AMD Pricing Strategy

AMD Price cuts have come...but in time for Rev G A64s to be re-introduced at the same old x2 pricing ??

After this happens:

A64 X2 5200+ RevG 65nm $420 2.6Ghz 2x1MB
A64 X2 5400+ RevG 65nm $450 2.8Ghz 2x512K
A64 X2 5600+ RevG 65nm $480 2.8Ghz 2x1MB
A64 X2 5800+ RevG 65nm $500 3.0Ghz 2x512K

Get it? AMD can offer its earliest response to conroe (Rev G) for the SAME prices as the current X2s. So ~$200 Conroe will price AND performance war.

This is VERY likely because chips of a new process are ALWAYS more expensive. I hope it isn't true, but if it is, its gonna be :sick:

Point is that AMD will charge a premium for 65nm...while Intel won't for Conroe. :(

Hope it wont happen :( AMD atm could fight Conroe only with lower prices, which they can make using 65nm tech, but if they keep prices that high I will choose conroe :(

I think X2 5200 with 2.6GHz and 13x multy for $325 looks very good.
Perhaps there will be even cheaper models like this X2 3600+

and about the 65nm prices wel nothing is 100% and we wont know their retail prices till they have landed in the stores and after the price gouging has gone.

Those are MY prices :p: I could have put $500 for the 5600 !!! ;)

Plus some roadmaps state that 65nm line of X2s may use the SAME naming structure (starting with 3800+) that they are now.

Point was that AMD can use higher clockspeeds in 65nm to have more expensive chips.

lol though yes i have to admit $325 65nm 5200+ does look nice :p:

Is there any signs of S939 DC price drops is what I'm interested in, and especially S939 Opteron DCs. Here in europe Opteron 165 has basicly costed around 310 - 320€ at the cheapest place u find for many many months now while X2 3800+ price has slowly but surely went down to as low as 220€. :confused:

Without an IPC improvement, a 3.2GHz X2 won't be competative against Conroe, so it's hard to imagine them keeping/starting prices like that.

$169 @ X2 3800+ is more like it. Hope this also affects Opterons tho, Opteron 165 should drop to 180 - $200 or so in that case or else it will be pointless to even sell them unless that's what AMD wants, shove the S939 Opty out of the doors already...

In light of new info from dailytech provided by Ubermann...estimated prices on upcoming chips have been changed and first post now includes the soon-to-be prices.

I for one am not at all excited about 3800+ X2 going against Conroe for obvious reasons. Old Slow tech vs New pwnage tech....just because the prices are similar ??

I really hope so, if they do I'll definately pick up a new 65nm dual core X2, but if it's only for AM2... I may have to jump ship... :(

Notice all the 1mb(per core) x2 chips prices aren't changing... Infact, if I'm reading that correctly, the 1mb(per core) x2's are going bye bye. Considering on the products with no price change they just put the same price as the updated price, but for those chips they list nothing.

Looks like AMD is trying to decide how much they want to bleed and are having internal arguments on the best amount to cut. They're trying to guess the availability of the Conroe on the market and popularity also.

How have AM2 shipments been doing recently ..anyone know ?

In regards to Dell taking all the Conroes I doubt they will to be honest. OK, their top end will, but I think they are more interested in really really cheap chips to improve their margins just for people who buy the $399 internet browsing and WordProc machines.

Or you could just enjoy your parts now and upgrade later.. Because I don't know about you but If I don't get to play WZ21 at half settings.. there is no way in heck I'm going to be remotely happy with that computer

overehre Single Core prices went down already a week ago.
Dual core stil costs the same money 250 for boxed 220 for tray.
When they go 170 orso im gettign one.
Maybe around time i familiarize with wich steppings are the best.

Z-Ram has more to do with Massive Caches like L3, mostly because that is where it shines.. Small Caches it actually performs worse

I wasn't implying it would be anything real soon, but I suppose it'll be more than a year until we see anything from them implementing z-ram. But the idea of consolidating the product line has some sense to it.

There hasn't been any word on the possibility of AM2 opterons, has there?

i would hope, for the "4x4" line it would be an excellent selling point for low-end workstations/servers, especially since it's been said that so far, only the FX line will work...

He says it when he says the battle isn't over core anymore. Until Conroe came along, AMD was intent on not doing anymore core improvements. Instead, hence forth improving IO and adding features for servers. The only agenda for core was to add more of them. Thanks to Intel, there will be IPC improvements in K8L. The scary part is that interview is recent and he's still preaching no more core.

Conroe is faster without overclocking, LOE.

It's all made up DoubleZero. Oh wait, it's not. Tis true about AMD driving Intel to create Conroe though. Loosing market share was a great motivator.

You may care for synthetic benches but that's not my case. I am not saying that conroe is slower than K8, just that it is not that faster as intel wants you to think. I would still get a conroe and overclock it to it's max stable cause its a kind of free power :) But when amd drops X2 3800+ to 160$ there is no chip from intel to beat a 160$ dual core @3Ghz in it's price/performance ratio

I don't know why you bothered with a strawman; you're busted as soon as anyone follows the link to the review, where they'll find more than synthetic and game benchmarks at 1024x768. An overl:banana::banana::banana::banana:ed $183 e6300 will easily beat a $160 x2 3800 @ 3GHz in p/p and it will be faster.

1) The Price for the e6300 isn't locked yet
2) it could be more
3) alot more
4) make that a hell of alot more
5) it still isn't out yet, so there is no comparison

anyway, just a few quick question before I return the 3500+ which i will ge tommrow from new egg.

1st When will these prices comeinto effect on the retail level will the be instant on the 24th? (obviosuly with a few buks on top for the e-tailer)

2nd will the X2 3800 really only be 160?

3rd Will the date be earlier because of the early conroe realease?

4th Will newegg.com just show a huge drop on the prices the day of the price cut?

its simple they have to... there will be vendors without small stock and fast supply that bring the new prices... where will you buy? yes the cheap ones even if you maybe have to add few $ more on shipping costs.....

so yes they will change the prices, shops are really running low stock already for these forthcomming pricedrops.

and yes its great calculating a 159$ x2 3800 with an asrock 65$ uli chipset. thats 224$ for the combo calculate this for conroe e6300 209$ + any 965 chip will cost about 115$ that'a 324$ and 50% more expensive... so its clear what will be the best price/performer maybe core will be a bit faster in games... but not that big difference with a 1,86 2mb versus a 2.0

AMD can not reduce their chips price more than Intel can. The production costs AMD more than Intel.
X2 3800+ is owned in every benchmark by E6300.

X2 3800+ will cost $169, E6300 will cost $183. The apopriate memory for the X2 3800+, DDR2-800 CL4 4-4-x cost more(more than the diference of $14) than the apropriate memory for E6300, DDR2-667 CL5 5-5-x.

Also there are a lot of more competetive Netburst chips compared to K8 X2.

I doubt the 6300 will cost $183 due to a number of reasons. I give it at least 210$ in US and 240$ in EU.

lol with that memory neither an X2 4800 doesn't beat the 6300. Another Intel ordered review :P the E6300 should be about 5-10% faster than the X2 3800 by my calculations @ the default frequency. (ofcourse no SuperPi or other stupid benches, just real world apps such as games, 3d/2d apps, etc)

So, for overclockers the E6300 is no doubt the choice, but for the most of the people i doubt they will choose E6300 over X2 3800 due to the higher price and small performance difference.
