ASUS P5B-Deluxe; Problems & Fixes

Everyday that passes with this board makes me happier i joint the club. Very nice board so far with great stability and oc'ing abilities.
My 6400 seems to top @ 3.45ghz (8x430) no matter what volts i give it. No complaints though it's a really nice oc! :)
My only complaints are the double restart prob (come on asus this isn't a feature :mad: ) and the limited support of temp monitoring tools.
This board deserves to carry the asus brand name, is a definite enthusiast board plus it deserves little more respect in the oc'ing community... ;)
Way better than my previous P5W-DH.

what bios are you using and which voltages(give me alot of details),did you distabled something like speedstep, speed spectrum and C1E?
I can't get 400fsb.

"the double restart prob": I didn't think this was an Asus/Bios issue, I thought it was a function of the 965 chipset... I had the thing with that POS DS3...

Yea I that's what I ended up doing but you shouldn't have to do that. I backed down to 0507 and got the same thing. I remember I had this with my AXP system and I adjusted the pci latency (or something of the sort) to fix it :confused:

It is feature of the latest asus board. Both 975 and 965.

haha, I'm not sure if "feature" is the right word for it. I read somewhere that newer bios' will fix it. :toast:

My point was that if that's the case, it must also be a feature of the Gig. DS3. It does exactly the same thing... :)

This isn't a feature. It's a hw killer after excessive periods of time (start/stop cycles). :mad:
The only reason i (and most of the ppl here) don't bother is that we're hw enthusiasts and we change them regularly.. ;)
It doensn't happen up untill 375+mhz in my board. When u hit 400mhz it starts.

At stock speed I don't get the restarts. Any overclock triggers it on mine. I figured it was the Asus bios protection.

A couple of things....
first, what is spread spectrum and should it be disabled.
second, on the 507 bios, is anyone missing 2.2 v for the memory. it goes from 2.15 to 2.25 on mine.
third, I was able to oc to 333fsb with it being rock solid (dual folding for 24 hours) I than tried to oc to 400fsb and it wont boot. here are my stats
fourth, what is vanderpool technology and should it be disabled.

with most past systems, spread spectrum has been disabled but i've read a few cases in which spread spectrum actually helped people out... it hasn't hindered my overclock at all... what it actualy does, i do not know (sorry)

Yes, 2.2V is missing... dunno why.

Personally, I disable every feature in the menu with "vanderpool" in it... then again, i've only gotten to 480fsb so maybe thats my problem.

Raise vcore... 1.45 or 1.5 bios should do.

I have a question for you guys......I have been debating trying 515X7 for 3.6Ghz at 5-5-5-12 or should I stay content at 500X7 for 3.5Ghz at 4-4-4-10??

At what point does the overclocking not really help? I have noticed that 475FSB may have better SuperPi times than 500FSB and I am trying to figure out why?

I have pretty much the same set up - (see sig.) I'm at 1.475v vcore and 2.25v vdimm (I don't know what sort of cooling you've got though.)

I had no problems going straight to 405 fsb and then higher.:woot:

Well, I bumped my vcore up to 1.45 and the fsb to 400 and got it to boot, but it only lasted about 5 seconds in dual prime 95, so it is no where near stable. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Temps don't look too bad, so I don't think it's a heatsink problem. Maybe I just got a dud or something. Anyway, I set it to my last known stable settings for now.

FYI: few people have gotten 3.6GHz stable w/ less than 1.5vcore (Aveman you are NOT helping my arguement :P nice chip ;) ). Try 1.5Vcore and you should be good for at least a pi benchmark... probably not 24/7 stable but at least you'll get to have some fun. Be brave ;)

To much trouble! Running at a crummy 2.4 with 8x300. The instant off then back on again on restatrts then nothing, then restart again to get fired up is a real hassle. You guys are going to hate this but I think I'll just pick up the Fry's deal of a E6600 with a ECS P965t-a board. The chip is sold as a tray meaning no fan. But the Intel fan for me runs at 55c when at 2.4mhz so I'll pick up a ASETEK Vapo Chill Micro instead. The ECS board can only go to 333 FSB but that gets you a rock solid 3GHZ. I don't have the time to screw with the ASUS board and the E6400 chip. Besides the ECS P965t-a/E6600 Combo was $379 plus the fan is $50. Any thoughts on this? Am I screwing up my setup? Oh yeah! I'm hoping my OCZ Gold 800mhz works on the ECS.

I am currently benchmarking 500X7 on my E6400 at 1.512v because I woke up this morning after priming all night for 8 hours on 1.425v on hour 9 it failed Orthos!

I am not even sure how long it needs to run to be considered stable, but I guess I am doing a good burn-in with my AS5 right now anyway!

EDIT: I just failed after 3 hours with more vcore, and less vcore last night lasted 8 hours? Could it be my ram timings are too tight?

If it's a feature I hate it :) But it's not limited to the i965 chipset. I have a P5LD2 i945 board that does the same thing, starting around 275FSB with a D920

Failing at all is a sign of instability, though it could be something you never run in to in the 'real world'. I consider 24 hours without failing (manually stopping it yourself) 24\7 stable.

Hey guys, I've got a prob with P5B-Deluxe WiFi/AP: can't even _save_ BIOS when going 1 Mhz over the 430 FSB. When I press "Save-and-exit" - I'm being left in same screen, computer hangs and no reboot helps - have to cleanup CMOS...

System is completely stable @ 430 - 12h dual prime etc.

Memory proved to be completely stable @ 1200Mhz (5-5-5-15, 2.2v)

tried CPU voltage up to 1.4 - no luck. maxed vMCH and other voltages as well - no changes. tried 6x multiplier for cpu - nothing new... played with RAM timings - set them to max, everyone of them - nothing.

What could it be ? what this 430Mhz "edge" is all about ? should go way higher..

ps. cooling is good (Zalman 9500), CPU contacted to cooler well etc.

Any ideas ?

Try jump to a higher mhz such as 440 and 450 directly. Make sure you have the 0507 bios.

are you sure about BIOS version ? 'cause I have the latest one 0609 (or was it 0607?). jumping to 450 does not help on it, thought - same effect...

ps. btw, with this BIOS I dont have problems within 300-400, as some reporting, thought the problems like this was gone in this version...

hey guys,

i will be able TO finally fire up my rig.

config: E6400
ram: 2gbhz
mobo: obv P5B Delux
cooling: soon TT120 :P

what worries me is that the 2gbhz (DDR2-800) requires 2.1V to boot at rated speeds. and the bios initially supplies only 1.8V

Will I be able to boot the PC enough to be able to go to bios and set 2.1V? Will I be able to POST? Please advice.

I really dont wanna run around looking for cheap DDR2 just to boot the PC.

Also, is the same thing gonna happen everytime i clear CMOS? (since that would reset the Vdimm to 1.8V)

My mobo is rev 1.03G and shipped with 0507 bios.
