Time to Say Goodbye to my RD-30

Yep, you heard it right, I'm moving on from the RD-30... I think I was the first person to use this pump (2 years ago) and it has served me well. It is kind of funny how just now everyone is getting them. I've decided the new build (Beast 3) will not use the Iwaki. Max head will only be .6M less... It will make for a much cleaner install, be much quieter too. I haven't been excited about the new rig at all lately (been modding my car though :D ) but now with this new discovery of mine (probably not to all you guys) it has rejuvenated my enthusiasm for the project once again. Anyway, to all of you that are getting your RD's you will be VERY happy with them, they are amazing pumps. I will NOT be getting rid of mine so don't ask, these pumps are keepers!

When running them in series the second pump tends to make more noise than the first one. I haven't found any good solution to this problem yet, I'm currently undervolting them. In a couple of weeks when I've had my last exam and all the parts have arrived I'm gonna try to find a better solution. I thought I'd try to enlargen the channels, put a T-line + fillport between them, place blocks between them, run them in parallell and use a larger ID hose between them. Hopefully one of these things will solve the problem! Any other suggestions on what to do to silence the second pump?

I wish I'd bought Radiicals top instead, they have larger channels and there's a delrin version which looks great! The problem is that you have to buy them from australia which means expensive shipping.

If you put them in parallel youll have the same combined head as 1 pump... so no real advantage over 1 pump but double the heatdump.

Yeah I know, but I'll try anyway and see how it performes compared to series.

2x Vs. 1 pump ? I don't get it. just get a bigger pump if you want more head.

bigger pump = significantly greater heatdump and noise and size and so on (usually, at least for our uses)

@andersson: Keep us updated on that! I really haven't found a solution to the problem too (that one pumpe is louder), strangely on my tests it's always the first pump that makes more noise...

2 pumps parallel might work with these pumps, I do yet have to try it out. Maybe the head is good enough to provide more flow with a not too restrictive loop.

??? it may be by the time the water gets to the other pump,the flow is restricted putting more pressure on the second pump which has to work that bit harder.???

but will there be significant increase if theyre in series ?

im thinking of dual DDC for silence purposes next time i redo my rig :toast:

parallel: same max head, double max flow.

series: same max flow, double max head.

I was a bit peeved when i read above that dual DDCs produce a 'noise',what about two DDC+s with the plexitop tanks?Ive read it's quieter than the reg.plexitop...and mine is quiet enough,will that have the same noise problem?

EDIT:Its ok,just read Creidikis post,i was thinking in terms of series,not parallell.

I'm always confused about this series and parallel thing. Tell me if I am wrong:

Series: Assuming its only two pumps and some tubing. Pumps in series is when the outlet of one pump is connected to the inlet of another pump.

Parallel: Again assuming its only two pumps and some tubing. The two pump's outlets are joined by a "Y" merging into a single tubing.

Would 2 x Laing DDC-Pump 12V Ultra in series perform as well as 2 x AquaXtreme 50Z in series or 1 x Iwaki MD20RLZ?

Appreciate advise from you guys, the experts. :)

and a RD-30 sets you back $240 and then another $80-100 for a 24v PSU

24v psu? there is no need to buy one to run the pump in your case.

for the RD-30, a 24v PSU is required to run the pump, it doesnt run at 12v, and even it if did, there would be no point, as a D5 would do better than a RD-30 at 12v

80-100 bucks for a 24vdc supply? that's what i like to call "violent rape"

well you need one that can handle the 10amp startup requirement of the RD-30... there's plenty of other ones that cost less that would explode when you try to turn on the RD-30 though

You can get 3 D5's for same price!

I mean, the DDC Ultras are awesome and worth the money. But for $200 you can get a TEC and a 12V powersupply to run it, which will give you lower temps.

Long story short, I'd rather spend the $200 on some more xtreme cooling then on wc pump(s), but thats just me.

And I wouldn't but that's just me. Tec's are a PITA and rack up the electric bills, especially here in california. My rig needs to be running 24/7 with no babysitting. I am confident leaving my rig running without checking on it for weeks at a time. Can you say that if you were using pelts or phase? Hell no. End of story.

show me how to make a reliable 24v PSU that provides a constant 3a while the pump runs and then 10a for when the pump starts up

s-150's are only 40-50 bux guys for those that are wondering. running 2 of those pumps is kinda cool too, but the word "acrylic" scares me. I run true 24/7 too, (because I paid for the net, so my connection should always be doing somthing, hehe). I'd still prefer 1 pump loop myself. Let us know if that 2 pump setup is as quiet as your RD-30 Nik, as I don't have 2 of those and prob won't be getting it because I alrdy have an RD-20 atm. This week I'm working on getting my case cleaned up, hopefully I can post some nice pics for everyone.

No. According to this it's pulling 43.2W at full power. And this it's dumping 23.2W while pulling 38.9W.

At the moment, I'm planning on doing the conceptual stuff in SketchUp Pro and then the final version will likely be done in Solidworks. BUT I'm currently waiting on DangerDen to send a DDC+ so that I can get a really good look at the original top and take measurements. I love how incredibly fast they respond to e-mails :rolleyes: :stick:

Petra (if this IS your name, I only knew a GIRL named Petra :D ) I would not use that thread at all. Everyone is moving away from UNF and all american sizes. DD is using G 1/4" as am I with my res', there are lots of goodies for that thread size, temp probes, clear plugs that you can LED etc. You will have a hell of a time finding UNF hex plugs (if ever needed) for that size. IMO you should go G 1/4" or G 3/8" which cooltechnica has o-ringed plugs and barbs in that size, and they are killer. My .02

Yeah, that's why I've been bouncing back and fourth between 9/16" UNF, G 1/4", and G 3/8"... I kinda have a thing for the 9/16" UNF high-flows but realize that G 3/8" would be a better choice as it's somewhat hard to find good G 1/4" barbs in the US (especially since I refuse to use DD's current G1/4 barbs). The downside there is that the the G 3/8" fittings would likely run around $2 each...but, since Bruce over at AqX is currently my only source for both the G 3/8" and 9/16" UNF, I'll likely end up using the G 3/8" barbs. Still haven't really decided, though...nor do I have to just yet. :rolleyes:

G 3/8 is the way to go.

Petra, for the outlet water channel can you experiment with different sizing to see if making it larger will effect head pressure/flow. I ask this because I see alot of DDC tops that have 1/2" barbs but little tiny channels for the outlet. you also might try experimenting with a cone shaped outlet to see what that does for you.

I dont think the small outlet channels hinder anything, in fact they may help. If you look at the outlet barb on the RD for example, you will note how skinny the channel is. My guess is this is by design.

nik, I was thinking the same thing and that is why I wanted petra to try it.

My Panworld 30PI-Z-D 24v had very small ID on it's outlet, so I agree there must be a common reason for designing pumps with this characteristic.

Well I got the 2 DDC Ultras today. Inspected the tops, man they are a work of art! Alphacool did a great job with these, no doubt. I have already modded both of them though, lmfao. I enlarged the center inlet to the size of the tapped barb section. Below the center inlet barb it was like a 5mm hole, don't get that at all. Tis now bout 1/2" straight through. I used an old PLUG, like the one that comes with the pump and had it screwed in the center inlet and drilled from the opposite side. I did this as to not mess up the threads.

That 5mm hole is to mount a 5mm LED for some bling. See the Alphacool page.

Hm, so we've got Pump RAID 0 (Series) and Pump RAID 1 (Parallel). Why doesn't anyone do Pump RAID 0+1

Wouldn't it be a RAIP, redundant array of independant pumps? worse yet, does this make me a raipist? :shock2:.

I would imagine the small hole is meant to replace the inlet lip on the original housing, reducing backwash circulation in high resistance scenarios. I have no idea why a smaller opening would help at all though.

can you get these in the us? pm me if you can. acrylic doesnt scare me, ill take the top across the street from my work and have a new one cnc'ed :P
