7950GX2 ...anatomy/bench@quad

Let's start with some specs and inside photos of the 7950GX2 card....

I got only 14..:p:

Firts of all the gap between the cards is 1.5cm...:9..and the cards are palying idle to 67C....i tried with a delta fan 120mm and the temp went down to 42C..:D

The setup is the following..
CPU : Intel 830(955XE couldn't boot on this mobo... :( )
Mobo: Gigabyte 8N SLI QUAD ROYAL
Memory : Twinmoss ddr2 5-5-5 2 x 512 533mhz(G.Skill PC8000 4-4-4-5 could't boot too and with this mobo , every memory module i tried , it freezes at 260 fsb....nF4 for intel sucks..:( )

It took me a little time to figure out how i could play Quad SLi...i found the way...but the result with this CPU ''botllenecking'' to the cards sucks!(i will upload them in a little cause they are on an other disk)

With 4 Cards no luck to play Octal SLI..neither Quad...i only could play single SLi , that means 1 card...:(

I beleive this is the only miss with this card, cos of 3rd party cooling incompatability.

@eva2000 i have every kind of cpu...but mobos not...the motherboards are the probs....i will try tomorrow with an amd setup..:D

He probably means about octal SLI... + plus the drivers for 7950 are very new...they have been only released 4 days...:)

wow 8600 in 3dmark05 lol. Presumably thats the 2.8ghz P4 doing its thing? Any chance of overclocking the 830 a bit, see just how cpu limited that thing is lol.

this is the most expensive gpu solution I've ever seen.
Really wish dual quad would work but I don't think it'll ever happen.

Just looking at the pics again - any chance you can attmpt to interconnect to 2 SLI bridges - maybe this could unlock SLI - as I'd imagine without the birdges interconnecting all the card - it'd be a no go for sure.

SHould be an easy ( but tedious )soldering job between the 2 bridges ( but not sure what would happen - so careful.....)

Hey guys...do not criticize so much the score..i only did it to see if 4(4x2)cards can play together and for fun...when we will go for scores i will tell you..:D

@mikeguava the cards are 4 x dual pcb..:D

I tried on this mobo with SLI configuration to
16 x 16
8 x 8 x 8 x 8
16 x 8 x 8 x 0
3D1 to 3D1 connection(3D1 was the dual gpu on the same pcb Gigabyte's 6600GT's)

but with no luck to achieve octal..:(
Hipro will ''closely examine'' them though...but i can't quarantee nothin'...

@kIngpIn i think the best setup for those cards would be the 590 chipset with one X6800..:D

take the card apart and run it without the other card attached? maybe it will oc wonderfully this way.

anyone think that could damage it? you have 14 so maybe just try it one one rofl maybe it will clock to 700mhz easily on stock volts that way and 1ghxz with volts and water hehe one could dream.

With the auto detect , the freqencies goes easily to 550/700 from 500/600....but stock heatsink doesn't allow me to push them further without artigacts etc..:slapass:

The memories are 1.4ns chips...

But in the 4X 7950 you only have 2 sets of SLI'd 7950 that aren't interconnected. That's why I am thinking that connecting the SLI bridges would need to be necessary

But on this board you can't even run dual sli. So Gorillakos' setup as it is now (2x7950 sli pairs) isn't able to run as such. For now, this board can ONLY run ONE PAIR of cards in SLI. Plus, wouldn't he need another pair of connectors on the 7950's to link them?

so you did try to run the card while taken apart? only trying the side with pci-e connector obviously? did you actually try this???

@mikeguava...the 4 cards( 4 x2 i mean) have only 4 connectors that means 2 bridges...like the 7900GX2's..:D

The bridges are right...i tried to an FX60 today...i tried special quad sli drivers too...but they did not support 7950 yet..:(

@Stephen..the cards are fully connected...:(

If we can get drivers that work for quad I will be interested how much more cpu overhead you get for Quad over standard Sli .. hopefully it is not double and it levels out before that. Ideal would be no more at all. If it's double then 2001 is a no go and 05 might be too.

When the score is lower at some benches with 4 cards...you can see that the cpu score is lower than with 1 cards....it seems that stock fx60 is making bottleneck to 4 cards too..:D

He's talking about case-worthy Octal SLI....ATX form-factor cases only have 7 PCI 'holes'/slots. Each 7950 takes two of those slots/holes, and you'd need four, so that makes 8, one more than 7 ;)
