I grabbed this AM2 setup really quickly for some DDR2 testing and wanted to share some results of my first look at it. The mainboard I got is nForce570 SLI powered ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe. Then I snatched a budget single core, Orleans 3200+ 2GHz that will be cooled with S939 AC Freezer 64 Pro, that fits AM2 with no problem at all. All this was paired with G.Skill's PC2-6400 2GB set on Micron D9xxx.

Alright... Mainboard was pre-flashed with initial BIOS 0202 and definetely needs a new updated BIOS. Very often, after saving or exiting BIOS rig just goes black and turning it off brings it back to life. Also, 95% of the time, restarting it from Windows ends with the same effect - screen goes black and PC needs to be powered down and up again. This is definetely something that needs a fix, but unfortunately there are absolutely no DOWNLOADS whatsoever for this mainboard on ASUS website, yet. But I still managed to get some pretty nice air results.

I could actually boot to Windows at slightly over 340HTT and lower memory ratio, but system would freeze few seconds into SuperPi 32M... Raising voltages brought no relieve. I might try a bit harder to find a solution, though...
On a side note, it looks like I did not get any boost from TRP=3 :shrug: Kind of odd... I'm gonna look more into it as well...

I was limited to CPU stability being on the edge past 2.95GHz. I did stick with multi x8 as I've been having some odd problems with x7 and high HTT at that moment. I'm pretty sure that with better ambient temps, maxing out BIOS's 400HTT would be possible ;)

Well, I'm not sure yet. I would need a new hold down plate with AM2 mounting holes. I will try next week, but I would really like to have a new BIOS before I play with single stage. Powering down and up all the time just gets on my nerves and I'm sure it's not good for e.g drives anyway.

Hehe, well don't get too excited about those voltage readings, man... AiBooster shows more/less what I set in BIOS, which was 1.55v. I can pass 32M @ 2.9GHz 1.50v but SP2004 needs a bump. Stock volts are good up to 2.7gish in SP2004, though...

What about timings 3-2-2 , 4-3-2 ??

thanx for the quick preview on air. i just grabbed an M2N32SLI and am just waiting for some memory before posting a similar type thread.

i have also been seeing about the same from most of AM2 chips i have had. 1.4v to 2.7GHz and then up to 1.57v usually for 2.9GHz prime stable on a decent air cooler or weak water setup. these have all been 3200+ or 3500+ all pretty much 0617/0618 i think.

hopefully the X2s perform that well with low volts....

AM2's IMC does not do anything tighter than x-3-3-3.0 at this moment, so you're not gonna see any "2s" for now ;)
I also don't think you'd see TRP or TRCD of 2 and decent speed on Intel platform, either. It's not D9 "Fatbody" anymore...

There are only a handful of people on the forums that would be able to reach cas 2 on DDR2 if they really wanted to...and you know you're one of them :D

odd, my msi k9n plat has the EXACT same problem.. i wonder if it has anything to do with nvidia's reference bios :(

also, two things that i'd like to know, if you don't mind :toast:
1. the highest the board can go with 1T cmd with 2x1gb in
2. the highest bootable HTT speed

I have too MSI K9N Platinum and problem with boot on high HTT. New bios and still nothing change.
And MSI ---> :slapass: this mobo in bios do not have vdd adjustment option; high HTT and multi x9 = blue screen in 3D or SPI, but 3GHz on air cooling (box) i have :D

OK, today is a day of good news :) I managed to get in touch with a great person (thanks a ton, man!) that knows a helpful someone at ASUS. This means, that I have a new BIOS!!! Yay! :clap:

I just flashed my M2N-SLI Deluxe with this new 0303 BIOS, dated 06/09/2006 and so far it looks promising. I don't have to shut down my PC all the time :) I'm back testing now...

So, the new BIOS that I just received, fixed this little problem for the most part. Still, restarting from Windows in OC conditions "kills" it but at least now soft RESET, instead of Power down brings it back to life. But definetely, I don't get this stupid "death" after leaving BIOS with applied OC anymore :) So, maybe like you say, it's some sort of a reference BIOS glitch :shrug:

I have just added 2 new screens to my 1st post, on a new BIOS already. It seems like I can't really get Command Rate 1T to work at this moment. After I apply it in BIOS, it just dies... I will play more with it though.
Highest I booted to Windows so far was 338x8 but it froze upon starting SPi32M. But 324x9 was no problem at this time...

The issue is DDR2 does not support cas2, so what the board is actually setting is anyones guess?

Lowest you will ever see is cas3 true and some tweaked out setting that people may think is cas2 but is not

So far I can't get 1T working on this board when playing with memory speed at and north of DDR2-800. Others have had more luck, but with a different board. It looks to me like a BIOS issue, perhaps. But AM2 does not seem to go very far on 1T - around DDR2-880 is max we've seen so far. But it doesn't look like 2T affects performace that much, by comparing my 32M times here with S939 at the same CPU speed.

One thing... Where do you think I can stick my multimeter probe in order to find some vcore? :) Maybe that choke's leg or where the cap is missing...? I can use some help, please :buddies:

yes, you can read the Vcore on the chokes.

looking at this last pic, that thermal interface between MOSFET's and the heatsink looks absolutely terrible... :(

BTW nice stuff Bachus... although I find it a bit funny to see (mid-range) air cooling on your pics... :p: you better sort out that mouniting soon. :D

Nice work Bach! It's not the ram or something else. I fully tested the asus am2 SLI board and had lots of problems running 3d with 1T north of 800 as well. Mobo just couldn't handle it like the Foxconn does.

Hey, Just to add what AM2 can do, I will post some results that I got with the Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe. I was able to get 2.8 ghz @ 1.3v Here are some benches.

Well, i'm testting a new system just like this one, only the CPU is different, i have a 3500+ AM2.

I have problems with the Gskill 6400HZ 2GB kit, the system doesn't boot at all, the only away that i found to boot the system was with a Gskill 4200LA 2GB kit. With the 4200LA kit the system boots fine and reach 667mhz@1T easilly and smooth.

With the Gskill 6400HZ 2GB kit, it's no go!! :shrug:

it's cares more about cpu mhz than memory clocks ;)

since the MC runs at cpu mhz.. efficiency goes up quite considerably as the cpu clock rises. makes it kinda tough to get any decent bandwidth scores with a cpu that can barely do 3ghz :(

oh hells yea. I got the same 0605 sticks of ram as you so now im really excited to get these clockin.

only problem is newegg sent the wrong CPU so i must wait i guess.

Don't get to excited... Because this Gskill rams aren't friendly with this Asus mobo.:slapass:

i went with the new foxconn nf590 board anyways so i'll most likely have varying results....hopefully good results though.

Even a biostar Tforce6100 AM2 would have been better. DIMMv upto 2.2v and CPU volts upto 2.25v thats right in the bios it sets upto a extreme inferno of 2.25v. I'm sure you could have reached the cpus full potensial with a board like that or a DFI.

2.2v isn't anywhere near high enough for the ram ;)

Yeah, I was running up to 2.5v to get 1000 mhz with my D9's, So I mean, You really need some voltage.

Honestly, I kind of like this board. But after now few days of playing with it and messing around with this "unofficial" 0303 BIOS, there are few things that bother be:

1. I can't for the life of me make this board run Command Rate 1T, even when memory runs @ DDR-667 clocks. System just doesn't POST after CMD is set to 1T. So what Vince has said above, I can myself confirm as well. Kind of makes you wonder as theior S939 mobos also had trouble running 1T at some point in OC.

2. System does not restart when OC'ed, period! Even with the new BIOS it just dies and does not reboot. Pressing RESET "fixes" it but that's not how it should work, right? All fine and dandy when it runs at default 200x10, though.

3. It seems to have a cold boot issues. Every morning, when I turn it on, it's boots but doesn't POST. Then when I hit RESET it just shuts down. When I turn it back on again, it boots and POSTs... Kind of annoying and I'm sure it's "BIOS fixable".

Well, you realy need more than 2.25v to run above DDR2-1000 and definetely to be able to tighten latencies all the way to 12-3-3-3.0 for some DDR2-800+ action.

Well, in my case 1T it's not a problem.

I have tried 3 different kits of ram:

- Gskill 6400HZ 2GB DDR2, doesn't boot as i said before.

- Mushkin XP2-5300 DDR2, runs fine 1T@533mhz, won't run above that even with Command Rate 2T.

- Gskill 4200LA 2GB DDR2, runs fine 1T@800mhz... :clap:

The most cheap and low-end ram in my case is the best of all 3 kits...:eek:

It seems that Asus is going to release a extended row of bios update as usual to make their mobos run as they should from the start...:slap:

Another thing, i can set any kind of OC, as i push a little bit my CPU clockspeed, the system goes off.:confused:

can you try something for me.

Use your 4200LA and set your Vdimm (ddr2 control Voltage) to 2.1 or 2.2V.

now install your 6400HZ and see if it boots.

I have found out on the M2N32-SLI, the Vdimm Always comes up at 1.8V and with Most low latency PC2-6400, this is not enough for reliable operation.

Already done that and no go. Tested the PC2-6400 on another system Intel P640/P5WD2 Premium and it run fine, there's no issues regarding the ram.

I believe that Asus needs to release a new bios update to fix this issue and others...

Well, I should have put my 1T observations in a different way... I can run 1T as long as and only at low HTT, e.g. 200x10 DDR2-800 1T (mem freq DDR2-800) is fine but not 240x10 DDR667 1T (also mem freq DDR2-800). In other words, only at or near stock 200HTT, which is a bit useless. But As far as I heard, 1T/2T does not make a lot of difference on AM2, even in sensitive benchmarks, like Sandra or SuperPi

As for your PC shutting down after applying OC in BIOS... As I mentioned above and I guess you missed it, THERE IS a new BIOS for M2N-SLI Deluxe but you won't find it on ASUS website and I have no idea why. You can download it from my webspace here --> BIOS 0303 (06/09/2006). Use built-in EZ FLASH and flash at stock, please. It fixed few quirks for me (including shutdown when exiting BIOS on OC settings) and I think it will for you as well. It still has problems (of which I mentioned above) but it's better than inititial BIOS 0202.

I was thinking same thing, but at least my set of F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ worked flawlessly at default 1.8v. There is something else in SPD that needs to be re-programmed and as I mentioned above as well, G.Skill will do it, in case particular set does not boot on AM2 platform.

Thats some impressive budget OC'ing on air (almost a 1Ghz OC!! used to seeing that kind've OC on a P4 not a A64), if it wasn't for Conroe I'd buy a AM2 system in a sec. How much did you spend exactly on it?

I thought you were on crack when I read that Bachus, I downloaded that BIOS from their web site a few days ago when I got my M2N32-SLI but your right, now its gone!

I don't understand, it is much much better than the original and so far I haven't seen a single issue with it. Or I should say, anything new that wasn't there with the original.

Every heatsink that uses standard retention mechanism for s754/939 will fit AM2 also.

There are new results in my initial post, under JUNE 22nd UPDATES! for MAX fully stable DDR2 8-4-4-4.0 clocks reached so far ---> DDR2-1120 @ 2.5v with G.Skill F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ! It betters my previous DDR2-1068 result thanks to some experiments with Drive Strenghts as well as switching to Yellow slots this time :) Pretty sweet clocks, don't you think? :)

Also, there is a new BIOS 0304 (06/15/2006) on ASUS website. In case it's down I have it hosted here as well. It did not fix "death syndrome" :) after Restart when OCed and I have no idea what it fixes then :(

BTW, I have started a thread in Xtreme Motherboard Vmods and any help finding vmods for this board is appreciated... I really want to see DDR2-1200, fully stable at 2.7vdimm :D

I must say, I'm quite surprised at how well this board overclocks, really :)

For 2.90GHz SP2004 and all other benches beyond that, I set 1.55v in BIOS. I really did not get around to checking voltages with DMM itself. But I think, it's very decent for Prime stable 2.90Ghz and 51C loaded temps.

mmmm i did a review based on a MI k9n 570 SLI Platinum and i'm working at this time in one based on epox MF570 SLI... the epox motherboard rocks but you can get the same clocks on bothg motherboards

using a 3500+ single core + zalman 9500 AM2 + Supertalent 2x512 T1066UX1G5 (1066 mhz @ CAS 5) + epox mf570:

I am thinking of adding a second 7600GT for SLI, anyone running a similar setup with a Sempron? I am also looking for feedback on the latest bios. My board revision is 1.03g. I have seen some results of the 2800 and 3000's hitting 350x8 for 2.8. I just need to get to 2.4 for time being which should be able to tie me over for a while till I can score on the price drop as I only paid equal of 50 shipped for my 2800+ retail.

Is any of the owners of the M2N SLI Deluxe 570 having cold boot and reboot problems also. Because I sure am when I overclock.

When I keep my computer at stock everything is fine and it will boot and reboot. But who buys this mobo and an X2 3800+ on Swiftech H20 to leave it at stock? NOT ME!

I upgraded my BIOS which has enabled me to get the HT over 300 (311 and my CPU x is 9 for a 2.8GHz oc exatly) which is a dream compared to the previous BIOS which was s***.

When I cold boot usually the computer locks on the BIOS splash screen, so I reset, get the "warning screen" reset again and usually I boot into the OS then and everything is very stable for hours and hours of use. However, I can't reset and I hardly want to turn off the computer and have to do that all over again.

So I am wondering if it is my own issue or if this is also happening to others.

specs:

CPU - X2 3800+
Mobo - ASUS M2N SLI DELUXE
DDR2 - Corsair XMS2 6400, 2GB 5.5.5.12 2T
PSU - Antec True Power 550
VGA - XFX 7900GT EE

BIOS is not 100% ready, first BIOS is not so good for OC, second fix that, but cold boot/reset problems when OCed is stil present, so i think the next one will do the job, did somebody try remove all PCI cards, what happend then?

And maybe people from Asus know how to fix, i will email them.

I have the same problems as jpennster, my 3800+ am2 is overclocked to 2.2ghz(a modest o/c) on stock voltages and stable in windows but once I reboot, my computer will just die. Power off/Power on will solve it but I would get a warning msg of a failed boot and my bios settings are put back to default. Quite annoying.

yesh it is hella annoying..... last night it was happening to me but it was midnight and I had to go to bed. Came back later the next day to turn it on and give me some beeping as if the memory was bad. *sigh*. So I pulled out one of the sticks thinking that was the problem. Restarted and then I got the BIOS screen and then it froze. Uninstalled a secondary hard drive and then it went into Windows XP. LOL

Everything is fine now. I'm back to 2.8GHz. I reach 2.9, however, 3.0 is always BSoD. So whatever. How much more is 100mhz except bragging rights which isn't worth much to me; don't have anyone to brag to. :D

There is a new BIOS for M2N-SLI, available on ASUS FTP server - BIOS 0402 (07/13/2006). You can either download it from the link above or thru Asus Update. I wonder why they kept it out for the whole month before putting up for a download... Anyway, let's see what's new and hope for a fix regarding restarting issues :)

UPDATE: BIOS flashed! I have not noticed anything new in BIOS. All devices have been re-installed upon logon to Windows, so there must have been a change with ACPI, I think. Restarting issue is still there, which kind of leads me to believe that maybe it's not the BIOS but something about nForce570 SLI chipset drivers that cause that? :shrug:

Ive been using the Bios revision 0402 since 2 weeks ago (got it from ocz) I believe the 0402 bios is beta.

I just hope this restarting issue is a bios issue and not the chipset itself.

No, i can't be anything of software, because software is dead when reseting, only BIOS counts, so drivers isn't the problem, BIOS or board, maybe new revision of mainboard will resolve problem or maybe is some other incompatibility, for exemple i had almost same problems with nf4 when my tv card was in last PCI slot, in first or second PCI slot problem dosn't exist. And now with MSI 550 AM2 when i cold boot it, i must do power on power off 3-4 times to boot into windows.

I agree, it must be something with the motherboard and not OS or drivers.

I think I'll stick with the 0304 BIOS for now until restarts are fixed.

I messed with overclocking quite a bit last night and realized that the mobo was more stable if you can keep the HT v @ 1.2v because as soon as I changed it, the computer wouldn't restart after F10 and I'd have to reset it. However, this low of HT doesn't help OCing above 2.4GHz (at least for me).

After careful tweaking I got my X2 3800+ at 2.85GHz (317x by 9x @ 1.55v) with an HT of 2.536GHz (4x @ 1.35v) and my memory at 815Mhz (533, /7, 5.5.5.12 2T @ 2.1). I ran 3dmark06 several times and ran 16mil pi in parallel for an hour and everything is cool, quiet and stable.

I'll do some more testing tonight. But its very fickle when overclocking and with the memory and HT even 0.05v makes a difference.

I plan also to buy ASUS board, but with 570Ultra chipset. But if there are same problems like with SLI version, i don´t want it :nono: These are serious issues, so i´m quite suprised, what it "does".

I have an MSI K9NU Neo - V for testing, with Uli 1657 chipset, which is really terrible board, unstable even at stock speeds, even worse is DDR2@800MHz with my Corsair XMS2 TwinX 6400 sticks - unstable as hell, im not able to run them at stock timings and 1T. Also no VCore options in BIOS and overvolting CPU core.

Maybe I will have to stick with the DFI again. :toast:

I just wanted to bump this thread to let those of us with this motherboard know, that I have a new BIOS on hand, I think it's still BETA (0503) dated 9/25/2006. Although, there is a reference to this BIOS on an official ASUS website, this version is nowhere to be found on their FTPs yet.

Now, the good news is that problem with restarts has been fixed. System no longer "dies" after reboot and this time it POSTs like it should. Now, unfortunately, there is a little something that popped up that has not been happening on previous BIOSes. Right before Windows logo shows up and OS starts to load, there is a momentary power off/on cycle on HDD, which YES, makes a "click" sound. OS loads and all is fine and dandy, though...

I'm trying to get the same person at ASUS I've been in contact with, to find out what can be done about it and hopefully, new BIOS will come out of it. That's why, I will not put this BIOS up for download just yet. Let's wait couple more days and see what happens, OK?

Apparently, there has been another BETA floating around ASUS's Technical Support (0601) since last month.

I have flashed it few days ago, but unfortunately, symptoms are exactly the same as with 0503 - look few posts above for explanation. I was told, that ASUS is aware of the problem with HDD's off/on before loading OS and are trying to fix it. But definetely, 0503 and 0601 do not have a problem with restarting, when overclocked, at least for me. That's one step in a right direction, right? :)

Anyway, I decided to add both BETA's to my host - feel free to play with them ;)
