thank for the update Msimax, but i think that is better to wait for shangai core with 45nm production tecnology....
I'll be able to use 800MHz ddr2 and (i hope) ASUS will release a new bios in order to support the new shangai with better support...
I just ordered my board today. I'm happy to be on the dual socket gravy train. :) Mostly will be used for World Grid and digital animation.
Time to go hunting for some dual quadcore's.
I could'nt pass up the deal greatvaluedeals had on fleebay with 8347s so I bought my long awaited 4 socket Tyan Thunder. I'll be happy with 4-1900mhz bangers until I can snarf some cheap Shangs. FL, you will love it. Even with two in this rig, I was pleased with performance. Four Xigmatek 92mm sinks keep this puppy cool and don't sound like a B17 strata fortress taking off.
What memory are you using with a pair of quadcore opterons? I'm looking for a 4gb kit for now. Will these sticks work?

Oops.. just realised that's not registered. You apparently need reg. RAM for Barcelona.
So your options are:
2x1gb DDR800 ECC Reg. CL5 http://shop.kingston.com/PartsInfo.a...800D2D8P5K2/2G
2x2gb DDR800 ECC Reg. CL6 http://shop.kingston.com/PartsInfo.a...800D2D8P6K2/4G
If I were in the same position as you (and I am.. lol) I'd go for 2 of the 2x1gb kits - 4x1gb will allow you to use dual-channel and provide adequate room for future expansion (As long as you're not using the L1n64...)
The product name suggests they are PC6400, and it says 800MHz in the description, but the label on the stick says they are PC5300

Note that the product code is the same (T800RB1G)...

If that's the stuff, then I'm ordering now. :D
Today (after installing arctic RC ram coolers) i got 2.7GHz running stable without any issues by getting a 270MHz FSB speed...
And i think i can go further....
Hey msimax, how are your 8224??? did the nTune trick give any help with your overclock???:D

Does anyone know if the MSI Speedster supports split power planes? The board posted earlier in this thread shows what appears to be 4 phase power (4 enclosed coils along each cpu).
I recall seeing a post in another forum which implied that split power plane would be required for Shanghai 45nm chips.
The Speedster2 picture at the MSI site has what looks like 5 phase power, but it is not the actually photo of the board. Are 5 phases required for split plane power, or can it be done with four phases?
According to a forum member over at msi.forums, a tech at MSI says the Speedster2 is exactly the same as v1.1, but with the 8 mb bios chip.
I wish DFI would release a dual socket 1207 workstation board :)
the only model which supports DDPM is Speedster2, the regular speedster is a simple Socket F while the Speedster2 is a Socket F+.
Phases have nothing to do with power planes, with multiple phases you can supply more energy to the same components by having more stability, while DDPM is a dual dinamic power managment, which means that there are 2 power planes (not phases) that can be powered differently in order to disable one of the 2 units you need (like cores or IMC).
For Overclock purposes, socket F+ will give no benefits over Socket F.
Infact the DDPM is designed for better power menagement and less power consumption.
A Barcelona overclocking board is already out, the L1N64B was born for overclock, it needs only a final stage bios with all overclocking settings available....
I don't know if there's only a bios difference between the two models, even the components allocation is different between the two models, i dubt that DDPM is available also on regulat Speedster, a bios difference may change processor and memory support, but can't change hardware components...
Look at L1N64, there is no difference between the to boards, (only colors and the main WS/B "stiky"), but all the components are the same, nothing changes, infact there no DDPM support on this board, even in the WS/B model.
If you have to choose a board, choose the Speedster2 for better power managment, otherwise, if you are going to overclock, go for some MCP55/MCP55Pro boards which are nTune compatible.
Remember that server and workstation boards usually don't have overclocking options, that means you'll have to overclock under windows (or linux).
Does anyone know where Likmark is gone??? I need to ask him something...
Maybe I found the way to have all memory modules and getting full overclock with L1N64 and barcy.....
For now I have only 1 CPU (because i'm waiting for Shangai), but likmark has got 2, then he has 4x2Gb memory modules....
If he tries to load only DDR slots B1-A2-B2 without setting the first one we might be able to run the system in 533 memory mode so we can overclock up to 2.7GHz via nTune..
If it really works (i can't try because i've only one cpu), we might install 2x2Gb memory modules + 2x1Gb memory modules giving 3Gb of Ram for each cpu and different size for every channel, this will disable the dual channel memory configuration while improving overclocking capabilities.
I run several tests on other motherboards and the trfc is both stable on 75ns and 125ns, and I found somewhere that K10 based processors have some problems with dual channel and unganged/ganged memory mode, so with this trick the motherboard will get maximum speed and overclock....
the only downside will be the memory subsytem with the dual channel inoperability...
Hey Likmark! where are you??
Hey guys,
I finally got my Dual opteron 285 system up and running. One thing though my second cpu is only running at 200mhz HT, cpu 1 is running at 1000mhz HT. My hypertransport settings are set to auto.
This is on a supermicro h8dce, Any ideas?
any idea guys?
its weird cpuz and CrystalCPUID report different.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3067/...05b6920e_o.jpg
Also I've a supermicro h8dce, I managed to find a vesion of clockgen specific to the nForce4 chipset (other versions/sofwtare -aka ntune, crystalcpuid, etc.. simply dont work at all on this mb) When I try to install/run I get the same messagebox saying "driver init error" or "unable to init driver" or "driver not found" depending on the version of clockgen, Is there a way out there to OC under Vista x64?
Ive read the thread from 2cpu.com (http://forums.2cpu.com/showthread.php?t=65349&page=97 ) and they all use the nforce version of clockgen or the 1.04 version and i get that error.
Any ideas? or any other software i can try?
I'm having some trouble modding the K9ND BIOS - if anyone could help me, I'd really appreciate it ;)
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...00#post3288300
@nohrt - I think you can OC using RW-Everything. I will post more info when I have a bit more time, sorry I can't be more helpful right now...
i got the oc working with clockgen
Thanks!
Hey, anyone know if the L1N64-SLI WS /B is gonna support the shanghai's? And does anyone have any speculation as to the price range of ~2ghz shanghai's? I just returned my 2350 as defective and am wondering if I should even get a replacement or just wait and buy shanghai's when they come out.
thats up too asus to decide their technical support sucks and even though amd stop supporting the platform every time i turn around the boards are sold out. so if you have one please register it and complain to asus for support
Yeah, you aren't kidding about their tech support. I talked to one of them the other day when I was troubleshooting the cpu/board to figure out which it was, the guy that I talked to just copy and pasted crap from their public website that I already looked through, and he ended up just telling me that the B3 steppings are not supported because its not listed under supported processors....of the 0401 BIOS. I wanted to jump through the chat window and strangle him.
I also wanna know of the Asus mobo is going to support the shanghai....hope so
I have a question that someone can feel free to refer me somewhere else if need be :)
Are there any plans for a crossfire version for Socket F? I keep looking at this Asus board and cant help but wonder if there with ever be an AMD/ATI variant. Is there any news or hint of a board with an amd chipset in the near future? Its seem they would with over a year still left before G34 comes out.
Just wondering. thanks
