ASUS P5B-Deluxe; Problems & Fixes

Sorry if this has been asked before. Is there any way to monitor nb and sb temps? I have a laser temp probe that I use, not very convenient. Today I took off both heatsinks and applied as5. They were pretty easy to take off, but the stock tim(was dried like glue) was not easy to get off. Before I was getting temps around 60c on both with my laser. After, they're below 40c. Looks like the stock tim doesn't do much. It wasn't hard to do and didn't take much time. I would recommend for anyone wanting to lower their nb and sb temps to do this.

I know that the software temp moniters are pretty much BS, but the NB and SB are scalding hot to the touch, even at the lowest voltage, and it indicates an idle of 43-45° C.

I have verified that my RAM is capable of 1000mhz at my current settings using higher dividers and low fsb, but I can't get the fsb over 458 at 1:1 no matter what I try.

Since I have water, I tried increasing my CPU vcore to over 1.55v at one point and that did nothing. Does that probably indicate it is my P5B-D that is the bottleneck? Or can some C2D e6300's just not push over ~3200mhz?

For reference, I can run stable at 450 mhz fsb with:

vcore 1.4 (i didn't tweak this to perfection, the water takes care of it)
vdimm 2.25v
vfsb 1.45
vsb 1.5
vterm 1.3
BIOS 804

I have tried maxing out vterm and vfsb but that didn't help either. Anyone have any thoughts?

Vfsb is better left @ 1.4v

shifty803,my 6300 does 3.4ghz with 1.32vcore.

today i did a science mark two and pi 1m test at 3.8ghz.i got 2141 on sm2 and a tad over 15seconds on pi 1m.

my settings were-
550 fsb
vcore 1.51v
vnb 1.45
vsb 1.6
vfsb 1.5(i think)
my temps were 40-43c idle and 60c while running sm2.

oh and it booted at 550fsb with pci-e at x16

anyone who's not tried it,sm2 is a good quick oc test,if ram is unstable it crashes and if cpu is unstable,it crashes.

I've downloaded BIOS 804 from Asus site. Is this the recommended one from this group?

Also, with my P5W I updated BIOS with the Asus Update utility, which worked fine. I saw something in this thread where some updates were not working with this board, P5B dlx. Does the "Asus Utility" work with this board or is it a problem?

804 bios is the best for me.
I had no probs flashing with Asus Update. just make sure u have the latest version.

I still have the case opened up and stock cooling. Plan to get the big typhoon on soon and start OC. . . .

Temps are 50C on both procs running 2xFAH pegging CPU at 100%. Ambient is 68F, so the stock cooler won't do much OC. . .

strange problem on my P5B Deluxe....

whenever I power it on or restart it... it spins up for a second, shuts down for a second or two, then restarts normally?? WTF?? Even when I change a setting in the bios and exit- it does the same thing. Is this possibly a fan sensor or what could be causing this?? I can't imagine it's normal?

I had the same issue with my old board. I'll see if my new board does the same thing.

By the way, where can I get 0903 bios?

There is a part in this vid, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBI_kB0g9eM , where it shows some JMicron message, and then says press any key to continue...what the hell is up with this? I experience the same thing too, and my slave DVD-Rom drive isn't even seen by Windows. Anyone know what's up with this?

this and the j-micron thing are normal for this board the double start is the northbridge changing the strap that controlls ram/fsb ratio. if you reboot with same settings it doesn't need to change. but when you change it it doed the double start.
as for the j-micron deal.... it sucks but 965 chipsets don't support ide interface so asus uses a third party ide controller. just buy a sata optical or an ide to sata adapter and you can disable it.

that's normal from what i read it happens

1. at certain FSB settings when NB straps change i.e. on my P5B Deluxe 0804 bios it happens at 321FSB
2. when changing dividers away from 1:1, which suggests to me that changing dividers also changes the NB strap somehow ?

I've run the board 7x470 or 8x415... same deal. I don't have to change bios settings- it does it no matter what. I'm on the stock bios- 507. I need to flash to 804 still. I don't imagine that will fix it??

eva, i've noticed the same thing... and wonder why the board does that as well...

it would be interesting to see if the strap changes as well when you change dividers...

there are as you said only 2 ways that my board does the startup/stop/startup and both are the ways you described

I installed the Matrix drivers at F6 and all went well. I still need to install the faster ACHI driver and the SM bus controller. I waiting to get a longer network cable as I've been running wireless on my laptop and need to swap all my files to my new rig.

I have a SATA and IDE optical drives becuase I heard of this problem. Both work fine so far and I have no errors in device manager besides my graphics card.... I'm still deciding what drivers to use for that.

anyone have problems with the hard drive powering off in windows and the restarting? It is an IDE western digital. Do you think my hard drive could be going bad?

Hi, I'm looking for anyone who could have the same setup as me. Basically, when running Vista with the ATI beta drivers I have weird clock speeds on both my VGA Cards. I have a P5B Deluxe WiFi, and 2 x x1950 XTXs, setup to run in Crossfire. Both cards are installed, linked and recognised by the OS (Although actual Crossfire rendering is not possible yet in Vista, hurry up ATI!). The weird thing is this, in the 'Overdrive' section I have the following info for both cards:

GPU Requested CLock "650"
GPU Actual Clock "506"

Memory Requested Clock "999"
Memory Actual Clock "594"

Maybe I'm being stupid, but this can't be normal right? Do the X1950 XTX cards increase clock speed under load? If so I have not heard anything of it. Also, this problem exists with no overclocking of board in any way.

I'm hoping this is an issue with beta ATI drivers. Any help would be appreciated!:toast:

OMFG!! i just tried to update the bios(from 0611-0804) with the asus bios update program and then it asks me to restart my comp so i do and i get a bsod upon windows startup. then i restart it again and get a double restart(never happened on this new board before) then i get into windows and i check temps! MY 7900GT with a vf900 on it reads 145c!!!!! i don't believe it so i touch the heatsink(stupid me) and i burn my finger. so i shut it down and ran a fan over it. my question is this: WTF did i do? Is my PSU fooked or do i need to reflash the bios. i am really scared to turn my pc on again so some help would really be appreciated.

i think the X1900's do have different 2d and 3d core and mem clocks so i would assume the x1950 series does the same.

I have the p5b-Deluxe board and I am having an issue with the audioesp. I have tried all the available drivers including the beta mentioned in this post.

The problem started out with the sound dropping out and the AudioESP box opens up asking what I have connected to the green jack. I have a logitech 2.1 speaker system connected. At no time did I disconnect anything. I would go through the connection setup and it would keep opening up with the sound cutting out and then coming back on. If I un-check the audioesp in the soundmax control panel then I do not have any problems.

Also, now that I have deselected the audioesp if I reselect it the sound stays on but the connection box continues to open up until I uncheck the ausio esp.

I am also having an issue with the sound making a slight popping sound every once in a while.

The question is, do you think this a driver/software issue or a hardware issue?

I have the latest 0804 Bios

Surely the speed in the ATI control panel is the 3D core? 'Requested' and Actual should match, i.e the 'Requested speeds are correct stock speeds in my case, but the actuals are nowhere near. This is also reported in 3D Mark.

I'm runnin Vista too, so 2d clcok wont be used as Vista UI runs completely from 3D Textures. Maybe I should unplug one card and try it??

I called Asus, and they told me that it could be an issue with the actual sound connector on the board.
