Probably yes, but do you want to listen to 4 of this 70mm fans screaming at full speed?
BTW get yourself 50 or 60mm fan for cooling chipset.

One thing to remember on the coolers is the distance between the CPUs. I went with standing coolers.
These are mine:
http://www.coolermaster.com/product.php?product_id=2535
TX3 work also
@retro77: do I see it correctly? You running your system with only 2 sticks memory per cpu (except cpu1)??? Mine do not boot with anything other than 0 or 4. Can you check your BIOS revision???
Never mind: I'm blind.
what? almost any fan used will be too loud unless throttled down.
yes those heatsinks should work fine if your have the brackets for 939, and 80mm super low speed fan works fine for chipset
but they dont fit all pretty flowing in the same direction like that :D
looks like cpu 0 is 4 sticks cpu 1 is 2 sticks
yes i have brackets for sockets 940....
the hyper tx2 are £30 in the uk which is too much im trying to keep costs down
WATERCOOL IT!! :D
That's what I did anyway...
They're the Broadcom chips for SATA, nfi if they get hot though :P
can anyone who bought this board from the UK tell me how long customs had the package and if you had to pay any import tax etc?
mine is sat a customs atm :(
EDIT: the parcel has cleared customs this morning :D
Bummer.........
just got a letter from parcel force with import vat at £13 and clearance fee of £8
the board was only £35!! :(
i finally got all the parts to set this up....
the psu ive got is a dual rail and i dont know what rail is what..
anyway i rigged it up to see if it you post and its fried one of the 4p to 8pin EPS adapters :(
this is the PSU ive got...
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/750w-...et-fan-atx-v22
got a single rail PSU...
she boots... installed Ubuntu 10.10
i have 4 x 8354's running
the only problem im having is, i have 4 x 1gb of 667 ram in cpu0 and cpu1 slots
if i add any into cpu2 0r 3 slots it wont boot...
IIRC you gotta fill all of _0, then _1, then _2, then _3
maybe a partially dud board?
all of _0 and _1 are full.....
it wont boot with any in _2 or _3 :(
will i gain any advantage if i swap the ram around and spread the 8 sticks and put 2 in each rather than fill _0 and _1?
also while folding its only using a total of around 3.3gb of ram so any more isnt worth it?
but i thought folding used lots for ram?
Make sure the OS is seeing all the installed RAM. If there's some kind of hardware or configuration problem it might not be recognizing some even though it's installed.
its showing 8gb in the OS so its ok?
i cant get into the bios.... can anyone upload a newer bios?
i will swap ram around....
the seller i bought the ram off has sent me some mixed ram so that maybe it
Is your CPU's mark as "OS8354WAL4BGH"? If so, you have B3 rev and you can't get in to BIOS 1.0.0 or lower. Can you take picture of your memory?
yes i did read a previous post regarding the bios issue with the b3 stepping...
ive been swapping the ram about and it will only boot with a matching 4 sticks per cpu... ATM i only have 2 x4 matching sticks of ram
even tho there 2 different makes of ram they still work fine with 4 matching for each cpu
so ive sent the seller a question asking why he has sent me mixed ram? ie. not 4 lots of 4 matching
also is it worth the extra ram when the system is only using 3.3gb out of 8gb?
Yes, with only 2 CPU's with memory you'll lose around ~20k PPD, and you'll be on edge with -bigbeta bonus point deadline. For F@H you need max out memory bandwidth.
yes your right...
my estimated PPD is around 55000ppd on wu 6903
4 8354 should get around 80000ppd so a 20k ppd loss looks correct!! :(
and the WU is due to finish only 12 hours before the deadline
im currently sourcing more ram on ebay
Did you test CPU's? You can just move good memory to CPU 2 & 3 and check if board will post.
Sent you PM.
ive not moved the good ram to the other ram slots yet...
will it still post even tho there will be no ram in cpu0 slots?
Yes, it will work. That is how I get in BIOS with B3's (remove memory from Socket 0 and exchange B3 to my crippled B2).
To be able to get in to BIOS (1.0.0), I have to replace my 8350HE (B3) in socket 0 with 8354 (B2 - I have one with damaged memory controller, can't handle any memory).
So your CPU's are OK.
ahh i get you now....
anyone willing to up there bios?
I need a CPU to do it :/
when ya looking at getting a cpu bud?
there relatively inexpensive now :D
When I finish my ITX build... so maybe mid August
ok cools
I'll be keeping my eye out on eBay for a single 83** to test the board, may pull trigger on that one this week depending on finances
sweet.....
also AXm77 you have a PM
just a pic of my setup :D
aftermarket NB cooler that was on my gigabyte MB and some spare SB coolers on the other chips
Attachment 128189
i need to get a better cooler on CPU 2 as its to small and run quite abit hotter than the others
CPU2? The one with dual fans? :D
Yep :D
i could have said CPU 3 i suppose
I don't recall which CPU socket is which. Just was guessing by the stacked cooling on the one :D
:rotf:
I've been discussing with some mates about what this board was for/who it was made for
-Made for google? Some say made for HP.. but HP have their own boards!
-No onboard VGA but some have a modified BIOS flash (the obey man).. why?
-Does the board boot headless?
-The nVidia 3050 chip supports 12 SATA 2, so why does the board have the Marvell chips for SATA?
-The board covers the big 3 in servers - Cores, Memory and Storage... Why all three in one chassis? WTF were they used for?
-Why is it so damn fussy about graphics cards?
-Why is there only one seller on eBay with a chassis for this board? Who made the chassis, and is it custom for him? http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-AMD-Opte...t_11094wt_1110
-Where the hell did he get so many arimas from to warrant a custom chassis if the above is true? He also has a LOT of GooMM RAM for the systems he's selling (Google Memory modules) He has 335 boards at current count on eBay, as well as 197 of the low end prebuilt systems with chassis, and 196 of the higher end systems.
-Why is the ACPI implementation so horrid Windows refuses to install?
-What are the extra 4 pins for on the power inputs?
-What would it take to get the Shanghai cpus to work? AGESA update? Fix the damned ACPI?
I have more q's than answers! Even with the manual I'm building -_-
How about HP was delivering systems for Google and Arima was maker of this board. No VGA on-board is biggest mystery. With BIOS 1.0.0 it will not boot without VGA card.
Marvell controllers (I didn’t check ones on board) can support port multiplier. Problem with VGA, no Windows etc. is BIOS implementation (Google do not need Windows support or all different VGA support).
My theory about chassis and green boards is: maybe HP was setting them for someone else??
4-pin extra is probably SMB bus or something like that. If you check this link: http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-10209580-92.html you can see on first picture board is powered with 2 EPS connectors and extra mystery connector (next to PCI slot). I got my hands on dual Opteron board (socket 940), I believe it was made for Google too (same generation as Intel board in article)
Attachment 128324
Attachment 128325
Attachment 128326
That connector is actually very common on server boards. I think it is for PSU monitoring by the system, so it can read redundant PSU setups and set alarms when one fails, that kind of thing.
That is a SMBus connector, I'm meaning the extra 4 on the 18pin, the one next to the 16 pin!
Ah yes, that google server.. I have one of those boards sitting downstairs. Never worked for me, but does that mean i have two ex-google server boards 0.0
I think they moved SMBus to that 18-pin connector. Which one you have? Intel or AMD?
Intel dual Xeon. made by Gigabyte iirc
guys im having a memory issue atm :(
been running 8gb just got another 4gb its hynix, HYMP5512P72BP4-Y5 AB-A 1gb
the board will boot but it comes up with gnu grub which ive never seen before
give me the option to boot to ubuntu or run memtest
if i select ubuntu it just reboots and goes to the grub again
choosing memtest its runs for several seconds maybe then reboots...
but i noticed as it was running memtest the the ram speed is 533mhz and the timings are 4-4-4-18 i think
where as the ram ive got is 667mhz and 5-5-5-15...
could it be this hynix ram cant run at this speed/timing but the other 8gb can?
i cant get in the bios to change it
and why wouldn't the bios automatically change it?
if i take the battery out to clear it will that work?
thanks
Try to boot with Hynix only and run memtest. Probably that memory is bad.
Opterons can handle different speed memory modules (but you have to have same speed modules per CPU).
Before I was running 667MHz on three CPU's and 400MHz on last one :)
i tried with just the Hynix it would bearly boot....
no its not the ram that the different speed the board has the speed at 533 and 4-4-4-18
ALL the ram is 667 5-5-5-15
but i cant get into the bios to change it?
So Hynix is screw up. Default BIOS setup for memory speed is auto, remove battery and wait couple minutes, if your memory is OK, it will run @ 667 without any changes to that (auto).
well the working memory is running at 533 with timings 4-4-4-18
should be 677 5-5-5-15 so its a bios issue
i left the battery out for half hour..... no change
Put the Hynix in CPU_0's slots, maybe it being the 'primary' ram may force the other ram to run at the slower timings?
I only see something like this on my system once: when I have damaged B2 installed in socket0 and B3's in rest. No matter what I set in BIOS (auto or 667), my memory was running @ 533.
ive already put the hynix in cpu_0 slots... it doesnt boot properly
all the cpu's were new
Then the Hynix RAM is either bad or incorrect for this board. Sounds like you did the selective interchange.
Rule #1 of owning an Arima: Never, I mean, never, shut it down
Rule #2 of owning an Arima: If there is ever a time to shut down the Arima, refer to Rule #1
I couldn't remember what the login ID was to get in. Phew, out of a whim I tried a funky one...my screen name on here...huh....I don't remember setting it to that, but it makes sense in hindsight
im thinking of getting a B1/B2 cpu so i can get into the bios?
an update on this hynix ram....
i took a closer look at it earlier and ive found that 2-3 of the smaller resistors are missing/broken off of 1 or more of the sticks... thats why it wont work properly!! :(
ive had nothing but trouble with all the ram ive had off ebay...
but now ive just bought tested and working ram on this board off AXm77 :)
Rebooting is fine. But man with the shutting down, I always have issues getting it running again. It never fires right up. Sometimes it takes a couple flips of the PSU in order to get it to come up.
Hopefully this new RAM will work. Can you RMA the Hynix stuff? I've seen that brand around work and its ok, just super cheap and not very high performance. Our cheapo at works tries to buy that crap and I refuse to use it. I want a name I know, Kingston, G.Skill
mine shuts down and boots up fine :D
RMA?
anyone still folding on these?
ive picked up P8101 WU's and the rig cant finish it in time for the bonus my ppd is 7700 :(
I think everyone who used them were on WCG with them. I wondered how well they would do on F@H -bigadv but never tried.
I've got one running full bore brunching on WCG.
http://boincstats.com/en/stats/15/host/detail/2007063
Sorry, but 8101's are no go for Arima. Install client v.7 and run -smp only.
Extra 10% bonus on a4-core units
Mine boots and shuts down just fine. It's also looking for a new home. It also accepts decent video cards.
yes ive seen about the A4 core bonus etc....
just moved my gaming rig to it and there ppd is up 3-4k including the bonus :)
im going to run the V7 in smp when its finished the bigbeta wu.
what ppd for you getting with A4 WU's?
I've been gifted a set of 8347HE's, should be here by end of next week. Assuming no issues with my RAM/board, I should have the 1.06 BIOS image up next weekend.
hello ther,
i would like to ask if anyone has ever used successfully a 800mhz mem modules even in 667mhz mode.
thank you.
When I get my opterons, I will test my GPUs in it to check compatibility. May as well add to the list in the manual! I have GTX285, HD4550, HD5670, GT210, 6600GT to test :)
Hello community.
Fact.Bios 1.0.6 is compatible with both Green and Blue pcb arima 4ways yet it does not allow win 7 to be loaded.ACPI complains about incompatibilities .
Bios 1.0.6 is the latest known bios for our motherboard,if you have any newer, please contribute. The instanbul and shangai opterons may work with a updated AGESA code.
i provide you links for both 1.0.6 and 1.0.4.
thank you .

You beat me to it! Ah well :P
I'm going to have a nosy at the BIOS code and try some AGESA injections. ACPI I can't do however, so I may get in contact with the Coreboot folks and see what we can do there for a fresh start BIOS.
Appears BIOS is neither Award or Phoenix.. hmmm this could be interesting.
Bios file reports as AMI, but the AMI file editor does not recognize it. GAH!
bad news guys....
my mobo has died....
so i have forsale
4 x 8354 B3
1 x 8354 B2 (used to get into bios)
16 x 1gb ddr2 667 pc 5300 fully working
ASUS EAX550GE/TD/256M pci-e gpu
Pulled the Agesa code out via notepad, I THINK, with a compatible editor, I may be able to inject newer AGESA code. 1.04 and 1.06 have AGESA V3.1.6.0, TYAN lists V3.3.0.0 as the earliest that supports Shanghais. Now to find an editor..

Continuing the digging, the Bios still reports as AMI, but will only open (somewhat) in an Insyde bios editor. I can't inject AGESA code without a fully working and compatible editor so I've hit a dead end for now.
When I get my CPUs I will pull my BIOS image and try work with that :)

I could be interested in the RAM, and your BIOS chip. What would you charge for this incl postage to New Zealand?
When my processors arrive I will start working on a coreboot BIOS package for the board
-Full ACPI
-Shanghai support
-Open source :P
you have PM confusis :)
Nice work confusis!
Right. CPUs arrived.
It boots with 1 CPU, goes into BIOS (big AMI logo on boot, no Obey), and loads linux fine. (lubuntu)
BUT
It refuses to post with any more than 1 cpu! CPUs are known to be all in perfect order, BIOS recognised 2GB when it posts with 1 CPU, so all RAM is being read. May have to memtest the sucker.
8347HE B3 opterons

ergggggggggggggggggggggggggg
All pins are fine in the sockets. I shouldn't need full banks of RAM per CPU should I?
No, you only want to fill CPU 0 memory bank first. I had 4x2GB in the CPU 0 memory bank, none in any of the others.
Interesting that your BIOS is a little different (no Obey dude).
I know it POSTs extremely slowly, not sure if only 1 CPU goes faster or not.
1 CPU boots to BIOS within 20seconds
Yeah I've tried booting with 4 DIMMs in CPU_0 with 1,2,4 cpus, only works on 1 cpu.
Will do a Memtest, and if that passes I'll leave 2 cpus in it and leave it to boot. I left it for 2 mins earlier on 2 cpus and nothing, may have to leave it a bit longer
Mine took a while - longer than 20 seconds - but never 2 minutes
Hmm. I disabled 'quiet boot' and Mr Obey showed up.
Having issues getting memtest to boot - something about keyboard jammed, then it refuses to mount. time to keep diggin'
fuuuuuuuuuu
CPU_1 socket appears to be dead.
I have the board booting with CPU_0, CPU_2 and CPU_3 populated, but as soon as i install a cpu in CPU_1 it fails to boot.
Fixed :D 16 cores! w00t.
On a negative note I will need to add the nVidia GT210 to the doesn't work list for GPUs, but at least I can add the HD4550 to the working list.
There was somehow some thermal paste on 4 pins in CPU_0's socket which must've blocked the HT links to CPU_1's socket.
Bios rev is 1.06, obey man and all. AGESA code is V3.1.6, as per the other 1.06 bios posted recently. BIOS setup is a lot more featured than I expected, I'm digging through it today :D
Not yet :P
Lots of hacking to do, mostly involving trying to get a compatible reader to pull the code apart so I can update the AGESA.. easier said than done by a long shot :(
on a positive note:
