The replacement chip that I scavenged came from a ECS board, but I noticed my DFI has the same chip in it... will try again later today to flash the replacement chip using some other flash program.

Guys, guess I need some help. My Grouper starts to act weird outta nothing.
When I woke up today and went to my machine today, it welcomed me with some crashed programs. Not much later, it rebooted itself. After loading Windoze and me starting to open programs, reboot again. Something is heavily troubled once I put load on the SATA channel. I just tried to run some diagnostics, Hitachi Drive Fitness Test to check if my HDD has some problems ... but even that locks up during drive search.
I'll try to run memtest and Prime now, tho I have a strong feeling that neither my CPU nor RAM are the problem. BTW, I'm still on the stock bios, with stock settings as I haven't had time to play around with it yet.

When I first ran this setup a few days ago, I had Prime running overnight without any issues.

If need be I can flash a spare chip for you guys one at a time.......I will send you the chip pre flashed you send me your old chip back.........this goes for USA residents only though and the first person to not send me back a chip ruins it for everyone else.
Weird, it seems to be my RAM. Memtest showed errors with all settings I tried ... bios defaults, the ones revv posted earlier in this thread (he got GSkill 2GBZX too). Even bumped up the voltage to 2.85v (stock is 2.6v). Errors allover the place. Now trying my old precious Mushkin BH-5 sticks.Quote:

Now I'm trying the ZX sticks on Grouper again, which I updated to the latest official bios (still waiting for other's results with Tony's bios). This new bios has quite some changes, at least in terms of menu design. There are also fine-tuned VDIMM options now, at least in the 2.8v+ range. My Grouper's stock bios only offered 2.85v as next step after 2.8v. Now there's 2.82v, 2.84v, etc. And they added CPU temp to the monitor, but I think someone else mentioned that before. Some other options got own submenus.
Revv, any news about your ZX sticks? Besides your issues with the ZX, are you still running the same timings as you posted in post #647 of this thread or have you found any improvements?
You have no problems with the new bios on sapphires site? What method did you use to flash it?
AWDFLASH. I can't say much about the new bios's performance or problems as I'm just jumping between bios and Memtest so far.
How about Tony's bios, chew? Would you recommend it? :)
Let's just say That I know for a fact it's the best bios to date for the grouper...
Ok do me a favor with sapphire's new bios, clear Cmos hit F2 do not adjust bios settings and boot to windows. Then restart hit f1 load optimized defaults in bios and try to run a benchmark like 06. This is of course if it even makes it passed the dmi pool data screen.......Quote:

I'm back to my original bios, using a slightly different way tho. I disabled all onboard stuff except SATA and put everything to very, very fail save (a little additional core voltage, RAM divider to 133, ...) and managed to boot Windoze. I decided to reflash my old bios via Winflash before Grouper decides not to boot Win anymore. Still I can't boot from floppy, dunno why ...Quote:

Ahhh Ok you figured it out. Now let this be a lesson to all Do not USE SAPPHIRES NEW BIOS.
Some users are even experiencing board death by trying to failsafe into windows and forcing the board to work.
If your back on the original bios Just do a CMOS reset for like 5 mins. Floppy should work fine after that and loading optimized defaults. It could be your floppy disk got corrupted.
I would suggest reflashing with winflash again as flashing from windows with that other bios is risky and probably caused corruption. You could have done it from floppy but you needed to set the NB-SB port configuration to default :)
Once your floppy works again I suggest you flash it one last time in PURE DOS just to be sure. I personally don't trust winflash.

Only thing I can think of is that maybe it works with a fresh install........It may screw with IRQ assignments, If thats the case it could cause the issues as these newer systems are ACPI compliant, Which could cause major conflicts with windows. As far as I know there is no way to change IRQ assingments in windows 2k XP with ACPI compliant systems, except a fresh install.Quote:

Nice setup chew, but what I'm wondering if the NB is designed to work under circumstances like mine. I've had a lot of trouble with official bioses, so I'm happy I found smth stable for me with Tony's bios.

Layout is similar to Tony's. NB temps are not off the scale. I just flashed about a half hour ago, but so far so good. I was having cold boot issues with the mod bios so I will know in the morning if all is still good.
EDIT: Locked up again. For me it is a no go. With that said I don't know of any others that are experiencing my problems. The windows clock begins to slow down and eventually the machine just freezes. When I reset the time is correct. This is on top of having to reset a dozen times just to make it to windows on the first power on of the day.
You sure your memory is 100% stable? Does this happen at stock speeds?
Yes at stock speeds with ram on auto. Every bios except the Sept. bios. I can run any benchmark or game for hours, or dual prime with large fft's or run memtest86 for hours, but as soon as I let it sit idle in windows (like when reading a web page) the clock begins to fall behind and then it just freezes. When I reboot, clock returns to normal.
markr, did you use Tony's BIOS before? I tried to flash the latest official BIOS over Tony's for testing, at least with Winflash it didn't work. Guess you did it with Awdflash?
I used the F32A program for flashing as AWDFLASH would not work for me.

Bios 1.4M (Stock Bios)
There is some funny business in my Bios, When I set the V core to 1.5V i get 1.4 in the PC Health Status menu in the Bios.
If I set it to 1.35V it says 1.35V in the Pc health status menu.
If I set it to 1.55+0.06 it says 1.44-42 in the Pc health status menu.
Ram V looks fine set to 2.9V shows 2.9V
5V,3.3V and 12V is not very far of either.
Where on the Grouper can I measure V core?

Set vcore to no higher than 1.4 or 1.44. After that use the vidoffset voltage to increase vcore further. Its a known bug. Are you on the latest bios? How is it?
I'm on the latest official BIOS now, dated 4/17. Seems to run stable *knock on wood*. Flashed it with F32A since neither Winflash nor Awdflash worked for me.
Haven't had any time to overclock since I swapped from Expert to Grouper, so I'm still running at stock. The BIOS looks very similar to Tony's, just that they added NB temp to the PC Health section. Oh, and the temp seems to be correct (37°C in my case).
Still having the shutdown/reboot issues tho. I'll keep this one and will might try some overclocking later this week. Btw, I never got Cool & Quiet running with Grouper. It's enabled in BIOS, I installed the CPU driver and changed the settings in my power options - tho it's still running at 2200MHz all the time :stick:

No idea if a new BIOS could possibly fix your USB sound issues. But ... F32A doesn't work for you at all? Winflash didn't work for me cause Tony's BIOS might have been to different from the official BIOSes, so it required F32A to really force a flash ... that's my guess at least. Just ran through 3DMark01 which is a good indication of overall system performance and i'm sorry to say that this bios won't win you any extra points in any benchmarks. The score is only slightly lower by a few points compared to the November bios but if most of you guys are like me you will tweak and tweak until you get everything just right and 100% stable which this bios just isn't.
CPU-Z Still also reads the wrong voltage from the CPU, it thinks that I am pushing 1.776V through my CPU on air cooling, eek!
I am still adament that this is a cracking board and better than many out there, it is just the bios revisions that are terrible. We have had two major ones now in the past month and neither of those are any good for day to day use.
Sapphire, you really should make a list of revisions made to the new bios so we can see what's going on! Who tests these before they go out as well!
If the beta bios is still around DO NOT USE IT. I had the same issues as everyone else EXCEPT I had no luck flashing back to an official bios.Quote:

8 beats are sure meant for the "Read Write Queue Bypass", tought I'm not so sure about ther rest of the settings, but I may have yet to flash more recent bios to see them...?
Anyway, Tomy repeatedly says that in the second two ram slots he gained better OC. Anyone tried that? Of couse my rams are in the first two slots... :p:
