9800XT vmods

A little bit offtopic the question right now but about measuring voltages...
This might be sounds dumb but what the hell,it's me LOL...
When i read the voltage of the core of my xt i can read 3 values... (now u are thinking...WTF???)
Let me explain...
If i use a molex of the psu that i have connected to my computer i read 18,04 now (right now that i'm writing this reply).
If i use my case as ground i read 17,90...
And if i use a chieftec that i've got here disconnected i read 17,90 too...
Wasn't supposed to all ground points give me the same value...
Maybe i'm just being dumb (PROBABLY) but is asking that we learned!!!

BTW just out of curiosity i wanted to see what was wrong with this r9800pro2 256mb card. So far VDD and Vref are both messed up. That is wierd that both are fried. Might be a bit more involved than i thought. May have to plug the card in and see what it does. Hope it doesn't start a fire.

is there anyway to do these mods with smd grabbers? i use to own a 9800np and the mods were possible both ways, so i was hoping the xt had a grabber version. any info would be great. thanks

You told how to raise vref and vddq. How to lower it?

Yup, I agree with that 100% Makes me wish I had not thrown out a couple of dead cards recently.

As far as Macci's card goes, I would say that his -80° cooling plays a very big part in getting 657mhz core.

2PiZzA i did explain it once btw if not 2 or 3 times. I also suggested not to do it the way i did and to find the correct resistor to mod. Such as this.

lower Vddq=R124
lower Vref=R1555

I haven't checked if those are the ones. If it reads Vref on one side and 800mv approx. on the other then that's the one and same with vddq reading vddq on one side and 800mv approx. on the other. V modding the correct resistors is the best way to do it. I just hope those are the right ones.

My 9800xt took a dump again. This time it's the core. I modded it to never reset hmm and several other mods and it's been running fine. Now channel one goes up to 2.4 volts but channel 2 stays at 1.80 volts. Card is set for 1.80 volts atm. Since channel 1 goes wack the card resets after 10 seconds or so. One of the reasons i did so many v mods to core was because channel 2 when you raised v core and o/ced it always went into minimum mode and channel 1 took maybe 99% of the load. I was worried the card and or mosfets for channel 1 would die. Well i guess i did some of theese mods a bit too late. Channel 1 died anyways. Too bad i used AS epoxy on those mosfets. Gonna be a real pain trying to take that heatsink off without pulling up a few mosfets in the proccess. And yes i think one of the mosfets for channel 1 died. I'm hoping it's one of my mods though. I can fix that easy enough. Hell it may just be condensation from my hose going to water block on the cpu. I didn't see water though. Whatever it is i hope it's an easy fix and i'll play with it this weekend. Now i'm glad again i have this spare r9800xt that's still completely stock. That card might beat my old record of 3 weeks without a v mod or cooling mod. Don't take any bets on that. hehe

Oh almost forgot or actually i did forget. You have to solder a vario to each side of that resistor to lower that resistors value. Do NOT goto ground. I have no idea what value vario resistor to use. Start with 100k ohm and let everyone know. I'm betting a 50k ohm vario will be safe as well. But do as above just in case. If memory serves i used a 50k ohm and it worked. But i didn't get the range i wanted and eventually changed it to a 100k ohm vario. Just thinking out loud. You know how my notes are. :D

CATCH22ATPLAY You told only once about lowering vddq. But I checked it with my multimeter. It was looking pretty strange.

So you say to put a POT in parallel with R124 and R1555?

r1555 looks like a little chip. Which pins to solder?

Any proved gains with this 2 mods:
Vddq and Vref???

2PiZzA paralel yes. In your pic itt's the resistor that says 82A on it. Looks like it's actually R94 and not R1555. Hmm i don't even know which one is r1555. Maybe there's a resistor underneath U98. Be very careful. Vref adjusting kills more cards.

VoRtAn_MaDgE. So far it seems the answer is no. I only tried the mods after my ddr suffered from a lower ddr o/c after a while. But by the time i finished the mods i was able to run higher than when the card was newer and when it didn't have the ddr degradation problem. I find that very strange.

I say if you get sticks on winges raise Vref a bit. Alternate methos is to lower vddq. If you leave vddq alnoe and lower Vref it'll make it worse. Don't do that.

My default vref is 1.39 and vddq is 2.67. vmem is 2.95.

What should I do with vref and vddq. Increasing to 1.42 and 2.73 gave me nothing. Moreover my machine resets with these voltages. Just tell me what is better for you card.

2PiZzA, no problem dude. I always believe in asking questions. How else can you understand something. Plus i do like to help and or share some of my ideas. Even if they may not work. What's better for my card may not be what's better for yours. I don't use the default voltages for powering the mosfets. In other words my PSU is set at 3.625, 5.5 and 13.00 volts or slightly higher. That alone means my mosfets will put out slightly more current than if your PSU was at default volts. It's not a lot and may only be a couple/few watts more. But because of that i can't tell you what voltages will work best on your card. From past experiance with theese cards i also know that even if i buy say 5 R9700pro's all 5 will need slightly different volts. There just is no perfect volt mod. You just do the best with what you have or get another card and hope it does better. You gotta remember my R9800xt i bought when it first came out. I try to only buy one type of each. But as you know, recently mine went wack on me and i needed another for games. 3dmark score was and is secondary to me being a gamer.

Now since i finished my last game i've tried 2 others and got bored with em in an hour or so. I've never played Arcanum before and it was RPG of the year 2001 i believe. So since no newer games can give me my fix, i'm gonna try this one. So later dude. :)

xbitlabs LOL. I got a history with those peeps and it isn't good. I was amazed they didn't say they came up with my Tualatin mod to run on my bx mobo. I don't think they come up with anything original. But at least they provide good pics and bandwidth.

WHoa!! Got the parts from MrCrusher today. Gonna have to break in another soldering iron i bought the other night. Hmm didn't i just buy one last week? Oh yes i did. BTW HACKO soldering irons rock dudes. I also got an SMD removal kit from Fryes. Way too expensive. Basically it came with cotton swabs (bah!), flux (bah!2 unless maybe it's some special stuff), and what seems to be lead, but i don't think it is. Probably a mixture of lead and somthing else. I tried the stuff and it performs as advertised. Now removing theese little chips and clean up is so easy it's a joke. Very happy with the stuff. Just not happy about the price. But i'm a cheap bastard anyways.

Er so you are lazier than me huh? That's a first. Get your d..k wet and start soldering dude. Play with an old t bird sytem and a gf2 if you have to. You really get a sense of accomplishment when you do it yourself and it's half the fun. You will really enjoy it. Trust me on this. But practice, practice, practice. :)

How far do you think you are able to go on memory?
What voltages is FUGGER / OPP / Macci pushing into the Memory?
