Thanks for the info. Looking forward to your results. On water my board is good up to 9*450 with 1.6v on the NB and 1.65v on the SB. Don't think I would be comfortable pushing those kinds of volts on air. Hopefully the SEII won't need those volts to push it that fair. Again...much success Bro!
Ok, I just got the board. Board revision 1.03G, BIOS 0802.
My current rig:
- 780i ASUS Striker II Formula
- 2 x AData Extreme 800+ DDR2
- 2x 8800GTX ASUS
- 1 x ASUS Xonar PCI
- Enermax 720W
I changed the motherboard in the first place from evga 680i to 780i and booted old vista32 installed with the evga and vista recognized all the new devices. My surprize was that ethernet ports was not functioning after resume from sleep mode. I did not know what happend in the first place and i suspected the nforce drivers were not good because they are not certified for 780i.
I started with fresh install of vista32, formated the vista system partition .. , installed the recomended 9.46 drivers from nvidias site and everything worked, until the next resume from sleep mode :D , after this resume i have no luck reviving my ethernet ports. Vista is sensing if the ethernet port have link or not (if i plug out the cable) but i have no received packets !!!
I have no errors in device manager, event logs are not containing problems regarding the two ethernet devices. I even tried disabling all the unused devices like HD Audio and firewire. I tried all the bioses from ASUS support site including the latest 902 but no change. :brick:
Nforce 780i drivers that i used are:
nForce 9.46WHQL Certified
Version: 9.46
Release Date: December 17, 2007
Operating System: Windows Vista 32-bit
Language: U.S. English
File Size: 43.1 MB
ok, first problems:
-CPU Fan will not adjust and stays at 100% no matter what you put in bios
- Cant Boot with 4GBs of OCZ 1066 SLI Ready memory unless I bump the voltage to 2.1. With my striker extreme booting at default speeds with default voltage was no problem
Anyone else not getting NB/SB temp readings in windows? Or broken core temps on an e8400?
Other than that I'm having no problems with this board, much better than my reference 680i.
edit: and if anyone is interested, I had this board stable at 500fsb on a dual core with 1.28v NB (stock 1.2) and 1.26 CPU VTT
mine ships tomm. and i'll have it put together with an e8400 by next weekend.
Hi bud just had this Mobo put it in, mind you I,m not that hot at OC but put it straight to 1333 and put v core volts to 1.3, Bios 901
It posts then goes to blue screen and keep saying hardware malfunction contact vendor.
Lowered the fsb to 1200 and it would load, what am I doing wrong ??????.
Anyway took mobo back out and put other mobo back in, what shall I do any help would be great please:shrug:  .
Help £200 mobo just sat here:shocked:
Why didn't you try to run it at stock speeds and then move on... was it undervolting the CPU ? bluescreen in windows you mean ? did you reinstall the OS ?
Heres pictures of every screen of my bios, check see how yours is different, other than that I can't really help you.
BTW loadline calibration disables vdroop if you enable it.
bios pics
I think not so many people have got this board yet, that is why this thread is slow. On the asus boards, however there semm to be some movement...
I received mine on Thursday, and immediately popped it in. I "upgraded" from an ASUS P5E X38, so that I could run SLI 8800 GTS 512s.
I had a Q6600 running perfectly @ 3.6GHz w/1.425V on the X38 board. I can't replicate those OCs with this board. Fastest I've been able to achieve is 3.15 @ 1.5V (loadline calibration enabled). I tried updating my BIOS today to 0902 (was 0601)... and I'm getting the dreaded CPU Init loop now. I tried slower RAM in one slot, etc etc, and I don't know what else to do.
I don't like this board. I'm thinking of RMA'ing it and getting an EVGA 780i instead. It doesn't seem to overclock as well as other boards, and the performance isn't that great. My X38 board w/single GPU @ 3.6GHz got 15,800 3DMarks (06), this board @ 3.15GHz (max stable I was able to achieve) got 16,200. 400 points better? Not the improvement I was expecting to see at all.
I have a 110 CFM fan blowing directly onto the NB/mosfet area, and yes, its loud as hell.
One problem I had with this board, is that if i reset my bios, it will fail to boot, and get stuck on CPU INIT. The only way to get it to then boot is to pull out 1 of my 4 sticks of ram.
With 3 sticks in it will post, I don't even need to change voltages, and I can just turn it off and put the 4th stick back in and it will post again. The bios seems rather buggy.
LOL Striker strikes again
LOL :lol2:
Indeed. And imagine that they have already released 5-6 bios... :p:
So far it has been a bit annoying to overclock this board.
It seems to need very high volts on everything to get anywhere on it.
And for some reason, as soon as I go over 1200mhz on the mem, performance drops HUGE.
1200mhz = 1180mb/s read, 46ns latency.
1210mhz = 9500mb/s read, 65ns latency.
I made the experience that the northbridge is very hot even with stock voltages:( . Do you share the same experience?
I have been playing with one of these over the weekend, kit as in my signature. Using the 0902 bios: a few observations
1. My 2 sticks of OCZ 9200 runs 5-5-5-18 at 1200mhz @ 2.34volts fine, but won't do much more than that. Westsideplaya - I'll check on your latency change when I get chance.
2. The board has an odd glitch with the voltage (I don't have a voltmeter to check beyond what software is reporting). With 1.6925 selected in the bios and loadline calibration enabled, it gives 1.60 according to CPUID under win XP. Set the voltage to 1.70, and CPUID then gives 1.712. This means that, at least for me, I cannot get a VID between 1.60 and 1.712.
3. Northbridge temps in bios get to 50-60c with an 80mm fan pointing at it, I'm running 450FSB with 1.48volts for NB set in bios. The NB runs hot, but hasn't got a lot hotter as I have raised the voltage a bit and added a fan.
4. The 0902 bios seems pretty stable, but after a day or so of playing I'm a bit underwhelmed by what I have so far under phase - my QX9650 ES is prime stable at 4.5ghz with 1.60v, losing stability up to 4.75ghz, and given the cost of this CPU I don't have balls to be playing with volts above 1.71 at this stage (once I forget how much it cost me I might...)
QX9650ES
Asus Striker 2 Formula 780i 0902 bios
2 X 1GB OCZ 9200
2 X 8800GTX SLI
Thermaltake toughpower 750w
Toshiba 47wlt66
The only way I've seen to measure voltages correctly on this board is to use the ASUS AI Suite software. Everything else shows 1.35v when using 1.44v.
edit: The voltage monitor in bios is also correct
Westsideplaya - I'm getting something similar in memory perfromance around 1200, but not as marked:
As set in bios
1200mhz 5-5-5-18 Everest mem latency: 44.7, mem read: 11786
1227mhz 5-5-5-18 Everest mem latency 45.7, mem read 11660
Boot at 1200 then raise FSB so mem at 1227 gives latency 43.5, mem read 12101
Jeremy 617 - have you checked those voltages with a volt meter? I was under the impression that CPUID was usually pretty accurate (something I could easily be wrong about).
No, but the asus software matches the voltages in the bios very accurately, and I'm 100% positive my cpu isn't stable at 4.4ghz with only 1.34v. :P
ordering mine 2morrow =)
Anyone else find the n/2 setting does not work with an e8400?
Jeremy 617 - Okay, you have convinced me for now. This is bad news for me: it means I am having to give this chip 1.68v under phase to stabilise it at 4.5ghz on this board, while I am informed by Johnny Bravo (who I bought the chip from) that it would run happily at that sped on an ABIT quadGT with just 1.58V on AIR.
Phil the Greek - I had a quick go at setting higher multipliers (didn't have much time I'm afraid), and couldn't get the board to post with a multiplier at 13 or above regardless of how low I put the FSB. I started checking the 12 multiplier, and got no dice there either, although I ran out of time to test it thoroughly. So up to an 11.5 multi is best I can confidently confirm thus far with the 0902 bios and my QX960ES.
Hi Family Man - yes I have tried with LL calibration enabled and disabled.
I've a problem here: Yesterday, i put in my e6700 into the Board (bios 0501). It wasn't set right, wanted to run @ 3500MHz, i changed all settings to default no overclock etc. I installed windows and drivers and turned off the sys.
Today i wanted to start it and nothing: Lights are on, display says CPU INIT. This dump error like the striker 1 had too. I've here Crucial Ballistix Rams 8500er and Mushkin EM2. One dimm, two, (tried both sort) nothing. CPU replaced, nothing. Whats up here? Neither CMOS CLR nor combined without battery works.
Ok guys, its working again. After a long time without battery i was able to boot again und flash 901. :) :)
http://i28.tinypic.com/r1k7rk.jpg
This is my setup, Striker II Formula + E8400 + GT SLI ...
BIOS looks like Striker Extreme, options are the same ... because nF680i NB this mobo has FSB holes again ... around 400MHz FSB is biggest problem with stability ... i am now at 420MHz with E8400 at 3780MHz ... with stock Box cooler ...
This board hate higher voltages to chipset, special Thermal protection (under orange heatsink with Asus logo) shut down the mobo, when temp of NB is higher then 90 ... and this temp is easy to reach ...
This mobo is again pretty hot, and without water setup is not possible to reach high OC ...
I've ordered one of these. The memory holes don't worry me but the reboot problems are a concern. Having to remove one DIMM is a new one :)
I like machines that boot and reset easily after going too far, it saves a lot of hassle. Oh well, we shall see. Shame my E8500 only ha a 9.5x multiplier and is not higher.
Regards
Andy
yes, last bios flashed but hole at 400 is there ... now i am pretty stable at 475MHz! With only little NB voltage ...
My max prime stable is 481 x 9.
But I've found that any FSB over 450 results in huge drops in memory performance.
I lose about 2000mb/s on read, and latency goes up by about 20ns.
I have yet to resolve this issue. Different mem, different timings, volts, none has worked.
And it is like an abrupt wall, 450mhzx9 with mem at 1200 is about 11.5gb/s read and 45ns latency. 451x9mhz mem at 1200 is 9.5gb/s read, and 65ns latency.
Even at lower or high memspeed, the performance is still cut drastically on mem.
Even with the latest 1001 beta bios.

Over 430MHz memory performance rapidly decrease ... it normal on every nF680/780 boards ... because higher multipliers in NB/MEM ... best settings are below 430MHz ...
Hi there
I will soon to be a owner of Striker II Formula, I just have one quick question for you guys.
I am currently using a E8400, may I know do I need to flash / upgrade the BIOS of my new Striker II Forumula in order to make it can recognize mty E8400 when I receive it next week ?
Also do you guys know which BIOS will be included when the board is coming out from the ASUS factory ?
Please kindly advise.
My rig config :
MB: Striker II Formula
CPU: Core 2 Dual E6400
HSF: Arctic Cooling Freeze Pro 7.0
Video Card: Asus GeForce 8600
HDD: WD Raptor 74GB
PSU: OCZ 700W PSU
RAM : 2 X Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400 DDR2-800
CL4-4-4-12 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit
Optical Drive : Samsung 16X DVD/RW
Case : Lian Li PC-60 Aluminum Case
OS : Windows Vista 32 bits
if you set higher FSB, multiplier NB/RAM needs to switch to another one (with Linked and Unlinked too), latencies are with higher multis worst - performance is lower ... with nForce is important to fing best ratio NB/RAM/FSB Frequency for maximum mem performance, High FSB is not too important ...
I dont want to rain on any ones party , but after reading this thread , the Striker 2 seems like it has the same problems as the 680i had ,and that was it was a poor overclocker, and sometimes took pple days even weeks to get a half decent over clock , is this the Asus striker 680i revisited? I am beginning to think so.
But dont come down on me guys I dont own Striker 2, I am just baseing my comments off this thread and I was a Striker Extreme 1 Onwer.
Don't worry about raining on anyones parade, the 680i and 780i have some, lets call them "interesting features" to overcome ( or fail!). They have memory holes, they don't have as high an FSB and clock for clock perhaps are slower than the Intel chipsets. They do let you do SLi easily though.
As regards comments above on low memory performance as it goes higher. I have not got my Striker yet but from my experience of the 680i, although you could do massive RAM speeds all would be slower than keeping it linked and in sync and with the tightest memory possible, at least in Pifast and 3dmark lobby. I was running with an X6800 with unlocked multiplier which allowed me to run 3-3-3-6 1T and then really right subtimings. The subtimings really knocked the performance up again.
I'm expecting the same again for this 780ione. Problem is I have now got a locked E8500 so of couse to get cpu speed I might have to loosen off the memory.
Regards
Andy
no, i am talking about internal NB frequency/RAM frequency multiplier switcher ... in NB are lot of multis, because you have Unlinked mode, and NB needs to have many options for frequency you want ... and every multi has own latencies and performance rating ... this multi you can change only thru WPCREDIT utility ...
Could someone post a link to the 1001 beta bios??
Hey guys. I bought this board from ZipZoomFly, along with an E8400.
I cannot get the board to post at all. The little LCD screen just says CPU INIT. I've educated myself on the ways to get around this problem, and I've tried the following options. I don't know if this is common, but before the power button is even hit, the LCD screen displays the CPU INIT.
I've swapped CPUs; I dropped in an Intel 3.00ghz 531 that I know works.
I've ensured the board was grounded, all 9 screws tightly fastened. Board removed and reinstalled, case is a Lian Li PC-S80.
I've tried using all four RAM slots, with two different sticks of RAM, DDR2-800.
I've used two different power supplies, both 600W Enermaxes, SLI certified.
I bought a molex to 8pin connector and used that instead of the 4pin connector for the P8 power connector.
I've reset the BIOS using the switch on the back of the board, several times.
I've taken the battery out, let the board sit overnight with the power disconnected and the power button held down.
I've tried booting with the video card in, and out.
I'm out of ideas. :shakes:
This Nvidia Board seems got lot of problems, right?
May be i should keep my X38 and go Dual 3870x2 for quad GPU, although i like Geforce better, buy what can i do?
I dont have any these problems With my XFX version..I also dont have any of the problems some have had with the EVGA version...Personally I think the 780i is a awesome mobo. A lot better than the Pita striker extreme board I retired..Ive had this board at 510fsb wasnt prime stable but did get into windows...
Put everything together last night. Had to manually install Vista64 patch KB929777 to run 4GB of ram w/o bsod's.
Man, I did the opposite. X38 was my best mobo so far but HD3870 Crossfire sucks big time. I don't know about HD3870x2 but I guess it's just as bad. Horrible driver support. Same crappy perfomance in CF after 7.11, 7.12 and 8.1, single card can't keep up w/ 1920x1200 resolution. Reviews say it scales better but they omit the fact "when it works or is supported". SLI may not increase a lot of perfomance but a single 8800GTS 512mb can hold pretty well. Luckly, COD4 loves SLI. I still get occasional BSOD's on my EVGA but I know it's the Nvidia driver. Whatever, I'm still happy.
Sigh... X48 or 790i...
Don't think the signs are looking good for the Str II. CF still having issues.
Single GT200 & X48 ftw?
/sigh
I just found out something interesting with this board.
Something under the heatpipes is apparently very sensitive to heat. I unplugged my 110cfm fan blowing on the nb/mosfets and found out that it immediatly made my compter so unstable i couldn't even boot into windows. Plugging the fan back in I could then immediately boot into windows at 8 x 500 with 1.3vtt and 1.3nb and prime 100% stable.
My NB temp in bios, with the fan plugged in @ 1.3v is 54c, with the fan unplugged, it was 63c.
So if you're having trouble try hanging a fan in front of your NB.
That's what I did:

I like the consecutive serial numbers.....
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t...rjock/red2.jpg
No crossfire drivers for for XP yet, they are soon to come according to HIS tech support.
For what it's worth, my framerates do increase though when I enable CF with current 8.1's though.
Nice, Just got my 3870x2, drop out my 8800GTX which cannot Play GearOfWars, soon as i put in the 3870x2 (Firmware 8.45 Beta), it runs the game smoothly. Will get another one when the FireX driver comes out, i think this is not too bad than the Nvidia solution.
BTW, it still has the same problem with dual core card jus like my old 7950GX2. When i use my apple 2560x1600, when game switch from window to game screen, there will be lots of green dots, i have to set game no full screen and reset the resolution again. Anyone know wuts the problem really..
I've RMAed my board. And bought a Striker Extreme.
Anyone want's to buy my replacement S2F, or trade, PMs are :welcome:
had a 780i evga cmos died the 1st week and after a month of waiting for evga and there rma dept. i grabbed a striker 2.i should have a 2nd tommorow the unpluging and pluging the ps to post it alittle bit of a pain in the ass.the whole 780i chipset has just helped my grey hair.
Mine arrived yesterday but I have not set it up yet. The main heatsink is screwed down which is a first, can somebody tell me what the quality of the thermal paste thickness is under there so I can decide whether to unscrew it or not? In the past Asus have been a bit blob happy with their heatsinks but as this is screwed down I wonder if they have been more careful this time.
I like the idea of a reset button for CMOS, the LED lights showing voltages seems a waste of time, I have never seen so many fan connectors on a motherboard  ( none of which I am going to use, not even the cpu one ;) ) and in general it looks pretty good. Of course it hides a 780i chipset which need a lot of effort to bend to your will, if similar to 680i so I guess I will have a few tough days ahead.
The BIOS makes me laugh, all those voltages! There must be a billion permutations. I've taken some benches on my P35 P5k to give a comparison in SuperPi, Pifast and 3dmark2001 lobby and will post them up when I get the Striker II working.
Regards
Andy
I love this motherboard :)
Slow to boot after changes but the button to boot and the reset and clrcmos buttons for out of case benching are a real boon.
I had zero problems setting up, all went smoothly. Hits 480FSB with a few voltage increases and is rock solid. Here's a Superpi all air cooled.
http://www.zen141854.zen.co.uk/780.jpg
Not bad for one evening, can probably get it below 10s like my Asus Intel P5K with a bit more effort, so this talk of 780i being slower than Intel is not really valid I think.
And of course it does SLI .. blew away the top 8600GT 3dmark2001 score without even trying ...74k....
Two things to note though, my E8500 will only do half mulitpliers apart from x6, so setting x8 inthe BIOS will result in 8.5. Also, the northbridge or MCP or whatever it is called still gets warm to the touch, which is good in that it shows that it is working, but it also shows that if it gets warm to the toucn with ambient in my shed of 5C and 200cfm blowing over it then it will get a lot wamer at room temp and those small included fans.
Great all round board though.

Andy

100% air-cooled. NB could cook an omlet but hasn't caused me any problems.
I have a P5N-T and am considering exchanging it for this board. Is it worth it? Are there differences in the OC ability or is it the same chips that have the same capabilities (multi, fsb, overvolt, etc). By stepping up to this board, do I gain anything other than the CPU INIT display?
For a start you need to remove the display, because it polls all the time it slows down SuperPi and other benches ;)
What FSB are you getting with your P5NT? You get loads of options with the Striker II but it still has to handle a 680i / 780i chip so that means you need to deal with lots of heat and have good memory that can do low latency.

Andy
I am just having problems getting stability at stock setting much less trying to OC it yet. I am using default FSB 1066 if I remeber right and 800 for the mem. I was mainly curious if anyone knew if these two boards were base on the same alternate design ASUS uses and if there were different hardware components that affected the overclockability.
Polling display? That seems silly. Seems better off with some event driven model, maybe its own pic or atmega chip if it want to poll.
Well, mine just died.
I just reinstalled vista x64, left it alone for a while, came back and it was in sleep/hibernation. So I pressed the power button for it to come back on and then got up to get a drink. After it gets back into windows the siren on my ultra goes off (the ones that go off if you turn it on without the 2x pci-e power connectors).
So rebooted it, got back into windows okay, but now I couldn't get on the internet, the ethernet ports weren't working. So I turned it off again, try to turn it on, and get CPU INIT, and as far as I can tell, its totally dead.
I'm going to blame this one on vista.
Got the board today, tests with 4GB 8000 Reaper X and Q9650.
To start board does not like 9 multi
8 is ok but max fsb =5% over stock base FSB so 1333+5%, 1600+5%, more with duals but not much more with quads.
4GB running memtest clean V2 (brutal) 1000MHZ 1.85V, TRFC 52 was key ;)
early findings on new bios I can't share
Well, I gave up on trying to fix it and went to class.
Came back, didn't change a thing, turned it on, and it posted.
quads man...you need to read what I posted ;)
duals clock higher, quads are a mess, also 4GB and 8GB are hard with quads, lots of rules.
QX9650 @ 9x450 with 8 gigs ram..
http://www.anandtech.com/weblog/showpost.aspx?i=373
Although you cannot say much about the new BIOS does it allow half multipiers?
I have a 9.5x E8500 here and it only has options of 7,8,9 in the BIOS which actually equates to 7.5, 8.5 and 9.5 in real life! I can't do full mulitpliers though like 8x400 for instance. Very strange how Asus can allow a BIOS to go out like that, they must have had Wolfdales for ages .... sigh.
Regards
Andy
Is it possible Tony to put out a sticky topic on what those rule are to get these quads running on 780i with or with more than 4 gigs... as you got ya q6600 booting at 400 with the SE....but I too have the best ram stability/clocks with TRFC 52, while the Gskill kit sets in SPD 45 for it... at 1000mhz 2 volts.... Might grab the Reaper kit as one of the Gskills kits died on me ( it was erratic from the start ) 780i XFX board is ordered....
Gary had 450x9 yes, but it was apparent that the board was liable to fall over during severe stress testing, Raja found exactly the same.
During my tests with striker1 i found the "rules" as i call them when using quads and posted about this on the ocz forum, the issue is most of you guys will not be happy running 3.33 when you Q6600 does 3.6+ easy so you tend to ignore what i posted.
Striker and striker 2 Formula are ONLY good with QX cpu's as the multi is unlocked and you can get close to where you need running a higher multi, if you are looking for FSB overclocking get a dual core although how much over 500 780i will do i have no idea.
The rules with 4GB 2x2 with a quad.
tRFC, you have to tune this, big impact on vdimm and stability
FSB has to stay to the sweet spots, 9 multi has issues for some reason also.
For me 8x1333, 8x1600, 8x1667 all worked well with async and 4GB at 1000, 5-5-5-18 tRFC 54 and 1.85V vdimm. At these FSB's the board sets exactly 1000 for the memory and weirdly this seems to have an effect.
Im still testing, but end users who we helped over at OCZ who followed these rules have had no issues, so there is something to them.
I have another interesting "feature" with my FSB and memory. I am running linked and sync mode so 1600FSB (400 real money) gives RAM speed of 400 as expected, but when I run 1872 (468) and expect the memory to do 1:1 again it is actually doing 15:16 ratio and the RAM speed is not 936 but 877.
Are there only certain FSB's where the ratio stays 1:1 and elsewhere it gives best approximation?
Regards
Andy
Does anybody has running the striker II formula with Crucial Ballistix 8500er without any problems?
Yesterday evening, i overclocked the ballistix up to 600MHz 5-5-5-12, vDimm 2,25V, Chipset 1,26 if i remember correctly. Worked fine, primed for about 2 hours then i shut down the system. this morning, i tried to boot it up and again cpu init error. Bios 0902, hasn't booted anymore, atm im leaving it without battery because i hope to get it alive again.:(
I hand tuned every setting on the board to get that benchmark stable. ;) But it goes to prove that if you work long enough on it, the board will reward you with very good performance. However, testing with the 1001 BIOS I am no longer stable at those same settings, trying to dial the board back in right now.
The 1001 is better in several areas (FSB holes have shrunk, 1T at 800 is working again), but it changed all the rules on tuning the board. It has been like this since the 0701 BIOS. The board (any 680i/780i) is just like a duck, it wakes up in a different world everyday. ;)
im at the point and going to a x38 chipset.or a 8400.this mobo hates the q6600 go.
Does anybody know how to boot from USB on this board? I can't boot from USB. So I can no longer flash my custom 8800 bios.
thanks tony result for me!!!!:)
