TC,
what will happen if you set the AGP/PCI lock in BIOS ?
No boot ? Just need someone to confirm this, because now i have the 3rd board from a third delivery with a 46MGO25xxx number, also with no AGP/PCI locks :(

My previous board, on which I suspect the lock is not working, will fail to boot once I enable AGP/PCI lock. Also, HDD will be corrupted once I set HTT higher than 225.
The replacement, S/N starts with 46, is working much better. It sucessfully boots up with AGP/PCI lock enabled and I can run high HTT (so far I tested up to around 245-250) with lower multiplier.
is it an "OJ" ? All others have no working locks, I'm afraid. If I were in Europe/UK I'd steer clear of early A8V'sQuote:

Well it managed 200x14 fine at 1.7v... but it seems anything above that needs a kick in voltage... but that kick in voltage gives me some lovely unstable voltages... last night ranging from 1.776v to 1.92v :S... well this is what CPU-Z was flashing at me...
... if I found the system crashing I actually lowered the voltage and the system would actually sometimes sit stable..
... max. I got it to was 2.75GHz :(
..o bout the Mach II... it's an ST... so I don't know.. I have a Mach II arriving sometime this week or next so will most likely swap everything over when that arrives and maybe a regas to get it nice and cold
Alright, got my board today and the serial number on the box is 45MGO71010. Makes me a bit nervous. I have no idea when i'm gonna have the time to even get this thing together to test the locks. Any speculations?
Stasiu,
That's a strange number.... not OG or OH or OF or OJ, Just "O" and then numbers??
What CPU are you running?
C
ok..on the m/b box there's a sticker on the front and in the top left it says "Serial No.: 45MG071010". Not OJ or O and any other letter, just numbers after the G0. I have an FX-53 with stepping CAACC week 0418. I'm anxious to get this set up...but i really don't have time. I'm not sure if i can even do it this weekend. We'll see...if i'm up for it i'll do it when i come home again tonight. I bought a new nikon 4300 but the damn thing had a dead pixel in the LCD and it drove me nutz. hopefully i'll get it back in a week and i can take pictures if you want 'em. BTW...i looked at the board quick and didn't see any serial number on it, where is it located? It just says A8V REV.1.02.
Charlie, I'm going to give one more a8v a try. maybe 3rd one is the charm. (omehow I doubt it, but...) I'm running out of choices though. ;) I ordered it form a distributer, so maybe it's a recent model. I am starting to think from my experiences with abit, that it may be a chipset revision by via and not some board implementation that can finally fix this for good. One thing I can say is that even without the locks fully working, the noard is way better than the NF3-939 piece of s***!
OK Guys,
I'm Back With AMD!

Thanks charlie!:D
I wasn't going to assemble Anything until I was SURE!
Time To Rock N' Roll!
:toast:
I got My FX53 today its a CAAEC stepping I've already removed the IHS. I'm just waiting on my A8V to get here. I never removed a resistor to do a vmod so I was practicing with a old board last night. I'm confident that I will be able to get the vcore mod done now.
Halloween, where'd you get that m/b from? I have a very sick feeling mine isn't going to have locks. It's drivin' me so nuts right now, i'm gonna start as soon as i get home and i don't care how long it takes. I need to find out if this board has locks or no so i can get one with locks. BTW...i have the same stepping and date FX-53 as you do.
stasiu
I Bought the MoBo and CPU from Monarchcomputer.com because they were one of the few places I found that Knew what the H*** I Wanted when I Talked to them!
They did tell me that this MoBo has Locks, But I won't Know for Sure until I get it assembled and running!:D
Monarch is the best dude. They overnighted me a 6800 Ultra which I will have tomorrow.:D They are just the best, and their customer service is incredible! They also have stuff before everybody else usually. I buy lots of stuff from them.Quote:

As for the locks I think you just asked Charlie and I think he said yes.
A little advice? Don't put anything that comes in an anti-static bag on carpet. Even more important, don't walk on carpet while holding them in your hands unless you live in Guam. You're just asking for trouble.;)
Yeah,That's Right!;)
charlie DID tell me it had locks, I just wasn't Thinking when I posted.(Trying to get the "Show on the Road" and concentrating on not making mistakes!) :D
hallowen is 100% ready to put up some officially amazing numbers! The mobo is right, the CPU stepping is interesting, it's a "GO" and ready for take-off!!!!!!!!!!
You guys aren't going to believe it, but i may SELL my rig, a guy emailed me and is offereing me well more than the cost, because it's a golden CPU and a perfect functioning mobo........should I do it?
C
C
Yep. Use the money to buy OPP's S940 rig.:ROTF:
No, sell the CPU to me. lol. j/k
If it were me, I'd sell. But what CPU/mobo would you replace it with?
charlie...
ok, probably stupid question....
the timings in your sig...what's the 7 and 16? I can't even find a memory option in my BIOS that goes up to 16...
7 is TRC and 16 is DRAM Idle Timer.
stevenmh,
here's the screenie
stormpc,
why he's selling it? wants fx-53/939 eh?
sierra bound,
I don't know what I'd do. I just have a h*** *n for new hardware :D
Charlie,
Yep. He says he can't handle the speed of the S940 anymore so he wanted something a little more tame and politically correct.;)
:ROTF:
SELL SELL SELL! ;)
just received my A8V Deluxe and FX-53...
here is the serial : **MG0J27098
please tell me it's good...
my FX-53 is a week 22
Ok, here's a new one 45MG0L0153 Rev 1.02
What are the "J" board rev #'s?
Revision 1.02 :D
Well at least the "L" comes after "J" so I hope the locks work on this one too.
The NB is an 0419CD
that sounds like REALLY new gear, g/l!!!!!!!!!!!1Quote:

Charlie, what did you use to rip the Vcore R167 off of the board and how hard was it to come off?
Tony did it and said if it works for me then he'll post it.Quote:

Pretty easy. I used a fine tip 25w iron and solder braid. I went from left side to right side and back to left side, and kind of wiggles the iron when the solder started to get sucked up and the SMD didn't stick to pad very well and it just "popped" off, 20 seconds tops.Quote:

C
what is sodder braid? Do they have it at radio shack?
Yes, they sell it at radios shack. Probaby better to get some finer braid at a electronics shop though. Its usually braided copper and its also known as solder wick. Its used to remove solder from components
Beginning to think that there are two very different mobos.
My mobo from EU has 1 RED IDE and 2 RED sata, where Charlies attached picture on first site has BLACK and BLUE colors.
Mine is a "B" and Charlies "J"........if I remember correct. Mine is a rev. 1.02 too....
yeah, you place the solder wick on the solder joint of the res and then touch the soldering iron tip to the top of the solder wick, which is on top of the solder you want to remove, as the braid heats, 1 or 2 seconds, the wick will "turn silver" as it sucks up the solder, then move to next side, wiggle and repeat.
C
Mine are red also. I don't think it makes any difference. What is the s/n of yours?
Is the little resistor trashed after if you wanted to re-attach it, or is it just too tiny to sodder both sides back?Quote:

Also, if water cooling, is it worth it for an FX53?
no, i don't think it's necc for WC... 1.8v is quite a bit :D

I got it all set up last night but can't get the onboard LAN to work. I have not way of downloading the newest bios, clockgen, new drivers, etc. Has anyone else had a problem with the LAN?
Mmmmmmmmm.... never tried that stuff
C
It take it you installed the driver and made sure LAN was enabled in the BIOS. If so, try uninstalling and then reinstalling the driver. I'm using a PCI card now because I did something stupid the other day. I was removing a PCI device and forgot to pull the power cord. Anyway, there was a spark and I think I fried the LAN chip. Had to run to the local Fry's store and buy a Gigabit card for $25.Quote:

Congrats, hallowen. Make sure you set the Memclock ratio to 2:1 DDR400 if you want to run 1/1. BIOS is a little confusing at first.

Sierra, what cooling are you on for CPU and GPU???
Do you have any vmods?
Water. CPU idles around 38C with VCore at 1.8v. GPU is around 32C.Quote:

Some Super PI :D This is with a unmodded board running some OCZ 3700EB 2.7v's
Has any one tried modding the mem voltage this way?
I'd also like to know that:)
Wassup cowpuppy! Looks like your gettin the board worked out now:toast:
Yeah, that was the first Vmod method that Xgman and others tried. They reported that with the VR hooked up at any setting it would cause a lock up.... I never tried it, I went straight to the lift the resistor and replace it method. WISH I knew the 3.3V PSU rail direct to DIMM method :(
C
OK, I've had enough Fun On Air, It's Time To Adapt the Cascade to AMD and Add a Few Other Goodies!:hehe:
I did the mem mod to the pic and it worked fine. My only problem is that it locks at 2.8v no mater if I adust from the pot or within the bios. It would never boot at 2.8 before the mod.
We need get some reall voltage to our mem. My BH-5 wouldn't even run 225. I need to cram 3.55v up it's arse and then it will run 270Htt
Its the same as any other board, just make sure you dont get the long and short sides backwards (AMD board DIMMs are "upside down" comparred to Intel).Quote:

Alternately you could solder a wire from mosfet supply (usually backside) to output leg therefore bypassing the mosfet and only having to use one short wire with no guess work.
The problem with either mod is that if you have OVP it may kick in and stop you dead in your tracks.. I think you board cut out at 3.17v, didnt it?
Find that OVP chip and fix it! ;)
FX/X800XT power at only 2.6GHz. CPU, memory and video card are working nicely together right now. Closing in on 32K. Maybe by tomorrow. :D

i have got to get my modded x800pro clocking properly! hopefully i'll be able to get into the 33k range at 250x11 3-2-2-8 with my V5/Dtek WW combo. I may have to do a maze4+tek on the gpu to get it clocking properly tho. stuck at 510 after the flash to get 16 pipes and the flash back to pro bios. only did 517 on the core before so i think powercolor slacked off a muffed the thermal goop but im not sure yet. it will be clocking properly once i get get cooling on it tho. if i have to pelt it its gett'n pencil modded up to 1.5v.
I need to flash backwards can you help me out with a DOS utillity

you can flash backwards with asus bios update. you need to go to options and click bios downgradeable
Thanx I figured it out on my own just after I posted
Why does windows freeze when I get above 2.75v to the mem with this board? Even before the mod windows would lock with 2.8v in the bios. It's not the mem I was just running it in a AN50R with 3.55v to the OCZ but 3.18 worked well up to 270htt. If only I could get 3.1*v out of this board.
What kind of rails off the psu are you guy's runnning? 12.6 3.42 5.32
Maybe it's time to kick up the 3.3 rail a notch.
I ran into the same problem and got it to load by setting the fsb to 210 and then adjusting the timmings for my bh-5 to 22251t. I also set LDT to 800.
Charlie, you can add another serial # to those that have lock.

zzf just sent it to me for the first board that died.
Alright guys....i put my 10 hours in today working on a foundation, and the Polish girl needs to spend time with the family b4 she goes back, so I just got my 754 A64 temporarily set up to see if i can get the FX working. I remember reading a post on newegg that someone had to download a new version of the Marvell gigabit LAN driver for it to work properly. That's what i'm off to do, since my internet works fine with the K8NNXP. I'll put it on a spare hard drive, or burn it to a CD then load it on the A8V and see how it goes. The only other issue i may have is with network settings. Any suggestions on what i could play with if the new driver for the A8V LAN doesn't work? I check to make sure that the A8V LAN is assigned an IP address with ipconfig in DOS, and i see it does get a number assigned to it. What else could i try? I haven't heard of anyone here having a problem with the LAN, you guys just loaded up the driver that came with the ASUS CD right?. I don't mean to spam this tread with setup issues, but maybe someone else could benefit from it too?;)

Good job, ALL you guys......
I'm giving up on benching for awhile, had two X800XT's over here today with StormPC and had problems with HDD being recognized, and something else and this that and the other thing...
And realized that I just don't have time for all this, I mean I'm sure the issues were all "user error" but I just didn't have the patience. SO i'm going to "unplug" for a while, this 939 thing has had me 100% preoccupied for the last month, and I have to get back to work and concentrate on other stuff...
It's great hardware, but I just can't devote this kind of time/energy at this point. :)
So my harwdare is in Classifieds.
C
You're too hard on yourself Charlie.
I'm pretty sure this formula is valid. S939=Crap!
I'm 100% sure of this formula. A8V=Crap!
I'll know more next weekend when I bench my FX-53, but it looks bad right now!
OPP had an A8V S939 rig he tested with cascade. What were his 3D results? Don't know. He didn't run anything worth publishing.
Jason was gonna break 38k with his new S939 rig with X800XT. Next thing you hear he's sold all his gear and become a monk (or was it a nun?).
I'll let Charlie tell you about our results (although I don't think he'll be too interested in that).
Charlie, you're just burn't out. Take a break and keep in touch. You'll be benching again in no time.
And thanks for having me over! It was not very fruitful, but fun nonetheless.:D
Here is the hope for you guys:
Don't sell your s939 yet!

and I will have ES during the the 3rd week of this month! Stay tune!

Well, dry ice can be hit or miss and if I remember right OPP was runnning a 3500+ for socket 939
Today's benching was a complete mystery. Even on AIR the X800XT was squirrelly, BOTH of them. Like locking up at default CPU/GPU clocks...
So, in other words... there WAS NO benching. No stats no conclusions, just like a NASCAR race when the race car has electrical problems on the start line before the race starts. There they call it "DNF" Did Not Finish. That was today's story.
Draw absolutely NO CONCLUSIONS about 939's from this, the setup just NEVER got going...
It was probably something simple, but I'm just toooooooo tired to care/deal with it.
C
I give up on the LAN, from what i get my locks don't work anyway. I have the A8V clockgen and bigtoe's bios saved to a hard drive. The board won't post with the locks enabled in the bios, and when i increase HTT with clockgen agp/pci were increasing when HTT was increased. Here's a shot @ 2.64 on air with 1.65 volts. I had one over 2.7, but i must not have copied and pasted right because i can't find it now. I guess it's just going to be an expensive paperweight until i get a good board....
My X800XT is chugging along nicely. Just hit my first target with CPU clocked at only 2.66GHz. Next target: 14K in 3DMark03. :D

S939 is good for posting screenies, just not too good for running programs where data needs to be processed by the CPU to and from the VC.
Yeah, you see... if I wasn't so "burned out" on this whole thing, I'd just ask you for your setup details and find the "glitch" in my setup.... but I just don't have it "IN ME". ya know?Quote:

I STILL think it was a BIOS mistake (user error) or a hdwe incompatibility or something ?? Who know, maybe a loose cable?? I was getting HDD not recognized error msg's.Who knows? But like i said, this is in NO WAY an indictment of the gear..... more likely the "user", lol
BUT NONETHELESS, thanks to STORMPC for letting me try his 2 x x800xt's unfortunately, the "race" never started :(
C
Charlie - I'm wondering if there isnt an incompatability between the board and the x800xt's?
Seems there was someone somewhere on the forum having issues with lockups while the processor was overclocked... but once at stock all was fine?
It was something like that, anyways.
I'm currently running an X800XT with my A8V with no problems.
Come on Charlie, you are way too hard on yourself. And it was a pleasure. You're very welcome.
I would understand if it was just you, but OPP and Jason? Am I the only one who thinks it's odd the neither of them published a single 3DMark bench worth a damn?
Either the S939 has issues or OPP and Jason don't know as much as you think they do. Since I know that they know their $hit, it's apparent to me that it's S939 that's to blame. So much for the Holy Grail! Actually, I think VIA is to blame. Their first attempt at a chipset that locks the AGP/PCI busses was a flop!
STEvil: All was not fine at stock.
BMG: That's nice. Where are your 3D benches?
Well, from what I can see just in this thread sierra_bound has you by 1.5k and you're both running about the same cpu speed. 2657/11 would be 241 fsb so you were only 11 behind in fsb. Even if you were using a 12 multi, there isn't a change that 30 more on the memory would give you 1.5k. I'd say your just slower.
charlie try going back to the 1005.020 bios. After play'n around with my x800pro vivo-> modded for a couple of hours i couldnt bench at 201x11 with my locks enabled on the 1005.021 bios. Dont know why dont know how but i finially flashed back to the 1005.020 bios and im chugging along fine now.Quote:

Not only am I running a lower FSB but I have no mods and I'm running air. His rig is modded I believe, but I know for a fact both his CPU and GPU are on water. What's your point? That a watercooled S939 FX-53 can beat an aircooled 3700+? Now there's a revelation!:lol:Quote:

Want to guess what I could do on water?
If only I had a X800XT. This is on a stock Mach2 I think I'd be benching over 3ghz if the modded Mach2 was working. 9800xt clocked at 465/385
I'm Far Cry stable for hrs at 243x12=2920.
Why dont you tell us what you clocks were on the card and I've seen FX-53-939 do 2.7 on air. Whats the clocks on a stock XT 520/600. His oc is pretty mild. We all know who's being silly around here.
My goals are much more modest than those of OPP, Jason and a number of other folks here. I'm running a water set-up and probably will stay with water. And my board is NOT modded. I had to do a lot of tweaking and experimenting before I got to where I'm at now. I think this is a decent board. The only thing I wish for is more VDimm because the 3700EB is capable of higher speeds. Just for the record, these are my current settings:
LDT: 600MHz
Memclock ratio: 2:1 DDR400
Timings: 3-2-2-7-7-16
2T: disabled
AGP/PCI: 66.6/33.3
I did experiment with 75/37 for the AGP/PCI buses. Got some good 3D scores, but the system seemed a little squirrely.
Cowpuppy,
Impressive.
Here's an un-modded FX-51 940 with the same videocard you have on stock air at 2530MHz and only 230MHz FSB:

410MHz on the CPU and a Mach II should be good for more than 379 points, shouldn't it? So much for latency! Hmmmmm.
pkrew,
Somewhat less impressive.:D
sierra_bound,
I have no doubt that you had to do a lot of tweaking. I on the other hand did not. My score was run with stock cats, sliders to the default center and no OS or BIOS tweaks except straight overclocking.
Congrats! You've done good to score that high on a S939 system.
Have any of you guys tried that NEW A8V BETA BIOS??? What? 1006.004??????????
C
You should. Your BIOS is to blame for those funky timings. Who knows what else it was doing. You should try a BIOS other than the one you ran today for sure. Did you run .21 or .20 today?Quote:

charlie, my understanding is that 1006.004 does not have the lock option. :( But xgman has a modded 1006 from Bigtoe. Haven't heard him yet.
Stock clocks for an XT are 519.5/560.Quote:

His CPU MHz are higher, his FSB is much higher and his card clocks (especially his memory) are higher than what I can run on air. If his memory isn't watercooled I'd guess he had major arties as well.
Give it up dude.
Don't try the 1006. it dosn't have locks. I had to flash backwords last night.
Ya these timmings sux I'd say I'm loosing about 800pts, My BH-5 just won't run, they need 3.55v. That DFI Lan Party is what we need. A board that we can give some voltage to our hardware.
Raising my 3.3 line gave me some more stability I'm at 3.6 now, but I still can't run over 2.75v to my mem or windows freezes
Cowpuppy, your 3400+ hits almost 27k in 2k1 with a few hundred MHz less than the FX-53. Why did you only get in the high 25's with the S939 FX-53?
Right now 1005.021.... but I'm too tired to f with it....Quote:
