AMD will come with an enhanced FX in june with 4MB L2 cache acording from one of my sources.. personally I doubt this info is true

I agree its not a flop.. but a mere transition.. fully expected of AMD and normal in my opinion.
It is not AMD that made it a so called flop but amd fanboys...
We knew and even AMD knew it wasnt much of a gain.. but a simple transition. But AMD fanboys for some reason thought it was gonna be one hell of a gain and so on and especially on AMDzone... "you're not seeing real benches, wait for real benches" as if they were any different.

It was the hype of AM2 that made it a so called "flop".. it did not meet expectations, expectations that AMD never intended.

then the fanboys moved on to K8L as their savior....... which is no where close to being even released for atleast a year in my honest opinion.

Then the lead from anand about "amd having an ace up their sleaves"... now they're going crazy over that.... making up expectations.


same goes for conroe... it built expectations...when the ES samples were released, it met our expectations and sometimes surpassed them.

a Big part of it comes down to price. everything cost money...

If I can spend 1/4 the price but be able to match the performace of a $1100 chip.. why would i dish out 1100... now i nkow what some of yu are going to say... most people dont OC... even then. the top line conroe holds it's own at way less the price...

Intel is about to regain the price/performance ratio crown.

Not quite True. When Athlon XP was released, the AMD "rating" was good. A XP 2500+, for example, was really like a P4 2500Mhz.. Now it's far from it. (numbers gone crazy) By this time, Intel was still better, but AMD cheaper. (and it's where most AMD believer started. It was a good chip, but the fan was so loud :p: ) Now it's the opposite.. AMD is better, Intel Cheaper and louder ;)

Intel "mistake" was the Prescott and AMD good move was the Athlon 64. That's all.. (sure the Netburst wasn't the best thing either, but AMD wasn't better at this time (Remember the first Thunderbird and Duron while P4 was introduced..))

Going Pentium 4 has been available in 3 sockets, Socket 423, 478 and LGA775.
In half the time period Athlon 64's have been available in Socket 754, 939, 940 and AM2.

Yeah, AM2 is not a flop, but maybe A64F is compared to the (soon to be) competition (read C2). Heck, even todays CD is faster.

Cheating or not, C2 is faster.
The K8 is cheating by having the memory controller in the CPU.
The Pentium Pro was cheating with a crazy 1 MB L2 cache.

The PD 900 also have 2 x 2 MB L2 cache (not 4 MB unified though), but no one calls that cheating. I wonder why..... LOL.

Well I think the difference between AM2 and LGA775, was that most Intel users did not want the LGA775. It was absolutely identical to S478 except for the socket itself, no new ram, no new ram controller etc. With the news reports of mobos being damaged (because of pins being on the mobo, not hte cpu) etc. nobody wanted it.

AM2 on the other had, was different. Nobody knew how it would perform, we all had our reasonable assumptions, but we had to wait and see. New memory controller, new socket, new ram. Then along comes Conroe. Mindblowing previews, expectations are running high. So AMD defenders, kept saying wait for AM2. Wait for AM2. Wait for AM2. You know it, I know it, we all read it for the last few weeks/months. So it is these defenders that set the stage for Intel defenders to call AM2 a flop.

We all knew AM2 would not have provided great performance, A64 by my knowledge is NOT bandwidth starved. Yet the defenders used it as a defense anyway.

So is AM2 a flop? Depends. To most intelligent hobbyists, no. We all knew the performance if there was any would be tempered. But to AMD zealots it is a huge flop, since they built up the expectation of AM2 to help defend against Conroe.

AM2 I don't think is a flop. FX-62 may be a flop if compared to Conroe price/performance ratio wise.

AM2 is not a flop but AMD pushing these transisional products out on the market kind of sucks. At least that's what was said each time Intel did. Hell, Even I said they (Intel) sucked for too many transisional Processors and chipsets. I still think the 915 through 955 with 3 different i925 was BS! THe differences are that many Intel users thought it sucked. Many AMD Fans never saw met an AMD FU that was not excused or defended.

They are also too expensive for transisional Products as well.

Gotta wait out two more months.

And, even once finally the excrusiatingly painful long wait is finally over, there is no guarantee it wont be just a paper launch or tight supply. Remember P3 Coppermine. EVERYBODY wantted one. Few got one. Remember the race to 1.0Ghz. Nearly all the big nameretailers were trying to cashin on the 1.0Ghz craze.. but few got any chips from Intel. And if you wanted to get one in a store it was even worse.The supply situation wasn't fixed for over half-year. Similarly, there were massive shortages of chipsets, and to make matters worse that whole RDRAM fiasco, and hundreds of thousands of motherbaords recalled. AFterall, that is how VIA nearly got 50% of the marketshare overnight.

Lets just keep our gruby fingers crossed something like that doesnt repeat.

How can the word "cheating" be used seriously? How is it "cheating" to include something in a microprocessor design? There is nothing stopping AMD sticking 4MB of L2 cache in their next processors, and then Intel sticking 8MB in, and so on.

It's not "cheating", its just design.

There's a lot of reseach you need to do Bro! Conore = Kick Ass=P Games are where it really kicked the crap out of anything AMD has until K8G launches and even that is a wait and see deal.

The Frames Per Second to Dollar Ratio also is where the FX anything is being slammed all over the place. Then add to this Heat, Power Draw and still better than AMD platforms and AMD really has a tough road ahead. Their biggest problem is costs and folks running out to by now will be kicking themselves just as they back from July 2000 to Sept when the bottom fell out of the Athlon Market then as well.

As for Kingpin, let's pull the head out of Green Sand for a minute? You're talking about $1000+ processor and how much for the cooling? That's $1,XXX to outgun a Processor that will cost about $520 WHEN IT SHIPPS by July 23rd. Remaining loyal to AMD is one thing, trying to justify doing so is another. Yes Xtreme Systems is about Extremes but Extremely Stupid is not one the Extremes.

You have to admit, FX-60 beats the :banana::banana::banana::banana: out of any of its generation CPU at Intel. But Conroe is another generation of CPU, It damn well better beat the FX-60.

As of Cheating... IS this guy off his rocker? Intel processors have been known to benefit from large amounts of Cache. Thats why AMD went with a Integrated Memory Controller. It cuts down on latency on memory hits. AMD doesnt benefits like the Intel CPU's do.

How does Yonah do in 64 bit? Because I've only seen 32 bit. It did well in 32 bit. I want to see 64 bit benches. I bought the FX-60 because Its a nice processor, It makes my penis feel complete. :D I've seen Kingpin pull some CRAZY mad fresh bandwidth with the new AM2. not sure if its record breaking yet.. But we will see.

There are some very good designs that would have costed too much to build and were left on the cutting room floor. Intel walked away from their Timna and went with something cheaper. AMD stuck with their K8 and sold it at a higher cost. It performed well but was harder manufacture, slow to RAMP up and still took AMD 5 more Quarters to turn a REAL profit. So goes the trade offs. It's not that AMD was great, it's that Intel slipped, flopped and floundered. AMD stepped into a VOID. Now that they seem to have their footing, AMD will have to make sure they don't slip, flop and flounder. It is wayyyyyyy easier for Intel to fill AMD's VOID than AMD to fill Intel's.

A guy on another forum asked"What's AMD's AM2 outlook for the next year?" My answer is hope Intel screws up somewhere.:) I'm sure Intel was wishing for the same when X2 launched.

I have a 3500+ and don't run 64bit, I could care less. SO does most of the Market or more folks would be using it. I didn't buy an FX-60 because I don't worry about MY E-PENIS, though my Wife likes my real one:D IMHO, the FX60 costs about 50% too much. More power to those who think it has a fair or nice price.

When Windows Vista drops, you will start seeing alot more people switching to 64 bit. I was also being facious about the penis. I got the FX-60 because I could basically, same reason I will get the FX-62.

First of all, Yonahs are only 32bit. Second, Yonahs overclock FAR better than current AMD CPUs, which in the end makes it a better value. Just curious, why do you want 64bit benches? Are you using a 64bit OS?

I'll worry about Vista when it gets here in or about Jan-07. I'm sure if I wanted a FX-62, it too will be a lot more affordable by then as well. I'm getting Conore and I'm sure it is 64bit enabled and I still will not use a 64bit version of MS-WXP. Or I could then buy the 65nm version of the FX or whatever. Buying FX-62 is not very smart right *now.

I think you mean 03 ?

03 is now the most graphically orientated 3dmark bench now so it is mainly k|ngp|ns video cards running at 1023/1062 ( 2100 effective ) that is doing the damage. It's not the cpu it is expertise by the bencher and nvidia creating the big score.

The only test in 03 that is cpu bound is GT1 and you only get 7.6 points per frame I seem to recall.
