LR 2.5 only supports the 7D RAW in beta mode so the colours look too orange. And CS4 won't open the RAW at all.Quote:

Anyway as for the 7D, I only defected from Sony because I wanted HD video with AF and Sony wasn't committing to bringing anything out with video anytime soon.
Here's what I dislike about the Canon 7D:
- The Quick Control Dial (ferris wheel looking thing at the back) - wish Canon implemented a dual dial like Sony and Nikon so if you are in Manual mode, you can use the front dial for Shutter and rear for Aperture.
- The lack of AF assist LED - seriously.....it's a bit archaic to use the pop up flash to strobe pulses of flash to help with acquiring AF not to mention it messes up using manual flashes via optical slave mode.
- No hotshoe cover/cap - any camera over 1k for body alone should have this. In fact every DSLR should have one considering it probably only costs 5 cents. Considering the 7D has weather sealing around the hotshoe but no cap to protect it.
- No AF/MF switch on the body - kind of bizzare actually. I haven't read the manual yet but looks like the only way to disengage the AF motor is to turn it off on the lens only for now.
- Not all Canon lenses come with hoods - I know that most digital lenses are less prone to flare and so on because of their digital coating, but a lens with no hood looks silly!
- Non USM lenses should be avoided if you want audio and to AF in video mode as the AF sounds are picked up.
- Menus are not as intuitive as Sony but that is just what you are used to. Definitely not as cryptic as Nikon.
What I like about the 7D:
- Build quality is amazing - everything feels solid even the battery door and CF door. No squeaks or creaks. Like precision German engineering.
- The grip is very comfortable and the rubbery texture makes it feel non slip and grippy.
- Big bright ViewFinder
- High ISO of 3200 is totally usable and 6400 is excellent if properly exposed.
- When LV is set up for face detection, HD video recording tries to maintain the AF on the face and it works fairly well.
- Manual exposure setting in Video is awesome as you can make it brighter or darker in small increments while recording.
- Auto ISO works fairly well however it does not seem to go above ISO 3200 even though ISO 6400 is set within the Auto ISO range.
- Plenty of AF point options and the tracking is pretty good when using assisted AF points.
I'm sure there are lots more but until I read the manual, some things are still foreign to me.
BTW all shots I have posted are from the 18-55mm IS lens which is a kit lens for the XSi.
Surprisingly it is an extremely sharp lens as you can see by my pics even on Flickr.
I initially wanted the Canon 18-135mm but it was not available to me. I may end up skipping that and getting the Canon EF 35mm f/2, Sigma 50mm f/1.4 and Canon 85mm f/1.8 but not anytime soon!

yeah the AF button doesnt work when the switch on the lens is set for MF.
because canon uses the focusing motor in the lens, you thus need to turn off the AF on the lens itself.
sure they could stop sending the focus signal to the lens and thus the lens wont focus but the lens then becomes very stiff and hard to manual focus because the drive motor is in the lens and not disengaged.
the feris wheel on the back and the top dial by the shutter button are set for aperture and expsure when in manual mode, i believe the top dial does aperture and the big wheel does exposure.
that is the default setting not sure why yours isnt working but there is a setting in the C.FN menu (custom function) it allows you to set what the big dial on the back does.
i am also not sure why you might say the menus are not as intuitive... menus are very straight forward. the C.FN menu is just a memory game to remember which submenu has the setting you need. but yes, switching camera makers will always result in a rethinking of how to move thru the menus.
canon menues are very very simply, and you rarely need to go into the manu to do anything.
really the only thing would be to change the flash compensation, raw/jpeg (which with the 7D is now not needed as there is a dedicated button for that) and play around with the custom functions.
oh and to "delete all pictures" this was removed from the standard delete button and into the menu which i thought was stupid...
Canon does have AF assist LED, its in the C.FN menu its call 'AF-assist beam firing' --- you should have it set to Enabled - no one says it works as good as an external flash IR beam, or flash strobe.
turn off high iso speed noise reduction - unless the 7D and its dual digic processors have made it so it really works now. otherwise the pictures get really soft
turn off long exposure noise reduction - again this made images too soft, but the 7D may handle it alot better
why would you need a hotshoe cover... ?? there is nothing there to damage..
never forget you can use the Custom Function 1 thru 4 on the mode dial.
set up the camera with all the settings you like and be sure to have the camera dial set as CF1 or 2 or 3 or 4

See how there is a dial in the front just like the Canon? And there is one in the rear as well which Canon does not have. That rear thumb dial is awesome for Manual mode where the front is for Shutter Speed and rear is for Aperture.
With the Canon, the rear dial is replaced with the ferris wheel which takes a little getting used to that's all. The dual dials are much easier to use than Canon's implementation.
As for the camera menu, I'm just not used to it yet.
As for the AF assist, the IR bean is transmitted via the pop up flash. It does not have a dedicated IR LED like you see on the a700. So it tends to trip off my optical slaves when it strobes the IR beams to acquire focus lock.
The a700 has a dedicated red LED and the Nikon has a yellow LED but Canon used the pop up flash for AF assist.
the camera does have an AF Assist beam, its the little white thing beside the shutter button. it works all the time, not just when the flash strobe goes off. the flash strobe only goes off to help focus and verify ligthing under less than favorable lighting conditions. or.. when ever it likes.. canon is wierd like that.
i am not sure why, but canon thinks its ok to put it there, right where your damn hand is.. its stupid.
