I don't fully know either as I have never made a larger PCB design before. I do understand that the programs that auto draw the layouts use some pretty complicated algorithms to minimize layer requirements and keep trace lengths within given tolerances. I'm guessing there aren't many options in terms of layout once you introduce that many components. Sure if they doubled the PCB layers we could probably have any layout we want. But then the kiddies would complain about prices :rolleyes:
And in terms of more phases = better regulation, component quality plays a big role too.
