BIOS, tried BIOS 1304 and 1181.

At least I know that the Zalman 9500 is the limiting factor since our OCs are almost identical. I'm looking for a Tuniq Tower 120 and that may help the OC a bit. I'm pretty much maxed at 3.8. For 24/7, I think 3.7 at 1.4875V is addequate.

You guys running the Zalman 9500 LED with your E6700s

What are your idle temperatures?
What are your temperatures at 3.8?

What are the Intel's safe temperature guide lines?

I ask because I will be using the same 2 pieces!

What programs are best for monitoring temps while in Windows?

I have been using the "Core" program to monitor temps but it simply tells you how many degrees C the chip is from the Tjunction point.

I've never really been happy with my Zalman 9500. I just bought a lapping kit and I hope that will help a bit. I also think I need to reapply a much thinner layer of AS5. I'm ultimately looking for a Tuniq Tower 120 once they start producing them again in August.

Once someone gives me a link to the better Temp monitoring programs for the Conroes, I'll certainly post temps. I max out OC at 3.85 with a the Gaming rig in my sig below.

I'm getting a Asus Pw5 DH next week and I will run some comparisons between the Asus and Intel Bad Axe using a 6700 ES and Zalman 9500.

it will be great to have also the dfi infinity at this comparition but maybe i ask to much :p :p :p

one thing you guys MUST be aware of,(especially no mod on board and air cooling)

if you use asus p5w dh, don't set "fsb termination voltage" too high( approx. 1.4v is the proper value),
or when you set your vcore higher than 1.5v (actual volt), you will experience unstable situation!!

that is right

i can't do over 340FSB until OPB sent me his bios capture!
then we found out the only difference is FSB voltage, i set 1.6v and his is 1.5v. after i changed to 1.5v i can do up to 420

What baord is the better board in your eyes Kevin?
No vcore over 1.5v doesnt sound too great ;(
I was planning on getting a P5W DH DX too, but after reading what Toni said, it seems to be better to wait for RD600 :/

I guess I expected the difference with the Intel to be bigger. 9s in pi32M really is peanuts, but the Asus is consistently (a little bit) faster.

Kyosen-san has everything all exceed max values and he can handle perfectly;)

Just a few comments about Asus Intel boards. They are not very consistent. A few people here have used more than one P5W DH. Some boards will do 410-420FSB max, while others are capable of 450+. The P5WD2 was also like this, very inconsistent. So it's partly luck of the draw whether you get a great board. And great Asus boards are worth owning.

A few people have said their system is unstable if they use high FSB Termination Voltage. I use high FSB voltage all the time with no problem. And my board is not modded.

I think a lot depends on the board and the BIOS you're using. My advice to people is to experiment on your own. Your best settings may not be the same as someone else's.

The bulk of those will have a server MB with hardware RAID5 SCSI/SAS controllers. No business should use a home board with onboard RAID5.
