How to: Disabling SpeedStep with Conroe ES Steppings 4 and 5

Here it is gentlemen, playing with CPU MSRs can be fun.... ;)

Steps:
1) Open CPU-Z so that you can see the active multiplier switch in realtime
2) Open CrystalCPUID -> Function -> MSR Editor
3) Type 0x000001A0 in the MSR Field
4) Click "RDMSD" (read)
5) Copy the upper 32-bits of the EDX resigister to the box below (should be 0x00000060 or similar)
6) Copy the lower 32-bits to the box below (should be 0x63940089 or similar)
7) Change the 3 (as in 0x63940089) to a 1
8) Click WRMSR (write)

You CPU's maximum multiplier (default on XE is 11x) is now set and the CPU will not step down. I see no difference in idle temperatures doing this. Long term affects have not be judged yet as I just did this about 1 hour ago. CPU seems to respond quicker in benchmarks and doesn't show the tendency to step down at the "wrong" time.

Or maybe he doesn't like FisherPrice XP?

It's probably Windows Server 2003, which doesn't default to a 9 year old's theme.

is this something that must be done on every windows boot ?
and since this isnt doing any hardware modifications is it possible to do this with a simply registry edit ?
your using a binary/memory address .. where is this location actually stored ?

Tried it at my Merom, no impact, maybe wrong setting...

Every time I read the values, I got different EAX...

I looks, I can´t write it back...

does this stick only for windows session ? would have to redo this each reboot ?

isn`t that the same as disabling EIST in Rmclock ?

this makes the pentium M don`t clock down anymore(just like celeron M for example).

plus : it works forever, but you have to restart to (de-)activate it.

if this works for conroe too, i think it`s a better solution.

that worked 2 time with a clean 2k3 server, but now didn't work, don't know why, after installing systool i got few problems with Crystal CPUID, wrong frequancy, can't change multiplier, then under clean windows XP can't change multiplier :slapass:

i need x7 or x8 for testing MAX FSB !!! :mad:

I guess setting power management to always on dosnt work like laptops with pentium m if it's not set to always on it's speed steps down.

i can't find the MSR for the multiplier, i think it's 0x00000198, but doesn't work, same as the multiplier managment of CrystalCPUID :(

Is W2k3 server significantly faster than XP? And all XP drivers work on it?

FCG , do you think that this "trick" can work with older cpu's AKA presky's and preslers?

So disabling EIST in bios do'nt work with Conroe?

Thanks FCG - it works perfectly with my Conroe 6700 ES Stepping 5 and Bad Axe v304 board.

I just rebooted and it went back to its default speed stepping. Does this have to be set everytime on a reboot?

At Yonah you don´t need it with BIOS 1.03c and 1.04, just disable speedstep in BIOS...

I wonder if this is needed for retail...Could this be made into a sticky?

I am working on a driver that will allow disabling/enabling EIST, C1E and the setting multiplier on boot or any time via the device manager. Should see it very soon. I just need to finish with my move right now, no time to do anything else.

With the P5B Deluxe when i disable speedstep and C1 in bios it works, no more speedstep.

Just a quick post to say this works with a step 4 E6700 ES, where the first 32-bits are read as 0x62972089. I change to 0x61972089 and it works.

That driver would rock, FCG!

err why do we need to disable this thing? isnt it a useful thing where we can save some heat and electricity as well? or it does effect our overclocking? sorry for asking such a silly question (if it is..)

we really need that bad with these crappy intel mobos..........well mobos are actually ok it's the damn multi that's just too damn low :( and they OC too good :D

wishful thinking, I tried it and the highest it will go is the max multi of your cpu, even if you select higher...

anyone know how to do this on a step 6 rev b2?

Is there already a known way to automate the disabling of EIST
so i doesn't have to be done manually every boot?
I thought i read about a way but do not find it any more at the moment.

OOps, too fast on the trigger, lost it upon reboot.

I was wanting to know if any one knows how to help me turn off speed step on a Pentium mobile four as it keeps throttling down and never comes back up when I use the CPU at 100% it just sitting at 1.2 GHz which is just crap. I have tired all the normal ways and a few programs however I think if I don’t hack the registry then its not going to work.

I downloaded crystal CPU however I don’t know the values to put into the program so if any one can tell where to either read up and figure it out on my own or just tell what I can do to help fix this crappie laptop feel free to make a post or tell me.

Hi, I know that post was from about two years ago, but I was hoping you still remember about it. I'm quite interested in pinmodding my merom from 133 to 200. It'd bring my speed to 2.6ghz from 1.73. But as with all meroms/yonahs on intel chipsets, I would imagine that the multiplier will get stuck on 6x. I was wondering if you had ever attempted any bsel manipulation before on your merom, and could attest to whether this would successfully unlock the multiplier from 6x again.
